DIY wedding table decoration, instructions

A wedding is the most important day in the life of two people in love. But besides the feeling of mutual love at the holiday, a huge place is given to other feelings: hospitality, beauty, which largely relate to the organization of the celebration. Since guests and heroes of the occasion are in the process of feasting almost all the time, great attention should be paid to the design of the wedding table - decoration, serving, seating of guests.

Decorating a wedding table is a very important task, because everything on it must be perfect!

In order for every little detail concerning the wedding table to be in harmony with the decor of the hall and the general atmosphere of the celebration, you need to decide on the style in advance. Next you need to follow the plan.

  1. Preparation of consumables. The color and quality of textiles should be combined with the furnishings - curtains, walls, furniture.
  2. Selection of tablecloths. In official etiquette rules, it is customary for the tablecloth to be a light shade - beige, sand, pale blue. When choosing the color of the buffet wedding textiles, rely on the style of the event. Any pastel shades are best.
  3. Correctly placed accents, bright table decoration with various details. Accents can be: a flower arrangement, hand-made souvenirs made from natural materials, an ensemble of candles on original candlesticks. Today the following accent is in fashion - a couple of bottles of champagne with glasses that are decorated by hand. Often these bottles are kept in the house and opened in honor of the wedding anniversary.
  4. Accessories. This group includes napkins and cards indicating the place for guests. If we talk about the newlyweds’ table, then the most striking decoration on it is the festive glasses.

The choice of decorative elements depends on the overall style of the celebration

To ensure that guests forever remember what your wedding table decoration was like, you can prepare special surprises. For example, these could be bags of sweets and cookies, each of which has a paper tag attached to it with a name and a small pleasant wish.

Wedding table decoration: general rules of good manners

In order for the decoration of the wedding table to look harmonious against the background of the overall atmosphere, you need to consider the following points.

  1. The newlyweds' table should be located in the center of the hall so that all guests have visual contact with the newlyweds, and be the brightest and most lavishly decorated.
  2. Flower arrangements and other details of the festive table should not be too high.
  3. Dishes, decor, accessories should be of the same style, and not on one side of the table there are porcelain phases, and on the other - wicker baskets with flowers.

The decoration of the table of the bride and groom should take into account the preferences of the young

A separate place is occupied by the cake table. It needs to be decorated in the same style as other tables.

The birthday cake should be placed on a specially designated and equipped table

Buffet table skirts

One of the elements of decorating a banquet table is a buffet skirt - a piece of fabric attached to the tablecloth and covering the legs of the table, as well as the space between them.

For greater decorativeness, the buffet skirt is folded or gathered, complemented with swargs, draperies, bows, flowers, LED strips and other elements. They select it in accordance with the general color scheme of the interior - in the same or contrasting colors with the tablecloth, tablecloth, napkins.

The main purpose of using buffet skirts is:
  1. In creating a festive interior.
  2. The ability to beautifully combine several tables into one.
  3. Interior renovation. Decorating tables with buffet skirts is an inexpensive and effective way to update your interior design, allowing you to save on the purchase of new buffet tables.

The basics of a beautiful feast

First of all, when decorating a wedding table with your own hands, you should think not about fashion, not about what the guests will think, but about your personal wishes. For a successful, sincere design, it is worth considering these rules.

  • A sense of proportion - one should not allow an overabundance of decorations or an inharmonious combination of colors. In order for the table to look beautiful and stylish, it is enough to combine three colors (unless we are talking about a rainbow wedding or eclecticism).
  • Combining the incongruous – don’t be afraid to experiment.
  • Using the maximum number of textures and details from different materials. If your style allows, you can use dried wooden branches, satin and organza ribbons when decorating the wedding table. You can organize an unusual photo zone: for example, for a wedding in a retro style, a photo zone with vintage details (an aged mirror, vinyl records) is suitable; for other styles, you can choose a flower photo zone.

It is important not to copy the design from other people’s weddings, but to bring your own ideas and fantasies into it

And the last piece of advice is that you shouldn’t get hung up on the traditions and rules that were followed 40-50 years ago. In order for guests to forever remember the wedding celebration, you should rely only on your individual imagination.

To receive guests! We sew a tablecloth with our own hands

Do you like to receive guests? We simply love it! And that’s why we suggest you sew a tablecloth with your own hands before they arrive. Believe me, such a tablecloth will not only decorate your holiday, but will also become a source of pride for the hostess, because such a tablecloth cannot be bought in a store! Made from floral cotton tapestry, it is finished with a satin border and fine lace trim. Another special feature of this tablecloth is that it is double - placed on a thin olive-colored cotton lining.

DIY tablecloth - details

DIY tablecloth - master class

In order to correctly calculate the required length of fabric for a tablecloth, measure the length and width of your table and add 60 cm to the measured values. The estimated length of the tablecloth (DS) and the finished width of the tablecloth (SH) are calculated using the formula: DS = Table width + 60 cm, ШС = Table length + 60 cm. According to the standards, the tablecloth should go down from all edges of the table by 25-30 cm.

As a rule, tablecloths bought in stores have standard sizes and do not always fit our table, going down the edges too much or not enough. This is another reason to sew a tablecloth yourself!

Fabric for the tablecloth can be purchased at a curtain fabric store. The width of such fabrics is usually 2.8-3.0 m, which will allow you to sew a tablecloth even on a large table. Dimensions of the table presented in the master class: 0.9 m x 1.8 m.

For our tablecloth and 4 napkins we needed:

Main fabric: cotton tapestry with floral pattern - 1.5 m with a fabric width of 2.8 m.

Lining fabric: cotton poplin 2.4 m long and 150 cm wide.

Satin ribbon for finishing the edges of the tablecloth 6.5 cm wide, 8.5 m long, lace trim 2.5 cm wide and 8.5 m long, matching threads.

For finishing the edges of napkins (napkin size 0.3 x 0.3 m): satin ribbon 3 cm wide, 5 m long, lace trim 2.5 cm wide and 5 m long, matching threads.

Rice. 1. DIY tablecloth - necessary materials

Cut out the tablecloth from the main and lining fabrics according to your measurements, add 1 cm allowances on all sides. Place both pieces with right sides facing each other, match the edges and secure with tailor's pins.

Rice. 2. Treating the tablecloth with a lining. Cut out 2 rectangles for the tablecloth from the main and lining fabric according to your measurements.

Sew the parts from the main and lining fabrics along the contour, leaving a small area for turning.

Rice. 3. Sew the parts along the contour

Cut off the allowances at the corners, not reaching 2 mm from the stitching.

Rice. 4. Cut off allowances at corners

Iron the seams of the tablecloth from the right side, placing both allowances on the main fabric piece.

Rice. 5. Iron the seams

Sweep the tablecloth clean on all sides, turning the seam to the wrong side.

Rice. 6. Sweep clean on all sides

Fold and iron the seam allowances along the open area of the tablecloth. Then fold them together, matching the edges, baste and stitch close to the edge. Remove basting stitches. Iron the tablecloth along all edges again.

Rice. 7. Fold and baste the allowances along the open area

Before adding the satin ribbon, you need to secure the edges of the tablecloth. To do this, place wide basting stitches along the edges as shown in photo 8.

Rice. 8. Baste the edges of the tablecloth using wide stitches.

Decorating the edges of the tablecloth with satin ribbon

Satin ribbon and lace trim are used to decorate the tablecloth. First, you need to stitch the satin ribbon along the edges of the tablecloth, then the lace trim is sewn onto the ribbon (Fig. 9).

Rice. 9. Satin ribbon and lace trim

Start stitching the satin ribbon from one of the corners of the tablecloth. Place it exactly along the edges and stitch exactly to the edge.

Rice. 10. How to sew satin ribbon

To make it easier for you to guide the fabric under your foot when turning a corner, thread a double thread into the top of each corner. Pull the thread as you turn to help guide the fabric under the foot.

Rice. 11. When turning the corner, pull the thread

After the satin ribbon is stitched around the entire perimeter of the tablecloth, you need to decorate the corners. To do this, lay the tape at a 90° angle and cut off the excess tape at the corner, leaving allowances for hemming the edges.

Rice. 12. Cut off the corners of the satin ribbon

Tuck one seam allowance on top of the other, fold the top seam allowance under and baste or pin.

Rice. 13. Fold and pin allowances at corners

Make sure that when folding the ribbon you get a neat, even hem. Stitch the corner allowance exactly to the edge.

Rice. 14. Stitch the tape allowance to the corner

The open edge of the ribbon can be pinned to the tablecloth or basted; we will sew lace trim along this edge.

Rice. 15. Corners of the tablecloth

The lace trim should be stitched exactly in the center. To do this, place the trim on the open edge of the satin ribbon and stitch it in the center, while simultaneously stitching the inner edge of the satin ribbon.

How to cut and sew napkins

For the set you will need 6 table napkins. To sew them, use the same fabrics as for the tablecloth. Cut out napkins from the main and lining fabrics and sew them in the same way as the tablecloth. To decorate napkins, use a narrower satin ribbon 3 cm wide.

Grace and harmony in the little things or thematic decoration of the buffet table at a wedding

To ensure that the design of a stylish wedding table does not become an object of ridicule and discussion, you must adhere to the wedding style.

Newlyweds table in retro style

The table shows popular styles that are often used to organize wedding celebrations and corresponding ideas for decorating the wedding table (features of serving, current additions).

Style nameWhat you can't do without when decorating a tableDetails that are completely inappropriate
RusticField cornflowers, daisies, buttercups in ordinary jars, baskets, wooden boxes, the use of natural materials (logged wood, linen, cotton or burlap). Chairs can be replaced with wooden barrels, tables can be covered with chintz fabric with a floral pattern. The dishes should be simple, plain. Expensive sets, fabrics (silk, chintz), modern decor (for example, square plates).
ProvenceFurniture – made of natural wood, wicker, forged, perhaps slightly aged. Fabrics for decoration can only be natural - linen, chintz, cotton. You can also complement everything with lace napkins, ribbons, and textile flowers. Suitable flowers include sprigs of lavender and olive, and bunches of grapes. The dishes should be classic, white. As in the rustic style, there should not be anything ultra-modern.
Rainbow weddingMaximum of bright colors - multi-colored dishes, textiles, flowers. It doesn’t matter how the colors are combined with each other. No black, white, gray.
RetroAn abundance of soft flowing fabrics, a vintage color scheme (beige, sand yellow, gray and pink palettes) are key signs of retro style. To fully comply with the spirit of the era, you need to choose retro sets (for example, with a floral border). Rhinestones, bright colors, synthetic materials.
bohoEverything is natural - from furniture to napkins, maximum ethnic details, many bright and colorful details.Monotony, the presence of artificial materials in the decor, as well as unnatural (“acid”) shades.
Eco styleNatural materials, pastel shades in every detail, the simplest possible design that follows the lines of the environment.Use of plastic, artificial flowers and fabrics. Instead of satin ribbons, it is better to use jute and twine.

Tablecloth for a square table

To make a tablecloth for a square table, you will need: a notepad and pen, a measuring tape, decorative fabric, fabric scissors, an iron, an ironing board, a pencil or crayon, a sewing machine or a hand sewing needle.

How to measure a table

To make a tablecloth, you will need a piece of fabric that is wide enough to fit your table.

Before you go shopping for fabric, take a tape measure and measure the length and width of the table. Write down the information in a notepad.

Measurements should include tabletop length and width and fabric overhang. The optimal overhang size is 20-25 centimeters. If it is longer, the tablecloth will seem more elegant, but it will be inconvenient to use. Since the fabric may shrink after washing, it is better to add 20-25 cm to the length of the weight. You should also allocate 10 cm for the hem. For example, you have a table 75 cm long and 75 cm wide.

We calculate fabric consumption as follows:

  • fabric length 75 cm+(overhang length 20 +20)+(hem 10 cm)=125 cm
  • fabric width 75 cm + (overhang length 20 +20) + (hem 10 cm) = 125 cm.

Before you start cutting the fabric, you need to iron it properly. You can then draw lines using a pencil and ruler that correspond to your measurements and carefully cut the fabric.

Forming the edges of the tablecloth

Fold the edges of the fabric 1 cm and iron. The fabric should lie with the wrong side up. From the corner of the fabric, mark 8 cm in each direction. Draw a line and then bend the corner according to your line. Mark the fold with pins and stitch it.

Cut off the corner, leaving 5 centimeters from the seam. As a result, you should have a corner. To make it more even and neat, it needs to be ironed. The remaining corners of the tablecloth are processed in the same way.

The sides of the fabric should be folded, ironed and finished with a blind seam or machine sewn. The fabric should lie with the wrong side up.

Tablecloth decoration

After the main work is done, you can make the appearance of your tablecloth even more beautiful - sew lace, flounces to the edges or decorate with a variety of appliqués.

Table decoration with flowers

Today there is such an abundance of materials and techniques for creating artificial flowers that they are no worse than natural ones. Which option is better - live or paper (latex, fabric, foamiran) flowers - should be chosen only by newlyweds.

You can make spectacular decor with your own hands

Flowers can be either fresh or artificial

To prevent decorating the wedding table with flowers from looking tasteless, all flower arrangements must be created in the same style: each bouquet must include the same flowers and decor.

Beautiful disposable tableware for a wedding

Today, decorating an outdoor wedding buffet can be no worse, and sometimes much more spectacular and colorful, than indoors. And you don’t have to take mountains of glassware, sometimes very expensive ones, with you out of town. Serving with disposable tableware has a number of advantages that can delight you with its practicality and originality:

  • Glasses for a wedding picnic can be either plastic or paper. Moreover, this obligatory attribute of a celebration can set the color background for the entire table setting, as well as become a relevant colorful accent.
  • A high aesthetic level can be supported by cutlery in different colors, wicker baskets, as well as various accessories of high quality.

Glasses for a wedding picnic

  • Food-grade plastic and laminated cardboard are materials used in the manufacture of disposable tableware. They are made of environmentally friendly materials, easy to recycle, lightweight, and do not break.

Even if the wedding celebration takes place indoors, you still can’t do without champagne and light snacks during the bride price, a trip to the registry office, a walk after registration and a photo shoot against the backdrop of attractions.

And disposable paper cups for a wedding , as well as light plates, will serve you well until you get to the restaurant

Guests receive special attention

Nothing brightens up a celebration like smiling guests. All those invited to the wedding celebration will feel comfortable if the table decorations do not interfere with free movement, eating and drinking.

A guest card is a stylish accessory that helps set the mood for the holiday

Proper design of guest tables gives the celebration the status of a high-class event

Today it is fashionable to place a card with a name on each table, and the newlyweds make the seating plan for the guests. In order for everyone to be satisfied, three points need to be taken into account: the ability of guests to observe what is happening in the hall without obstacles, the presence of waiters and stylish aesthetic decor.

DIY tablecloths for tables of different shapes

Step-by-step instructions for making tablecloths for tables of different shapes: description with photos and videos

Even if the style of your interior does not include a fabric design for the dining table (for example, it is made of glass or rough “a la country” boards), there are times when such a covering is simply necessary. For example, a beautiful, elegant tablecloth, sewn by yourself, will decorate the table at which guests will sit during a festive celebration. And a simple chintz covering will come in handy if there is a small child at the table.

This home decoration piece not only protects the table top, it also becomes an important decorative detail. The principles for measuring cutting and sewing a tablecloth for a dining table or temporary table in the hall are the same. Rectangular or square coverings are very easy to sew, and even round varieties do not pose much of a problem.

This page presents master classes on making tablecloths for tables of various shapes.

How to make your own tulle skirt for the edge of the newlyweds’ table

Decorating the wedding table of the newlyweds requires more attention than other tables in the reception hall. It is best if the most voluminous flower arrangement is placed on the table, but the main thing is that its height should not be more than 15 cm. For decoration, it is best to use generously draped fabric. The ideal option is to create a tulle skirt along the edge of the newlyweds’ table.

The finish of several shades in harmony with each other looks great

An airy tulle skirt along the edge of a wedding table is an original decoration that you can make with your own hands without much effort. To do this, the whole tulle fabric needs to be cut into long strips 15-20 cm wide. The length of the strips is equal to the height of the table multiplied by “2”.

One way to secure strips of material

To create a tulle skirt for the newlyweds’ table, you need to take a wide braid or cord so that its length is 20-30 cm longer than the diameter of the wedding table, fold each piece of tulle in half and attach it to the base. In this case, you can use one tulle color or combine several shades, creating the effect of a smooth color transition.

Shapes, fabrics, color

You should choose a tablecloth, like other decorative elements of the wedding table, only after the general theme of the festive feast has been determined. Based on this, it will be possible to start choosing according to certain parameters: color, design, fabric structure, additional accessories, etc.

Form

The choice of design depends on several factors:

  • general style of the festive table;
  • the table for which it is selected - for individual bars, a common banquet or separate tables;
  • table shape – round, square, rectangular.

Taking these nuances into account, you should select sizes and shapes. Traditionally, its edges should go down at least 20–30 cm. A tablecloth that is too short will not look very good, much like small clothes on a person.

However, it is not at all necessary to adhere to classical standards.

There are a large number of alternative solutions, for example, runners.

These are long narrow tablecloth runners laid over the main element or directly on the table. The latter option looks especially advantageous on beautiful tables, stylized as antiques, with carved legs or made of expensive types of wood.

If the wedding banquet is held at one long common table, you can use several identical tablecloths laid along its entire length. When it becomes necessary to cover a long table with several tablecloths, they should be laid overlapping.

In this case, you should start from the side opposite to the entrance - this way the joints will be less noticeable.

Fabrics

The texture of the fabric also plays an important role.
Typically, linen, cotton or more expensive silk products are used for a formal feast. Synthetics are also suitable as a budget option. Fortunately, today there is a wide selection of synthetic fabrics - both in color and texture.

To add more sophistication to the table setting, light translucent tulle, organza or even thick corduroy are often used.

Tablecloths with monogram

Products with various embroidered patterns and monograms will add special chic to the feast. Most often these are monograms with the initials or names of the newlyweds. Of course, ordering a complete set with original monograms for all tables from a sewing studio is not a cheap pleasure. It is quite possible to get by with options with monograms only for tables-bars, a welcome area and a table for gifts.

Additional details: naperons, fourchette skirts, muleton

When decorating a table, do not neglect additional accessories: often it is these minor details that set the tone for the entire table setting. Such additions may include:

  • Naperon - additional tablecloths laid on top of the main ones. They also allow you to hide the joints of tables and are usually made of the same or similar fabric as the main tablecloth;
  • buffet skirts are decorative pleats that flow down from the table. Used to drape the flowing edges of main tablecloths. They are usually made from synthetic fabrics;
  • tablecloth (muleton) - a backing laid under a tablecloth. It is usually made from a two-layer material of the same name: one side is made of fleecy synthetics, and the other is made of artificial fabric resembling synthetics. Allows tablecloths to remain firmly on the table surface without sliding down;
  • under-plate napkins. They are placed on top of the main tablecloth; plates with hot dishes are usually placed on them.

Traditionally, a wedding tablecloth is painted in light colors - white, cream, light beige. Shades are selected depending on the overall color scheme of the holiday decoration.
At the same time, the soft contrast of the main background with additional accessories looks good when the napkins or napkins have a lighter or darker tone.

Decoration with fabrics and candles. DIY crafts

When decorating a wedding table, it’s simply stupid not to use fabrics: curtains, tablecloths, chair covers and napkins make the atmosphere cozy and homely warm. The fabric is selected according to the style: linen and cotton are characteristic of rustic, eco-style, and satin and silk are characteristic of Japanese style, and sometimes modern.

Beautiful, efficient folds require heavy fabrics

Fabric can be used to decorate both the wedding table itself and the background, as well as chairs and other pieces of furniture.

Nowadays it is very fashionable to use hand-made details as wedding decor, and this can be done by both newlyweds and professional craftsmen. The abundance of modern materials allows you to create almost any little thing, with the exception of dishes (don’t despair - they can be decorated).

  2. Glasses.
  3. Accessories – candlesticks, napkins.

It doesn’t matter that the napkins will quickly lose their original appearance. The main thing is that they will help create a favorable feeling of beauty along with the rest of the wedding table setting.

Buffet table skirts, fold options photo

Of course, folds, gathers and puffs are the main decoration of a buffet skirt. When creating folds on a buffet skirt, they are laid either in one direction or in two, as if meeting each other.

  • One-sided folds, called “accordion”, can be located along the entire length or in groups. They should have the same depth and width, and be at the same distance from each other. When calculating the material, it should be taken into account that, in order to obtain deep, beautiful folds, the depth of a one-sided fold should be twice as large as its finished width. If there is not much fabric, folds can be made into shallow folds - “pleated”. Place one-sided folds along the front side of the fabric and secure at the top with a stitch (if the preparation of the buffet skirt is made in advance) or with pins (if the skirt is made immediately on the table, without preliminary preparation).
  • Double-sided folds can be bow pleats (“Box 2”) or counter pleats (“Box 3”). They are made according to the same principle - the folds are laid towards each other. If the folds of folds facing each other are located on the front side, such folds are called counter folds, if they are located on the wrong side of the skirt, such folds are called bow folds. Just like one-sided ones, this type of folds can be located in groups or along the entire perimeter of the skirt; their depth is equal to twice the finished width.

  • A more complex technique for decorating a buffet skirt is puffs. They are done by hand, often preparing the buffet skirt in advance. The most popular types of puffs are diamonds, braids, waffles, zigzag and others. An example of making puffs on a buffet skirt is shown in the video below.

Use of fruits, vegetables, caramel and chocolate

Sweets are an excellent table decoration at a wedding, because they predict happiness in family life for the newly-made husband and wife.

Beautiful serving dishes, paper figurines and fruit vases are used to decorate the sweet table.

It is not necessary to put sweets on the tables towards the end of the celebration; it is best for fruit, caramel and chocolate to be served along with snacks.

If time permits, fruits can be used to create real masterpieces

Even a chic assortment of delicacies will not look attractive without exquisite decoration using decorative dishes

The ideal serving option is on a multi-level stand. Also, as an option, you can use separate tables for sweets, but do not forget - they also need to be decorated.

Drapery for a wedding table, general rules for making a buffet skirt

The buffet skirt is made from solid fabrics of satin, satin, organza or other fabric.

Pleating is a classic design option for a furry skirt. To decorate a standard table designed for 4 people, you will need about 8 m of fabric, for a table for 8 people - about 11 m of fabric.

Since the standard width of the fabric is most often 1.5 m, and the height of the table is 75-80 cm, the selected piece of fabric must be cut in half lengthwise, and then stitch the short sections together, resulting in a solid, very long fabric.

The resulting seam is the middle of the buffet skirt and serves as a guide when placing the finished product around the perimeter of the table. To prevent the sections of the panel from fraying during the use of the skirt, it is recommended to decorate them - overlaying, sewing with a zigzag, tucking or finishing with a roller or trim.

The next stage is laying folds or gathers - their width can be arbitrary. The folds are laid to the left or right, secured with pins, which must be placed perpendicular to the top cut, 1.5 cm away from it. To secure the folds, they are sewn on a machine with a double stitch, running along the top edge. The indent width is optional. If you fasten the folds close to the top edge, you will get a neat skirt with gently flowing folds, the upper part of which can be left open or additionally decorated with a naperon, lambrequin, drapery, ribbon, or flowers.

In addition, you can decorate the upper edge of such a buffet skirt with a belt, sewing it on top and thereby solving the issue of additional decoration at the junction of the buffet skirt and tablecloth. If you secure the folds at a distance of 5-7 cm from the top edge, an additional ruffle will be formed, which can be beautifully played out.

If instead of pleats on the buffet skirt, gathers are made, then to create them you can use curtain tape, simply stitching it along the long edge of the fabric and pulling it with laces to the desired length, straightening it, evenly distributing the gathers.

Sewing a tablecloth for an oval table

To sew a tablecloth for an oval table, follow the instructions for a tablecloth for a rectangular table, but make some adjustments during assembly—after sewing but before folding:

Place the cloth on the table top. Align the center of the tablecloth with the center of the table and place the fabric so that the seams run parallel to the length of the table and are equidistant from the edges. To prevent the tablecloth from slipping, weigh it down with books. Then use chalk to draw a faint line to outline the edges of the table.
  • Remove the tablecloth. Working on a large flat surface, measure and mark from the edge a distance equal to the desired drop length plus 2.5 cm. Cut the fabric along this line.

Table Decorating Tips

Use the following tips to decorate your table:

  1. A stylish floor-length tablecloth can transform a budget table.
  2. You can breathe new life into less-than-ideal furniture if you cover the table with a specially made tablecloth.
  3. To quickly change up your decor for the season, simply re-arrange the tablecloth.
  4. An overskirt can make a table the focal point of a room.
  5. Choose practical, easy-care fabrics that wash quickly and require little or no ironing.
  6. When choosing a finish, make sure it also washes well and doesn't fade.
  7. The simplest of all is the tablecloth, made from cotton covered with plastic. It does not require stitching and can be wiped clean after eating.

These photos show examples of decorating tables with hand-sewn tablecloths:

How to sew a tablecloth for a round table

For a DIY tablecloth for a round table, add the tablecloth's drop (sag) amount, plus the table top's diameter, plus the drop amount, plus a 2.5 cm hem allowance.

After stitching, but before making the hem, fold the fabric in half, then into quarters, matching the seams and edges; pin the layers together.
  • Pin a flexible measuring tape (meter) to the center point and, using the tape as a guide (like a compass), mark the radius (i.e. half the width of the cut) with chalk or a special marker.
  • Cut along the marked line, then unfold the tablecloth. Fold and, if desired, sew on decorative trim.
  • On a round or oval tablecloth, if the fabric is too heavy for a narrow hem or serger, use a 12mm hem.

Sew over the raw edge using an overlocker or machine. Fold it 12 mm down and press it. Sew to the edge (along the top).

    Ruffles

If you use a wide ribbon to decorate with ruffles, this will make your work much easier (you won’t have to process the edges). And if you decide to cut out ruffles from fabric, there are two options to make them neat. You can fold both sides twice along the length and make two seams.

Or measure double width, fold the strip in half with the wrong side up, machine stitch along one side along the length, and then turn the ruffle out. Not enough length? Connect several strips to the size you need. After this, sew stitches along one side by hand or select a seam with wide stitches on the machine.

When everything is ready, pull the thread so that the fabric is folded and the length is reduced to the desired length. Place the ruffles where they should be, secure them with pins, and then machine stitch them.

Enjoy your work and enjoy quality results. Let the festive tablecloth cover your table as often as possible.

    Master Class

You can make a buffet skirt with your own hands. To do this you will need the following tools and materials:

    • fabric suitable in texture and color;
    • tailor's scissors;
    • piece of chalk;
    • ruler or measuring tape;
    • threads with a needle;
    • sewing machine;
    • Velcro tape.

Measurements. First of all, we take measurements from the table - measure its height from the lid to the floor. The edge of the future skirt should not reach the floor a few centimeters - thus eliminating the possibility that one of the guests will accidentally step on it. To determine the required length of the skirt, measure the perimeter of the table.

If you need to make a skirt for a long common table, it is more practical to make it from several separate parts rather than from one long piece of fabric. This will make it more convenient to “put it on” and take it off, as well as wash it after the feast.

Folds. The main decoration of a buffet skirt is its folds - they contain all its decorative “zest”. They can be either unilateral or bilateral. One-sided folds are made as follows:

    1. Lay the fabric out on a flat surface.
    2. Fold it in half widthwise, inside out.
    3. We retreat 4–5 cm from the fold and mark a line with chalk.
    4. We sweep away the folds along the line.
    5. Unfold the fabric and place the folds in one direction.
    6. Using an iron, we smooth out the resulting folds to make them look better.
    7. Using a sewing machine, we sew the folds along the top edge with two stitches.

Fastening the skirt to the tablecloth. You can attach the resulting skirt to the tablecloth using threads with light stitches. But Velcro tape is much more convenient to use. We sew one half of it at the required height to the hanging edges of the tablecloth, and the other - directly to the skirt.

In this way you can get a set of tablecloths with a quick-detachable skirt, which is very convenient if you plan to use them in the future for other celebrations.

In this video they will tell you how you can decorate your wedding table with a skirt:

In order to more organically fit the tablecloth into the surrounding environment of the wedding celebration, you should adhere to the general style. So, for a country (rustic) style wedding, simple shapes and a deliberately rough texture are suitable. Checkered jute or muslin would be quite appropriate here. For the shabby chic style, more refined and sophisticated textures are suitable, creating the effect of the “good old Victorian era”. For a celebration in a modern, dynamic style a la disco or when decorating a hall in the Art Nouveau style, you can use more daring solutions, including gold or silver metallic fabrics.
