Separation from her only son, lack of major roles: the tragedy of Tatyana Samoilova, who drank herself to death alone

Childhood and youth

Tatyana Evgenievna Samoilova was born in May 1934 in Leningrad, into an intelligent family. Her mother Zinaida Levina worked as an engineer. And my dad, the wonderful Soviet actor Evgeny Samoilov, served in the theater. But 3 years after the birth of their daughter, the family moved to the capital.

Tatyana Samoilova in her youth
Tatyana Samoilova grew up behind the scenes. Since childhood, she has been “saturated” with the theatrical atmosphere. Even then she knew for sure that she would be nothing other than an artist. Although the girl had every chance of becoming a wonderful ballerina. She successfully graduated from the ballet school, and Maya Plisetskaya herself invited young Samoilova to continue studying at the ballet school at the Bolshoi Theater. But Tatyana was focused only on acting.

Movies

In 1953, Samoilova was accepted into the Shchukin Theater. And after 2 years she made her debut on the screen. Tatyana Evgenievna played Masha in the film “The Mexican,” based on the story of the same name by Jack London.

The star role – Veronica in the melodrama “The Cranes Are Flying” – went to the young actress immediately after graduating from university. Probably, except for Tatyana Samoilova, there is not a single domestic actress who would be so incredibly lucky - to turn into a legend after almost the first role she played. The film by Mikhail Kalatozov not only entered the golden fund of Russian cinema, it is still rightfully considered the best film about the war.

Few people know that this role was very difficult for Tatyana Evgenievna. During filming, she fell ill with tuberculosis. Choking, holding on to injections, she still went to the set for almost six months, almost seven days a week. I had to work from early morning until midnight.

Still from the film “Anna Karenina” Posted by Culture.RF on Saturday, July 1, 2017

Tatyana Samoilova as Anna Karenina
The success of the film was deafening. Although at the very top she was criticized to smithereens. The heroine Samoilova, who cheated on her beloved, who had gone to the front, with his friend, was rejected by Soviet morality. They began to criticize the film especially zealously after it was “branded” by Nikita Khrushchev.

But a year after its release, The Cranes Are Flying became a hit at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1958, the film received the Palme d'Or, and Tatyana Samoilova received the Orange Tree Award and a diploma for Best Actress.

Cannes shocked the young actress. But unprecedented luxury and unprecedented attention did not unsettle Samoilova. She got used to it quite quickly and communicated with her colleagues on equal terms.

After the phenomenal success of the film, an unexpected calm came for Tatyana Evgenievna. For 4 years, she starred in only two films. But they did not forget about her abroad. In 1961, the actress was invited to play a role in the film “Alba Regia,” which was directed by Romanian director Mihai Semes. She played a scout.

Then again a break until 1964. And again Samoilova was remembered in the West. Giuseppe de Santis, the famous Italian director, invited the Soviet actress to star, although not in the lead, but in a very striking role in the war drama “They Went East.” The heroine of Samoilova in some ways even eclipsed Sophia Loren, who got the central image.

For this work, the actress, whose performance was recognized as brilliant in the West, received a substantial fee. She came home in an Opel and with an excellent wardrobe, which makes the attitude towards her seem to have deteriorated even more. They envied her, they gossiped about her, and she was disliked by cultural officials.

And only in 1967 Tatyana Samoilova again got the star role. Her Anna Karenina is brilliant. The drama, directed by Alexander Zarkhi, was a huge success, perhaps not inferior to the success of “War and Peace” by Sergei Bondarchuk.

Tatyana Samoilova in old age
After Anna Karenina, the actress expected a flurry of offers from directors. But alas. Years of oblivion lay ahead. Samoilova was only occasionally invited to small roles. Perhaps Tatyana Samoilova’s creative biography would have turned out completely differently if the artist had agreed to the proposals of Hollywood directors.

The actress disappeared from the screens somewhere in the mid-1970s. Only in the late 1990s did she appear in the film “24 Hours”. Four years later she appeared in episodes of “The Moscow Saga” and “Saint Germain”. The last film with Samoilova’s participation, Nirvana, was released in 2008. In the youth drama, Tatyana Evgenievna got a small role.

There were various rumors about the legendary artist. We talked about alcoholism, mental illness, bulimia. But close people who knew Tatyana Samoilova well called her main “illness” - severe loneliness.

Underground abortion, oblivion, fear: the tragic fate of Lanovoy’s first wife

People's Artist of the Russian Federation Tatyana Samoilova was called “the most modest and charming actress.” She has received many awards. She was appreciated abroad and desperately called to star in the best films. The gentle brown-haired girl had everything to become a legend of the film industry. But her fate decreed otherwise: loneliness, pain, loss of children, separation from her loved one and complete oblivion - only a small part of what she had to endure.

“Whatever you say, I am a happy person,” Samoilova insisted despite everything.

Childhood and youth

It was not without reason that little Tanya’s love for art arose. Her father is the famous actor Evgeny Samoilov. Three years after the girl was born, in 1937, her parents decided to move from Leningrad (now St. Petersburg - Ed.) to the capital, where there are more opportunities. The head of the family immediately got a job at the Meyerhold Theater, and sent the little girl to a ballet school.

Tanya was making great progress - Maya Plisetskaya herself predicted a great future for her. But the girl wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps. In 1953, after graduating from school, Samoilova entered the Shchukin School without outside help, where she met her future husband. People's Artist of the USSR Vasily Lanov.

"Who are you?" — a charmed classmate approached Tatyana.

“I am the daughter of my father and mother,” the girl answered.

That’s how this romance began, reminds KP.RU.

ITAR-TASS

First love and abortion

According to the memoirs of the actress herself, during her student years she was not separated from Lanov for a second. The stars prepared for exams together, went to the movies, hugged constantly and never argued. Everyone was jealous of this relationship. Without thinking twice, Vasily called the gentle beauty down the aisle. She agreed.

Lanovoy and Samoilova got married in the summer of 1955. Soon the star became pregnant with twins, which made her husband incredibly happy. But the happiness was short-lived: doctors forbade the actress to give birth due to serious health problems. I had to go for an abortion.

As Anna Yaroshevskaya writes in “Great People of the Epoch,” Vasily personally accompanied Tatyana to the procedure. In those days, abortions were not approved, and therefore everything had to be done in secrecy and even without anesthesia. No one knew about what happened except the rector of the school.

“Vasya, how can this be? Why didn’t you use protection?!” - he scolded Lanovoy.

“I didn’t think about it, I loved Tanya,” the actor admitted bitterly.

After the tragedy, the relationship between Vasily and Tatiana came to naught. They would still play together in Anna Karenina, but after the divorce in 1957 they would become strangers to each other.

No one wants

Still from the film “The Cranes Are Flying” (1957)

Tatyana made her debut in the film “The Mexican” directed by Vladimir Kaplunovsky in the 50s. After the end of “Pike”, another famous director, Mikhail Kalatozov, entrusted her with the main role in the film “The Cranes Are Flying” and would not go wrong: he would subsequently receive the “Palme d’Or” for his work, and his ward the “Orange Tree” for her brilliant performance in the role of Veronica , who did not wait for her beloved from the front.

The premiere of “Cranes” took place in 1957, since then Samoilova had to wait ten long years before they remembered her and invited her to “Anna Karenina.” All this time, Tatyana was moving from project to project in the theater. They, unfortunately, were not very successful.

“Karenina,” which was loved by Soviet and Western audiences, did not help advance her career either. After the 70s, Samoilova completely disappeared from the screens. They remembered her again only in 1999: producer Alexander Atanesyan offered her a role in the film “Twenty Four”. However, there were no more high-profile projects with Tatyana’s participation.

It was rumored that Lanovoy’s first wife had every chance of becoming a star abroad. But during the Soviet era, it was simply impossible to leave, reminds Dni.ru.

Dear Dima

Oddly enough, despite the doctors’ prohibitions, after a few years Samoilova managed to experience the joy of motherhood. In her marriage to theater administrator Eduard Mashkovich, she gave birth to an heir, Dmitry. Today the man lives in the USA. He is a doctor by profession and has a large family.

The famous actress spent her last years completely alone. On May 4, 2014, on the day of her own anniversary, Tatyana Samoilova was admitted to the hospital. There were no signs of trouble, just a slight malaise. Soon after hospitalization, the star died. She was 80 years old.

Earlier, 5-tv.ru told what happened to the most passionate fan of Vasily Lanovoy.

Personal life

Tatyana Samoilova's first husband was Vasily Lanovoy. The actors got married when they were still students. The wedding took place during the period when Tatyana Evgenievna was filming “The Mexican,” her first film.

You could say that work separated them. Lanovoy was constantly busy filming. After six years of this “romance on legs,” as Samoilova called it, the couple broke up. The last straw in their relationship was a clandestine abortion. Tatyana was then at the peak of her popularity and dreamed of acting. And although my husband objected to the abortion, he was never there. And the actress’s health did not allow her to give birth, no matter how much her husband opposed it.

Samoilova experienced this failed marriage very painfully. For a long time she rejected the offers of numerous fans who did not give her a pass.

One of the most beautiful couples of the 20th century.

Tatyana Samoilova and Vasily Lanovoy in the film “Anna Karenina”
Tatyana Samoilova’s personal life changed in 1958. She married the writer Valery Osipov. In Paris, where the premiere of the Soviet-French film “Louis Garros is looking for a friend” took place, Samoilova arrived together with Osipov. Later, the actress admitted that this was her greatest love. The husband idolized his beautiful wife, bombarding her with telegrams with declarations of love during the days of separation. But after 10 years this marriage ended. Samoilova was 33 years old, and she dreamed of a child, but could not give birth to one from Osipov.

Despite the great love, in the last years of the second marriage, each of the spouses lived their own lives. From 1964 to 1967, Samoilova had a relationship with the writer, journalist, screenwriter and film director Solomon Shulman.

I managed to make my dream come true with my third husband, director Eduard Moshkovich. To this union the only son, Dmitry, was born. But when he was 2 years old, the marriage collapsed. Moshkovich, according to Samoilova, had a consumerist attitude towards her. He wanted his wife to run the household and provide for the family. But there was no love. When Dmitry grew up, he trained as a doctor and immigrated to the United States. He started a family there and stayed to live.

The story of first love: Vasily Lanovoi and Tatyana Samoilova

The story of first love: Vasily Lanovoi and Tatyana Samoilova
At one time they were considered one of the most beautiful couples of Soviet cinema. Their love was so strong that it was physically felt by those who were nearby. Their happiness was supposed to be eternal, but, unfortunately, it turned out to be short-lived.

They met at the Shchukin Theater School, where they both studied acting. Vasily Lanovoy at that time was known as a star - a handsome man who had already played the main role in the film "Certificate of Maturity." Many girls sought Lanovoy’s attention and love. But he turned his attention specifically to Tatyana.

“I remember he came up to me and asked: “Whose are you?” I answered: “Mom’s, dad’s.” He: “Last name?” I say: “Samoilova.” “Are you Samoilov’s daughter?” I say yes". He: “Let’s get acquainted, my name is Lanovoy.” He made a slightly strange impression on me: a kind of insidious, handsome face, an exhausted appearance. I fell in love with him. He became my first love and first man. And I was his first, as he said. And it was wonderful, it is impossible to forget! - Tatyana recalled.

Their romance developed rapidly and violently, as youth and first love allow. Walks under the moon, romantic surprises, poems of my own composition - it was all there. They attended lectures together and prepared for tests. One day, Tatyana, who was in poor health, was admitted to the Herzen sanatorium and was operated on for a small tuberculoma in her lung. Vasily came running to her every day, bringing strawberries from the garden. And one day he said: “I want you to be my wife!” Samoilova smiled: “What a marriage, we’re learning!” But Lanovoy did not back down and soon proposed to Tatyana again. The young couple's wedding was very modest. Many years later, Tatyana shared her memories:

- It was an obsession. We signed it funny like that. We met near the Botkin hospital and gave our passports to the registry office for registration. Then Lanovoy bought me some kind of T-shirt, I bought him some underpants, and we went home. We were simply incredibly happy.

The young people began to live with Tatyana’s parents, because... Vasily’s apartment was too crowded. Tatyana's parents gave them a small room, but Tatyana and Vasily seemed to be at the height of happiness and did not notice the inconvenience.

— Lanovoy had a very small apartment, in which, in addition to his parents, there lived two more sisters and a niece. And at that time I lived completely unaccountably and carefree, under the wing of my parents. They fed Vasya and me, gave us water and clothed us. Tatyana Samoilova later recalled.

Soon Tatyana became pregnant. But she never became a mother - she had an abortion. According to one version, the doctor was not sure that with her poor health (Samoilova is a child of war), she would be able to safely bear and give birth to children; the actress was afraid to take risks and went for an abortion. There is another, more plausible, as many believe, version. Tatyana had an abortion because she simply was not ready for children. Her career was on the rise, but since childhood she dreamed of becoming an actress and achieving success in acting. Tatiana literally grew up behind the scenes, because... her father, Evgeny Samoilov, was a famous actor.

— From the very beginning I had this attitude in life: “Cinema is the main thing!” Perhaps I got this from my father - since childhood, I was accustomed to the fact that everyone in our house obeyed the rhythm of his work in cinema and theater. — Tatyana once admitted.

Moreover, she had an abortion in secret from Vasily, telling him about it a little later. After this, the relationship between them began to deteriorate. Later, Tatyana realized that she had made a mistake by deciding to have an abortion.

— The doctor showed them to me, my children. They were boys. Twins. I don’t know why she did this, probably so that I would fully understand my mistake. And I understood. I sobbed uncontrollably for several hours straight. But nothing could be fixed. Tiny babies stood before my eyes and my heart sank very painfully. I still remember that dark day. - Tatyana said.

Meanwhile, life went on. Tatyana's career took off. She starred in the legendary film “The Cranes Are Flying” together with Alexei Batalov. The film was recognized at Cannes. Members of the jury and viewers praised the film. When the credits rolled, there was a thunderous ovation that did not stop for a very long time.

— Once I was asked to read Viktor Rozov’s play “Forever Living” (the film “The Cranes Are Flying” was based on it). Director Mikhail Kalatozov and cameraman Sergei Urusevsky were looking for young actors to play the main roles. They didn’t really like the candidacy of Elena Dobronravova, which the screenwriter insisted on - fortunately for me. After all, I really wanted to play Veronica! This was absolutely my role, my theme. I was lucky - at the auditions Alexey Batalov and I “matched” and looked good together. After all, just a couple was needed! Urusevsky also liked my lightness and grace. I spent my entire childhood at the ballet barre . - said Tatyana Samoilova.

Vasily Lanovoy’s career was also gaining momentum. Directors vied with each other to invite him to work in one film or another. Work, career, success - they were swirling around like a whirlwind. The couple hardly saw each other, meeting at home only in the late evenings.

But their marriage began to crumble before our eyes. First, abortion left wounds on the heart. Secondly, they began to miss each other's attention. Vasily wanted Tatyana to devote more time to home and housekeeping, but she flatly refused to sit at home. The couple often quarreled. During the next showdown, Tatyana suggested breaking up.

“We both cried when we parted, but I thought it would be better for both of us.”.

- said Tatyana.

In 1958, Vasily Lanovoy and Tatyana Samoilova divorced.

Years later they met again, on the set of the film Anna Karenina, where they played the main roles. Work on this painting lasted 4 years. And although at that time they both had already found their happiness with other people, they still enjoyed filming together.

– It was easy for us to play Anna and Vronsky, because at one time we experienced a lot together... The past even helped - it was easier for me to understand the relationship between Lev Nikolaevich’s characters through the prism of our fate. Anna Karenina has an advantage - she knew how to love brilliantly, and Vronsky was an ordinary lover: handsome, but rather cool, analyzing everything in the world. Nevertheless, it was precisely the collision of the talent of love, which Anna is endowed with, with Vronsky, who is ordinary in this regard, that struck the necessary spark between them, and what Tatyana and I experienced in reality gave this situation a piquancy. While filming the film, Alexander Zarkhi analyzed the background of each scene well and in detail. - said Vasily Lanovoy.

– I adore Anna Karenina. If I hadn't played her, I wouldn't be me. Vasya and I worked on the film for four years; for 2 years we sat at the dacha of Alexander Zarkhi, the film’s director, in Peredelkino, writing the script. Alexander Zarkhi was an old but brilliant man, and I was happy that I knew him, simply happy. And I was happy that Vasya Lanovoy was my partner. - Tatyana admitted.

Later, in an interview, the actress admitted that she regretted that she and Vasily had once broken up.

“He was my greatest love.” The first feeling, the first kisses... We were incredibly happy together. I regret that we broke up, I also regret that I had an abortion when I had twins from Vasily Semenovich. Now I understand that if I had given birth then, I would be better now, and Vasily and I would be together.
