Biography of actor, director and musician Igor Mirkurbanov: photos, children, personal life

It is difficult to define in one word who Igor Vitalievich Mirkurbanov is. This is a very multifaceted person, who is called a theater and film actor, singer, director and TV presenter. The artist was moving to Israel, as Igor thought, forever. He returned to Russia, where in 2021 he received the title of Honored Artist of the Russian Federation.

It’s interesting that the artist’s acting career was a thorny path. In her youth, the future celebrity did not think about theater stages and film sets, but studied at technical universities. How did this man, having started his artistic career so late, achieve brilliant results? Read the biography of Igor Mirkurbanov and find out.

Family and childhood

The surname Mirkurbanov gives rise to insinuations about the actor’s nationality. The man was born in Kazakhstan, but is not a member of the indigenous nation. The fact is that political dissidents were exiled to these parts of the republic under the tsarist regime and during the Stalinist repressions.

The latter included Mikhail Mirkurbanov, our hero’s paternal grandfather. The native Muscovite was arrested in the late 1930s. He fought throughout World War II in a penal company. He returned from the front with the rank of captain. He married and settled on Sretenka, but together with his wife Galina Trofimovna Pryadilnikova he was exiled to Kazakhstan.

Igor's maternal grandfather, Ivan Lenichev, was shot during Stalin's reign as a class alien - the director of a brick factory. The parents of the future actor were born in Shymkent.

Father Vitaly Mikhailovich worked as a civil engineer, and mother Galina Ivanovna worked as a librarian. The son, who was born on October 2, 1964, was not the only child. Igor has a sister, one year older than him.

Note: The future actor went to high school not at the age of 7, like all children, but at less than 6. The parents decided: let the baby study with his sister, they will sit at the same desk, the older one will help the younger one with his homework. It turned out that there was no need to help: the talented child studied only with fours and fives.

During the Khrushchev “thaw,” the family moved to Kemerovo, where Igor received his matriculation certificate. The father of the future artist sang excellently and played the accordion. The 4-year-old boy had his own harmonica. And then the parents, noticing musical talent in their son, bought the boy a piano. For a long time, Igor regarded music exclusively as a “leisure hobby.”

Igor Mirkurbanov in his youth

Childhood

Igor was born in the Kazakh city of Shymkent (Chimkent).
His paternal grandfather, Mikhail Mirkurbanov, a Muscovite, a hero of World War II, was a victim of Stalin’s repressions and fought in a penal battalion, but returned to Moscow with the rank of captain and settled in an apartment on Sretenka with his wife Galina. He was arrested again and, together with his wife, deported to Kazakhstan. My maternal grandfather, the head of a brick factory, was shot. The Mirkurbanovs' neighbors in the yard were also mostly relatives of the repressed - Russians, Jews, Koreans, Germans. Father, Vitaly Mikhailovich Mirkurbanov, received three technical educations and worked as a civil engineer, in his free time from his main job he made custom drawings. Mom, Galina Ivanovna Lenicheva, worked in the library.

Young Igor Mirkurbanov

The parents were creative, intelligent people and tried to instill in Igor and his older sister a love of science and art. Igor learned to read early and loved spending time in his mother’s library. My father sang well and played the accordion, so the family often had real musical evenings.

Igor also inherited musical abilities - he quickly mastered playing the piano, which was very useful in his future profession. Igor grew up as a smart and inquisitive boy, keenly interested in what was happening around him. Igor was sent to school in 1970 along with his sister, who was a year older. Although the boy was not yet six years old, he very soon became one of the best students in the class and all subsequent years he studied with A's and B's.

Education

Since childhood, Igor has been an adventurous, risky guy. Having received a matriculation certificate at the age of 15, the teenager went with a classmate (who was 17) to Moscow to enter the capital’s university. Without relatives and friends, without big money, the teenagers found themselves in the metropolis. Luck smiled on Igor, and he entered the Gas and Oil Institute. True, things didn’t work out with his studies: the young man was expelled for “farting.”

Note: Our hero explains: “In those times of total shortage, everyone traded what they could - from toothpaste to clothes.”

The guy worked at the factory for two months, making parts for 0.2 kopecks apiece. The experience gave the young man an insight into the life of the proletariat. The next year, Igor entered Tomsk Polytechnic. However, a most unpleasant story happened: Igor brought marijuana from his small homeland “to try,” although he did not use drugs.

One of the students reported and the guy was arrested. The young man spent 15 days in a cell, but got off with a light sentence - 2 years probation. The university decided to “clear the ranks” of problem students; the student failed the exam. When the guy tried to prove the teachers’ bias, the dean’s office coldly said: “You won’t study with us.”

In Kemerovo, Igor was ashamed to return to his parents and got a job as a gravedigger in a cemetery. It was a difficult period of life when the guy lost faith in himself. One day, the young man got so drunk that he fell into a hole he dug with his own hands and almost froze to death at -40 C.

Igor's sister settled in Novosibirsk. The young man went to see a relative. This time the young man chose not a technical, but a creative profession. Having a musical education, the guy entered the conservatory to study as a conductor. An unpleasant story happened again.

University students organized wall-to-wall fights, and one of the massacres took on a bloody scale. Many participants faced prison. Mirkurbanov foolishly decided to “play like a fool.” The young man had no idea that Soviet mental hospitals were worse than any prison. The young man spent 2 months in the institution, once he tried to escape.

Mirkurbanov is compared in appearance to Sergei Chelobanov

Note: “In a psychiatric hospital it is difficult not to become mentally damaged. Even now, decades later, remembering this period, my heart begins to beat in a special way,” says Mirkurbanov.

Igor was able to graduate from the conservatory and receive his first diploma - as a conductor of a symphony orchestra. During his student years, the guy did not shy away from any kind of extra work: he worked as a loader, a laborer on the railway, a salesman in a stall, and donated blood as a donor.

Mirkurbanov graduated from the Conservatory in 1985 and was sent to the House of Culture in the city of Yurga, Kemerovo Region. Igor was saved from mortal boredom by entering the Kemerovo Institute of Culture. There the young man met Andrei Panin, who studied at the directing department (Mirkurbanov himself studied at the acting department).

The friends were brought together by common interests and love of music. Friends founded a rock band and performed at student parties. Soon the friends decided to try their luck in Moscow. Igor failed to get into the Shchukin School or the Moscow Art Theater the first time.

We had to unload the cars again and donate blood. The next year, our hero submitted documents to GITIS and took the course of Mark Zakharov and Andrei Goncharov. Igor's adventurous character pushed the young man into new troubles, but this time it did not come to expulsion.

Difficult teenage years

When Igor turned fifteen, the family moved to Kemerovo, where Igor graduated from high school. Having received a certificate, Mirkurbanov went to Moscow with a friend and entered the Gubkin Institute of Oil and Gas Industry, but his studies did not work out. For three months (he couldn’t stand it any longer) he worked at a factory in his small homeland, making parts for cardan shafts in Chimkent. They paid 0.2 kopecks for one part, and in order to get a measly 7-8 rubles per shift and meet the quota, several thousand of them had to be made.

Later, Igor admitted that, of course, he understood how poorly the working class lived, but he had no idea how much. From hard work at the factory, people only dreamed of getting drunk after a shift, and they all died after 50. Then the young man transferred to the Bauman Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, from where he was expelled for blackmail. This was followed by an attempt to continue his studies at the Tomsk Polytechnic Institute, from which he was also expelled three years later for his dark history with drugs. As a native of Shymkent, he was well acquainted with hemp and brought it to his comrades “to try,” although he himself did not smoke. One of his friends “surrendered” him to the police. As a result, Igor spent 15 days in a cell and received a 2-year suspended sentence.

Having learned about this, the TPI administration decided to get rid of the problem student. Igor was shamelessly “failed” in the exams, and when he went to the dean’s office, he heard the cold: “You won’t study with us.” After this, Igor temporarily lost his bearings in life and literally sank to the very bottom: he got a job as a gravedigger in a cemetery and one day got so drunk that he fell into a hole he had dug, miraculously surviving in the forty-degree frost.

The incident at the cemetery helped Mirkurbanov draw the right conclusions

Igor went to his sister in Novosibirsk and entered the conducting department of the local conservatory, which he successfully graduated in 1985. Although here, too, studies were turbulent: dormitory students often sorted things out in fights, and one of these fights acquired colossal proportions. All participants were threatened with prison, and Mirkurbanov decided to pretend to be crazy in order to avoid punishment. The trick worked, but he was forced to spend more than two months in a mental hospital. The actor still remembers this time with some kind of sacred horror: After university, he worked for some time at the House of Culture in the city of Yurga, Kemerovo region, and then entered the acting department of the Kemerovo Institute of Culture. It was there that he met Andrei Panin, who was studying directing.

Igor and Andrey turned out to have a lot in common - both were distinguished by their adventurous character, repeatedly got into scandalous stories and loved to drink. At the same time, they had extraordinary creative abilities and dreamed of demonstrating them to the world. Mirkurbanov and Panin even organized a rock band, with which they performed at student events. However, soon the friends felt cramped in Kemerovo, and they decided to take aim at Moscow.

Igor Mirkurbanov. The fate of a person The first time they failed to enter the capital’s university, the guys had to unload carriages, dig trenches and even donate blood in order to earn a piece of bread. He remembers well the indignation when he saw the capital's abundance of food - while in the provinces people were subsisting on bread and water. Igor lived with a relative whose apartment was located not far from GITIS.

Next door there was a famous beer hall, where students and teachers loved to spend time. It was they who persuaded our hero to enter GITIS, although at first he was more impressed by the Moscow Art Theater School and the Shchukin School. During the entrance exams, Mirkurbanov read a monologue of Prince Myshkin from Dostoevsky - not the most simple material, it is worth noting.

Mirkurbanov’s ability to immerse himself in an image was immediately appreciated

He got used to the character so deeply that he even began to choke from the surging emotions. The members of the admissions committee were greatly impressed by Igor’s performance, and after offering the guy some water, they unanimously sent him to the course of Andrei Goncharov and Mark Zakharov. Real luck smiled on Mirkurbanov, although this time there was some drinking, absenteeism and scandalous stories. However, Goncharov himself stood up for him, who could not allow such an extraordinary, talented and impressive student to be expelled from the university.

Early career (1992-2012)

After graduating from GITIS in 1990, Mirkurbanov joined the troupe of the capital's theater. Mayakovsky. In the second year of work, the aspiring actor was invited to play in the play by Israeli director Yevgeny Arie.

It turned out that the latter arrived in Russia for a reason: the director was selecting talented actors for the new Gesher Theater. Arya liked his work in the production of “Rosenkrantz and Guildestern are Dead” so much that he invited Igor Vitalievich to Israel.

At first, the actor was involved in Russian-language performances:

  • "At the bottom";
  • "Cabal of the Saints";
  • "Idiot";
  • "Tartuffe".

When Mirkurbanov mastered Hebrew, he began performing in Israeli productions. Igor Vitalievich also made his first directorial experience on the stage of Gesher, directing The Cherry Orchard, Moscow-Petushki, and All My Sons. In Israel, the actor gained popularity on screen, starring in the military drama Kedma.

The artist worked on television in the projects “Tormozov.net” and “Double Impact”, and also taught acting in Beit Zvi. Life in Israel was prosperous and calm. But Mirkurbanov’s adventurous nature prevented him from enjoying it fully. The man increasingly began to fly to Russia, where he still had friends from his turbulent youth.

Actor career

Having received his diploma in 1990, Igor was enrolled in the troupe of the Mayakovsky Theater, where he served for two years. At the same time, Mirkurbanov was involved in the play “Rosenkrantz and Guildestern are Dead” by the Israeli director Evgeniy Arie and Edward Rodzinsky’s production “Theater of the Times of Nero and Seneca.” In 1992, Arie returned to Israel, where two years earlier he founded the Gesher Theater. His trip to Moscow was not accidental - he selected suitable artists for his troupe, among whom was Mirkurbanov. Initially, in his new theater, Igor participated only in Russian productions - “The Idiot”, “The Cabal of the Holy One”, “Tartuffe” and “At the Lower Depths” (1992).

Then the actor learned Hebrew and began acting in productions by Jewish directors. Also in the late 90s, as a theater director, Mirkurbanov staged the plays “Moscow-Petushki”, “The Cherry Orchard”, “All My Sons” and many others on the Gesher stage. At the beginning of the 2000s, Igor worked on television, being involved in the programs “Double Impact” and “Brakes.net”, starred in Amos Gitai’s war drama “Kedma” (2002), and also taught at the Beit Zvi acting school. Life in Israel was full, calm and comfortable, but Mirkurbanov’s changeable nature did not give him peace. He increasingly began to fly to his homeland, starred in Russian films and TV series, and took part in theatrical projects.

Igor Mirkurbanov in the drama “Inhale-Exhale”

An important event in his creative career was the main role in Ivan Dykhovichny’s psychological drama “Inhale-Exhale” (2006), for which he was matched with his old friend Andrei Panin. Mirkurbanov managed to create a stunning duet on screen with actress Ekaterina Volkova, and working together with Dykhovichny became a fresh breath of air for his rebellious creative nature. One after another, other films with his participation began to be released: “Ellipsis”, “Antidur”, “Caravan Hunters” (2007), “Generation “P”” (2011), “Fatal Inheritance” (2013) and many others.

In 2007, Igor also began to collaborate with the Taganka Theater, but due to behind-the-scenes intrigues he was soon forced to leave it. But thanks to Yuri Lyubimov, Mirkurbanov met the Japanese director Tadashi Suzuki and was able to participate in his acting training in Togo, playing one of the leading roles in the famous play “Electra”.

In 2012, Igor Vitalievich said goodbye to Israel forever and finally returned to Russia. Having seen Konstantin Bogomolov’s play “The Year When I Was Not Born” on the stage of the Moscow Art Theater, he immediately felt an inexplicable attraction to this director and came to one of his rehearsals. Mirkurbanov, who appeared at eleven o’clock in the morning in a velvet frock coat with huge snow-white lapels, also made an indelible impression on Bogomolov.

The director immediately offered him a role in one of his performances, and from that moment their creative collaboration began, which over time grew into a strong friendship. Oleg Tabakov, who attended one of the rehearsals, was also pleased with the performance of the new actor and, after a few parting phrases, officially invited him to join the theater troupe.

Non-resident career

In 2006, Igor’s bosom friend Andrei Panin “wooed” the artist to the main male role in the psychological thriller “Inhale-Exhale.” This was not a cinematic debut: in the 90s, when “gangster dramas” were in fashion, Mirkurbanov starred in the roles of various petty scumbags:

  • racketeer Tolyan in “Beyond the Last Line”;
  • Narik Minosyan in “Blood for Blood”;
  • in the episode "Poltergeist 90".

Russian directors liked working together with Ekaterina Volkova in “Inhale and Exhale,” and invitations began pouring in for the actor. The artist starred in the following roles:

  • Vadim Petrovich in “Ellipsis”;
  • drug lord Rezo Kutaissky in “Antidur”;
  • Victor in "Montana";
  • Alexandra Divova in “There’s Someone Here”;
