The addition to the Malikov family happened at the very height of the war, at the beginning of July 1943. The father of the baby, who was named Yurik, Fedor, was demobilized after being seriously wounded, so the young mother, Raisa, was not alone in caring for her newborn son. Yura spent his childhood in the Rostov region, on the Chebotovka farmstead - it was there that the future artist grew up until the age of eleven, absorbing his father’s stories about the war and learning from him to play the balalaika, accordion and accordion.
As for the rest, besides the musical pursuits and abilities that the boy discovered in early childhood (however, despite this, Yura did not show much love for music in childhood), he lived freely and freely, like all the village children. Moving. Youth
In the fifty-fourth year of the last century, the Malikov family moved to the town of Chekhov near Moscow, where they settled. Yurik went to school, quickly got used to it and made new friends, with whom already at such a young age (he was 11-12 years old at that time) he “put together” his first group - a trio of accordionists. In this composition, the guys performed at all school and amateur evenings until the very end of secondary general education.
After graduating from school, Yuri didn’t think long about where to go - he went to the industrial technical school in Podolsk. However, he did not give up his music studies. By that time, the young man could play three musical instruments; as they say now, he was already a multi-instrumentalist. Therefore, without hesitation, he was accepted into the technical school’s brass band.
Around the same time, as you can learn from the biography of Yuri Malikov, a fateful acquaintance happened in his life. The very same thing, thanks to which the love of music settled in his heart forever. And this acquaintance was... with the double bass. Previously, Yuri, a simple farm boy, had neither seen nor heard of such an instrument. And then I watched one movie and, as they say, disappeared. I literally fell head over heels in love with the instrument. The brass band did not have a double bass, but Yuri was able to persuade the authorities to buy it - it took almost a whole year to beg, but ultimately the purchase took place.
Passion for music
Around the same time when the musician Yuri Malikov began to dream of a double bass and subsequently began to learn the intricacies of playing it - for this, the young man specially enrolled in the Podolsk evening music school - another hobby appeared in his life - jazz. Yuri had not listened to this kind of music before, but now he wanted to not only listen to it, but also perform it. Music drew him deeper and deeper into its networks. The understanding came more and more clearly that the musical path was what Malikov would like to devote his life to.
Moscow
In 1962, Yuri Malikov graduated from the Podolsk technical school with honors and entered the Automechanical Institute. In the evenings, he went to the city park, where he played the double bass, entertaining the walking public. It was there, in the park, that another turn in the life of Yuri Malikov took place - the biography says that one evening the hero of our story had a fateful meeting with double bass player Vladimir Mikhalev. He was a member of the Moscow Symphony Orchestra and could not pass by his talented “colleague”. Mikhalev left Malikov his number and advised him to move to the capital. This was a chance - and Yuri did not miss it.
After dropping out of college, Yuri came to Moscow and called a recent acquaintance. With his help, the genius guy was accepted into the Ippolitov-Ivanov Music School. Yura's talent was soon noticed and Malikov was taken from his fourth year - and not just anywhere, but to the conservatory, to the orchestra department. Yuri Fedorovich Malikov graduated from it in 1969. A sea of possibilities lay ahead. A new life has begun...
Childhood and youth
Yuri Malikov was born at the height of the military events of World War II - on July 6, 1943 in the Chebotovka farmstead, Tarasovsky district, Rostov region.
The boy's childhood was spent under the impression of the war stories of his father Fyodor Mikhailovich, who returned from the front with a serious wound. The father also taught his son to play the harmonica, with which he went through the entire war. These lessons later helped the boy master playing the accordion.
In 1954, the Malikov family moved to live in the Moscow region. At the new school, Yura organized an accordion trio, the guys participated in all school events. And at the Podolsk Industrial College, where Malikov entered after school, he is again in the center of amateur performances, only this time he plays in a brass band.
The young man mastered playing many instruments, but his true love connected him with the double bass. Malikov first saw the instrument in the film “Sun Valley Serenade” and irrevocably fell in love with its sound. Having persuaded the management of the technical school club to buy a double bass, Yura specially enrolled in an evening music school in order to master the mystery of the game.
One day a symphony orchestra from the Moscow Regional Philharmonic came to Podolsk. And the band’s double bassist Vladimir Mikhalev saw his young musical instrument colleague performing in the park. After meeting, Mikhalev invited Malikov to Moscow and left his phone number.
“This is how I got a start in professional life,” Yuri Fedorovich recalls today.
Mikhalev got Yura into the Ippolitov-Ivanov Music School, from where the talented guy was taken to study at the Moscow State Conservatory in the orchestra department.
Beginning of a musical career
After graduating from the conservatory, Malikov got a job at Mosconcert and performed in the orchestra. However, even then the young man understood that this was not exactly what he wanted to do. However, the necessary solution did not come to mind; the idea could not take shape for quite some time.
Everything changed in the seventies. Then, as follows from the biography of Yuri Malikov, Japan suddenly appeared on the horizon. The artist lived there for some time, observing the pop life of the Land of the Rising Sun. Among other things, Yuri managed to visit the Expo-70 exhibition, where he saw a lot of modern equipment for musicians. And then, finally, the idea arose in his head: the whole point is that it was during this period that groups began to arise that sang not to the accompaniment of an orchestra, but independently playing musical instruments. It was precisely this idea that came to Yuri Malikov’s mind when looking at this equipment: it was necessary to create a vocal and instrumental ensemble that would stand out in terms of its format and its music. Returning to Moscow in seventy-one, the artist announced an audition for recruitment into a new group.

"Gems" by Yuri Malikov
At his casting, Yuri showed himself to be a meticulous and meticulous person: before approving the composition of the ensemble, he looked at quite a large number of people. Malikov was looking for new faces, new names - and for this he himself went to schools and theaters, to restaurants and cafes. And when the initial composition of the group was finally formed, he hurried to present the first compositions to the audience. The songs that Yuri Malikov decided to “shoot” were such hits as “I’ll take you to the tundra” and “Will I go out?” It must be said that the musician was right: these compositions really took off, making Yuri Malikov’s still nameless group instantly popular. Yes, at first the group did not have a name - just the abbreviation VIA. Radio listeners were invited to send their ideas for the name of the ensemble. Malikov liked the “Gems” version more than others.
Music
Malikov began his professional musical career by working at Mosconcert as part of the instrumental ensemble of singer Emil Gorovets. After graduating from the conservatory in 1969, he continued to work with various Mosconcert groups. Even then, the first VIA began to be created on the Soviet stage, groups of musicians singing not to the accompaniment of an orchestra, as before, but to their own playing of electric instruments.
Then the idea arose to organize an ensemble that would play music of a new genre and format. The final decision came after a trip to Japan in 1970. Yuri Malikov worked there for 8 months, played in a pop group. The musician spent the money he earned on the purchase of equipment and instruments, and upon arrival in Moscow he immediately announced an audition for recruitment into the ensemble.
In 1971, the whole country already knew about the new VIA “Gems” thanks to the hits “I’ll take you to the tundra” and “Will I go, will I come out,” which were heard on the air of the All-Union Radio. And in 1972, the team represented the country at the hit festival in Dresden.
The songs of “Gems” quickly won the love of the listener - simple and kind poems touched the soul, and the rhythmic melodies wanted to be hummed endlessly. Before these young and stylish guys, no one had imagined that a patriotic or folk song could become a hit and be picked up by literally everyone, young and old.
Malikov carefully selected the composition of soloists, each time paying attention to new talents: in music school, in amateur performances, on tour, even in a restaurant. So Yuri Fedorovich discovered many new names. Vyacheslav Dobrynin, Alexey Glyzin, Vladimir Vinokur, Vladimir Kuzmin and other performers began singing in “Gems”.
The peak of the group's creativity came in the mid-70s. Songs for “Gems” are written by masters of Soviet pop music: poets Leonid Derbenev, Mikhail Plyatskovsky, Robert Rozhdestvensky, composers Eduard Hanok, Mark Fradkin, Vladimir Shainsky, David Tukhmanov and others.
Malikov and his VIA tour throughout the Union, collecting palaces and stadiums. And only in 1996, after the group’s 25th anniversary, its golden hits were heard again in an updated arrangement. “Gems”, led by permanent leader Yuri Malikov, have united again to give creativity to loyal and new fans.

Decline and rebirth
The beginning of the nineties brought not only political changes to our country, but also musical ones: new groups appeared that began to overshadow the old ones. The former listeners of "Gems" had grown up, the new ones preferred younger and more modern ensembles - for example, "Tender May", which was just then at the peak of its fame. It was becoming more and more difficult for the “Gems” to play, perform, and whatever - earn money, and therefore in ninety-two Malikov made a Solomon decision: he announced the dissolution of his ensemble.
Four years passed without “Gems,” and nothing foreshadowed a return to the roots, when unexpectedly Malikov and his comrades were invited to film the “Golden Hit” program. Having performed there, the artists unexpectedly discovered that their popularity, it turns out, had not completely faded away, but was only smoldering, preparing to burn out. A new wave of interest broke out in the group - and the Gems gathered again.

Personal life of Yuri Malikov
Yuri Fedorovich is a true example of an exemplary family man, a good husband and father. He and his wife Lyudmila Mikhailovna have been together for almost fifty years. And we met in 1969, in the Hermitage garden, where Yuri came for a walk, and Lyudochka, a young music hall dancer, was dancing there. From that day on, they never parted for a long time. In their happy marriage, two children were born - in 1970, son Dmitry, seven years later - daughter Inna. The whole country knows the children of Yuri Malikov now. Dmitry is not only a successful singer, but also a talented composer. Inna is engaged in producing activities and sings in the group “New Gems”.

Yuri Fedorovich met his future wife Lyudmila Vyunkova in 1969. The young musician had just started working at Mosconcert when he accidentally wandered into the Hermitage garden and saw a charming music hall dancer. On the very first evening, Malikov escorted Lyudmila home, and the couple did not separate for a long time.
A few months later they got married, in 1970 their first child, Dmitry, was born, and in 1977, their daughter Inna. Today, the large and friendly Malikov family is a famous musical dynasty.

Thanks to the songs, without which not a single serious concert or even the smallest feast can be completed. In the 70s, this was one of the most successful groups in the country. Million-capacity stadiums, daily concerts, year-round tours. But what is behind this success?
A lonely wife waiting for her husband, cruel betrayals and the crisis of the 90s. We will tell you what this success actually cost him. For this we did the incredible! We managed to gather the entire Malikov family at one table and record an exclusive interview with Yuri Malikov’s wife Lyudmila.
He fell in love with Lyudmila at first sight. I met her at a concert and asked to take her home. While they were walking, I persuaded her to take a walk. She went to dress warmer, and at that time Malikov trampled her name in the snowdrift. Surprisingly, it was this childish act that struck Lyudmila on the spot. And this year, for the first time in over 50 years, Yuri Malikov repeated it.
In 1970, their first child, Dima Malikov, was born. And in 1971, Malikov Sr. created the Gems group, radically new for that time.
In “Gems” he did everything at once. Any modern producer can envy the success of Yuri Malikov! The team performed for Brezhnev, traveled to Afghanistan with patriotic concerts, and even helped to conclude political deals. In 1997, an important agreement on the Black Sea Fleet was signed. President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma strictly ordered that “Gems” be present at the event.
And one fine day the musicians betray their producer. They enter into an agreement and... leave the team. Two weeks before the planned tour! We will talk about how Malikov survived this betrayal in our film.
Lyudmila Malikova avoids publicity and journalists. She sincerely believes that the meaning of her life is to be a support for her husband. Every woman in the Malikov family remembers this. Perhaps this is why all the men of the Malikov family choose their wives very carefully. And if they get married, then forever.
Three generations of Malikovs are very similar in appearance. Grandson Dima studies in France, and he doesn’t get to visit home often. But every time he comes to Moscow, the first thing he does is rush to meet his grandfather. We managed to film their meeting with their grandfather. The grandson came not alone, but with his girlfriend.
Granddaughter Stefania loves to be the center of attention, periodically appears in various programs and maintains a fashion blog on Instagram. She is 18. The authority of Yuri Malikov is indisputable not only at home, but also at work. At Gems, he set strict rules: no slacking and no drunkenness. Well, one more rule: the main thing is not to be late! All the musicians knew: if you stay even five minutes, you will kiss the wheels of the departing bus.
The constancy and reliability that is felt around Yuri Malikov is actually the result of titanic efforts. He doesn’t know how to spare and feel sorry for himself at all. In 2006, Yuri Malikov was on the verge of life and death. The examination showed that the carotid artery was 80% affected by plaques. Our doctors didn’t even take up the operation. I had to take Malikov to Germany. The doctors said: if it weren’t for your son, you simply wouldn’t exist now.
The children clearly lacked attention from their father. But, be that as it may, both children followed in his footsteps. Dima Malikov graduated from the conservatory with honors. Inna gave up her solo career and began promoting her father’s business. She is the producer of New Gems. These are young guys who perform songs from the repertoire of Yuri Malikov’s ensemble, but in a new arrangement.
The peak of Gems' popularity came in the 70s. But life made adjustments. In the 80s, Russian rock came out of the underground, and VIA gradually faded into the background. In the 90s, Gems ceased to exist. It seemed that at that moment Yuri Malikov himself died. In modern times, a flexible leader ready for compromise was needed. And he, too constant, too correct, too intelligent, did not fit into the new world of show business. Gradually he accepted defeat and decided that this was how it should be. It's time for other musicians.
And fate thanked him for his constancy. In 1996, the musicians were invited to gather for the TV show “Golden Hit” to celebrate the 25th anniversary. The musicians enjoyed resounding success. It turned out that the songs of “Gems” are still remembered and loved! It was then that the decision was made to revive the group. And today the Gems exist again.
Yuri Fedorovich is happy and always says: “It’s a sin for me to complain about life. Perhaps all my hopes have come true...” It’s not for nothing that he always ends his concerts with the song “Don’t be sad, your whole life is ahead of you!” Your whole life is ahead, hope and wait!”
