Childhood and adolescence

Masha Baeva is a native Muscovite. She was born and raised in a family that had nothing to do with cinema and theater (though her father played the accordion), but from early childhood she was sure that in the future she would become an actress. Together with her sister Valentina, she performed improvised performances in front of dolls, recited poems, sang songs and ditties, imagining herself as a star on the world stage.

To develop the creative potential of their daughters, their parents first enrolled them in the choir of the ensemble named after Loktev, and then in the dance group “Nuance”. Later, the girls began studying in the children's studio at the Theater of Young Muscovites. Maria still fondly remembers her first teacher, Larisa Blinova, who taught her the basics of acting. This was followed by classes at the school-studio “Yeralash” and filming in the film almanac of the same name. As a teenager, Masha became interested in poetry and began writing poetry herself.

Childhood and youth

Maria Baeva was born on March 9, 1989 in Moscow. From early childhood she showed excellent artistic abilities.

While still very young, she and her sister loved to organize puppet shows at home.

When Maria was 6 years old, she was sent to the choir of a song and dance ensemble. There the girl learned the basics of vocal and dance art.

Later, Baeva began to attend the Theater of Young Muscovites, and also go to modern dances.

First roles

In high school, the girl finally decided on her choice of profession and began to prepare to enter the theater institute. But she didn’t pass the competition either to Shchuka or to GITIS, and became a student at the paid department of the International Slavic Institute, taking a course with the famous Lyudmila Ivanova.

The girl paid for her studies herself, fortunately at that time she began to appear on screens. First in episodic roles (“Who’s the Boss?”), then more serious work awaited her, for example, Dasha from the melodrama “The Adult Life of Polina Subbotina’s Girl” or Oksana from the film “Take Me with You.”

A landmark work was Dusya from the series “Wild” - the daughter of an uncompromising police captain (Igor Lifanov), who inherited a violent temper from her father. This was the actress's first detective series. On the set, she had to learn hand-to-hand combat, because her heroine did not skimp on slaps on the head for the offenders.

Actress Maria Baeva

Of course, even as a schoolgirl, Maria saw herself exclusively as an actress. Moreover, already in her teens she tried acting: the girl was invited to the children's humor magazine “Yeralash”. After the graduation party, the girl applied to theater universities in the capital, but was accepted only to the International Slavic Institute named after Gabriel Derzhavin. However, the actress was not upset and enjoyed studying on Lyudmila Ivanova’s course.

Further career

In 2010, Baeva successfully graduated from university and completely devoted herself to her favorite profession. By this time, Baeva already had more than a dozen fairly successful film works and commercial shooting under her belt. At first, the young actress was mainly still offered the roles of teenage girls with a difficult fate, trying with all their might to make their way in life (as in the sequels of the series “Wild,” which aired from 2011 to 2013).

On the set of the film “Angelica”

Despite the fact that Masha in life is completely different from her heroines, she liked this transformation. Over time, the actress wanted to go beyond her usual role and try on deeper character roles. In 2014, she received such an opportunity. The STS channel produced a funny youth comedy “Angelica”, in which Masha played the friend of the main character, 20-year-old Zhenya Burdukovskaya. The star of the series was Angelica Kashirina.

Maria Baeva in the film “Duel. Pushkin - Lermontov"

After the film was released on television, the actress gained long-awaited fame, and directors began to offer her a wide variety of roles. Among them is an interesting work in the historical film “Duel. Pushkin - Lermontov”, in which Maria reincarnated as the daughter of the great poet. The main feature of the film was that the creators decided to fantasize about how the lives of Pushkin and Lermontov would have turned out if they had not died in a duel.

Another notable work in Baeva’s filmography was the main role in the domestic horror film “The Witch,” where she played a downtrodden girl with mystical abilities that were revealed due to a classic love triangle in a children’s camp. Her character's rival Tony was played by Sofia Shutkina.

Actress Maria Baeva: “I played a witch with superpowers”

Actress Maria Baeva, photos provided by the heroine of the publication Maria Baeva was born in Moscow. The viewer knows the actress from her roles in such films and TV series as “Wild”, “Stanitsa”, “Angelika”, “The Witch”, “Journey to the Center of the Soul”, etc.

— Maria, as a child you starred in “Jumble.” Tell us about some of the brightest stories!

— I played the role of a harmful, freckled girl with such bagels on her head. She was a gossip who talked about everyone and everything. At first, my heroine was jealous when one boy carried an injured girl in his arms. And when the boy himself fell from the unbearable weight, and the injured girl was already carrying him, my heroine ironically remarked: “This is probably love”...

— How do you feel about gossip in life? Are you listening?

- No, I try not to gossip. This is rubbish. For me it’s extra negative energy. Why should I let her in? Why discuss someone when I don’t know the circumstances at all, I don’t know what events preceded it.

— A lot of rubbish comes from the Internet. How deep are you online?

— I have a special relationship with the Internet, because I don’t really like to promote myself. I can talk about my new works on Instagram, Facebook, and post photos from the shoot. This is a direct part of the profession. But I don’t show off my personal life. There was a time when I left Instagram for a year and felt great. But you can’t live without the Internet completely. For example, I watch films and TV series on different Internet platforms.

— In the famous TV series “Wild” you played the daughter of Igor Lifanov’s character. How did you become friends during filming?

“Wild” was a big project, it gave me a lot. Because I came there as an aspiring actress, the series was filmed for a long time, and we eventually became a big family. Igor Lifanov and I discussed a lot about how to make our relationship truly family, so that the viewer would believe that we are really father and daughter.

We have formed a real team. We all felt the courage and drive on set. We changed what was written in the script a little on set to suit ourselves, and seemingly ordinary scenes turned into extraordinary, memorable ones. Therefore, it seems to me that the audience really loved our characters.

— What did you specifically train for this or that role?

— I played a policeman in the TV series “Cop” and, in preparation for filming, I went to a real police station, watched how interrogations were conducted, and went to the crime scene. There, according to the plot, an American policeman comes to Russia on an exchange, and different stories happen to him. My character Polina mainly works in the department, and her work is different from what I observed in the real police department. But still, this experience helped me tune into a specific environment and observe people in the field where my heroine works.

— Which role was the most physically challenging for you?

— This is a role in the film “The Witch.” According to the plot, my heroine has superpowers. She can heal with her hands and manipulate objects. And in order for it to really look on camera, I had to exert a lot of physical effort. For example, I moved a bus that hung over a cliff with the power of my thoughts. Emotions were overflowing.

We filmed on Lake Issyk-Kul. The places are beautiful, but we were there in June. And in June they are not in season. It was very cold, high altitude. And at this time no one swims in the lake. And we had a lot of scenes on location. My heroine was drowned in the lake. They fought on the sand. In general, I had to work hard physically. I've been very exhausted this month.

- How about psychologically? Is it difficult to be a real witch?

— It’s difficult, but I somehow try to stay a little away from the characters, not to get caught up in them. My heroine does not know herself, she does not fully understand her abilities, she is afraid of them. And to play it for real, so that the audience would believe it, it was necessary to make a lot of effort.

— Have you encountered any paranormal phenomena or anything unusual in your life?

- No. I won't say that I don't believe it, but I try not to touch on it. All kinds of predictions, astrology, black magic, horoscopes. All this is foreign to me.

— You play quite a lot in melodramas. And you probably have to cry often. How do you bring tears?

“It’s very difficult for me to cry.” For me this is a whole problem. I was thinking of somehow technically learning how to make myself cry, to imagine some images in my head. But so far it’s not working out very well.

- There is a mint pencil.

- Well, yes, you can help yourself that way. But still, you can’t fool your eyes. Your eyes turn red somehow in a special way from the pencil, and it’s clear that you’re not really crying.

— Which of our directors do you dream of starring in?

— I really like Boris Khlebnikov. He is making wonderful TV series now - “An Ordinary Woman”, “Storm”. I see how his actors work, even those whom I have seen in other films. Khlebnikov's work is very real. And this captivates me.

— Do you think beauty helps in the acting profession, or sometimes gets in the way?

— It’s probably hard for girls who have ideal beauty. In the sense that they are viewed in only one direction - a beautiful girl and that’s it. I know this from my colleagues, girls, who are offered the same roles of beauties. But they want to play something different, but they are not offered anything else. In this sense, I am a happy person. God gave me such an appearance that I can play both a dirty person and a pretty girl. A lot depends on the makeup and costume.

— What role and in what film do you need to play to become as popular as Kristina Asmus or Katya Shpitsa?

— Firstly, you shouldn’t want to become “like someone else,” you need to remain yourself. It seems to me that at some point you have to get lucky with a project that will take you to a new level. The same Katya Shpitsa had a military project “Katya”, after which filmmakers and audiences recognized her, and they began to invite her to other projects. Kristina Asmus had “Interns”. You need a film or TV series like this for your career to take off.

— In the film “Duel. Pushkin - Lermontov" you played the youngest daughter of Alexander Sergeevich Natasha. What unusual things did you learn about her while preparing for filming?

— The film presents an alternative history: what would have happened if Pushkin and Lermontov had not died in a duel. Twenty years later they met, and Natasha and Mikhail Yuryevich began an affair...What unusual things did you learn about Natalya? I read a lot about her. Everyone called her “imp Tasha.” She had her father's character. She was an unapologetic “tomboy,” if one can say so in a modern way. Natasha did things that were not accepted at that time. When Pushkin died, she was not even a year old...

Actor Yuri Baturin: about religion, “Late Date” and Ivan the Terrible

— In the series “Line of Light” we are talking about a religious sect. What was interesting about that filming?

— This picture is very dear to me. I have a big role there. There is some kind of transformation happening with my heroine. She was a frightened girl who lives in a sect. But when she finds out that the head of the sect is her father, my heroine begins to behave completely differently. She becomes his assistant and takes on a lot. And in the end he overthrows his own father... Worshiping some person is a danger, a deception. It’s a pity that this instructive series has so far been shown only in Ukraine.

— What hobbies do you have, besides cinema and theater?

— I’ve been doing yoga for five years now, I really like it. I have reached certain heights and am doing various complex asanas. I don’t do the splits, but I have a good stretch.

— Which of the old school actors did you act with? What did they impress you with, what did they teach you?

— In the film “Fire,” which will be released in a year, we starred with Yuri Aleksandrovich Kuznetsov. He played my father, and every day it was such a school! He didn’t teach me anything, didn’t tell me how to play, I just watched how he worked and absorbed this school in every mise-en-scène.

There was such a story. We, several actors, stood together, and in front of us the house was burning. Well, it kind of burned. We had to act out our excitement about it. And Yuri Alexandrovich says: “Imagine as if you see a small board in this house, how it burns.” And when we looked at it, squinting, the scene was played very believably. A trifle, but how it all played!
