Family

The history of Dmitry Nagiyev’s family is interesting and unusual. His ancestors lived in Iran, but after the end of the First World War, dark times came: constant hunger and disease pushed people to leave their homes and move to new countries, towards the unknown. The family of the father of the future artist was no exception.

Dmitry’s ancestors moved to Turkmenistan to start a new and carefree life there, but the road turned out to be very difficult: almost all family members died, only the nine-year-old boy Gulam, the grandfather of the future showman, survived. Gulam was taken to an orphanage, where he received his new surname - Nagiyev, in honor of the people who found him and did not let him die of hunger. The surname in Azerbaijani translates as “Savior of the World.” Gulam was later christened Nikolai. Dmitry's grandfather knew Arabic and Turkmen, but in most cases spoke Russian. Nikolai (Gulam) died in 1976 from gangrene.

Gulam's wife and paternal grandmother was Gertrude Sopke, who had German and Latvian roots. Gertrude worked as a ballerina at the Moscow Bolshoi Theater; after the wedding, the woman moved to her husband in Turkmenistan, and after his death in 1976, she returned back to Russia.

In the marriage of Gulam and Gertrude, a son was born, the father of Dmitry Nagiyev - Vladimir. Since childhood, Vladimir Nikolaevich Nagiyev dreamed of a big stage and an acting career. Until he was seventeen years old, he played in the Ashgabat Red Army Theater. Afterwards he went to Moscow to enter the theater school and fulfill his dream, but he was not accepted into the university. Having failed the exams, Vladimir left for Leningrad, where he went to work at an optical-mechanical plant. In Leningrad, Vladimir met his first love - Lyudmila Zakharovna. She was a philologist and taught foreign languages at the Military Academy of Communications.

Lyudmila's father, maternal grandfather of Dmitry Nagiyev, held a high position in the CPSU, he was the first secretary of the Petrograd district committee. After the announcement of the Great Patriotic War, he went to the front. Zakhar participated in many military operations, including on the Nevsky Piglet, where he was seriously wounded: an enemy bullet flew literally three to four cm from his heart. After a long recovery, the artist’s grandfather returned to the Red Army. Dmitry very often spoke about his grandfather in his programs, talking about his life and quoting him.

The artist’s maternal grandmother’s name was Lyudmila Ivanovna. She was a very talented and creative person and loved art. The woman worked at the St. Petersburg Kirov Theater.

Father's line

The first owner of the now well-known surname was Dmitry Nagiyev’s grandfather Gulam (translated from Arabic as “scientist”). Until the end of the First World War, Ghulam lived in Iran with his parents. However, after that the family fled the country to Turkmenistan. True, only Gulam reached Ashgabat: his father and mother died on the way from hunger. Therefore, the boy ended up in one of the Turkmen orphanages. There he acquired a new name, Nikolai, and the common Azerbaijani and Lezgin surname Nagiyev (translated from Azerbaijani as “savior of the world”). Gulam owed his last name to the people who picked him up and sent him to a boarding school.

When Gulam grew up, fate brought him together with Dmitry Nagiyev’s future grandmother, Gertrude Tsopke, who was evacuated from Moscow to Ashgabat. On her mother's side, Gertrude was Latvian. Her Baltic ancestors bore the surname Leie. But Gertrude’s father came from a German family. However, for the lover Nikolai Nagiyev, the girl’s origin did not matter at all. Tsopke answered the chosen one in the same way. The feelings turned out to be so strong that, having met Nikolai, Gertrude never returned to the capital. And this despite the fact that she danced in the corps de ballet of the legendary Bolshoi Theater. In Turkmenistan, the Nagiyev couple had a son, Vladimir, the father of a famous actor.
