Larisa Malevannaya in her youth
My father was a heavy drinker, drinking away even the little money that appeared in the house. Mom, tired of carrying the whole family on her shoulders and fighting her husband’s vice, died at 43.

For Larisa Malevannaya, in this gray and difficult life there was one bright “window” - cinema. When she admitted that she would like to become an artist, her relatives and friends reacted ambiguously: some with surprise, and some with laughter.

Theater

After graduating from the directing department of LGITMiK, Larisa Malevannaya received an offer to serve at the V.F. Komissarzhevskaya Theater. However, she rejected this offer and left for Krasnoyarsk, where her husband Gennady Oporkov decided to go. After 4 years they returned to Leningrad.

The city on the Neva greeted them hospitably. Gennady Oporkov was offered the position of chief director at the Lenin Komsomol Theater, and Larisa Ivanovna received an offer from Georgy Tovstonogov himself. And again the actress followed her husband.

A little time passed, and Larisa Ivanovna finally moved to the BDT. She was unable to refuse Tovstonogov’s repeated proposal (and this, they say, is an unprecedented case for Georgy Alexandrovich).

Larisa Malevannaya came to Bolshoi as a mature actress. Her baggage included leading roles played at Lenkom in the productions “Passenger” and “Don’t Part With Your Loved Ones” and several awards, including 2 WTO awards for the best work of the season.

Movies

In the first film, the melodrama “On the Wedding Day” by Vadim Mikhailov, Malevannaya played the main character, a strong-willed woman who is trying to arrange her personal life. Interestingly, not all scenes made it into the final film. At the insistence of the artistic council, footage was cut out in which the bride, abandoned on her wedding day, breaks bottles from the festive table in despair.

In 1970, the actress brought to life the image of the revolutionary Commissar Maria in the film “Call the Hurricane Maria.” A tall, slender woman (Larissa’s height is 173 cm) managed to organically fit into the image depicted.

The 1970s–1980s became stellar years for the actress. Larisa Malevannaya played poignant, complex, multifaceted characters in the films “Allow Takeoff!”, “Behind the Clouds is the Sky,” “There, Beyond the Horizon” and “The Only One.” Larisa Malevannaya’s heroines Vera Ivanovna in the film “Late Dates” and Sofya Andreevna in “Teenager” still serve as a standard of excellence for current students of theater universities.

The projects that brought Larisa Malevanna real fame are the films of Pyotr Todorovsky. The intelligent teacher Alla Sergeevna, Tanya’s mother in “Intergirl” and the tragic role of the abandoned general’s wife in the film “Anchor, more Anchor!” - this is real gold in the actress’s creative baggage.

Critics and viewers call Malevanna’s roles in the TV series “Black Raven” and “Idiot” talented and impeccably played. These films were released at the beginning of the new century. After filming the black comedy “Decent People” and the crime melodrama “Our Happy Tomorrow,” Malevannaya began working on a new project, the melodrama “Personal Space,” where she appeared as the mother of the main character, Professor Koloskov (Yuri Baturin).

For Larisa Malevannaya, in this gray and difficult life there was one bright “window”: cinema. She looked at the flickering screen, with a frozen heart, watching the lives of the heroines and imagining herself in their place. When she admitted that she would like to become an artist, her relatives and friends reacted ambiguously: some with surprise, and some with laughter. In addition to poverty and provincial origin, there was another obstacle to the goal. Larisa Malevannaya, whose surname, if translated from Ukrainian, hinted at a “written beauty,” was not considered a beauty. In any case, her friends, and even her own grandmother, constantly told her about this. Larisa was not offended, because she thought so herself. But she was sure that cinema needed all kinds of artists, including ugly ones. At the Bolshoi Drama Theater, Malevanna was immediately entrusted with the main role, and then she was one of the favorite actresses of director Georgy Tovstonogov, who trusted her with the most important roles.

In this theater, the actress had the opportunity to work together with such outstanding artists as Kirill Lavrov, Evgeny Lebedev, Oleg Borisov, who greatly helped her get used to her new place of work. She starred in common films with Borisov more than once and played in the same performances.

The year eighty-eight became significant in the creative biography of Larisa Malevanna, when she was the director of the theater that she created together with her students, and Larisa Ivanovna held this position for five years. These years were some of the most difficult in Malevanna’s career, and today Larisa Ivanovna calls the idea of creating a theater her big mistake.

Nevertheless, thanks to this, in the difficult nineties, the theater helped many young artists, who then found it difficult to find work, survive.

After leaving the Bolshoi in 2007, where the actress had been little involved in recent years, Vyacheslav Pinchuk, with whom she studied at the pedagogical institute, invited her to work at the Krasnodar Youth Theater. Malevannaya staged several performances in this theater, and she had the best memories of working there.

After working in that theater for three years, she returned to St. Petersburg again.

Larisa Malevannaya now

The actress, as in her youth, remains in the ranks and annually appears in projects that are interesting to her. In 2019, Larisa Malevannaya appeared in the international drama “See You Soon,” where she played a minor character. The film was about a football player from the USA who, having received a serious injury, decided to retire from the sport. While traveling around the world, he met a girl from St. Petersburg, whose meeting changed his whole life.
