The creative nature of our hero began to take shape almost from birth. In many ways, he adopted the best from his parents, who were fond of science fiction and fantasy. Few people know, but the future actor was named after the character of the fairy-tale adventure “The Lord of the Rings”. The guy literally grew up in the atmosphere of a fairy tale and tried on new roles every day. Soon the world saw a new and talented artist.

With the advent of popularity, he gained a whole army of fans around the world who closely monitor his personal life. What does Heughan hide behind the cameras and the big stage? Is his heart free for romantic relationships? To answer all these questions, we will try to get to know the artist better and go to a small village in Scotland, at a time when our hero was a simple boy.

Sam Heughan biography

In 1980, on April 30, the future star was born. Sam was born into a full-fledged family in a small village with the difficult name of Balmaclellan within Scotland.

As for the parents, they led a rather interesting lifestyle. Mom and Dad, Christine and David, were hippies and fans of the fantasy world of John Tolkien. They were members of a small community called Gandalf's Gardens. The love for the works of the great science fiction writer also spilled over into the relationships between parents and children. Sam was not the only child, his older brother was named Cirdan in honor of the elf, and our hero was also nicknamed like the character in the Lord of the Rings trilogy - the hobbit who helped Frodo destroy the ring of power in the fire of Mount Doom.

The very surrounding atmosphere and setting created the feeling of a fairy tale, because a happy family lived in a small village with only a few hundred people. Nothing interesting was happening around, a simple and measured life, except for the fact that the wreckage of ancient castles lay everywhere. It is interesting that the house in which they lived was previously a stable at the castle.

This is how the life of the future actor began in a fairy tale; unfortunately, this fairy tale did not have a happy ending. When Sam was three years old, his parents decided to finally divorce. As a result, he stayed with his older brother and mother. At that moment, our hero did not understand where his father had gone and when he would return. For many years, fate did not bring him together with his dad.

The mother tried to raise her two sons on her own, and spent time at work from morning to night to feed the family. She worked as a teacher, worked part-time as a shoemaker, and even tried to open her own business, but this did not bring success. Soon after this, Christy decides to try her hand at another place and they move the whole family to the village of New Galloway, which was even smaller than their previous place of residence. Nevertheless, the family stayed here for a long time.

The time has come to get an education, the future actor enters a local school, first grade, where he had only a couple of classmates. Despite this, Sam found many friends the same age and older. For a young boy it was an ideal place, surrounded by nature - fields, forests, rivers. He and his friends spent whole days on the street. A mandatory attribute of his walk was a wooden sword, which he carried with him everywhere and imagined himself as a historical character or the hero of a fairy tale. Even then, Heughan began to show his acting skills and delighted his friends, brother and mother.

Sam Heughan in his youth

While studying at school, he showed himself to be an exemplary student and tried to absorb as much knowledge as possible. His favorite subject was history, which he projected onto himself. The guy liked to imagine himself as King Arthur and in his free time he liked to explore the ruins of ancient castles and buildings. Along with his historical hobbies, our hero practiced musical instruments. During his childhood he managed to master the trumpet and trombone.

Later, the family moves again to a new address. This time they moved to Edinburgh, where our hero receives a full secondary education. At the same time, my mother also decided to study as an artist at the art academy. As a result, she began to paint, and her paintings repeatedly appeared at exhibitions.

Sam Heughan in his youth

After completing school, our hero decides to go on a trip to see the world and work. His route included almost all European countries and American states. After returning home, he submits documents to the Royal Academy of Arts in Glasgow, where he is enrolled in a course without any problems. From this moment his path to fame along the alley of acting begins. Here he receives his first and most important lessons in acting and goes on the big theater stage for the first time.

As for his father, he is no longer alive, but before his death the brothers managed to visit him for the first time in a long period of time. Despite the accumulated negativity and resentment, they parted on cordial terms and did not quarrel.

Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan on the Outlander Season 3 finale

12/13/2017 THR's Sydney Bucksbaum spoke with Katrina and Sam about the big Season 4 reboot and what we can expect from it.

WARNING – THERE MAY BE SPOILERS!

Season 3 of Outlander ended the other day, leaving Claire ( Caitriona Balfe ) and Jamie ( Sam Heughan ) stranded on the shores of a new continent and viewers at the peak of tension. The heroes face incredible trials and endless threats to their lives. Either Jamie could have been executed, or Claire almost died. But now they are both safe - and in the new season they will have to face the worst thing: an ordinary quiet life.

THR spoke with Katrina and Sam about the big Season 4 reboot and what we can expect from it.

After spending half the season apart, how important is that scene together on the beach in the finale?

Sam Heughan: We love her. It’s great to end the season like this. Our heroes went through a lot and both were left with nothing. And this flight of drones with cameras over the shore shows us the beginning of a new life and a new world.

Caitriona Balfe: They're finally in America. This is that beautiful note, full of hope, that everyone needed and on which everything can end.

Where did you film this scene?

Balfe: Not in America. Actually it was South Africa, we filmed there in June.

Heughan: We are very used to this location, there are absolutely amazing beaches. The filming was on a protected side and there were dolphins playing in the ocean next to us. It was something incredible. There are no dolphins in Scotland - certainly not where we filmed. Everyone will be happy with the dolphins in the fourth season.

Season three ended with Jamie and Claire reuniting and realizing they were in America. How will this affect season four?

Balfe: One of the great things about the season is that we see this couple as true trailblazers. This is the birth of the modern American nation. They come to North Carolina, try to make a life there, and come into contact with the Indians. So it's a great look at America 300 years ago.

Heughan: They are to some extent outsiders, foreigners. We will talk about immigrants from different aspects of life and times, who brought with them everything they had - they came not only themselves, but took the whole family and tried to build a new life. After all, that's what Claire and Jamie have been trying to do all along - build a life together.

What does it mean for each of you to show different facets of the immigrant life?

Balfe: It's interesting because I left Ireland at 18 and came to America at 21. And now I will have to look from the historical side at the country that has been my home for 13 years. Not to say that I don’t know much about American history, but it’s especially interesting now to see how a nation of immigrants was created and learn some lessons from it.

Heughan: For Jamie and me, the similarities between the Highlanders and the Indians are incredible. Today they are respected because each of the peoples has gone through its own trials and tribulations. There are so many similarities between these warrior cultures, the great spirituality and connection to the land.

How many books from the Diana Gabaldon series have you read?

Balfe: We both read the fourth book, which is what season four will be based on. We really wanted to do it, and we read it before filming. This helps a lot as a diagram. Diana's books are very rich, they contain a lot of information that goes beyond the season, which is not always helpful to us.

So you haven't read Diana's new book, Tell the Bees I'm Gone?

Balfe: (laughs) No! Sam, did you read?

Heughan: Not her next book. Diana is an excellent guide for us. We ask her questions and have long conversations. Sometimes we don’t hear anything from her for quite a long time, and then she begins to communicate very actively. We don't always follow the books - we try our best to keep Diana and the fans happy, we try to collaborate to stay as close to the book as possible during filming.

Each season, Outlander changes locations and narrative. How will America be affected by season four?

Heughan: Don't other shows do that?! Ours is like the latest road movie. We travel everywhere. We all yearn for what it was like in the beginning, but what's cool about America is that there's an element of every season we've had before. There are elements of France in the clothes and manners, Scotland in the makeup and all these immigrants. There's a little bit of everything. People took everything with them - and all their experiences made them who they are now.

Balfe: Although we are not filming in America itself, she is one of our main characters. The Indian tribes that Claire and Jamie begin to interact with form a close bond with their neighbors. This is a very interesting element of the season, it will be great to see how everyone lives close together and has incredible respect for each other.

The fourth season is currently in production. Have you heard anything about how long the hiatus will last before the premiere?

Heughan: I don't think audiences will have to hold their breath as long as they did for season three.

Balfe: Last time the wait was longer than usual. As far as I know, we tried to maintain the same shooting schedule as last year. I can’t say whether this means that we will go on the same broadcast schedule - but I hope that we will be close to this.

There are a lot of provocative moves in Outlander; the series has repeatedly depicted sexual violence, and the victims were men. What do you think about the way Outlander tackles topics like rape and sexual violence?

Balfe : These are always very difficult topics. Sexual violence is widely used against people. This is what we have to deal with. But we try to avoid the usual pitfalls, or at least respect the victims and give them a voice instead of seeing everything through the eyes of a predator. We, the writers and actors, are responsible for this and we try to treat it with full responsibility.

Heughan: And all forms of rape are, after all, violence, right? This theme is explored in many different ways throughout the series and is portrayed as horrifying as it is in real life - we have nothing to be ashamed of. Yes, it's heavy material, but it's in the books, so we have nothing to be shy about - we're all trying to be as creative as possible about it.

Why do you think it's so important for the Outlander sequel to feature new strong female characters? Especially today, when women in the industry are talking about decades of abuse?

Balfe: The landscape of TV and social media is very different today - even compared to three years ago when we first went on the air. This is not about us representing women - we are representing people with a different skin color, a different sexual orientation. The more different people we have on TV and behind the camera, the better it will be for stories and for all of us.

Heughan: We chose the best for the series, we are incredibly lucky: we have a wonderful team of writers - both women and men. It's about doing a great job - and Outlander does just that. Diana's books are about this - they are not just romance novels or time travel stories. They have so many meanings, and I think our series shows them all.

The beginning of the journey - theatrical stage

Sam Heughan young

Our hero takes his first steps towards the heart of the audience on the big theater stage. Initially, he was offered minor roles, which gradually molded him into a professional. Despite the critical statements of his teacher, who said that Sam has no ability in theater arts, our hero proves his superiority.

He had the chance to prove himself in the experimental play “Distant Islands,” where he received an important role. This work was highly praised by critics and received great success among viewers. The premiere was followed by many awards and prizes. Later the theater began touring throughout Scotland. Soon the name of the young and talented actor began to arouse interest not only among viewers, but also among directors.

Film work - career growth

Sam Heughan first roles

Soon after a successful start on the theatrical stage, he decides to try himself on television and big cinema. At first, he was invited only to supporting roles in television series such as “A Purely English Murder”, “Doctors”, “War on the Island”, “Wild West”, “Wild Party”. All this did not bring much popularity to our hero; Sam simultaneously continues to perform in the theater.

The first shifts in his career occurred after the release of the series “A Very British Sex Scandal,” which tells the biography of a journalist who was the first in Britain to openly declare his gay orientation. Here he played one of the main characters.

Since 2010, they began to make him suitable offers, for example, he starred in the military drama “First Light”. He got the main role of a rookie pilot who will have to fight in a sky battle with the German invaders. In the same year, he tried on the image of Alexander the Great in the film “Young Alexander the Great.”

Sam Heughan's first roles

In 2011, he is invited to take part in the Christmas melodrama “A Princess for Christmas,” where he has to accompany a young and beautiful girl who is forced to take care of two little nephews. The film was warmly received by critics and viewers around the world, confirmed by many positive reviews.

In 2014, a real breakthrough occurs, he gets a role that will make millions of girls around the world fall in love with him. The multi-part film “Outlander”, based on the world bestseller of the same name, is being released on television screens. The story tells about a girl named Claire, a military nurse who suddenly finds herself in 1743.

The only way to salvation is the charismatic Scottish freedom warrior, played by Sam, they met in an interesting set of circumstances. Soon a love affair arises between them, the girl will have to be torn between two times at once and decide where to stay. The series has already received six seasons and is awaiting its next renewal due to its great popularity around the world.

This is followed by several romantic paintings “Emulsion” and “When the Stars Go Out.” In the first, he tries to find his beloved after a mysterious disappearance, and in the second, he plays the role of a writer who must choose between his work and his beloved.

Sam Heughan spy

The last film with his participation was released in 2021, it is called “The Spy Who Dumped Me.” This time he got the role of a secret agent, and his partner on the set was the well-known Mila Kunis. Unfortunately, the film did not receive much recognition among viewers and earned a small rating.

Relationship with Caitriona Balfe

After the release of the popular TV series Outlander, fans began to attribute a close and romantic relationship with his co-star on the set, Caitriona Balfe. The actors showed real passion on screen. Soon these gossips were refuted; Sam stated that Katrina was not his girlfriend and that they had only friendly relations. In general, our hero prefers to hide the secrets of his personal life from intrusive media and journalists. Everything that is hidden outside the screen is a private secret.

Biography

Sam Heughan haunts no one. Outlander fans are heartbroken. And they can be understood - for this you just need to look at the languid red-haired handsome man, deservedly called a sex symbol. And the male half of the audience probably began to respect him after filming commercials for Tennent's Lager light beer, where the actor invariably appeared as a true gentleman in a tailcoat and top hat.

Personal life – Mackenzie Mauzy

After the rumors about his colleague from the series subsided, fans began to exaggerate the topic of a secret relationship with a performer and actress named Mackenzie Mauzy. Young people began to be often seen at parties, and joint photos from vacations with beautiful views of Scotland appeared on the Internet. There was no doubt that the couple had been dating for a long time. The actor himself put an end to this whole dispute. He stated that he and Mozi were just close friends, and the issue was closed; Mackenzie Mozi and Sam broke up.

There were rumors about a relationship with the actress from the TV series “Twin Peaks” Amy Shiels, once again baseless, they are not lovers. In his early years he did not have much luck with the fairer sex. In an interview, he talked about a first date that didn’t work out. The guy made an appointment at Burger King, but there were two identical cafes on the street and the lovers came to different ones.

Currently, Sam is single and open to new relationships. In an interview, he said that he dreams of coming home, where his daughter, son, wife are waiting for him - a full-fledged family, but so far there is not enough time for all this. Our hero tries to spend his free time from filming in nature; they go on long hikes in the mountains or forests. It should be noted that he fully complies with the traditions of his people and wears a traditional skirt on holidays. He loves to ride horses and is a professional fencing enthusiast.

"Incredibly Close Friend" Caitriona Balfe

In addition to wild professional success, Outlander gave Sam a friend, or rather a girlfriend. We are talking about the fiery brunette Caitriona Balfe, the lead actress in the series, with whom Heughan’s character, according to the script, developed a passionate affair. Oh, how hot the love scenes were, how piercing Sam’s look at his partner was, how sensual the tactile contacts were... The acting was so convincing that perhaps the lazy one didn’t attribute a real-life relationship to the young people. As usual, rumor, listening to the on-screen experiences of the heroes, instantly married them in real life.

Sweet couple

The touching couple was indeed spotted together on walks, social events, and candid photo shoots. But apart from the “incredibly close friendship,” neither he nor she confirmed any speculation. It's a pity, because they are a beautiful couple!

Tabloid press about the orientation of a sex symbol

The tabloid press is not asleep, given that our hero’s heart has been free for a long time, a lot of evidence and refutations have appeared on the Internet and forums that the famous actor is actually gay. All this is just naked gossip; Sam himself has never openly admitted his gay orientation. What makes him suspicious is that he supports the LGBT community. In his interview, he said that he has gay fans, whom he treats with warmth.

Sorry, there are no surveys available at this time.

Personal life

The debunked myths about the handsome Heughan's lover once again excited the imagination of crazy fans in love. Balfe had long been Tony McGill's fiancée, and Heughan was credited with having fleeting romances with his colleagues. Sam's avid bachelor life haunts neither reporters nor fans.

Object of female desire
Meanwhile, for almost 10 years now, advocates of morality have been chasing the Scot, looking for flaws in him. And the LGBT fraternity is eager to see him in their controversial army. Perhaps this is due to his visual attractiveness with hints of sweetness. Moreover, his brilliant screen transformation into heroes of an informal orientation. And it seems that sometimes serious contenders for his hand, heart and wealth flashed in Sam’s life, like Twin Peaks star Amy Shiels, and Heughan himself confidently repeats his desire and readiness to start a family and experience the joy of fatherhood, but no... spiteful critics don’t believe it. Only Hewens never said out loud which camp he belonged to, and since he didn’t cut off the attacks, it means he didn’t refute it.

Filmography

sam heughan movies

Over the course of his entire career, our hero managed to appear in a relatively small number of full-length films. The beginning of his career was colored by roles in multi-part television projects, in most of which he received episodic roles. Let's consider the track record of our hero, the main roles in films for 2021:

  1. First light - 2010.
  2. Young Alexander the Great – 2010.

Now he continues to act and at the same time participate in major productions on the big stage of the theater. In 2021, our hero is expected to work a lot in the action film Bloodshot, where he will play the main character, and Vin Diesel will be his partner on the set. We are waiting for a major and breakthrough return of Sam on the screens. The latest news says that Heughan has decided to try himself again for the role of James Bond 007, because the previous attempt in 2006 failed.

In the article we met a talented and handsome actor from Scotland named Heughan. He is known to the general public for his role in the popular TV series Outlander, where he brought to life the face of a valiant warrior. Now he continues to act and at the same time participate in theater productions. Sam Heughan is calm in his personal life; at the moment his heart is completely free.

Childhood and adolescence: Balmaclellan-Glasgow

When the second boy was born into the family of young Scottish hippies Heughan Christine and David, he, like the elder Cirdan, was named after the character of John Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. If the first-born was named after an elf, then the youngest, Samwise or Sam, received the name of a hobbit, Frodo Baggins’s faithful companion on his journey to Mordor.

The village of Balmaclellan, where Sam was born, was small - there were about a hundred families, but it could boast an interesting history. Why, the house in which the Heughan family lived used to be the stables of an ancient castle.

Soon after the birth of their second child, the couple divorced. The three-year-old child did not understand why he and his brother only had their mother left and where did their father go, whom he and his brother had not seen for many years. Chrissie worked as hard as she could, worked as a teacher, was a shoemaker, and tried to start her own business. At some point, the woman decided to move with her sons to the village of New Galloway. Sam went to first grade there. There were only a couple of people in the same class as him at school, but there were many children of other ages living in the area, and Sam never lacked playmates. The boy and his friends spent hours in nature: running through the forests with a wooden sword, pretending to be one or another historical character.

Actor Sam Heughan

He generally had a passion for history, and especially loved the period of King Arthur. Perhaps because in his native area, Dumfries and Galloway, there were many castle ruins, which the boy eagerly explored. His other childhood hobby was music - Sam played trombone and trumpet.

Then the Heughan family moved to Edinburgh, where the youngest son graduated from school with his mother, and at the same time received an education at an art school. He then went to travel around Europe and America and graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts in Glasgow.
