Valery Zolotukhin: the ugly actor was adored by women

Valery Zolotukhin, a famous Soviet-Russian theater and film actor, came to the profession after overcoming a serious illness. He became famous not only for his legendary roles, but also for his scandalous love affairs, which he did not hide from his wives and journalists. Zolotukhin stood at the origins of the creation of Taganka and, together with it, experienced its glory and fall.

Valery was born in the Altai village of Bystry Istok on June 21, 1941 in the family of the chairman of the collective farm Sergei Illarionovich and Matryona Fedoseevna Zolotukhin . The child’s artistic abilities manifested themselves before he began to realize himself: from the age of 3, the boy “earned money” by singing: he sang songs he heard from his mother, for which his fellow villagers treated him to honey and milk.

At the age of 6 years, he received a knee injury (fell from the stairs from a height of the 2nd floor), which led to the development of osteomyelitis. The boy spent 3 years of his life bedridden in a tuberculosis sanatorium far from his parents. Then he began to walk on crutches, which he got rid of only in his senior year, thanks to an iron will and a great desire to become an actor. But the limp remained for life.

How Moscow circus clown Alexei Polozov intervened in Zolotukhin’s fate

One day, the famous Moscow clown Alexey Polozov and his troupe came to the village on tour. Valera was asked to play along with him at the performance. Although the young man did not do what was required of him, Polozov saw undoubted talent in him and advised him to become an actor. The artist did not limit himself to just advice, but provided real help to the future star - he went to the local district party committee and agreed that upon graduation Valery would be given a passport (at that time villagers were not given documents in hand)

In 1958, Zolotukhin arrived in Moscow and immediately entered GITIS in the department of musical comedy in the workshop of Irina Anisimova-Wulf . After graduation, on the recommendation of his teacher, Valery was invited to the Mossovet Theater (from the first year she told the talented student that his place was in drama). But he served there for only a year - after seeing a performance at the Taganka Theater directed by Yuri Lyubimov “The Good Man from Szechwan,” Zolotukhin decided to get to “Taganka” at all costs.

The young actor and his wife, classmate Nina Shatskaya (they got married in their last year at the institute) appeared to artistic director Yuri Lyubimov , and he accepted both of them into his troupe.

Zolotukhin devoted almost 50 years to this theater, on the stage of which he played with the most outstanding actors of that time - Vladimir Vysotsky , Alla Demidova , Nikolai Gubenko , Zhanna Bolotova , Leonid Filatov (Shatskaya would leave Taganka after its split in 1992, following Filatov: their long-term secret romance will end in marriage in the early 80s).

Valeria had a long-term friendship with Vladimir Vysotsky, which did not exclude rivalry between them. One day Lyubimov offered Zolotukhin the main role in Hamlet, played by Vysotsky. Due to Vladimir's frequent trips abroad, the artistic director decided to create a second cast for this performance. And Zolotukhin, to everyone’s indignation, agreed, although he knew that Vysotsky would be offended by such an act.

As a result, Valery never played Hamlet, Vysotsky soon forgave him, but Vladimir’s fans gave Zolotukhin real persecution. They learned about this story from a documentary film by Eldar Ryazanov, which the director dedicated to the theatrical work of the bard. According to Zolotukhin, for a long time he received threatening letters and all sorts of disgusting packages.

Valery Sergeevich’s theatrical destiny was successful: he would become one of the leading artists of the troupe, and in the last years of his life he would head Taganka.

Biography of Valery Zolotukhin

In 1964 he moved to the Taganka Theater. On the Taganka stage, Zolotukhin played many diverse roles, including Wang the Water-Carrier (“The Good Man from Szechwan”), Grushnitsky (“Hero of Our Time”), Andrei Nakhodka (“Mother”), Glebov (“House on the Embankment”), Grigory Otrepyev (“Boris Godunov”), Fyodor Fomich Kuzkin (“Zhivoy”), Zhivago (“Doctor Zhivago”), Marquis de Sade (“Marat and the Marquis de Sade”).

In the play “A Feast during the Plague” Zolotukhin played four roles at once - the Duke, Don Juan, Faust and Mephistopheles.

In 1965, Valery Zolotukhin acted in films for the first time, playing Pyotr Trofimov in the historical adventure film “Package”. The role of Trofimov brought the actor his first fame.

The film “Master of the Taiga” (1968), where the actor played the district police officer Serezhkin, had great audience success. In this film, Zolotukhin worked in tandem with his friend Vladimir Vysotsky.

In 1971, the musical comedy about the civil war “Bumbarash” was released, in which the actor played the main role and performed songs based on the poems of Yuli Kim. The film brought Zolotukhin enormous popularity and became his “calling card” for many years.

In the same year, he starred in the second film of the trilogy, which began with “Master of the Taiga” - the detective story “Missing Witness”.

Other films of the 1970s with Zolotukhin’s participation include “The Shores” (1973), “Every Day of Doctor Kalinnikova” (1973), “Tsarevich Prosha” (1974), “The Tale of How Tsar Peter the Arap Married” (1976) , the third film in the trilogy about Vasily Serezhkin “Preliminary Investigation” (1978).

In 1979, the television series “Little Tragedies” was released, in which Zolotukhin played Mozart.

In the 1980s, Valery Zolotukhin continued to actively act in films. Among the films released at this time are “In Broad Daylight” (1983), “And Along Came Bumbo” (1984), “The Man with the Accordion” (1985).

In the 1990s, Zolotukhin appeared in few films. In the 2000s, the actor again began to appear on film and television screens. It started with the series “Plot” (2003), in which Zolotukhin, skillfully combining comic and dramatic colors, played an old man nicknamed Khali-Gali. In the films “Night Watch” (2004) and “Day Watch” (2005) he played the role of an old vampire.

In 2005, a film adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel “The Master and Margarita” directed by Vladimir Bortko was released, in which Zolotukhin starred in the role of Bosogo.

In 2009, the film “Black Lightning” was released, in which he played the role of inventor Perepelkin. In 2012, the actor starred in the film “Brigade: The Heir,” a continuation of the cult 2002 series.

In total, during his acting career, Valery Zolotukhin starred in more than 80 films.

The actor participated in the dubbing of many famous films, including “12 Chairs,” where he sang the song “There, Among the Pampas” for Ostap Bender, the film “Ivan Vasilyevich Changes His Profession,” where Zolotukhin sang the song “Conversation with Happiness” (“Suddenly, like in a fairy tale, the door creaked...") for Leonid Kuravlev's hero Georges Miloslavsky.

In 2003, Zolotukhin became artistic director of the Altai Youth Theater in Barnaul.

How did Zolotukhin’s film career develop?

Valery became famous, as usual, thanks to cinema and he didn’t have to wait long. Already the debut role of the young fighter Petya Trofimov in the war film directed by Vladimir Nazarov “Package” (1965) brought the actor all-Union fame - the film received the Grand Prix at the International Film Festival in Prague.

This was followed by another successful work in the eccentric military comedy “Intervention” (1968), where Zolotukhin and Vysotsky starred in the leading roles. But viewers were able to see it only 19 years later - officials considered the painting a mockery of the images of the Bolsheviks and put it on the shelf.

Undoubtedly, the best role in the actor’s filmography will be the main role of Bumbarash in the tragicomedy of the same name directed by Nikolai Rasheev and Abram Naroditsky (1971). The film, based on the stories of Arkady Gaidar about the civil war, tells the story of the fate of a simple village guy who, having returned from the front to native village, encounters a White Guard gang.

The main character was supposed to be played by Mikhail Kononov , but Valery asked for an audition and won the hearts of the directors when, at Rasheev’s request, he sang a song, accompanying himself on the harmonica. In addition to the excellent cast - Yuri Smirnov , Natalya Dmitrieva , Ekaterina Vasilyeva , Lev Durov , Roman Tkachuk , etc., the success of the film was facilitated by the wonderful songs of the composer Vladimir Dashkevich to the verses of Yuli Kim . Zolotukhin performed all of Bumbarash's songs himself (after which the actor was often invited to dub musical compositions in various films).

The film, enthusiastically received by Soviet viewers, could have suffered the same fate as “Intervention” - again the leadership saw in it a mockery of the ideals of the revolution. Only thanks to the intercession of Arkady Gaidar’s son, Timur Gaidar , a famous writer and journalist, “Bumbarash” saw the light of day.

Among Zolotukhin’s most successful works are the roles of policeman Serezhkin in “The Master of the Taiga” , Kolya Kasatkin in “The One” (in both films he starred with Vladimir Vysotsky), Ben Gunn in “Treasure Island” , Ivan Kivrin in “Sorcerers” , a vampire in “Day ” and “Night Watch” , Nikanor Bosogo in “The Master and Margarita” , etc.

The actor’s last film was a modern film adaptation of Gogol’s story “Viy” directed by Oleg Stepchenko, where Zolotukhin starred in the small role of Yavtukh (in my opinion, this “work” has nothing to do with Gogol or art). Valery, who was already ill during filming, played perfectly. The premiere took place in 2014, after his death.

Illness and death

The artist’s deteriorating health was first noticed in early 2012. After several hospitalizations, he was re-examined and diagnosed with glioblastoma. At the beginning of March 2013, Zolotukhin was hospitalized again. The artist ended up in intensive care, where he was put into a medically induced coma.

On March 30, 2013, Valery Zolotukhin died from complications caused by a brain tumor. On April 5, Zolotukhin was buried in his native village near the temple built at his expense.

The scandalous personal life of the famous Zolotukhin

Despite the fact that the actor could not be called handsome, he was famous for his love affairs. Valery's first wife was actress Nina Shatskaya, whom he married at the age of 22. The marriage, in which the couple had a son Denis (who later became a priest and father of six children), lasted quite a long time - 19 years, but was happy only in the first years.

Valery was not known for his fidelity, and Nina spent most of their life together in a love affair with Leonid Filatov, a theater colleague. The divorce became a liberation for both: Shatskaya would marry Filatov, and Zolotukhin would marry his mistress Tamara Guseva , who was expecting a child from him. Their romance lasted 5 years.

The actor met Tamara on the set of the film “The Only One,” where she worked as an assistant director. The husband and small child could not stop the woman in love. In 1978, Tamara became Zolotukhin’s second official wife and moved from Leningrad to Moscow. Daughter Katya remained in the care of her husband's sister.

Soon the Zolotukhins had a son, Sergei . For some time, an idyll reigned between them, but Valery could not remain faithful to one woman for long. Numerous novels began, which the husband did not particularly try to hide from Tamara. From the age of 17, he kept diaries in which he described everything that happened to him, and left his manuscripts in the most prominent places.

Of course, the wife periodically became acquainted with the actor’s love affairs, created scandals, threatened to leave, but... forgave him. By the way, Zolotukhin will subsequently publish his diaries (after which many of the unflattering people he mentioned will hate him), and will also publish several fiction and journalistic books.

Tamara probably developed immunity to her husband’s infidelities, because when in 2004, 30-year-old Taganka actress Irina Lindt Ivan from 63-year-old Zolotukhin , she did not take any decisive measures (or maybe she simply had nowhere to go) to leave - Tamara had neither housing nor work). Valery began to live with two families and felt quite comfortable.

And after 3 years, the Zolotukhins suffered a heavy loss: their 27-year-old son Sergei voluntarily passed away (he made his first unsuccessful attempt at the age of 18). Perhaps the reason for this was the collapse of the rock band in which he was a drummer. Valery obtained permission to perform the funeral service for his son, although this was prohibited according to Orthodox canons. The Christian ceremony was performed by Father Dionysius, Zolotukhin’s eldest son (Denis).

Despite his lifestyle (numerous love affairs and a penchant for alcohol), Valery was a believer. For 10 years he collected funds for the construction of a temple in his native village. The new church was built on the site of the old one, which was destroyed by order of his father when he was the chairman of the collective farm.

Personal life

The actor's first love was his classmate Nina Shatskaya. The girl was an unattainable star, especially for a simple provincial. But Valery literally lost his head. And he managed to win the favor of the blond beauty.

In this marriage a son, Denis, was born. If not for Zolotukhin’s love of love, the family would not have broken up, but he could not resist another affair.

As a result, Valery Sergeevich’s son was actually raised by actor Leonid Filatov, who became support and support for Shatskaya.

Zolotukhin hid his affair with violinist Tamara for a long time. They met in secret and suffered greatly. In the end, Valery could not stand it and confessed everything to his wife. He and Tamara were able to get married, and Zolotukhin had another son, Sergei.

The actor's affection for his second wife was very strong. Even when the love passed, and the elderly Zolotukhin became interested in the young actress Irina Lindt, he did not get a divorce.

He told his mistress that she would have to put up with the fact that he would not leave his wife. Tamara was aware of all her husband’s adventures. Including thanks to the diary that the artist kept all his life (and never hid its contents from his family). But the wife tolerated Zolotukhin’s affair on the side, and even when Lindt gave birth to Valery Sergeevich’s third son, Vanya, Tamara did not leave the actor.

And when a tragedy happened in their family - their common son Sergei died voluntarily, grief brought Valery and Tamara even closer together.

Irina Lindt accepted the actor’s conditions. She always waited for Valery Sergeevich to devote time to his legal wife, and then come to them with his son.

Why Zolotukhin took the post of artistic director of Taganka and what role did Lyubimov’s wife play in this?

Zolotukhin’s entire life was connected with Taganka, within whose walls many dramatic events took place: the dismissal of artistic director Yuri Lyubimov and the appointment of Anatoly Efros in his place. The split of the theater after Lyubimov’s return, the confrontation between the remaining actors and the artistic director, who, with his management methods, created an unbearable situation in the creative team.

Not the least role, according to Zolotukhin, was played by the manager’s wife, Katalin Lyubimova, in the conflict. Yuri Petrovich met her in 1976 during a tour in Budapest: the 29-year-old Hungarian accompanied him as a translator. The romance that began in Hungary continued in the Soviet Union - Katalin managed to be sent there as a journalist. Marriage did not stop her.

After 2 years, she became Lyubimov’s official wife, and soon gave birth to 62-year-old Yuri Petrovich a son. When the child grew up, Lyubimov made his wife his deputy. A journalist by profession, she did not understand the economics and accounting necessary to perform such a serious position, not to mention the fact that she had nothing to do with art. Lyubimov did not react to the actors’ complaints about Katalin’s boorish behavior, who allowed herself to lecture and insult the actors (often turning to profanity). He fell completely under the influence of his wife.

Once on tour in Greece, Katalin hit actor Timur Slavin , who was very drunk. He responded with a slap in the face, after which a fight broke out between him and Lyubimov. Slavin was fired from the theater.

The situation reached its climax on tour in the Czech Republic. Quite by accident, the actors found out that the Czechs had extorted a fee for them, which the Lyubimovs were not going to give them. A huge scandal broke out. After Lyubimov’s publicly spoken words: “Give the money to this cattle,” his wife threw an envelope with money in the actors’ faces.

Yuri Petrovich resigned. In 2011, the position of director and artistic director of Taganka was taken by Valery Zolotukhin, but remained in this post for less than 2 years - he was forced to leave for health reasons. Perhaps if Valery Sergeevich had been given more time, he would have been able to revive the theater. According to Zolotukhin, “the troupe did not play for years, but did step dance and sang in the choir.”

One of the greatest and outstanding theater and film actors from the village of Stary Istok, Valery Sergeevich Zolotukhin, comes from an ordinary peasant family, born on June 21, 1941. The last year of life, the cause of Zolotukhin’s death

In the last year of Valery Petrovich’s life, his health began to rapidly deteriorate: chronic fatigue, mood swings and memory loss, as it turned out, were caused by an already developed brain tumor. Sparing Zolotukhin, Tamara and Irina hid the truth from him, so the dying actor had no doubt about his recovery and made plans for the future. In the face of common grief, the women united. When Zolotukhin was hospitalized, they visited the patient every day and discussed plans for possible treatment among themselves...
