Jim's favorite pastime was parody; he always managed to make his family and friends laugh and entertain himself by impersonating acquaintances, as well as famous people and politicians. He could spend hours making faces in front of the mirror, he dreamed of becoming an artist. Performances for an audience of millions, television, filming, worldwide popularity - this is what young Kerry dreamed of.
Therefore, already at a very young age, he wrote a lot of parodies and sent them to a popular show, from where he received no response, but this did not stop him. At the age of 15, he performed for the first time at the Yak-Yak comedy club, where, alas, he failed again. The audience booed the young comedian, and the club owner was extremely disappointed.
Only 2 years later, Kerry again decided to try himself as an artist and performed in one of the local clubs. Here stunning success awaited him; he soon became a truly real local star.
Film career
Having conquered his native land, Jim decided to move on. In the early 80s, he moved to Los Angeles and gave wonderful performances in local comedy clubs, his popularity was gaining momentum, but the dream of acting and television did not let him go, so he periodically auditioned for different castings.
There were unsuccessful attempts to audition for the NBC program “Saturday Night Life” and the film “Capital Taxi Drivers.” And yet Jim achieved his goal - for the first time on television, he played animation producer Skip Tarkenton in the children's animated series “The Duck Factory.” Kerry also became one of the best young parodists in America.
It seemed that life was getting better, my career was going uphill. Jim has the opportunity to help his parents financially and even move them to Los Angeles, but suddenly the program is closed and he is left completely without work.
The actor is forced to start a new search, go through many auditions, but all to no avail. At the same time, Jim's mother's health deteriorates greatly and he has to send his parents to Canada. On this basis, the comedian began to experience depression for the first time.
In 1985, Kerry finally got a role in the comedy Once Bitten, after which the actor finally won his audience. He continued to work hard, sending his tapes to film studios and in 1991 he managed to create his own show, which he dedicated to his mother, who died shortly before the release of the program.
In 1992, Jim devoted most of his time to developing the low-budget comedy Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.
Everyone abandoned this project: screenwriters, comedians, actors, so Kerry had to take on all the work: he started writing the script, came up with the image of the main character, right down to the hairstyle, he believed in the success of this comedy and his intuition did not let him down. In three weeks of release, the film grossed thirty-eight million dollars. Despite the fact that critics were not enthusiastic about the film, the detective story about a funny pet detective became incredibly popular and two years later the second part was released. Ventura has become one of the immortal characters in films. For this project, Jim received his first MTV Movie Awards for Best Comedy Actor.
After such success, the actor’s career quickly began to gain momentum.
Actor's musical career
In addition to parody and acting, Jim was also interested in music. While still a teenager, he organized his first musical group, “Spoons,” where his musical career began. He enjoyed singing and enjoyed performing as a vocalist on various television shows, performing parody songs such as "White, White, Baby" (Vanilla Ice "Ice Ice Baby") and "Imposter" (Snow "Informer"). He even parodied American President Bill Clinton. He also starred in various music videos, which he himself created.
His vocals can be heard in feature films: a cover version of “Somebody to Love” by Jefferson Airplane in the film “The Cable Guy”, “This Friendly World” in the film “Man on the Moon”, “Grinch 2000”, recorded with the participation of Busta Rhymes in the film “ The Grinch stole Christmas."
Once, the actor even performed and recorded the hit of the legendary group The Beatles “I’m the Walrus”, and in 2011 he performed at Arlene’s Grocery with rock covers of the songs “I Started a Joke” by the Bee Gees, “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” ensemble The Smashing Pumpkins and “Creep” Radiohead.
Jim's funny pranks
The actor loves to amuse people not only with great parodies and jokes, but also with practical jokes. So, for example, while still a little tomboy, Jim endlessly lost a non-existent white mouse at home, which led his mother to terrible fear, because she was so afraid of mice.
At twenty years old, he went on stage completely naked, taking only one sock to cover himself a little. The audience was amazed.
In 2006, on a trip to the city of Taba, Jim learned about the existence of his double and invited him to live in a luxury hotel and deftly dodge annoying reporters for him. And the actor himself moved to Jerusalem and spent time there quietly.
One day, Kerry appeared in public dressed in a swimsuit of one of his ex-girlfriends, then surprised everyone with a new punk-style hairstyle, and could also go out to play billiards in a prestigious hotel in a scuba diver's costume, which certainly amused everyone around him. Jim, even in everyday life, never ceases to be a comedian.
Biography of Jim Carrey
Jim Carrey was born on January 17, 1962 in the provincial town of Newmarket (Ontario, Canada). He grew up and was raised in a Catholic family of very modest means.
His father, Percy Kerry, worked as an accountant and later as a factory security guard. Mother, Katley Kerry, was a singer for some time, after which she began raising children. In total, the couple had 2 boys - Jim and John, and 2 girls - Rita and Pat.
Childhood and youth
At an early age, Jim began to show artistic abilities. He loved to parody the people around him, causing his acquaintances to laugh sincerely.
Jim Carrey as a child
At the age of 14, the young man and his family moved to Ontario, and then to Scarborough. The head of the family worked as a security guard at a factory that manufactured rims and tires.
Since Kerry Sr. could not properly provide for a large family, all its members had to start working.
Jim and his brother and sisters were cleaning the premises. The guys washed floors and toilets to provide financial support to their parents.
All these events negatively affected the character of the future actor. The young man began to look at life pessimistically, withdrawing into himself.
Later, the children and mother decided to leave this job. As a result, due to lack of money, the family had to live in a van for some time.
During that period of biography, Jim Carrey became a student at Eldershot High School. He then got a job at a steel mill in Dofasco.
At the age of 17, Kerry formed the musical group Spoons. Soon he tried to perform on stage as a comedian.
The public looked with delight at the guy parodying famous people, as a result of which he was able to gain quite a lot of popularity. Over time, people from all over Toronto came to see Jim perform.
Jim Carrey in his youth
Later, the famous comedian Rodney Dangerfield drew attention to the talented artist, inviting him to perform as his opening act in Las Vegas.
Kerry accepted the offer, but his collaboration with Rodney did not last long. However, this allowed him to meet various influential people and gain an even larger army of fans.
Jim then moved to Los Angeles. Initially, his career was going uphill, but then a black streak came in his creative biography. For a long time he could not find a job, as a result of which he fell into depression.
Kerry went to all sorts of auditions, but all his efforts were unsuccessful. In moments of despair, he sculpted sculptures of various cartoon characters.
Personal life
“I want to love, and I love. And it doesn’t matter how long it lasts - centuries or a moment,” this is Kerry’s motto in his personal life. He falls in love easily, loves deeply and truly enjoys the time spent together, but does not believe that love should last forever.
In 1987, Kerry married a waitress at the club where he performed, Melissa Wamer. 7 months later they had a beautiful daughter, Jane Erin Kerry. Their family life was full of a variety of emotions, from unbridled joy to complete disappointment and fatigue. And after 8 years of marriage, the couple broke up.
When Jim was 29 years old, his mother passed away, and three years later his father also passed away. The actor was very attached to his parents, loved them very much, took care of them, always tried to help, so this loss was very difficult for him. He was very worried and was in a state of depression for a long time. And only his beloved work gave him the strength to live and act further.
In 1996, the artist married again. This time, his partner in the film “Dumb and Dumber” Lauren Holly became his chosen one, but the marriage lasted only 10 months.
Then the actor had light affairs with Renee Zellweger, with his personal doctor, with a model of a famous American magazine, and there were even rumors about his four-year affair with the Russian ballerina Anastasia Volochkova.
In 2005, Jim met fashion model Janey Macarthy, whom he dated until 2010. “Complicated and tense” - this is how journalists characterize this relationship because of Jim’s periodic strange attacks, but the model herself said that all this is speculation.
In 2012, on the set, Kerry met Irishwoman Catriona White, who worked there as a makeup artist.
This was one of the actor’s brightest, stormiest and at the same time tragic novels.
A few months later, the couple broke up, but in May 2015, feelings flared up again between Jim and Catriona and they tried to renew their relationship, but nothing worked out. On September 24 of the same year, they separated again, and five days later Catriona committed suicide by taking a lethal dose of pills. The news of her death deeply shocked Jim; he took the loss very hard.
Four years later, at one of the awards ceremonies, Jim appeared in public, accompanied by the young actress Ginger Gonzaga. He met her on the set of the series “Dying Laughing,” then they continued to work together on the series “Jokes,” where Jim starred in an erotic scene for the first time in his acting career.

After several failures at the beginning of his career, the young artist fell into despondency, but was able to get out of it quite quickly. Then depression attacked him again in adulthood. The reason for this was the death of his parents and divorce from his first wife. Then Kerry resorted to antidepressants and underwent treatment several times. - model (the authoritative print publication “People” included the actor in the list of the most beautiful people living on the planet in 1997);
- an artist in the stand up genre (the initial stage of his career consisted entirely of work on television in comedy shows);
- an artist (he is interested in painting, paints pictures “on inspiration” as a method of expressing thoughts and state of mind during difficult periods);
- Jack Sparrow (sorry, Captain Jack Sparrow; the role was given to Johnny Depp, since Kerry preferred the more interesting, in his opinion, project “Bruce Almighty,” leaving a few personally invented jokes for the pirate saga).
32. Philanthropist.
Jim donates a portion of his fees to a fund to support children with serious illnesses.
Actor Quotes
Over time, Jim turned into a real philosopher. He loves to talk about life's problems:
“Problems need to be solved, not washed down with pills”
“When things are really bad, all you can do is laugh”
He also talks a lot about dreams:
“If you give up your dreams, what is left?”
And, of course, about acting:
“I would like to be a great actor whose name would live for centuries.
I would be proud of myself. But it doesn't have to be that way. You just need to be yourself. That's all."
And many other wonderful quotes that inspire and make you think.
His mirror was his only friend
Jim Carrey often dealt with loneliness. “I spent most of my free time in my room, looking only in the mirror. I didn’t know I had to communicate with anyone,” Jim said. He spent a lot of time creating "faces", but this leisure activity Kerry nostalgically calls "good time". The future comedian never remembers periods of loneliness with disgust. After he dropped out of school, he said he didn't want to socialize with his peers and didn't want to make friends.
