"One love for life"

The last 5 years of the life of the great genius of theater and cinema were overshadowed by a tragic event - his beloved and only wife Nina Lapshinova died. Mark Anatolyevich spoke without embellishment how much he misses the love of his life.

Young Nina and Mark met while studying at GITIS. As a student at the theater institute, Mark volunteered to help Lapshinova design a wall newspaper. Their work ignited a romantic flame between people, and soon Zakharov proposed to his future wife. Mark Zakharov and Nina Lapshinova lived together for 58 years. In this wonderful union their only daughter, Alexandra Zakharova, appeared.

[edit] Death and reactions to it

On September 28, 2021, the director of the Lenkom Theater Mark Varshaver announced the death of Zakharov, adding: “The last of the Mohicans has died.” Mark Zakharov died on this day from bilateral pneumonia, less than a month before his birthday (on October 13 he would have turned 86 years old). The farewell took place on October 1 on the main stage of Lenkom. It was attended by Alexander Kalyagin, Galina Volchek, Alexander Shirvindt, Evgeny Mironov and many representatives of the troupe, the theater world, fans and admirers. Inna Churikova said: “This phenomenon happened. He was a necessary person for all of us. With his energy, with his sense of humor. With his understanding of the genre. He raised us all this way. I can't believe it, I don't want to believe it. Such a disaster. This is a strong blow."[2][3].

Mark Anatolyevich Zakharov is buried at the Novodevichy cemetery. Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov expressed condolences on behalf of Vladimir Putin. Condolences were expressed by Oleg Basilashvili, Liya Akhedzhakova, Mikhail Boyarsky, Konstantin Raikin, Elena Koreneva and others (in addition to Russian politicians, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Edgar Rinkevich)[4].

Vadim Nikolaev published a poem “In Memory of Mark Zakharov.” It goes beyond the scope of an ordinary poem on the death of a famous person, in many ways it is close to the ideas of the book by theater critic Marina Davydova, who belongs to the same generation, “The End of a Theater Era” and, apparently, it is no coincidence that it was not written immediately after death (the date is indicated)[5]. (Davydova wrote during Zakharov’s lifetime: “...it is “Lenkom” - a rare theater today, in which everything and everyone is determined by a single creative will. Such theaters of one director are becoming fewer and fewer and soon, it seems, there will not be any, simply because there are no there will be people capable of taking upon themselves the fullness, and with it the whole burden of autocracy that seems tempting to others”)[6].

However, scandalous statements were also made, including on the Internet, with the help of which, as the portal rambler.ru points out, famous bloggers promoted the death of the director[7].

The work of Mark Zakharov and his awards

Despite his venerable age, Mark Zakharov continued to serve in his beloved Lenkom Theater and produced his own theatrical productions. At different times, many famous actors managed to work under his wing: Alexander Abdulov, Nikolai Karachentsev, Inna Churikova and others. Next month the theater was to tour in St. Petersburg. Mark Zakharov always accompanied the production troupe during tours, but this time the tradition will be broken by a sad event.

The great director devoted himself entirely to his work both on the theater stage and on the film stage. “The Same Munchausen”, “An Ordinary Miracle”, “Formula of Love” - these and other films from the director’s filmography forever won the hearts of millions of viewers in Russia and other countries of the world. His creative word was unshakable, and his advice and recommendations became “gifts of fate” for many famous theater and film stars. Friends, family, colleagues, fans - everyone agrees that Mark Anatolyevich is an indisputable authority in the world of theatrical and cinematic art

Mark Zakharov has a huge number of awards awarded at the state level. In 2021, the director, actor, teacher and writer was awarded the title of Hero of Labor of the Russian Federation. Before this, the legend had the title of “People’s Artist of the USSR” and 3 State Prizes of Russia. Mark Zakharov was also a Full Knight of the Order of Merit for the Fatherland.

Mark Zakharov biography

Career: actor, film, director, screenwriter Date of birth: October 13, 1933 Libra Age: 85 years Place of birth: Moscow, Russia Height: 175 Marital status: widower

Biography Mark Zakharov is a Soviet and Russian theater and film director, actor, screenwriter and writer. An entire theatrical era is associated with his name, his performances became the talk of the town, and his films were dissected for quotes. But the beginning of his career did not promise such a bright continuation.

Childhood and youth

Mark Anatolyevich Zakharov was born in Moscow in 1933. The nationality of the director is Russian. During the revolution, Mark's father studied at the Voronezh Cadet Corps. The man supported the Red Army soldiers by joining the army and went a long way from Voronezh to Warsaw. After the Civil War he worked in the military physical education sector. The mother of the future director dreamed of becoming an actress. The woman studied acting from Yuri Zavadsky.

In 1934, the father of the family was arrested and charged with Article 58. For counter-revolutionary activities they are sentenced to 3 years in captivity and exile. The mother abandoned dreams of a theatrical future, leaving for her husband. Then my father was banned from entering Moscow. The mother, left without a husband, worked a lot. Mark often communicated with his maternal grandmother, Sofia Nikolaevna. The woman at that time worked as the head of an orphanage.

In 1943, after the death of their grandmother, the family returned to Moscow. They barely got 2 rooms in a communal apartment. As Mark Zakharov himself writes: “A hard, half-starved, unpromising life began.”

My father got a job in the security units of the Moscow garrison. But under the same Article 58, the man is expelled from Moscow again. Mother worked as a teacher in drama clubs for children. The woman also included her son in the activities.

At that time, Mark Zakharov was fascinated by Obraztsov’s Puppet Theater. And as a teenager, he attended a drama club led by his mother and, together with Andrei Tarkovsky, studied in the theater group of the House of Pioneers.

After school, Mark Zakharov did not have a clear goal. The young man did not get into the Institute of Architecture through a competition; he was not accepted into the Military Engineering Academy because of his father’s “tainted” biography. Then the mother intervened. She had a prophetic dream that revealed to her the calling of her son. Before this, the woman was against Mark linking his fate with the theater.

The happy applicant came to the preliminary audition at the Moscow Art Theater. Mark loudly and enthusiastically read Burns's Heather Honey, translated by Marshak. And failed. Then his mother suggested that Mark attend the exam with “The Song of the Merchant Kalashnikov.” The woman helped her son learn the program, after which he submitted documents to GITIS and successfully entered there.

Theater

Zakharov's creative biography began in the theater. Already in his second year, Mark began to appear on stage with episodic roles. After graduation, he entered the Perm Regional Drama Theater.

The 3 years spent in Perm turned out to be creatively productive. Mark Anatolyevich writes and draws a lot, and his cartoon illustrations even end up in the local press; he also works on the radio and takes pleasure in organizing skits. In Perm, together with Chekmarev, Zakharov’s first performance was staged. Mark felt that he had the willpower to work with actors. Zakharov had ideas that people were willing to listen to.

In 1959, Mark Anatolyevich again came to Moscow with his wife, actress Nina Lapshinova, and got a job at the theater. N.V. Gogol. At this time, the desire to take up the pen does not leave him. Zakharov gains an invaluable literary skill.

Mark Anatolyevich’s ability to convey the human essence in a humorous story helped him in creating the theatrical productions “Hoax”, “Barbarian and Heretic”. In 1964, Mark Zakharov realized that a certain milestone had been reached. He can no longer be an actor and does not want to. All his energy and desire are aimed at achieving directorial success.

The stage debut at the Moscow State University Student Theater was the play “Dragon”. Later, Mark Anatolyevich will return to this material based on Evgeniy Schwartz, working on the film “Kill the Dragon.” The Moscow State University student theater became the starting point in his directorial career. Zakharov stages many performances there: “I Want to Be Honest” by Vladimir Voinovich, “The Career of Arturo Ui” by Bertolt Brecht and others.

In 1965 he worked on the professional stage of the Moscow Satire Theater. The play “Profitable Place” staged by Zakharov based on Alexander Ostrovsky was performed 40 times with great success. Then the production was banned. The same thing happened with the next comedy “Banquet”. Nevertheless, Zakharov's performances have always been popular.

In 1973, Mark Anatolyevich headed the Moscow Lenkom Theater. A year later, a notable event in the theater’s repertoire was the production of Grigory Gorin’s play “Til,” in which Inna Churikova, Nikolai Karachentsov, and Elena Shanina were involved. A year later, a dramatization of Boris Vasiliev’s work “Not on the Lists” was released. In 1976, the director and theater artists presented a new masterpiece to the audience - “The Star and Death of Joaquin Murrieta.”

In 1981, Lenkom literally “blowed up” theatrical Moscow with its production of “Juno and Avos”. It was impossible to get tickets for the screenings, and the audience sang along with the closing chorus of “Hallelujah of Love” every time with tears in their eyes.

In 1983, the theater went on tour to Paris, where it performed at the Pierre Cardin Cultural Center. The famous rock opera “Juno and Avos” is well received. The performance is also being seen by audiences in the USA, Germany, and Holland.

The director has repeatedly stated that he does not welcome television versions of performances, since modern technology can do a lot, but does not convey the special atmosphere and energy that comes from the artists on stage. And this sometimes constitutes the whole “salt” of the theater. But still, the television version of the legendary production appeared twice - in 1983 and 2002.

Later, the number of works by Mark Zakharov was replenished with the performances “Three Girls in Blue” by Lyudmila Petrushevskaya, “Crazy Day, or The Marriage of Figaro” by Pierre-Augustin Beaumarchais, “The Seagull” by Anton Chekhov, “The Marriage” by Nikolai Gogol, “Peer Gynt” by Henry Ibsen. Zakharov’s latest productions to date are “Walpurgis Night” and “The Day of the Oprichnik,” which appeared in the theater’s repertoire in 2015 and 2016.

In November 2021, director Konstantin Bogomolov reported on his Facebook page that the Lenkom artistic council removed his play “The Prince,” based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel “The Idiot,” from the repertoire. This performance caused a scandal in the theater community.

Mark Zakharov commented on the production, saying that it was removed from the repertoire due to insufficient attendance. Zakharov noted that he looked at which performances could be removed from the poster. As a result, the director decided that it was necessary to remove those that did not attract one hundred percent full houses. The artistic director also added that “The Prince” was temporarily removed from the repertoire, and the production itself will be “mothballed.”

Today Mark Anatolyevich is a teacher. He is a professor at the department of directing at GITIS. Zakharov began his teaching career back in 1983.

Mark Zakharov is interested not only in theatrical creativity. In 2016, he gave an interview regarding the development of Russian science and industry. According to Zakharov, politics, the national idea and patriotism are important for society, since the future of the state depends on such a component.

In 1976, he tried his hand at cinema. The result is a film that audiences know and love to this day - “12 Chairs” with Andrei Mironov.

Personal life

In her youth, she was an actress; the girl studied with Mark on a parallel course. Their acquaintance occurred during the joint publication of a wall newspaper. It is interesting that Nina called her future husband “Zakharov-Prezakharov” and with this phrase she accidentally struck Mark right in the heart.

The fellow student did not hesitate to propose marriage, and Lapshinova easily agreed. At first, Nina was more successful than Mark professionally, but thanks to his wife, Zakharov was able to discern his talent as a director. In family photos, the couple always looked happy.

6 years after the wedding, there was an addition to the family - a daughter, Alexandra Zakharov, was born, for the sake of raising whom her mother left the theater. Later, Sasha followed in her mother’s footsteps. She successfully realized herself under the leadership of her father in his performances and films, while remaining a bright individual. During her service in the theater, Alexandra received the nickname Princess “Lenkom”.

In 2014, at the age of 83, Nina Tikhonovna died of cancer. At this time, Mark Zakharov was undergoing treatment in Germany due to a leg injury. Father and daughter took the loss hard.

Theater and film actor Oleg Basilashvili called Zakharov’s departure “unexpected.” He noted that this is an irreparable loss and a heavy blow not only for Russian theatrical art, but equally for the world. Andrei Urgant also commented on the death of Mark Zakharov. In an interview, he said that his personal acquaintance with the theatrical genius occurred in his childhood. In the memories of Urgant Sr., he was imprinted, first of all, as a wonderful person who treated Andrei’s mother with warmth and was a constant and unchanging guest of many theater skits. “No matter how unfortunate it is, this is the natural end of a long journey. He was many years old, but this is no consolation for the loss of such a great man,” the actor added.

Inna Churikova, one of Mark Zakharov’s most beloved artists, still cannot comprehend the news about the passing of a close friend. According to her, this is a unique, irreplaceable and honest person who is needed by everyone. Thanks to his wisdom, talent, sense of humor, energy and understanding of the genre, she became exactly the artist that many now know her to be.

The star of the Russian pop scene, Philip Kirkorov, also sent his condolences. His films and performances have become a creative reference point, to which the pop king of the Russian stage still strives. “You are a master! Thank you for the opportunity to live and create with you,” added Kirkorov.
