Gaft was immediately taken to the Mossovet Theater (1957-1958). Dmitry Zhuravlev provided patronage to the young artist. Valentin fled from there a year later: almost no roles were offered, and those that were given were very small.

Erast Garin helped Gaft get a job at the Satire Theater. Here the artist played the Scientist in the production of “Shadow”. Then he moved to the Moscow Drama Theater. Performed roles in the plays: “Love’s Labour’s Lost”, “The Third Head”, “Barba”, “The Argonauts”, “The Lady’s Visit”.

In 1964-1966. - works at the Lenin Komsomol Theater. Plays Evdokimov in “104 Pages about Love”, Marquise d'Orsigny in “Molière”. Finally, the young actor learned what audience recognition was. Gaft was filled with joy and excitement as they accompanied his scenes with thunderous applause.
