Wedding in Cuba: a beautiful way to declare your love

Beautiful and freedom-loving Cuba has always attracted dreamers and romantics. The local culture is covered in impressive legends about heroes and revolutionaries, nature amazes with its riot of colors and abundance of sun, and the hot Cuban air seems to be saturated with hot and fiery Latin American music. It is not surprising that this beautiful island state, washed by the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, is preferred by many couples going on a romantic trip.

Recently, not just tours for two to hot Cuba, but also wedding ceremonies in this country have become especially popular. For a long time, Cuba was a rather closed country, but today it hospitably and friendly welcomes travelers from other countries, including those whose cherished dream is a wedding in Cuba. You will learn about all the intricacies of organizing a wedding ceremony in Cuba from this article.

Organizational matters

If you want to make your marriage truly special, original and memorable, then a wedding in Cuba is probably right for you. Organizing such a celebration on your own is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance. Unlike other popular “wedding” destinations (Bali, the Dominican Republic and the Maldives), a marriage in Cuba can be officially registered on all legal grounds.

In this case, the organization of the celebration is undertaken by the host party (as a rule, this is the hotel where the newlyweds stay). This is a very common practice in Cuba, so each hotel has extensive experience in conducting such ceremonies. While planning your wedding, the hotel staff who will be involved in the celebration will discuss with you all the details of the upcoming event. Depending on your wishes, tastes and financial capabilities, you can choose either a small light buffet with champagne for several guests, or a larger and noisier celebration to which you will invite all your friends and family. Wedding organizers will take care of all stages of preparation - from decorating the hall to making the birthday cake. Cubans approach such celebrations with special inspiration, so you will see for yourself how fun and fiery your wedding in Cuba will be. The photos presented here show several interesting moments from such ceremonies.

If you wish, you can hold not only an official ceremony, but also a wedding ceremony. For several years now, there has been an Orthodox church in Havana where you can get married in a church. Wedding ceremonies are held on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays (excluding religious holidays). In order to get married in Cuba, you will need to have a marriage stamp in your passport. We advise you to first hold an official wedding ceremony, and the next day get married in an Orthodox cathedral.

What documents will be needed?

  • The most difficult stage of preparation is, of course, collecting the necessary documents. In addition to valid foreign passports, you will need to present your birth certificates, as well as certificates from the registry office confirming that there are no obstacles to marriage.
  • All these documents must be translated into Spanish and certified by a notary. If you are preparing a wedding not on your own, but through a travel agency, usually the tour operator takes care of all these aspects. However, as practice shows, collecting the necessary documents is not such a difficult task, and you can handle it yourself.

A couple of nuances

The wedding ceremony itself is conducted in Spanish. If you do not speak Spanish, the hotel can provide you with a qualified translator for a fee.

According to current Cuban law, the wedding ceremony can take place no earlier than three days after the bride and groom arrive in the country.

Don't forget to take this fact into account when you plan the timing of your upcoming trip and the date of the ceremony.

How to stay on budget

The cost of a wedding ceremony in Cuba will depend on whether it is official or symbolic, on the location and time of the ceremony, the availability of additional services, and the presence of guests.

When calculating your budget, consider the following expenses:

  • preparation of documents for concluding an official marriage (if the wedding is symbolic, this item is excluded);
  • flights;
  • accommodation;
  • transfer to and from the wedding venue;
  • organizing a wedding in Cuba;
  • decorating the place of celebration;
  • services of witnesses (if required), coordinator;
  • bride's bouquet and groom's boutonniere;
  • hairstyle, manicure, makeup, other procedures (if required);
  • organization of a wedding banquet/dinner for two;
  • photo and video shooting;
  • additional services (host, musical accompaniment, dancers, etc.).

The price for a Cuban wedding ranges from 3 thousand dollars and above, depending on the wishes of the bride and groom.

Symbolic wedding

If you don’t want to take on the hassle of completing the necessary documents and complying with all the bureaucratic rules, you have another option - a symbolic wedding in Cuba. Such a ceremony retains all the romantic spirit and special atmosphere, but at the same time does not require following formal requirements. Today, many newlyweds prefer just this option - to enter into an official marriage in Russia, and celebrate this solemn event in Cuba. Local hotels organize very impressive and beautiful symbolic ceremonies, which are not inferior in their effectiveness and romance to official weddings.

We invite you to see how beautiful and spectacular such a wedding in Cuba can be. The video is clear evidence that symbolic weddings are in no way inferior to official ones. This is a great option for those who want to have a special and unusual wedding, but do not like bureaucratic delays.

Where to celebrate the holiday

This wonderful Caribbean island is perfect for organizing a wedding and honeymoon. In any corner of it you will find a place that you will like. But here are a few locations that are popular among newlywed tourists.

Old Havana

A wedding ceremony in the historical center of Havana, the capital of Cuba, will be original and filled with the atmosphere of history. Since its construction (16th century), practically nothing has changed there. You will immerse yourself in the colonial era, wander along the narrow cobbled streets, admire ancient houses and historical monuments. There are about 1000 attractions here, so the photo session will be varied and interesting. Visit the Capitol, the Presidential Palace, and the iconic Malecon.

City of Varadero

Located on the Hicacos Peninsula. The resort has a 20-kilometer sandy beach. Beaches washed by the waves of the Atlantic Ocean, numerous hotels and restaurants - here you will deeply breathe in the air of Liberty Island, enjoy each other and a wonderful holiday. If you are planning a wedding in Cuba at a hotel, you can organize an official or symbolic wedding ceremony on the beach, in the garden or in a specially equipped gazebo. Visit Ambrosio Cave, famous for its rock paintings, walk through the Varaikakos protected area, touch a 500-year-old cactus - and your marriage will be just as long-lasting.

Honeymoon

Hot and sunny Cuba is a real tropical paradise. Here you can not only celebrate your marriage, but also spend an unforgettable honeymoon. This beautiful island has all the possibilities for a wonderful holiday. Sunny snow-white beaches, palm trees, exotic flowers and plants - this environment is the best way to promote a romantic mood. If you and your significant other don’t like a relaxing beach holiday, you have the chance to have an active holiday on your honeymoon, for example, go diving.

Financial side

Getting married in Cuba is, of course, very beautiful and touching. But such a celebration will require certain financial investments from you. You will have to spend money on registration and notarized translation of documents, on air tickets for yourself and guests, and hotel accommodation. The host party, which will be involved in all stages of preparing and holding your wedding, will take a certain amount from you.

To be fair, despite all these costs, getting married in Cuba can be quite democratic and affordable. You don’t have to gather a hundred guests for the celebration; if you wish, you can organize a modest but very beautiful ceremony for several friends and relatives. Or maybe you even want to get married just the two of you, in a very romantic atmosphere.

How to organize?

Following the reset of Cuba-American relations in 2021, the country has become more open to tourists. Many air routes have appeared, and cruise ships from different countries regularly arrive at the port.

Getting around the island

You can travel within the country:

  • to hitchhike . Legalized by the authorities and a very interesting way to travel. All retro cars are included in the list of national treasures and actively work for the benefit of the country, meeting and escorting tourists around the city. The authorities have assigned employees who are on duty in places where tourists and the local population actively gather. These employees wear sand-colored uniforms. They brake the cars and put passengers into them. You pay the employee a service fee and they put you in the car. At the same time, you do not pay the driver anything else;
  • by rail . The most traditional way of moving around the country, used by most of the local population;
  • by bus . Public transport is divided into two categories: for local residents and foreign tourists. Buses for the former are simpler and cheaper. There are only a few places allocated for tourists. The state provides more comfortable and expensive buses for foreigners to travel around the city;
  • on a bicycle . You can rent or bring your own;
  • by taxi . The authorities actively support the influx of tourists and the increase in the number of jobs, which is why yellow taxis can be seen throughout the country;
  • by plane . Air travel saves a lot of time, but will require large financial costs;
  • by car (rental) . The most practical way to travel (from $50 per day) Requires a driver's license with an international application.

Important! According to traffic regulations in the Caribbean countries (including Cuba), it is prohibited to drive a car with headlights on during daylight hours.

Accommodation

You can arrange your stay through reputable booking sites. Such as booking.com , roomguru.ru , Hotel Look or Airbnb .

Important! You should only trust bookings to trusted resources so as not to give money away to scammers.

Experienced tourists can travel to Cuba without advance reservations, but it is worth researching local hotels, hostels, campsites and other available accommodation options in advance so that there is an alternative if there is a high demand for accommodation.

The cheapest option for rental housing on the island is “casa particular” (casa particular, private house) . Housing is a small room in an apartment. Information about them can be found right on the doors of houses or from locals who meet tourists at the airport, train station or port.

The most economical option for accommodation in Cuba is to rent a tent , set it up yourself and spend the night in the camping area (campismo).

Romantic wedding on the other side of the world

An abundance of sun, a beautiful azure sea, a warm salty wind, fiery music, passionate Latin American dances - all this will be given to you by a wedding in Cuba. Reviews from newlyweds who decided to take such a bold romantic step are mostly very warm and enthusiastic:

  • “We celebrated our wedding in Cuba. We've been dreaming about this for a long time and finally decided to do it. The organization is very good. The hotel specially assigned us a Russian-speaking organizer, so it was easy to solve all problems. The package included decorations, a gala dinner, music, cake and a photo shoot. Everything is at the highest level, there are no complaints about the hotel. We had a very intimate, small ceremony for six guests. Everything was very sweet and touching” (Anna).
  • “We had a hot Cuban wedding in the middle of winter. It was a rather tiring road, first a long flight, then the journey from the airport to the hotel. My wife and I were a little tired, so we arrived at the hotel and went straight to bed. The next day, preparations for the wedding began. The staff is very helpful, the service is good. However, several times there were problems due to the language barrier: we do not speak Spanish, and in our hotel not all the staff understood English. The ceremony itself went smoothly. We celebrated on the beach, they made a beautiful arch for us, and in general the decoration was excellent. The rain that started towards the end of the holiday spoiled the mood a little. But overall we are very satisfied and happy” (Sergey).
  • “We just returned from our honeymoon to Cuba. I am still impressed - everything is very romantic and beautiful. If you want to celebrate your wedding in an unusual way, I recommend it to everyone” (Svetlana).

If you also want to get joyful emotions and have an unusual wedding, go to Cuba. A luxurious wedding in a beautiful hotel, a secluded celebration on a small green island or a touching and romantic ceremony right on the seashore - in any case, you will receive unforgettable emotions from such a wonderful celebration.

Wedding in Cuba. Reflections and practical advice

Considering that, from a financial point of view, a wedding in Cuba will be approximately equal to a wedding in Moscow with a banquet and a limousine (but for this money you also get a honeymoon, plus the exoticism of the country and wonderful memories), in my opinion, this is an excellent alternative to a winter wedding in Russia.

The coldest months in Cuba are November-January. It must be said that the weather has been set since mid-January. The cold period in Cuba is characterized not by constantly cold weather, but by its frequent changes. Today it may be sunny, +25, and tomorrow +16, strong wind and rain. However, the next day will delight you with sunshine again. The weather also differs depending on which side of Liberty Island you are on. The shores of the Caribbean Sea are more stable and less windy. The Atlantic is more unpredictable (the popular resort of Varadero is located on the Atlantic coast). Cold weather for Cubans is a reason for polite conversations. Any passerby can tell you frio (cold). Well, you can also answer him frio.

The weather on the Caribbean Sea (Trinidad, Cenfuegos) pleases with greater consistency. During the filming of the love story of the Estonian couple, there was beautiful sunshine, but filming at sunset did not work out due to the fact that the sun was hidden behind a cloud and there was no magical sunset light, for which we postponed the second part of the filming until the evening. There's no guessing here.

If you are planning a wedding in Cuba, ask if it can be organized in some place other than Varadero. I know that weddings are also organized in Cayo Largo (but it depends on the specific operator). Because if this is possible with your operator, then it will be much more interesting, exotic and economical than Varadero. After all, in addition to Varadero, there are many more wonderful places that are less reminiscent of reservations for tourists than Varadero.

Varadero is good for its tourist infrastructure and a huge number of hotels. But this is also its disadvantage. There are quite a large number of places for a walk and a photo shoot: the territory of the hotel and the hotel beach, the city beach of Varadero (often better than the hotel beach - few people, a wide strip of white fine sand), a monument to Don Quixote and Sancho Panzo, the Dupont house and golf club, a city park . However, all this diversity has a drawback: all the other couples who got married in Cuba have photos from the same places.

What, from my point of view, is it worth spending money on if you decide to have a wedding in Cuba:

- in a retro car - the feeling of driving such a car is indescribable, and besides, a car with an open top gives an extraordinary feeling of affordable luxury and cool photos. You can easily ask the driver to stop anywhere to take pictures. Don't forget a light scarf for your head (if your hairstyle is difficult to fix), a bottle of water and sunglasses.

— for a yacht ride at sunset. Wonderful views and beautiful photos are guaranteed. Plus, your friends can enjoy it too. Warm sea wind, helpful captain, who asks which side to turn the yacht towards sunset so that the photographer can work effectively. Don't forget something warm with you - a jacket, a scarf. And don't forget the photographer?)

- to your photographer . Local photographers can certainly photograph your wedding, but the quality is so low that any guest with a point-and-shoot camera will do the same. The photos are not processed at all, photographers don’t care at all what you look like in the photo, whether you have a double chin in the photo they give you, whether you have a visible bruise on your leg, etc. The video from a local videographer is also of about the same level - a standard video created from a template, shot on an amateur camera without a tripod. The lack of color correction and the presence of a huge number of vignettes, hearts and other old-fashioned elements sometimes produces an exclusively comic effect.

- for an additional paid day for the photographer after filming. Perhaps you will be unlucky with the weather and you will be able to shoot at least something on a free day (by agreement with the photographer).

— to film a love story in another city. There are several wonderful towns near Varadero where you can film an interesting love story - these are Matanzas and Cardenas. If you rent a car, you will not spend money on a taxi and will be free to move around. The ideal place for a multi-plan session is, of course, Havana. You can get to Havana by car in a couple of hours.

If you take one photographer with you for several couples, discuss the shooting locations during the walk in advance so that they are as different as possible and the photographer is not forced to jump over his head in an attempt not to repeat yesterday’s shooting.

If you hire a photographer for several couples, plan a day of rest for him. The fatigue of a professional photographer, in principle, does not affect the average quality of his work, but from a purely human perspective it is reasonable.

Practical advice for those who are interested in details

- the euro rules. 1 euro is equal to 1.29 cookies (January 2010). It is better to change the day in Internacional banks (better rate) When exchanging dollars, a commission of 20% is taken, so at a nominal rate of 1 $ = 1 CUC, the real rate is 1 CUC = 0.8 dollars

-Between Kasa and the hotel, I definitely choose Kasa. Casa Particular. All houses offered for rent have an obscure blue (green) icon on the door with the inscription Arrendador Divisa. The ideal option for me is a separate entrance, on the second floor, with a balcony or terrace. Distinguish between hostels and cash desks. A hostel in Cuba is something like a boarding house with one common hall and a couple of rooms for two for tourists with a toilet and shower, it gives the impression of a communal apartment. Casa is a completely independent room with a separate entrance.

- casa particular (private mini-hotels with 2 rooms with two beds, shower, toilet, hot water, air conditioning, balcony or terrace) for 10-15 cookies - this is a myth. The owners of the cash register keep their prices and do not try to go down. It is unlikely that you will be able to negotiate for a smaller amount (especially if you do not speak Spanish). It’s possible to rent a cash register in any city for 25 cookies of a very good standard. Breakfast 2-4 cookies per person, 4-course lunch - 7-9 cookies (lunch and breakfast are enough for the whole day) Every month the owner of the cash register pays a tax of 200 cookies to the state, regardless of the season.

-if you plan to get out of Varadero, it is better to know at least minimal Spanish or have a phrasebook with you. Very few people speak English in Cuba. And then they insert 3-10 words that they know into Spanish speech. Usually nothing is clear because Spanish and English have nothing in common. However, after 3 weeks of travel, we mastered the minimum required vocabulary and could talk in a store, with cash register owners, and even understand the menu in a restaurant in Spanish

-if you plan to rent a car, book it in advance. Calculate car costs from 80 CUC per day + deposit 200 euros. In Varadero, rental prices are 1.2-1.5 times higher than in the country as a whole. There are really few gas stations. Before planning a long trip, look on the map where gas stations are located. And even then, not all gas stations will refuel your rented car, because... Most local motorists drive on 83 gasoline, which cannot be used to fill up a rental car, or the gas stations are intended for trucks and buses. A liter of gasoline (A94) = 1.1 cu.

-take adapters for American sockets and tees if you are a photographer. Hotels and hotels have 220 volt outlets. But they are disastrously few. As a photographer, I missed it. I need to charge for filming every day - 2 batteries for the camera, 2 sets of batteries for the flash, video light. + Every evening I uploaded photos to an external hard drive (which also plugs into an outlet like a laptop).

-Internet in Cuba costs 6 cookies per hour. You can buy a card and use it as needed in public Internet centers.

-take souvenirs with you for the maids and housewives. Cosmetics (mascara, eye shadow, glitter), fishnet tights are very popular among women. In general, 1 cookie a day will be a gift for all of them.

-don't trust travel agencies. They will assure you that in Varadero you can only get to a hotel if you have an agency reservation and that it is cheaper through them. Lies. If there are free places, you will be accommodated without any problems.

-bring a sweater and jacket with you - evenings in winter, depending on the location, can be very cold and windy. It was scary to look at tourists in T-shirts, wrapped in thin scarves and sandals, when you yourself were walking in jeans, a jacket and sneakers. With a hood on your head?)

Havana is simply the perfect place for a photo shoot. Here you can see traditional Cuban Havana with laundry hanging on the toilets, with dilapidated buildings with peeling plaster, behind the unassuming appearance of which are hidden memories of the colonial capital of the 19th century, as well as the tourist, restored, chic capital, rebuilt by the best architects of past centuries. Here history looks at you at every turn, here musicians light a fire in your heart.

On the embankment there is an amazing phenomenon - a huge Orthodox church, which was donated by Cuba to Orthodox Russians who have been living in the capital of Cuba for many years. Father Vyacheslav from Krasnoyarsk serves in a church with a parish of 10 people and four novices. The wedding costs 200 cookies. It is enough to go there a few days in advance for the proposed wedding date (make sure in advance that it does not fall on one of the many posts) and agree on the date of the ceremony and its time.

Next to the church there is a wonderful restaurant called Los Marinos, where you can have a very tasty and economical meal - a set lunch of salad, natural juice, meat and side dish plus coffee or tea to choose from costs 4.90 CUC. After the wedding, it’s worth taking a ride in a retro car with open-top (+40 CUC) or on a horse-drawn carriage (20 CUC) around Havana, stroll through the historical center, stop by one of the many Havana beaches so that the photo session of the celebration will harmoniously end at sunset against the backdrop of the sea and white sand.

Part of a photo shoot in Havana can also be a visit to El Floridita - a restaurant where Ernest Hemingway loved to drink daiquiris, a restaurant on the roof of the Ambos Mundos hotel, where the same Hemingway lived, and where a wonderful view of old Havana opens up in order to sip a delicious cocktail of the same name 3 cookies each.

Despite the generally accepted opinion that the capital is always more expensive than the province, in Cuba this is not entirely true. The most expensive place is Varadero. There, taxis are incredibly expensive compared to the rest of Cuba, and drinks and food in restaurants are also much more expensive. In Havana you can eat quite tasty food cheaper than in a provincial tourist city. If lunch per person in Trinidad cost us from 7 cookies (at the cash register) to 14 in a restaurant, then in Havana we had lunch for 5 cookies (set lunch with drinks).

If you are planning a trip to Cuba, then any small town is a great option for a photo shoot. Of those we visited, I would highlight Trinidad and Vinales. Trinidad is an old little town. It delights with traditional architecture, pretty beaches and vibrant nightlife. Viñales is basically a village, but a pretty one. An hour's drive away there are stunning beaches on Cayo Jutias with mangrove islets and very photographic dead wood on the white sand of the beach. You can find completely secluded corners of stunning beauty.

And one more thing... this is all my personal point of view, it may not coincide with yours?)
