Andrey Zvyagintsev grew up without a father. Mother Galina Aleksandrovna Zvyagintseva worked at the club as an organizer of children's creativity. The family lived very modestly. When Andrei got on his feet in Moscow, he moved his mother to the capital. The family is now renting out a two-room apartment in their native Novosibirsk.

Andrey Zvyagintsev never dreamed of becoming a director. Since childhood, he dreamed of the stage, of an acting career. When he saw it on the screen, he admits that something turned upside down inside him. He realized that he lacked education (at that time Andrei worked at the Novosibirsk Youth Theater). It was this “meeting” with Al Pacino that forced Andrei Zvyagintsev to leave the local theater, go to serve in the army, and then go to Moscow and enter GITIS. By the way, the director had the opportunity to thank his idol.

Moscow greeted the director harshly. For three years, Andrei Zvyagintsev had to work as a watchman, this gave him the right to live for free in the very center of the city, not far from the Mayakovsky Theater. Four students from the Faculty of Philosophy of Moscow State University lived with the future director. True, the joy was short-lived.

The most difficult times came when the apartment was taken away. I left my unprestigious job, but couldn’t find another one. “I was really starving, I couldn’t find a job, I went to all possible auditions and auditions, but I still didn’t even have money for a bus ticket,” said the director. A friend who at that time was creating commercials came to the rescue. Zvyagintsev joined him. Along the way, he also starred in episodic roles in the films “Shirley-myrli”, “Kitten”, “Reflection”, “Love to the grave”.

Andrey made his debut as a director on Ren TV. He made a film as part of a cycle called “The Black Room”. These were short stories “Choice”, “Bushido” and “Obscure”. About the film “Return” by Zvyagintsev In 2003, viewers were able to appreciate the full-length film by Zvyagintsev. He called it "The Return". As critics later noted, the plot develops slowly. The film has long close-ups and landscapes. This is unusual for modern cinema. However, the director said in an interview that this is how he feels the world, these are the rhythms of life that he feels. This is what Zvyagintsev sought to show the viewer, so that when sitting in front of the screen, people would feel that this is exactly how life flows. “Cinema in detail” about the film “Exile.” Critics and distributors in advance dubbed this film undistributable, believing that it would not be interesting to a general audience . Personal life

Personal life is a separate page in the master’s biography, not inferior in intensity to cinematic passions. In his last year at theater school, Andrei met Vera Sergeeva, who served at the Old House theater. The common-law wife was 5 years older and gave her beloved two children. One of the twins died a week later. The second, Nikita, lives in Novosibirsk, graduated from a music college, owns his own business, and got married. He rarely sees his father, but the director, according to media reports, supports his son.

In Moscow, Zvyagintsev’s heart was won by fellow GITIS student Inna. The girl did not graduate from university, but became a doctor. The young people got married in 1988, but separated on the initiative of his wife - Inna met someone else.

After the divorce, Andrei became interested in the model and future star of the television reality series “The Last Hero,” Inna Gomez, whom he directed in his debut directorial project, “The Black Room.”

Then the director lived with actress Irina Grineva for 6 years. After the divorce, the former spouses arranged their personal lives. Irina married figure skater Maxim Shabalin, and Zvyagintsev met Anna Matveeva, who in 2009 gave birth to his son Peter.

Anna is a photographer and editor, a graduate of the Faculty of Economics of VGIK. What attracted the woman to her husband was a sense of freedom and a reluctance to make compromises in art. Matveeva admitted that after meeting Andrey she began to watch films in a new way - consciously, as if plunging into the narrative.

However, such a unity of views did not save the family from destruction. In September 2018, Zvyagintsev and Matveeva divorced, the child remained with his mother. At the Cannes Film Festival, held in May, Andrei appeared arm in arm with Léa Seydoux. The media were quick to comment on how the French actress looked at the Russian director. However, the journalists could have exaggerated, because the heroes of the first pages became members of the film screening jury.

Andrey Zvyagintsev is not a fan of social networks. I went to Instagram only once, not to look at photos, but to find out the audience’s reaction to “Loveless,” when critics and officials once again called the director’s film Russophobic. I made sure that people understood and accepted the film. Andrey is not ready to create a personal page yet.
