But how to attract so many people? Promise a fun party? It was not only Shaur who organized such events. Concerts with drag queens did not surprise anyone either. The sailor took a risk again - he announced that he was organizing a costume party with a wedding: he would be the groom, and dancer Lev Savitsky would be the bride in a dress and veil. They decided to organize the evening in the spacious apartment of policeman Alexander Michel, which could easily accommodate a hundred people.
Rumors of an unprecedented wedding spread throughout Petrograd. Shaur's agents (among whom was naval officer Mikhail Panshin, a student at the political institute) scoured addresses and handed out invitations to the evening. Lev Savitsky, who did not suspect anything about the raid, came up with a script for the action together with Evgeny Kiselev. Both danced professionally and were famous drag queen actors in bohemian Petrograd.
The script was fiery. After the guests had gathered, at about 10 o’clock in the evening, a wedding ceremony was to take place in a small room with dance elements from the first act of the ballet “Giselle”. Alexander Michel was chosen as the imprisoned father, and Prince Georgy Avalov as the imprisoned mother. The latter was supposed to bless the newlyweds with bread and salt. Then the procession moved to a large hall, where the couple was congratulated, after which Lev Savitsky changed into a different costume and performed two ballet numbers. The evening ended with general dancing and drinking.
Everyone liked the idea and script extremely much.
On the evening of January 15, 1921, dozens of guests gathered at Alexander Michel’s apartment at No. 6 on Simeonovskaya Street. The wedding ceremony began. Everything went according to script. Entering the hall, congratulations, kisses, photographs for memory. And suddenly - whistles, shouts of “stop”, clanging of bolts. Raid! The police burst into the apartment.
The head of the criminal investigation department, Kramer, wrote into the protocol: “We arrived at the indicated apartment and found 95 people, partially dressed in women’s clothes.”
This was Afanasy Shaur's finest hour. He miscalculated only one thing: he did not take into account what the detainees would say about him during interrogations.
