- I? Consulting? The Lord is with you! I copy from them. I can quote a few phrases of one oligarch that I stole: “Bandits are like nuclear weapons. We must know that it exists, but we should use it only in extreme cases.” Or another phrase that didn’t make it into the book: “I really love sharks. Sharks never attack when they are not hungry. And they are always hungry." This is the best self-description.

Julia, why don’t you wear the ring that Boris Abramovich gave you?

- There was no ring! It’s just that someone, by order, I believe, of Pugachev, from whose encroachments we defended Novaya Gazeta, posted his libel on the Internet that I slept with Berezovsky, Kiselev and Deripaska. Such a sex bomb. And about the ring it’s also a lie. But if that's what you want, next time I'll wear a ring.

Do you have security?

- What security, God bless you!

Who, in your opinion, are the three most outstanding women in Russian history?

– Catherine II, Anna Akhmatova, but I would find it difficult to name the third.

- I don’t pretend. I would limit myself to two figures if we are talking about Russia. If we take Ancient Rus', then I can name Princess Olga.

You once joked that in 2008 you would gladly vote for the Labrador Koni in the presidential elections. Do you think a female president is worse than a dog?

– Koni is definitely no worse than the other candidates, and besides, she is feminine.

Your latest book is called Warland, are you that bloodthirsty?

- I? All the books in the world are either about war or about love, well, a few more are written in the manner of Marcel Proust. I write about war as a way of human interaction with the world. Am I bloodthirsty? There is a legend that the author of “Heike Monogatari” - one of the best epics written in the history of the struggle between the houses of Heike (Taira) and Genji (Minamoto) in Japan in the 11th century - was a woman.

You have published more than a dozen books. I wonder how long it takes you to write one book?

- On average, a year. But this does not mean that all this time I am exclusively engaged in books. I write articles, broadcast on radio and television, although this is not correct, because a book is an immersion into another world. When you write a book, everyone around you: the people on TV, the people you call, the people you meet, seem like cardboard, flat, strange creatures. And when you emerge and submerge again, everything is the other way around, your heroes seem like incomprehensible figures running around the pages. You have to dive into a book just like into the real world.

In 1992, your mother Alla Latynina was the chairman of the Booker Prize. Who did she give the first prize to and do you have a goal to receive it someday?

– It was Mark Kharitonov’s book “The Line of Fate, or Milashevich’s Chest.” This is the kind of literature that is very pleasant to comment on, but difficult to read. Actually, the whole Booker Prize is like that. I'll definitely never get it. It is awarded for serious literature. Serious literature in the modern world has the following characteristics: firstly, it does not have a mass readership, secondly, it is difficult to read, and thirdly, the plot is not the main thing in it. And I want to write books that people read. I don't think my literature is bad. It is like the Iliad - that is, mass literature, although this does not mean that the Argonautica by Apollonius of Rhodes, written during the time of the second sophistry, belongs to the genre of very elite literature, worse than the Iliad. There are eras in the history of culture and literature when it is believed that good literature should be mass (Aeschylus, Sophocles, Shakespeare), and there are eras of the second sophistry or our modern times, when it is believed that good literature should be elitist.

Do you have a book you'd like to burn?

- Unfortunately this is not possible. This is my first book, which is called: “The Case of the Missing God” - but it is part of the science fiction cycle and is an integral part of it.

Filming is currently underway for your second book, “Industrial Zone.” When will the film be released?

– There will be additional filming in the spring, now – preliminary editing. The producer of the project is Shura Atanesyan (the film “Bastards”). You don’t even have to ask about who plays the main characters. I understand actors and singers like a pig knows oranges. It's like Sherlock Holmes, who was very surprised when he was told that the Earth revolves around the Sun.

Do you even know Alla Pugacheva?

– I even know that Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev was a petty politician of the Pugacheva era.

Are you talking about politics again? Tell us better why this time you decided to do a TV project yourself?

“We just have money to make a film.” What fool would sell standing crops when you can sell flour, which will cost much more?

I know you were dissatisfied with the film “The Hunt for the Red Deer.” Why?

– To be honest, I still haven’t watched this series. But I read the script. I was deeply shocked by the scene about how the board of directors of a bank was discussing an attempt on a person’s life. At this time, the press secretary enters and says: “The man is alive.” This idea of ​​the function of press secretaries amazed me.

Did you get paid a lot for the film adaptation of your book?

- It's pennies. I would pay myself, just so that this film would not come out. And to hell with it. He didn't crush me. It is my fault. I was scammed. But if you are not a rabbit, then don’t get a divorce. I have complaints about myself, and not about Ernst, who was not obliged to monitor what was happening at the grass level. I didn’t have the strength and confidence to insist on my own, so now these are the claims of a sucker who was dumped.

How do you manage to do everything: write books, scripts, host programs?

– I have two little secrets. You have to run for an hour in the morning. Running is like a drug for me. It's good to think while running. I ran through it and came up with some article. For this reason, I also like to ride a bike, which combines well with mental exercise. I don’t like alpine skiing, because if you think about it, you’ll fly away somewhere. Over the past three or four years, I have only had one occasion when I did not run - in the capital-type village of Tsentoroi. I got out in the morning, shook my head, and didn’t run... All day I felt like a drug addict who was going through withdrawal. At 11 pm I arrived in Moscow, took off my boots and went for a run. This is a serious biological addiction. Another secret is to never leave for Moscow before 6 pm - thus saving 2-3 hours on traffic jams.

Are you on holiday in Courchevel?

– Once I went skiing in Austria. You'll laugh: I didn't have enough physical activity. In the morning I still ran for an hour; you spend six hours on skis, and you feel less tired than if you ran through the forest on the flats for three hours.

Perhaps, as a girl from an intelligent family, you should be outraged by the behavior of individual oligarchs at a French resort?

- What do you! I sincerely admire people like Mikhail Prokhorov, who live like the Chinese Emperor Wu Ti, who had 2,000 concubines. This is fundamentally different from everything that the West can offer on this matter. Although, on the other hand, in China, when the emperor had 2,000 concubines, this was considered a sign of the decline of imperial power, since there was no time left for anything else.

After the scandal with the arrest of Mr. Prokhorov, several television channels discussed the same topic: can a rich man spend his money as he pleases, regardless of the morals and norms of society? The studio audience voted yes. What do you think?

- But if the question were put to a vote: do you think you personally can manage the money you earn or should the house committee decide for you? The rich then earn money to be freer. Money is a degree of freedom. True, giving up money is also freedom. Khodorkovsky wrote: only in prison did I feel free. But for this you need to have something to give up... In a state that had a sanctimonious attitude towards the spending of its citizens, nothing good has ever happened.

How much money do you personally need to feel free?

– I’m not quite the right person in this regard.

Don't you need a male harem?

– Well, this is not even discussed at all. I’m definitely not built that way, so I don’t envy women who are built that way. I watch with horror the barrage of accusations that fall on Prokhorov or Sobchak, and I understand that 90% of these accusations are expressed by people who envy them, they salivate because they themselves cannot do it. And since I am structured differently, I watch such people with sincere admiration, as if they were creatures of a different biological species. Apparently, we are structured differently at the physiological level. How a hare watches a fox or a fox watches a hare - this is interesting to me.

Do you have girlfriends?

– We have few successful women who are not involved in cosmetics or restaurants. My favorite friend is Marina Pereverzeva, former owner of Almaz-Press. Few men would have stood in her place if their business had been attacked as much as hers. They tried to gobble her up for three million dollars, but it ended with her selling the business to Vnesheconombank for 38 million.

Do you know how to kill time? Can you do what ordinary women are so happy about? Gossip with a friend, watch some reality show on TV, go for half a day to a beauty salon or shopping?

– I watch TV very rarely, I devote little time to manicure, especially in winter, because I ride a bike to get there, and it’s very tiring in the snow. As for shopping, I’ll say: no-see! There are plenty of other ways to please yourself besides shopping, alcohol and drugs.

Do you often do stupid things?

- Less than I would like. This is bad. This happens in cases when a person has less determination than intelligence. Brains and determination are mutually exclusive. I don’t go to discos, I don’t sing karaoke. Simply because I can't sing at all. And if I can’t do something or don’t know something, then I don’t do it at all. I won’t waste time on something I can’t even learn to do with a D+.

With such a busy schedule, do you have time for your personal life?

– I am not a very talkative person about my personal life. I prefer Tang era China. I am a writer, I compare my life with the lives of my friends and heroes from my books. What did Pushkin write about Byron? “You don’t have to regret that Byron’s diaries drowned, he’s all in his books.”

The United States won the Second World War, but for whom the USSR actually fought remains to be seen.

She was criticized by Novodvorskaya and Borov, because she believes that “lumpen people and rednecks” (that is, not liberals) should be deprived of the right to vote.

Suddenly (for Echo of Moscow) he supports Roizman and Navalny.

It evokes the fierce, rabid hatred of Putinists, patriots, communists and nationalists[5][6][7][8]. A grateful admirer of her work, a certain Andrei Morozov (known on the Internet as kenigtiger), once decided to supply Latynina with tomatoes, but Latynina, as she herself says, tore up the tomato-thrower[9].

She is also credited with close acquaintance with Berezovsky, Kiselyov and Deripaska[11].

Latynina’s speeches evoke tears and indignation among people with historical and economic education.

Eduard Bagirov accused Latynina on Twitter that she was saying untrue words about him in the fifth program in a row and asked a question that caused heated discussion in the blogosphere and the media: “Perhaps I should order her to be shot at the entrance, like Politkovskaya?”[12] Bagirov later explained that he wrote his message while drunk.[13]

In February 2013, she published a column in Novaya Gazeta about a meteorite that fell in the Chelyabinsk region, starting it “I’m not a rocket scientist, I’m a philologist” and accusing the authorities of hiding ICBM tests. Due to the abundance of pearls, the article was widely criticized on blogs.[14][15] Later, Latynina asked to remove her article from the site.

For Latynina’s article “If we are not the West, then who are we?”, in which she ironized the calls of State Duma deputies to protect “a special Russian culture” and drew analogies between them and Hitler, the editors of Novaya Gazeta received a warning from Roskomnadzor in October 2014 about extremism and the requirement to correct the material.[16]

In August 2021, two unknown people attacked Latynina and doused her with feces.[17]

Criticism[edit | edit wiki text]

Latynina is the target of criticism from many Russian nationalists. Included in the so-called “list of enemies of the Russian people”[53], proposed by State Duma deputy from the LDPR Nikolai Kuryanovich.

The journalist's coverage of events in South Ossetia, including the armed conflict in August 2008, was sharply criticized; opponents of Yulia Latynina considered her biased and tendentious[54][55]. In particular, during this conflict, she stated live on air that it was “very difficult for the Georgian army to land troops far enough behind enemy lines”[56]. According to the editor-in-chief of Ekho Moskvy, Alexei Venediktov, these statements were made[57][58][59][60] by Vladimir Putin as one of the complaints about the radio station’s coverage of the conflict[60][61]. The main Ossetian media[62], including those directly associated with the government of South Ossetia, accused her of “Ossetian phobia”, of disseminating obviously erroneous information and bias based on extreme pro-American, anti-Ossetian and anti-Russian positions; in unfounded accusations of Abkhazians and Ossetians simultaneously with the idealization of Georgia and its authorities. She was also sharply criticized for, according to the Ossetian media, the portrayal of Ossetian society as aggressive, backward and ungovernable, where there are no civilians, and everyone is criminals; for equating Ossetians with Palestinian terrorists, while, according to Ossetian journalists and analysts, her descriptions of the war and previous events were propaganda, manipulative and frivolous in nature, and some comments made before and after the conflict actually contained calls for new aggressive military actions against Ossetian[63][64][65][66][67][68].

Some Russian journalists and military experts criticized her for, in their opinion, incorrect statements about “cutting off” South Ossetia from Russia in the winter. With these statements, Latynina substantiated her point of view about the nature of the military conflict in August 2008 provoked by Russia, and not pre-planned by Georgia[69][70][71], as well as for the statement about possible surveillance of her by the South Ossetian authorities, which, according to in the opinion of opponents, did not have any serious basis [72] [73]: the assertion about the possibility of identifying a “strong South Ossetian accent” among the persecutors, as Latynina wrote about in her statement on the website of the Ekho Moskvy radio station, aroused distrust among her critics. However, Latynina was supported by the radio station’s editor-in-chief Alexey Venediktov[74]:

Yes, there really was a problem, we talked about it. I won’t tell you, but I’m very grateful to those people, the guys from law enforcement agencies, who, firstly, covered up Yulia for several months and, secondly, very professionally identified those who were pursuing her, who followed her with state passes, but without numbers.

The national newspaper of Ingushetia "Serdalo" published a letter signed by deputies of the People's Assembly of the republic, where Yulia Latynina was accused of irresponsibility and permissiveness, unprofessionalism and failure to comply with ethical standards. From the point of view of the deputies, Latynina is engaged in propaganda of interethnic hatred and enmity, and her radio broadcasts are ordered, provocative and slanderous[75].

In September 2009, on the tenth anniversary of the house bombings in Russia, historian Yuri Felshtinsky, in an open letter to Latynina, criticized her version that the FSB was not involved in these terrorist attacks[76].

Latynina in her publications often makes rather harsh statements and radical theses. In particular, journalist Igor Yakovenko did not agree with Latynina’s opinion, expressed following the results of the 2010 presidential elections in Ukraine, that democracy is not applicable in poor countries[77]. Later (in 2013) he spoke about Latynina this way: “Yulia Leonidovna is known for her favor towards the FSB, Kadyrov and other powerful people, as well as her symmetrical dislike for all sorts of eccentric human rights activists and other goons and losers.”[78].

In the “Pro” program of the Russian News Service on July 18, 2010, an employee of the Institute of Military History of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, Aleksey Isaev, criticized Latynina’s view of the events of the Great Patriotic War and the pre-war period in the history of the Soviet Union on May 8, 2010 in the “Access Code” program on the radio “ Echo of Moscow,” noting, in his opinion, many falsifications and mistakes made[79].

In October 2010, representatives of the Russian Muslim community accused Yulia Leonidovna of Islamophobia and inciting interfaith hatred[80]. According to them, she does this in a clearly offensive manner with manipulation of facts. For example, the journalist’s hints that Bibles were allegedly burned in the Muslim world prompted Heydar Jemal to object that no Muslims could burn the Bible, since “the Bible for Muslims is Kitab, Scripture”[81].

Publicist, deputy editor-in-chief of the online publication Grani.ru Nikolai Rudensky[82] accused Latynina of “strange affection for bloody barbarism,” commenting on her statements about various events where blood was shed and there were victims. He criticized the views of the journalist, who has a negative attitude towards the international human rights movement[83]. In his opinion, Yulia Leonidovna “preaches the cult of brute force and more and more consistently denies the basic principles of modern civilization”[84]. The editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta, Dmitry Muratov, commenting on the publication of Latynina’s article in his newspaper with sharp criticism of human rights organizations, wrote that “Yulia Leonidovna Latynina wrote a misanthropic text” that Vladimir Putin might like[85].

As for Yu. Latynina’s article, its meaning is this: the goal of scientists is not to study nature, but to earn money, and if they are paid, they are ready to lie left and right. Fear pays best. So they invented global warming as the most paid horror story, although it is clear to everyone that this is a complete lie. In my opinion, Yu. Latynina failed to prove this position.

In 2011, Novaya Gazeta published Latynina’s article “Europe, you’re crazy!” In it and a subsequent conversation on the Ekho Moskvy radio, Latynina opposed the idea of ​​a united Europe, universal suffrage, social justice, multiculturalism, and government regulation. Such positions drew criticism from some journalists and public figures[86], in particular, journalist Andrei Loshak called her views “completely wild and morally outdated,” and art critic Ekaterina Degot noted racist overtones and hatred of lower social classes in Latynina’s article[87].

After the program “Access Code” on December 7, 2013, in which Latynina stated in particular that “the apartheid system was one of the possible systems for the elevation of the black race,” a series of single pickets took place near the editorial office of Ekho Moskvy under the general slogan “Racism will not pass.” [88].

Internet memes and Latynina’s famous mistakes[edit | edit wiki text]

Some critics[89][90] point to a number of negligence in Latynina’s books and her statements on air. For example, in the book “Land of War” Latynina used the metaphor “She was rushing around like an oscilloscope needle”[91]. This phrase gave rise to a corresponding Internet meme[54][92][93]. Later, Latynina admitted that oscilloscopes do not have arrows, stated that her mistakes did not end there, and thanked her for advertising the book, “because I hope that someone will think of reading it and making sure that there is something other than oscilloscope arrows”[94]. The second meme born in Latynina’s works was the word “k screw essence” (instead of “k screw essence”), which, apparently, was the result of incorrect operation of the spelling check and correction system. Anna Vrazhina, who wrote about this, believes this word is either a joke or a typo[93].

Latynina made a mistake twice when she wrote that Nicolaus Copernicus was burned at the stake[95], confusing him with Giordano Bruno[96].

Hot on the heels of the incident in Chelyabinsk on February 15, 2013, Yulia Leonidovna made an original assumption that it was explained by a missile fired from a neighboring test site. Latynina’s statement did not go unnoticed[97][98]. A couple of hours later, the text was removed from the Novaya Gazeta website[97]. The next day, the journalist admitted that she had rushed to conclusions and described her assumption as “absolute nonsense”[99].

Writer Dmitry Bykov, lawyer Yuri Shmidt, literary critic Irina Rodnyanskaya, poet and columnist Viktor Toporov hold a high opinion of Latynina as a journalist[42][43][44][45]. According to Dmitry Bykov, “Yulia Latynina is the number one journalist in today’s Russia.”

Literary critics praise Latynina as a writer, comparing her with Alexandre Dumas, the Strugatsky brothers, John Grisham, Frederick Forsyth and John le Carré[45][46][47][48][49].

The novel “The Insider” was included in the rating of the TOP 20 books of the 21st century from the writer Alexander Mazin - “books without which you simply cannot go through life,” compiled by him at the request of the publishing house “Astrel-SPb”[50]. Biography facts

Latynina Yulia was born in 1966, into a family of people who devoted themselves to literature. Her mother is a literary critic, and her father is both a prose writer and a poet. So it’s unlikely that anyone could be surprised by the girl’s choice. Therefore, after graduating from school, in 1983 she became a student at the Gorky Literary Institute.

Latynina’s successful studies (she graduated with honors) were encouraged by an exchange internship at the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium), after which the girl became a graduate student in the Romano-Germanic department of her native institute.

And from that time on, Yulia Latynina significantly expanded her range of interests, also taking up a serious study of economics. In the early 90s, when many people had absolutely no idea what was happening around, she began to popularly explain the essence of events from the pages of the newspapers Izvestia and Segodnya.

Creative path

From 1990 to 1995, the young philologist wrote the novel “Irov’s Day,” which marked the beginning of the fantasy cycle “Wei Empire” (“The Preacher”, “Sorcerers and Ministers”, “The Tale of the Golden Sovereign”, “Clearchus and Heraclea”, etc.) and awarded by literary critics the epithet “exquisite.”

In 2004, the writer acted as one of the founders of the “Committee 2008” chaired by Garry Kasparov, who was in opposition to the country’s President Vladimir Putin and his supporters, and also joined the Anti-Corruption organization.
