We spoke to one of Turkey's biggest stars, Kenan Imirzalıoğlu, while sitting at home during this difficult period of time. We had a deep conversation about his wife Sinem Kobal, unknown aspects of his character and his new project. We couldn't meet Kenan Imirzalıoğlu in person due to the coronavirus epidemic, but we talked to him via video call. We called him at a time convenient for us and during our interview we drank tea with him, it turned out to be a very pleasant conversation. He said that he is currently spending time with his wife Sinem Kobal, watching films from his favorite directors: Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan and Gaspar Noe, and reading a lot of books. -He tells us that health is the most important thing in our life! Life is very fragile and we can suddenly lose all the wonderful things we have.

What is valuable to you during this period of time?

-The ability to breathe in comfort, meet our loved ones, talk to people face to face...

How does this affect art?

-Despite all difficulties, art will find a way to express itself. During this time, people somehow express their inner changes and feelings through art.

Do you have fear? For example, if the quarantine period extends, then I will not be able to work in my profession...

-I worry about social problems, not individual problems. Let this disease disappear from our country and the whole world. Let people get better. We all live with the worry that our elderly may contract this virus. People come first. If you're not a human being, it doesn't matter whether you're in a TV series or a movie.

How do you spend your time at home?

-I take care of my Bonsai trees and flowers. Now there is a period of earth change. I change the soil and add some vitamins to it. I have a passion for music, I collect CDs from artists I love. Now, as soon as I wake up in the morning, I put on a CD with music and start my day that way.

What are you listening to?

-In the morning I listen to classical music... By noon the rhythm speeds up; I start listening to King Crimson, Led Airship, or get a little nostalgic and listen to Metallica in between. In the evening the music becomes romantic; Carmen McRae, Ella Fitzgerald... Then either jazz or rock... I also play sports at home, watch films, read books. Sin and I read poetry to each other.

-We both love Cemal Sürey. We read Nazim Hikmet. Also Necip Fazil, Edip Cansever, Turgut Uyar...

Ooooh, you are a very romantic couple! How does it affect relationships when spouses are at home together 24/7?

-Ever since Xin and I got married, we have already spent most of our time together. We are used to being together within four walls, it is very pleasant.

Handsome, talented, successful and famous... What is it like to be Kenan Imirzalıoğlu?

-There are many benefits, but there are some limitations and responsibilities that come with these benefits. We must pay attention to every step we take. But this curve corresponds to the line of correctness. Therefore, I agree with the position I am in.

You seem very stern from the outside. But when you laugh, this severity is replaced by warmth. You are difficult to understand. Tell us a little something we don't see...

-This is the most difficult part for me when they say: “tell me about yourself.”

-I'm happy in my own little world.

What drives you crazy?

-Failure and injustice.

What can you tell us about yourself that will surprise us?

-I'm much more emotional than I seem. I am greatly impressed by what I see. Sometimes my eyes fill with tears while watching.

Don't you have the trait of being an owner?

-Perhaps this trait was there when I was 20 years old. But changes began when I turned 30.

Let's divide life into periods...

-In their 20s, people are more self-confident than they think. My boundaries were also very sharp and sharp. My anger and devotion were very great. I doubted what I saw and thought that some of the things I idealized at age 30 weren't really what they seemed. Life teaches us some things. The main thing at 40 years old; Rather than increase your anger or sharpen your boundaries, it is best and truest to understand the person you are encountering. Understanding reduces anger. I continue to discover about myself and explore the inner self.

What do you expect from yourself? what questions do you ask?

-What kind of life have I lived? What do I want to do? Will I be able to live as long as I live now? In fact, I received the first fruit from the answers to these questions when Sinem settled in my heart. Thank God that our love was cemented by marriage.

You are the first person in Turkey to receive the title “Best Model of The World”. Despite this, we have never seen you topless in your projects. There's definitely a "gym history" category for celebrities these days. What is the connection between good acting and a good body?

-It’s good that they pay attention to their physique. But a professional actor does what the character requires. An actor must be in shape if his character requires him to be in shape, and if he needs to gain weight, then the actor must gain weight. If you had to be a muscular actor, the best actors would be bodybuilders. Muscle is just a visual state. And what is much more important is what emotions you give to TV viewers.

Okay, do you agree that the increase in electricity and high libido between the main actors brings success to the project?

-This question sounds to me the same as the one about muscular actors (laughs). If the writers want such partners, between whom there is this electricity, then they will find such professional actors for these roles. Besides, this is acting.

What is your biggest dream related to this profession?

-It would be nice to hear fresh ideas from Yavuz Turgul on the set (laughs). Or it would be nice to enter the world of Nuri Bilge Ceylan. But even if this happens, an actor's dreams never end. This is a bit of audacity and the “appetite” of the actors. I hope that the Almighty will not cut off our “appetite”.

Was there anything else that happened in your career that we don’t know about?

-Chagan Yrmak sent me an offer to star in the film “Father and Son”. I couldn't accept this project because I had another job at the time.

You come from the village of Üçem, which is located in Ankara. The first thing you remember from your childhood?

-The smell of thyme and white lambs that I grazed in the village...

Did you ever think that you would become one of our country's biggest stars?

-No, I never even thought about it.

Despite the fact that you come from a small village, you entered Yıldız Teknik Üniversitesi University to study mathematical engineering. Were you a hardworking student?

-I actually didn't go to university after high school. I was completely immersed in adolescence, I had a lot of wind in my head at that time... My father taught me a course in agriculture in the village for a year; how the soil is processed, how manure is poured, how animals are cared for. After these agricultural lessons, which lasted a year, my mother decided to send me to Istanbul to live with my brother (laughs). That's how I went to university then. There are words like: “Geography is your destiny,” so the point is to change this destiny.

Did Istanbul scare you?

-As a young man with roots from Ankara, I said that I would graduate from university in Istanbul and return to Ankara. But for those who come to Istanbul, it is very difficult to return. One of my friends said: “Istanbul is my heavenly city, my city of madness.” Indeed, Istanbul is one of the rare cities where you can experience these two meanings.

You have played characters that are etched in the history of Turkish television. Imagine, you enter a room, and there are: Ezel Miroglu, Mahir Kara. Who would you hug first?

-I will greet them all. But I will hug Ezel and say, “These friends wouldn’t be here without you.”

Very soon you will return to the screens with the new series “Aleph”, where you will play a character named Kemal...

-Yes, the series, which will be released on BluTV, will have 8 episodes. The characters I played before were people who were worried about someone who was beside himself, trying to lend a helping hand to his father, loved ones, etc... Kemal is trying to save himself.

What is your story about?

-Kemal experienced a difficult loss. He received a blow from life. He cannot live in England and returns to his homeland. Kemal is a policeman. Thanks to his education, he views his profession with Western guidance. This is Kemal's adventure in which he has to solve a serial murder with Settar (Ahmet Mümtaz Taylan), who is a Dogulu man... What attracted me most about this work was the director Emin Alper and the script of the series.

An earthquake, a viral epidemic... How does the world we live in make you feel?

-I see nature's reaction to insensitive people. Glaciers are melting, earthquakes and viruses are getting worse. In this process, people locked themselves in their homes and the world's air was purified. Whatever we do, we are now in this world! Now he reciprocates our feelings. As long as we respect the society in which we live together, that respect will undoubtedly return to us.

One of the issues that is on Turkey's agenda is violence against women. What do you think about women's rights?

-As I grew older, I began to turn into a women's rights advocate.

How did this change happen?

-When I was 20 years old, I heard the following words: “In this world, the male order prevails. Men built this world,” I then thought: “How could it be different?” Now I know that there is a serious injustice in these words. Men use their powers against women. This is a topic that is not even worth discussing. We can raise our level of civilization not by suppressing women, but by giving women their rights or even positive discrimination. I don’t like the expression “reaching out to women.” Our women don't need this, if we leave them alone, they will already get their rights.

Are you worried about how you can bring a child into this world in this day and age?

-I want a child, if the Almighty gives it to us. For those who ask us: “Do you want to bring a child into this world?”, I say the following: “Maybe our children will fix this world!”

Is it difficult to be one of the most handsome men in Turkey?

-It's a burden if you take your appearance too seriously. I prefer not to take it seriously. Because this is God's creation, not something I did. The late Neshet Ertaş has this phrase: “There is only one thing that a person can boast of, and that is his work.” I can only brag about my profession and what I invest in myself.

Have you always been the person everyone loved?

-As a teenager, I didn’t feel very handsome, but my friends at university once said to me: “Why don’t you work as a model?” Then something changed...

Your height is 1.91 cm. Have there been any difficulties in your life due to your height?

-Can't it be? As I grew up to be 1.91 tall, I started to have a little trouble. I hit my head. Previously, shoes were up to size 45, and I had difficulty putting them on. That's why my shoes always seemed small and my pants were always short.

You don't have pages on social networks. Then maybe you have a fake account?

-Well, that’s not a question... Sinem used to show me her photo on Instagram, I tried to support her and accidentally went there and liked it (laughs). I don't need social networks, and I'm not going to register there. When I started this work, there was no social media in my life. We received feedback about our work from the streets. In this sense I'm a little old-fashioned, but I'm calm.

How much of a priority was reputation when you started this job?

-In 1997, I received the title “Best Model of the World”, then I had already earned a reputation for myself. At that time, Osman Sonav invited me to star in the series “Crazy Heart”. As someone who didn't know acting back then, I would say; it was not glory, but a responsibility placed on me. I don't think anyone has just such a single goal - fame. Because it only gives you a temporary calling.

When you become a good and popular actor, you immediately become responsible for whether the series stays on television or not. Do you think this is correct?

-No, I don’t think so. It is not right! The work does not rest only on Kenan and does not sink only because of Kenan. This is teamwork. The main actors are the locomotives, the project script is the rails. If the writers lay out these rails correctly, the locomotives will be able to pull the cars with very great force.

What have you learned from this job?

- Sympathy. No one should judge someone without knowing his fate and without going through his path.

For many years your boundaries have not been violated at all. What is the secret of not getting kicked out?

-My family planted the seeds in me as a child; conscience and common sense. Glory is a shirt made of fire. If you don't notice what you're wearing, you'll get burned. I always thought this was my chance. I wasn't ambitious, so I took it easy. So I didn't compromise with myself. If you make these concessions, you will not be able to sleep peacefully at night. I have always in my life cared about putting my head on the pillow and falling asleep peacefully.

You and Sin Kobal have been married for 4 years. What is the secret of this marriage, about which there has never been any scandalous news?

-When we signed, we made vows to each other and hit the road. She and I will be together until the end of our days, if the Almighty allows it. Love is very important, but you must not forget about mutual respect, be yourself and behave the way you want - with these points everything becomes easier.

What changed after you signed the registry office?

-At first we were concerned about the typical roles of husband and wife. And then, since we are both actors, we understood how it was and immediately found our way. We were together for five years and we spent 90 percent of that time side by side. And this is a very good time. May the Almighty protect us from the evil eye, I don’t want to say much.

What is the most important thing you learned from Blue?

-Accept people as they are...

There is an expression: “Love lives for three years.” Does love really change shape after three years?

-The initial state is very complex, sharp and upright. You stop being yourself. Love must develop to carry it throughout your life, otherwise love is a waste of time and damage to the mind.

How is your love developing now?

-We have found our balance with deep love and respect.

What is the impact of the same profession on relationships?

-I have been in this profession for 20 years. Every time I start a new project, I feel helpless again and again. In such cases, it is a great chance for me to have a colleague like Sinem, who also gives me advice from the outside.

How neutral are you when you criticize each other?

-Sinem doesn’t feel sorry for himself or me (laughs). She tells me to my face how she feels without bending or bending. We are open to each other.
