Allan Chumak: biography, photo, personal life
TASS DOSSIER. On the night of October 9-10, 2021, it became known that Allan Chumak, who gained fame in the USSR during the years of perestroika thanks to his “television healing” sessions, died in Moscow at the age of 83.
Allan Vladimirovich Chumak was born on May 26, 1935 in Moscow. In an interview he said that he received an “American” name at the behest of his father, Vladimir Andreevich (1905-1964), who worked as a translator.
Allan Chumak graduated from the Moscow State Central Order of Lenin Institute of Physical Culture (now the Russian State University of Physical Culture, Sports, Youth and Tourism) with a degree in trainer-teacher, then from the Faculty of Journalism of Moscow State University. M. V. Lomonosov.
Later, in an interview, he stated that he was forced to end his coaching career because of the idea made at sports conferences to provide athletes with the opportunity to relieve stress with alcohol.
In 1960-1962, he was an employee of the district committee of the Komsomol of the Zhdanovsky district of Moscow, then, after a conflict with the management, he moved to the Moscow City Council of Trade Unions.
In the early 1960s, he became interested in journalism, and even before graduating from Moscow State University, he began writing essays for the newspapers Moskovsky Komsomolets, Trud, and others.
In 1975-1981 - editor of the joint editorial office of the GDR and Poland of the Novosti Press Agency (APN). In 1981-1983, he was a correspondent for the Moscow regional newspaper Leninsky Znamya.
In the late 1970s, while preparing exposé materials about charlatan healers, I met a number of “psychics.” After this, as Chumak himself wrote in his books, he discovered a “gift”, as well as the ability to see “people’s auras.”
In 1983, Chumak left journalism and began working as an assistant at the Research Institute of General Pedagogical Psychology of the USSR Academy of Pedagogical Sciences. At the same time, he began to take up healing, he said, and began to see patients with various diseases.
The latter gained all-Union fame in August 1989, when “Health Sessions” with his participation began to be shown on the morning program of Central Television “120 minutes”.
During each session, which lasted 8-10 minutes, Chumak invited viewers to relax, place jars, bottles of water or creams in tubes and bottles in front of the TV.
After that, without uttering a word, moving his lips and making passes with his hands, he “charged” the objects displayed by viewers on their screens.
He also conducted public paid sessions of “energy charging” with water, ointments, creams, as well as “healing the sick.”
In the academic environment, Chumak was never taken seriously. In 1999, RAS academician Vitaly Ginzburg called him a “well-known charlatan,” and the head of the RAS commission on pseudoscience, Eduard Kruglyakov, argued that it was with the appearance on the screens of “newly-minted miracle workers like Chumak” that the “massive introduction of pseudoscience” began in Russia.
In 1990, Chumak founded, which was engaged in the sale of drinks and creams, “charged” by him in advance (his younger brother, Walter, ran the company).
So, in October 1992, his in-person “healing sessions” attracted no more than 200 people.
Until 1995, television programs with his participation continued to be broadcast on the Moscow TV channel. Subsequently, Chumak continued to travel around Russia and published videos on the Internet in the 2000s.

How many people remember Allan Chumak, the “healer” who in the early 90s convinced millions of people that he could cure them of all sorts of ailments if they just turned on their televisions and sat in front of them for several hours in a row.
I was a child at that time and remember very well how my mother, my grandmothers and aunties filled three-liter jars with tap water, placed them in front of the TV and waited for the liquid to be charged with positive energy and become healing.
Mom once practiced all this for a short time; she didn’t have much free time: work, family, gardening, kitchen, laundry. But grandma decided to recharge herself with magic to the fullest.
But not right away, at first I watched with curiosity what was happening on the TV screen, trying to understand why psychics were doing all this and why crowds of people were coming to them.
It should be noted that I have had a spirit of rebellion since birth, and I also like to look for logic in everything. But now, looking at how my relatives and neighbors were slowly starting to go crazy, I began to understand that all this was just a scam of suckers and nothing more.
I could still understand why all these less educated neighbors were charging jars of water, but why did my smart, perspicacious grandmother, who seemed wise to me, do it?
Although, perhaps, being a loving child, I simply idealized her; at one time she took her granddaughter to see her whispering grandmother, who tried to cure me of a small lipoma on my shoulder for a bag of dubious quality caramels.
I understood that all this was nonsense, the healer would not help here, but out of respect and love for my grandmother I went and was almost not indignant, I only said a couple of times, they say, well, you’ll see for yourself, grandma, that nothing will work out.
But I flatly refused to drink the water charged by Allan Chumak, in addition, I really disturbed my relatives in watching all these programs, I made noise, ran around the room and urged them to come to their senses.
They didn’t listen to me, naturally, they called me a fool, but after a couple of months they themselves realized that this water did not help them with their illnesses, and soon the fashion for Allan Chumak and Anatoly Kashpirovsky passed away, only loyal fans remained with him, whom, as It turned out there were a lot.
There are billions of people who want to believe in such miracles! People are gullible and suggestible, they hang garlic beads around their necks so as not to get the flu, against their will they drink three liters of water a day so as not to become dehydrated, they believe that if you touch a toad, warts will grow on your hands, and if you rub these shoots with a freshly cut chicken butt, and then bury it at the intersection of four roads, then everything will pass.

In the late 1980s, Allan Chumak became the most famous healer and psychic in the Soviet Union. When he conducted “healing sessions” and “charged” water on TV, millions of citizens thirsting for healing gathered in front of the screens.
They believed that water, ointments and creams “from Chumak” would certainly heal, rejuvenate and bring good luck. Thousands of people stated that Allan Vladimirovich helped, and the diseases went away.
Skeptics called the “healer” a charlatan and argued that Allan Chumak was helping himself with his gaze and hand movements on the other side of the screen, while others were either “cured” of imaginary diseases, or the placebo effect was in effect.
The fact remains undeniable that Allan Chumak became a legend of his time, and with his appearance in the USSR, citizens began to become acquainted with extrasensory perception and healing.
Healer Allan Chumak
First question
The first question that people ask themselves when faced with a person who calls himself a psychic or a healer, or a fortuneteller, or even someone whom others call an old man, is: is he not a charlatan in front of them? It seems that there is simply no clear answer to such questions. There will always be someone whom the “healer” helped, and someone on whom all the “healing installations” influenced exactly the same degree as an ancient heavy iron, one of those that was heated on the stove, could be affected by a bewitching spell. If we take Allan Chumak specifically, then, you know, you want to believe in the best. The fact is that, if he is not a natural healer, then at least he is not a conscious swindler. So what? After all, we often meet people who really believe that they are doing “miracles” invisible to others or are simply fantasizing, but not out of malice or selfish motives. True, some of Chumak’s statements may alarm skeptics.

Method of conducting sessions
During television sessions, he “charged” various substances with the help of passes: water, creams, ointments, etc., not only in the studio, but also the television viewers.
Unlike another famous television freak, Kashpirovsky, he did not utter a word during the sessions - he made passes and mumbled his lips.
He is brilliant in that he was able to saturate the airtime exclusively with his face: his programs consisted for the most part of Chumak’s torso and head sticking out from under the table, who in silence made some mysterious passes with his hands, reminiscent of sign language interpretation, thereby guaranteeing a cure for a whole range of diseases.
millions of hamsters put water in jars to the radio and listened to silence. It’s a pity there were no cell phones in the country back then, since Chumak also knew how to charge batteries.
Also, Chumak sold his photographs, which had to be applied to sore spots for healing. Naturally, the more photos were attached, the more healing the effect.
It must be said that Chumak was a very influential person, since his program was part of the “120 minutes” program (originally “90 minutes”) on Soviet television, which was shown at 7 am.
“Look, this is a “charged cream”, and this is an uncharged one. Try it and feel the difference." Of course, the creation of a psychological attitude predetermined the corresponding response, especially among suggestible people.
Medical requirements (evidence-based medicine) for organizing such tests are completely different from A. Chumak’s methodology. In fact, A. Chumak widely used the “armed suggestion” method, using the placebo effect.
Church affairs
It is well known that the church, and any church, does not welcome any “miracle workers.” But Chumak, according to him, had no problems with this, he is a baptized person and has a good attitude towards the church. At the same time, he clarified that he does not focus on any particular religion. “There is only one God,” he said. But one day he said that he was offered to somehow take the elder as a mentor. Some spiritual fathers suggested. Moreover, this was already, it seems, at a very mature age. Because Chumak, as he said then, did not understand why he needed a mentor at seventy-five years old. And he emphasized that he also did not need intermediaries, since he, as a baptized person, felt the Lord within himself. He claimed that he met with the highest hierarchs of the church and invited them to try to prove that his talent was from the devil and not from God, but they did not do this.

Childhood and youth
There is very little information about this period. It is known that Chumak did not show any signs of behavior in childhood. He was an ordinary, average child. This is what most sources say.
However, then contradictory reports began to appear that Alan’s unusual abilities arose in early adolescence. It was then that he began to teach his brother about Indian religion and culture.
Chumak is also credited with possessing some kind of super-knowledge, thanks to which he could answer an unexpected question about any historical person or event. Without any preparation, the future healer presented the facts in every detail, thereby striking the imagination of his interlocutors.
“My Gift was discovered at a fairly late age - at 42 years old. At that wonderful moment, I saw the surrounding reality in all the diversity of energy-informational interactions. I began to distinguish people's auras.
And then it was as if a waterfall had fallen on me. Streams of water fell from above and washed my body. I felt them with every cell. But in reality there was no water around.
There was only energy. Its most powerful flows nourished my body. Over time, the sensations weakened and were no longer so vivid. However, the energy did not decrease.
When I concentrated on my palms and passed an energy flow through them, they turned red, and the veins on my wrists bulged. Sometimes my blood pressure would jump up a lot, and nausea would set in—my body couldn’t cope with the force being poured into it.”
The future “magician” was born in Moscow in May 1935. Biography of Allan Chumak – white spots. Information about the family and parents is fragmentary and contradictory. Some sources say that the boy grew up as an ordinary child.
Like his peers, he was a moderate hooligan, played football in the yard, and skipped classes. He studied poorly; teachers called Allan a slob. Neither transfers from class to class, nor from one school to another helped: the guy did not take up his studies.
Other sources describe a miracle boy who surprised his relatives and peers with stories about the culture and religion of India, information about which he could not get either from newspapers or books, since there was no literature on this topic in the Chumaks’ house. In post-war Moscow, only a few knew about the Vedas and the wheel of Samsara.
Young Allan amazed adults with information taken from nowhere about the fates of celebrities, and told little-known events of history. But in the 1940s, the boy was perceived as an eccentric and a dreamer.
The truth is somewhere in the middle, but in high school Allan Chumak did not think about healing. After graduating from school, the guy entered the Institute of Physical Education. After receiving his diploma, he got a job as a cycling coach.
At the age of 29, the promising coach was forced to leave the sport. Before his dismissal, the commission entrusted Chumak to attend an international conference in the capital of Belarus, but when the commission members read Allan’s scientific work, they doubted his competence.
Allan Chumak did not give up and surprised his acquaintances: on the first attempt, the fired coach entered Moscow State University, one of the most prestigious faculties - journalism. After graduating from university, he got a job at the popular newspaper “Evening Moscow”. Then he moved to the reputable Trud and Moskovsky Komsomolets.
Biographers of Allan Chumak claim that the future “magician” became interested in extrasensory perception and other “miracle practices” while working for a newspaper. But in those years, the journalist looked at “healers” exclusively as charlatans and swindlers.

“Ill-wishers” all around
By the way, about how the young talented coach Chumak “left” the sport. It seems that, while going to some kind of international conference (presumably a specialized one), he presented in his scientific work certain facts that seemed dubious to a certain commission. And the trip to the conference did not take place. Remembering the subsequent “healing” career of Allan Vladimirovich, it is quite possible to imagine that the facts he presented could well have been doubted by people, let’s say, with more traditional views on... physical education. So, in essence, there is no one to blame here. By the way, Chumak himself also clearly “believed” in ill-wishers.

Extrasensory perception and healing
There is no information at what moment a turning point occurred in the journalist’s mind. But the young man, the deeper he delved into the essence of the phenomenon, the more he became fascinated by the “unexplored possibilities of the Universe.”
Suddenly, Allan Chumak discovered “wonderful abilities” and “certain energy” in himself. Confident in the amazing abilities sent down to him from above, Chumak comprehended the intricacies of extrasensory perception and healing.
Allan Chumak “charged” water through the TV screen
The healer first appeared on screens in 1989, as part of mass health sessions. Soon Allan Chumak's programs on central television became regular.
In a matter of months, the name of the psychic was recognized by a country of millions. During the “therapeutic sessions,” the city streets became empty. Trusting citizens sat down in front of blue screens, having prepared, as Chumak recommended, water, creams, ointments and candles.
According to the “healer,” substances displayed in front of televisions “absorbed” miraculous healing energy and cured ailments. They brought happiness to the healthy in their personal lives and “attracted” wealth and success in business. Millions believed.

People of the middle and older generations remember the “therapeutic monologues” of Allan Chumak and Anatoly Kashpirovsky on television in the late 1980s and early 1990s. “Healers”, after performing on central television channels, became stars, not inferior in fame to the prima donna of the Russian stage and members of the first-level government.
Scientists and luminaries of science vainly exposed the “phenomenon” of Allan Chumak, citizens believed in “healers”, just as children believe in fairies and the good Santa Claus.

Academician Eduard Pavlovich Kruglyakov explained to gullible citizens that Chumak’s method is pseudoscientific, there is no evidence of the healing effect of psychic sessions.
Thousands of scientists agreed with him, pointing to the placebo effect. But Allan Chumak convinced fans that he received a gift “from above”; he received information from “voices” that sounded in his head.
The psychic's performances stopped after the Russian Ministry of Health adopted a number of regulations limiting unconventional methods of treatment. Allan Chumak disappeared from television and appeared as part of “live” sessions, at stadiums and on the stages of cultural centers.

Three books by the legendary “magician” were published from 2007 to 2009. In them, Allan Chumak revealed the secrets of healing practices, gave advice, and talked about the “voices” that taught how to use the gift sent down.
With the advent of computers and the Internet in the lives of citizens, Allan Chumak returned to activity, but without his former popularity. He launched an official website where he posted video sessions.
The healer claimed that regular viewing of the video for 7 months would cure any disease and improve the health of the body. Videos where Allan Chumak “treats” the musculoskeletal system, gastrointestinal tract, liver and alcoholism have become the most viewed.

In 2008, viewers saw Allan Chumak again: he appeared in the Ukrainian TV show “Battle of Psychics” as the chairman of the jury. Chumak lasted one season on air, losing to his Israeli colleague Uri Geller.
Allan Chumak also tested his strength as a politician. In 2000, the former “magician” ran for the Russian Duma from the Samara region, but no trace of his former popularity remained: Chumak received 3% of the votes.

Alan Chumak - biography, photo, personal life, wife, children, cause of death
Allan Chumak started a family twice. From his first attempt he left behind a daughter, Elena, born in 1967.
The psychic’s second marriage turned out to be successful: Allan Vladimirovich lived with his wife Lyudmila for forty years. In 1984, the couple had a son, Dmitry Chumak.
Alan Chumak is a man of mystery, a man of legend. Some call him a charlatan, while others consider him a real wizard.
One way or another, Alan Chumak was the first person to reveal to the unenlightened Soviet public the true miracles of extrasensory perception and healing.
In the mid-80s, his name was known to everyone
Soviet Union, but at some point the recognized master suddenly simply went into the shadows. So who is he – Alan Chumak? We will try to find the answer to this exciting question today.
Information about Alan Chumak’s childhood and adolescence is quite fragmentary and contradictory. As some say, he grew up as an ordinary child, not even thinking about anything that went beyond the boundaries of the traditional idea of the world around us.
However, at a certain period of time, completely opposite reports began to appear in the media, telling that the young guy’s supernatural abilities began to manifest themselves in early childhood.
According to the same data, “with knowledge of facts that he could not possibly know,” Alan Chumak amazed people even after. Thus, in particular, he could accurately talk about certain historical events without any preparation.
One way or another, such facts were not perceived in the 40s as some kind of miracles, but were often taken for the most common eccentricities. Alan Chumak grew up as an ordinary child and did not even think about healing and extrasensory perception.
At school he studied rather poorly, and therefore was always known as a slacker and a slob. He was transferred from one class to another, from one school to another... The only hobby of his childhood was sports.
And therefore, having somehow graduated from school, Alan Chumak, without hesitation, submitted documents to the prestigious Moscow Institute of Physical Education. Here he received the necessary education and began working as a cycling coach. In this field, he achieved some success.
Thus, already at the age of 29, the promising coach was forced to leave the sport. Trying to find a new path in life, Alan went to Moscow State University and, to the surprise of many, successfully passed the most difficult exams at the Faculty of Journalism.
However, this was just the beginning. Easily and almost playfully, a few years later, Chumak reached new heights and went to work for the popular newspaper “Evening Moscow”.
It was here, during his journalistic career, that he first became interested in issues of extrasensory perception. But Chumak perceived future “colleagues” exclusively as charlatans.
However, the more Alan delved into this topic, the more clearly he understood the limitless possibilities of the universe. At some point, he began to discover wonderful abilities in himself.
In a short time, Alan Chumak became known throughout the Soviet Union.
During his speeches and television programs, the city streets were literally empty, because no one wanted to miss the coveted session. People stocked up on water, candles, ointments, creams and other substances that could “absorb” and “charge” with the energy of a recognized master.
In the late 80s and early 90s, Alan Vladimirovich became one of the most popular people in the USSR. Critics and researchers began to pay more attention to the “Chumak phenomenon”, putting forward one after another a variety of versions. So, academician E.
Kruglyakov called the psychic’s method pseudoscientific, emphasizing that at present there is not a single real confirmation of the healing effect of such sessions.
After this, the psychic began performing as part of “live” sessions, but soon curtailed this activity.
Between 2007 and 2009, three books by the healer were published, in which he spoke in detail about the features of various healing practices.
Magician, enlightened one, magician, charlatan, deceiver - they called Alan Chumak as many names as possible. This personality, as many “children of the nineties” may remember, is quite influential.
This man easily managed to touch many hearts and minds of the Soviet public. Let us remember that it first became known during the Soviet Union.
Some time later, he also suddenly disappeared, and also unexpectedly appeared again, many years later. What exactly is Alan Chumak and what goals did he pursue in his life, and what was his life in essence?
Since this man was a famous person, many fans wanted to know his height, weight, and age, among other things. Years of life of Alan Chumak – 1935-2017.
And during this time he did a lot, earning not only all-Union fame, but also the sincere love of many people.
Although, looking at photos of Alan Chumak in his youth and now, one can hardly say that this young and unremarkable guy will become a real celebrity in the future.
On May 26, 1935, the future healer Alan Chumak was born in Moscow. This non-standard name was given to him by his father, Vladimir Chumak, who worked as a translator. What his mother did remains unknown.
Among the family there was often talk that the boy had certain abilities. He was an inquisitive child, but this did not affect his school studies one bit.
Chumak's first profession was coaching (cycling). This became his favorite business, which he soon abandoned due to squabbles with management. Having then received the profession of a reporter at Moscow State University, he also became interested in extrasensory perception.
The biography and personal life of Alan Chumak still raise many questions. Some still call him a healer, while others call him a charlatan. And although he died almost a year ago, the causes of Chumak’s death still remain completely unknown. The grave of the famous psychic is located at the Troyekurov cemetery.
No less popular than the biography of the famous healer is the topic of the family and children of Alan Chumak. And this is not surprising, because many were interested in knowing at least something about the family life of one of the main idols of the Soviet era.
Despite the fact that he had supernatural skills, he was not able to find true love right away, since he married twice in his entire life. He also has two children - a daughter from his first wife and a son from his second.
There is a 17 year difference between them. But it is worth noting that it was with his last wife that Chumak spent 40 whole years, which, undoubtedly, were truly filled with happiness.
It is impossible not to notice that, although the Soviet healer himself was widely known throughout the Union, not much is actually known about his children. The son of Alan Chumak, Dmitry Chumak, was born in 1984, when Alan was married for the second time.
High-profile news about the healer’s son appeared only once - when in 2011 he was kidnapped in order to receive a ransom. The kidnapper, as it turned out, was one of the FSB officers.
As for the daughter of this man, there is practically no information about this woman. The daughter of Alan Chumak, Elena Chumak, is the first-born of the Soviet healer; she appeared in 1967.
On the Internet you can see several photos of her together with the famous dad. And it is worth noting that Elena is almost a copy of her father. Perhaps that's all.
She is currently 50 years old. It is quite possible that she has long had her own family, children and maybe even grandchildren. But ordinary people are not allowed to know about this.
Who the ex-wife of Alan Chumak really is is not known for certain. Their marriage was short-lived, and the divorce took place a long time ago. And there is no information about this marriage, except, perhaps, that the healer’s first child, daughter Elena, was born in this marriage.
Treatment sessions
Alan Chumak, whose biography is eventful, worked every day to improve his healing abilities. He began to see patients. Over time, the man completely abandoned journalistic activities.
In 1989, Alan Chumak, whose therapeutic sessions were becoming increasingly popular, was invited to appear on television. It was precisely during this period of breaking stereotypes that society thirsted for new ideas, formats, programs and faces. The healer instantly became a national celebrity.
Alan Chumak, whose healing sessions are still remembered, charged water from a distance, performed magical manipulations with his hands, gave information for application to candles, etc. Everything was done for only one thing - to restore health to TV viewers.
Soon the series of programs with the psychic ended, and letters to the editor of the channel continued to arrive in an endless stream. In his book, Chumak wrote that their number exceeded 6 million.
People wanted repeat sessions, thanked, criticized, and asked for a personal meeting. Such success required the continuation of the healer’s activities, but the Ministry of Health thought differently.
