Oscar-winning actor Robin Williams died five years ago

Biography of Robin Williams

Robin Williams is called a comedian, but he went down in cinematic history as one of the world's greatest dramatic actors. Older, but not matured Peter Pan; a robot in love with his owner; a father who decided to become a woman to take care of his children; an elderly darkroom owner who became a psychopath due to loneliness and envy of someone else's life... The images embodied by Robin Williams will forever remain the standard of high art.

Carier start

Back in the early 70s, Williams Robin began his acting career, performing in the stand-up genre. Mostly Williams found his audience in small clubs. And already in 1977, Robin was noticed by a television producer, who invited him to television, in his program.

In 1978, a fateful event occurred: director Penny Marshall saw the comedian perform in a nightclub and invited him to her comedy series. So Williams made his film debut in the serial film “Happy Days”. Robin's performance captivated the viewer. Therefore, producers later created a separate show for the actor - “Mork and Mindy”. Thus began the story of resounding success for the stand-up comedian.

In 1979, the actor’s photo was already on the cover of Time magazine and Rolling Stone. Until the 80s, Williams starred mainly in TV series, and appeared in “big” films only sporadically. Robin's first serious work in a feature film was the role of a sailor in the film Popeye. With a budget of $20 million and a simple plot, this film grossed $60 million thanks to the talent of the comedian alone. Next were “The World According to Garp”, “School of Survival” and “Moscow on the Hudson”. But important roles were only ahead.

Childhood

Robin Williams was born on July 21, 1951 in Chicago.
His father Robert was 45 years old and for him, like his wife Laurie, this was his second marriage. Robert was a top manager at the automobile giant Ford, and Laurie left the modeling business long ago and was raising children. Robin was the youngest child in a family that raised children from previous marriages. The older siblings weren't particularly interested in Robin. Suffering from excess weight, he grew up very shy and was forced to visit a school psychologist. The teenager managed to get rid of the extra pounds, but complexes about his own appearance will haunt him throughout his life. He skillfully disguised his shyness with jokes and soon acquired a reputation as a school wit.

Robin Williams as a child

In 1963, the family moved to Detroit, where his father was offered to head the company's head office. In the automobile capital of America, the Williamses settled in a luxurious mansion of 30 rooms, and at the new school, Robin made friends who immediately accepted him into their circle. The boy became the best student in the class, and his sense of humor made him one of the most popular guys in the school.

Robin Williams in his youth

In 1969, Robin entered the political science course at Claremont College, showing one of the highest results on the entrance exams. After the young man began to play in the student theater, the career of a diplomat ceased to attract him. A year later, Robin left college and moved to New York. The parents were upset by their son's choice, but tried to understand him.

While the whole world mourns the death of the famous Hollywood actor, new details have emerged in the investigation into the death of Robin Williams. As sources told the Daily Mail, the 63-year-old artist hanged himself in his home in Tiburon, California, at night while his wife Susan Schneider slept peacefully in the next room. Williams' body was discovered by his assistant at 11:55 a.m. Monday. His wife last saw Robin on Sunday evening. In the morning, the woman calmly left the house to go about her business, thinking that her husband was still sleeping. When the deputy found Williams, the body had already gone numb, a process that typically takes 12 to 18 hours after death. Robin sat fully clothed, with a belt around his neck. Before strangling himself with a belt, the artist tried to open his veins - a pocket knife with traces of blood was lying nearby, and there were characteristic cuts on the deceased’s wrists.

It is no secret that Williams was treated for alcohol and drug addiction for a long time, and also suffered from prolonged depression. However, it seems that the main reason for the actor’s suicide is financial. Robin was plagued by major financial problems: after two “bloody” divorces, he was forced to pay his ex-wives $30 million. In addition, the actor was very upset that his comedy show “The Crazy Ones” was canceled on CBS in May. Shortly before his death, Williams complained to friends that he urgently needed to find a job and that he had big financial problems. Two years ago, Robin put his beloved Napa Valley ranch up for sale—he called it “Villa of Smiles.” Initially, he wanted to sell the house for 35 million, then reduced the price to 29.9 million, but so far no buyer has been found. Maintaining a huge estate took a heavy toll on the star’s already depleted pockets.

— Robin fell into a deep depression. “He felt humiliated and embarrassed that his TV show was canceled,” a source told Radaronline.com. “He was 63 years old, and it was humiliating for him to ask for a role on television. This is not the position he dreamed of being in at his age.

Robin Williams has been married three times. The first time he walked down the aisle was with model Valeria Velardi in 1978. He lived with her for 10 years, divorcing in 1988. Valeria gave birth to the comedian's eldest son, Zachary. In 1989, Williams married producer Marsha Graces. From this marriage he left two children: son Cody Allen and daughter Zelda, the youngest and most beloved. Robin Williams' third marriage to Susan Schneider was officially registered in 2011.

Career. Start

During the day, Robin mastered acting at the Juilliard School, and in the evenings he performed humorous monologues in New York clubs. The young stand-up comedian’s sketches were popular, and the club owners paid Robin well, who was happy with everything at this stage of his life. Two years later, his teacher John Houseman advised Williams to immediately quit the craft of a restaurant comedian, before it completely killed the makings of a great actor in him, and go to Hollywood to do serious work.

After listening to his mentor, Robin moved to Los Angeles, but did not quit his job as a comedian. In 1977, producer George Schlatter saw his performance and invited the young man to his television show “Hokhmas,” which was going through hard times. The participation of a bright young artist did not help revive the project, but attracted the attention of other producers to Robin. Throughout the year, Robin was a frequent guest on popular shows and even performed in London clubs, where he won the hearts of prim Englishmen.

At the end of 1978, Williams was invited to the popular sitcom Mork and Mindy, where he was offered the role of the funny alien Mork, who fell in love with an earthly girl. The project was released over four years, and for his role Robin received his first award - the Golden Globe.

Best roles. 1988 – 2000

In 1988, the actor came to the attention of the mad genius Terry Gilliam, who was filming a film about the adventures of Baron Munchausen.
The role of the Moon King, with his detachable and freely flying head, performed by Williams, fittingly fits into the bizarre mosaic, which included John Neville, Sarah Polley, as well as young Uma Thurman and the famous Pythonesque Eric Idle. The role of a literature teacher in Dead Poets Society completely changed the actor’s attitude towards himself. If before this film Williams perceived himself exclusively as a comedic actor, then by playing the role of John Keating, he revealed his potential as a dramatic actor. The film was a huge success with audiences, but was received ambiguously by critics, who condemned the filmmakers for what they believed was an excessive emphasis on the transience of life and the inevitability of death. The film starred a young Ethan Hawke, Gail Hansen and Josh Charles. The true highlight of the film was the beautiful Lara Flynn Boyle.

In the drama “Awakening,” not very well known to Russian viewers, Robin played a doctor who discovered a miracle drug that could restore the joy of life to patients suffering from a rare disease. In this film, based on real events described by Dr. Oliver Sacks, the role of one of the patients was played by Robert De Niro. During filming, Robin turned around awkwardly and accidentally hit Robert, breaking his nose. Subsequently, both actors joked a lot about this topic, and De Niro even said that Robin did not break his nose, but set it back. Other roles in this touching film were played by Peter Stromare and Max von Sydow.

Robert De Niro and Robin Williams

The actor himself called his roles in the 1991 films “Captain Hook” by Steven Spielberg and “The Fisher King” some of his favorites.

Robin Williams in the film "Captain Hook"

In the film “Captain Hook,” the actor plays an adult and tired Peter Pan, rescuing his children from the captivity of the villain Hook. Finding himself in a magical land, Peter Pan suddenly realizes that the past has not gone away and in his soul he is still the same eternal child. Williams himself was such an eternal child, which is why he managed to embody this complex character so perfectly. The adult fairy tale starred Dustin Hoffman, as well as Bob Hoskins, Julia Roberts and British star Maggie Smith.

In The Fisher King, Gilliam gave the role of the tramp Perry to Robin, saying that he did not see any other actor capable of playing it. Robin really played in such a way that the audience cried and laughed. The moving, award-winning phantasmagoria about the friendship between two broken people stars Jeff Bridges, Amanda Plummer and Mercedes Rule.

Robin Williams in The Fisher King

The role of Daniel Hillard, who lost his job and family, who decided to take the desperate step of dressing up in a woman's dress and getting a job as a nanny in the house where his children live, in the comedy drama Mrs. Doubtfire, became further proof of the unique talent of Robin Williams, who is able to portray any character on screen. image. The film became the best film of 1993 and entered the top 100 highest-grossing films of the Dream Factory.

Robin Williams as Mrs. Doubtfire

Also during this period of his work, the actor played leading roles in the fantasy thriller “Jumanji”, in the dramas “Being Human” and “Good Will Hunting”. The end of the 20th century gave the world the touching drama “What Dreams May Come,” in which Robin played the role of a man whose soul goes to another world to meet his deceased relatives. The difficult story forced every viewer to think about the main issues of life and raised the topic of religion. The film stars Cuba Gooding Jr., Annabella Sciorra and Max von Sydow.

Still from the movie "Jumanji"

The role of the robot Andy, who has more humanity than most people, in the fantasy drama "Bicentennial Man" again amazed audiences with the depth of Robin's performance. His character raises questions of self-identity in modern society and renounces immortality in order to die as a human. The film did not receive prizes or awards, but was included in the golden fund of American cinema. The film, based on the novel by Isaac Asimov, stars Oliver Platt and Embeth Davidtz, as well as Sam Neill.

The actor’s last film, released on the big screen in May of this year, was a comedy (today I would like to say drama), which was called “This Morning in New York”

Mrs. Doubtfire project was announced in April.

Williams' hero, Daniel Hillard, loses his job, his wife leaves him, and after the divorce he is allowed to see his children only once a week! But Daniel finds a way out - he dresses up in a woman's dress and becomes Mrs. Doubtfire - an elderly woman. He hires his own wife as a housekeeper, and now he can see his children every day. The consequences, naturally, will be the most unpredictable.

The film received two Golden Globe awards - for Best Picture (Comedy or Musical) and Best Actor (Comedy or Musical) (Robin Williams). And also an Oscar for best makeup.

The second part was to be directed by Chris Columbus, who directed the first part. Most likely, the project will now be closed.

The latest in the actor’s plans was the family drama Trouble. Only one actress was approved for the role in this film - Alexandria Tatum. The film was supposed to be her debut. The director has not yet been chosen.

I think that now the releases of all unreleased films with the actor will shift.

My favorite films with Robin Williams.

Taking this opportunity, I’ll tell you about my favorite films with the actor; you’ll probably start watching them now and maybe you missed something before.

"Dead Poets Society"

1989 drama.

John Keating (Williams) is a new English professor at a conservative American college. What distinguishes him from the prim mass of teachers is his ease of communication, eccentric behavior and disregard for the curriculum. One day he initiates his charges into the secret of the Dead Poets Society. From this moment on, each student tries to find his own voice in the faceless choir, to look at the world around him, jumping high above the gray school fence.

The film won an Academy Award for Best Screenplay. The film also stars a very young Ethan Hawke. I add on my own that I wish everyone such teachers as Williams’ hero.

Another 1990 drama, Awakening

.

Still from the film "Awakening"

Complex subject matter, heavy film, and great acting by Robert DeNiro and Robin Williams. The film is based on real events that happened in 1969-1970 with neurologist Oliver Sacks, who later wrote memoirs about it. Harold Pinter also wrote the play A Kind of Alaska based on this book.

Dr. Malcolm Sayer, a shy doctor and scientist, uses experimental drugs to "awaken" immobilized victims of a rare disease. Leonard was the first patient to receive this untested treatment. His awakening, filled with awe, fear and enthusiasm, leads, as it were, to the second birth of Sayer himself, as the patient discovers for himself and the doctor the simple joys of life. Encouraged by Leonard's miraculous recovery, Sayer gives the medicine to other patients.

This film is simply mesmerizing. Very bright, unusual.

Probably one of Williams' few negative roles.

A young, charismatic Irish guitarist and an American cellist from a prestigious family fell in love with each other. After a magical meeting in New York, circumstances turn out to be stronger than them, and they are forced to separate. The born child, August Rush, by an equally unfortunate coincidence ends up in one of the New York shelters. Now, under the tutelage of a mysterious stranger, he plays on the streets of New York and tries to find the parents he has never met using his exceptional musical gift.

The film also starred Freddie Highmore (the main character, he simply amazed me with his acting, the boy was very natural in the frame),

Keri Russell and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, which is why I actually watched this film.

On August 11, 2014, the world learned of the death of Robin Williams. His body was found with a belt around his neck, and an examination showed that the actor committed suicide. A toxicological examination conducted on November 7 showed a complete absence of alcohol and drugs in the actor’s blood. However, the combination of medications that Robin Williams took for Parkinson's disease could cause suicidal thoughts, which, together with chronic depression, became the cause of suicide.

In an interview in the fall of 2015, the actor’s widow said that Robin clearly imagined that in a few years the disease would kill his brain. He was diagnosed with a rare form of Parkinson's disease, Lewy body dementia. Realizing that he was losing his mind, Robin simply could not allow himself to gradually fade away, turning into a helpless, crazy old man.

Famous comedian commits suicide due to financial problems
