Rock 'n' roller. 10 facts about the legendary musician Kurt Cobain

NIRVANA

In 1985, Kurt Cobain formed a group called Fecal Matter. About a year later, the group broke up without releasing a single disc. However, Kurt's friend, Krist Novoselic , liked the cassette with the demo recording, who suggested forming a new group. The third member of the team was drummer Chad Channing. The band changed several names - Skid Row, Ted Ed Fred, Bliss, Pen Cap Chew - until they settled on the name Nirvana. As Cobain explained, he was looking for a name that “would be beautiful or nice.” Cobain himself said that the correct name should be written in capital letters: NIRVANA.

Biography of Kurt Cobain

In 1982, he went to live with his mother, but after a while he left her because of his stepfather’s rejection. In 1984 and 1985, he lived with friends, wandered, and had problems with the law. Soon Cobain discovered punk music and decided to create his own musical group. In search of like-minded people, he met members of the Aberdeen team Melvins, who combined elements of punk and hard rock in their music. While at the Melvins, Cobain became friends with Krist Novoselic, who later became the bassist for Nirvana.

In 1985, Kurt Cobain formed a group called Fecal Matter. The team was not successful and was soon disbanded.

In December 1987, Kurt, Crist and drummer Aaron Burkhard formed Nirvana in Aberdeen.

In June 1989, the group released the album Bleach on the independent Sub Pop label. After this, the band went on a month-long tour of the United States.

In 1990, the group got a new drummer, Dave Grohl, and in September 1991, Nirvana's second album, Nevermind, was released.

A month after its release, the album was certified platinum. Thanks to this album, the group became famous, and a wave of “nirvanamania” rolled across the world.

Nevermind marked the consolidation of a new style of alternative music: grunge. In 1992, the album topped the American charts. The title track "Smells Like Teen Spirit" entered the top ten of the British charts.

Nevermind, which sold 10 million copies, is considered by critics to be one of the best albums in music history.

The group released the third and last studio album, called In Ultero, in September 1993. In October, Nirvana went on a major tour of North America and performed at the MTV Unplugged acoustic show in New York in November 1993.

In February 1994, the team went on a tour of Europe.

After a concert on March 1, 1994 at the Terminal Eins in Munich, Cobain fell ill with bronchitis and severe laryngitis.

Another show that was scheduled to take place at the same venue the following night was postponed. On the morning of March 4 in Rome, Cobain was found unconscious in a hotel room and was taken to hospital. Tours, including numerous UK dates, have been cancelled. In the following weeks, Cobain's long-time addiction to heroin made itself felt. Friends persuaded the musician to go to a rehabilitation clinic, but after a few days he escaped from the hospital and flew to Seattle.

Courtney Love and a wedding in pajamas

Kurt Cobain's only wife was actress and singer Courtney Love. They met in 1990 at a concert in a Portland club, where both performed with their own bands. In 1992, Love discovered that she was expecting a child from Cobain, and on February 24 of the same year, their wedding took place on a Hawaiian beach in Waikiki. Cobain came to the ceremony in pajamas, saying that “he was too lazy to put on a suit.”

Personal life

Kurt Cobain met his future wife in 1990 at a concert in one of the clubs in Portland, where both performed as members of their bands. Courtney Love herself claimed that she noticed Kurt back in 1989 at a Nirvana concert and instantly showed interest in him, but the musician ignored the girl.

Later, the performer explained his behavior with a desire to remain single longer. An affair began between Kurt and Courtney, and in early 1992 the girl found out about her pregnancy. Already in February of the same year, the couple got married.

The wedding ceremony took place on the Hawaiian beach of Waikiki. Courtney Love wore a dress that once belonged to Frances Farmer (the newlyweds admired this actress), and Kurt Cobain, being too lazy to put on a suit, came to the celebration in pajamas. On August 18, 1992, the couple had a daughter, Frances Bean Cobain.

Daughter

Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love's daughter, Frances Bean Cobain , was born on August 18, 1992. The girl was named after Frances McKee from the Scottish twee-pop group The Vaselines. Frances Bean's godparents were rock musician Michael Stipe and Hollywood actress Drew Barrymore. Cobain's only daughter tried herself as a vocalist, but is now better known as an artist. Her great-grandmother, Kurt Cobain’s grandmother, was a professional artist, and the musician himself showed a talent for drawing from his youth.

Kurt Cobain has experienced health problems since childhood. He suffered from chronic bronchitis and stomach pain of unknown origin. As a child, he was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and was forced to take Ritalin. He was later diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder (manic depression). At the age of 13, Kurt began experimenting with strong drugs and narcotic drugs, and by 1991 he had a severe drug addiction. The relationship with Courtney Love only worsened the situation: Kurt’s wife also abused drugs. As a result, both had to go to the clinic several times to undergo rehabilitation. This did not improve the situation: from the beginning of 1994 until the tragic end, Cobain, being in a state of severe depression, made several suicide attempts. At the same time, the musician himself claimed that it was just a “mistake.”

1993 is the release date of the album “In utero” and the beginning of the fight against heroin addiction.

This was the peak of the band’s and musician’s popularity, but it did not bring personal happiness. Kurt wanted to put an end to the fame that had washed over him and live a quiet, peaceful life with his family.

A completed monument and a failed bridge

In 2011, a monument in his honor was unveiled in Aberdeen, Cobain's hometown.
It is an enlarged concrete copy of one of the musician’s guitars, above which a bronze ribbon with lines from the song On a Plain flutters. That same year, Aberdeen wanted to name a bridge after Cobain, but the City Council voted against it. As those who spoke out against this idea said, Cobain made negative statements about his hometown and also used drugs, and therefore renaming the bridge in his honor could have a bad effect on Aberdeen's reputation. Music

In 1985, Kurt Cobain founded the musical group Fecal Matter. The group had 7 compositions, but without releasing a single disc, the group broke up, but this experience influenced the musician’s creative biography in the future. Then Kurt's friend, musician Krist Novoselic, suggested creating a rock band. In addition to Novoselic and Cobain, drummer Chad Channing appeared in the team.

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

The musicians could not find a suitable name for their team - the group was called Skid Row, Ted Ed Fred, Bliss and Pen Cap Chew. In the end we settled on Nirvana. In 1988, the group released a single called Love Buzz/Big Cheese, and the next year the musicians released their first album, Bleach. The songs performed by Kurt Cobain as part of Nirvana became a kind of combination of punk and pop styles.

The band gained worldwide popularity in 1991 after the release of the album Nevermind. The composition Smells Like Teen Spirit, having remained at the top of the charts for a long time, became a real anthem of the generation. After the release of this composition, the musician’s albums sold millions of copies. Even the legendary band Guns N' Roses remained out of competition.

Each concert of the musician attracted thousands of loyal fans. Cobain felt discomfort from such popularity. The musician was annoyed that he had become an idol for the masses. Nevertheless, media representatives called Nirvana the “flagship of generation X.”

Nirvana - Come As You Are

The musician sought to be identified with the direction of independent rock, so the American rock singer made his next album In Utero, released in 1993, deliberately dark. The album did not become popular like the previous one, but took leading places in the charts. The most successful songs were About a Girl, You Know You're, All Apologies, Rape Me, In Bloom, Lithium, Heart-Shaped Box and Come As You Are. Videos for these compositions became popular all over the world.

The musician's fans also liked the cover version of the song And I love her, performed by The Beatles. In an interview, Kurt repeatedly noted that as a child he loved listening to the compositions of a popular band from the UK.

Rebel Frances Bean Cobain: how the daughter of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love livesFrances Bean Cobain
Over the past few weeks, the name Frances Bean Cobain has often appeared in the media: either she shines at Fashion Week, or everyone is discussing the alimony that the girl will have to pay to her ex-husband. SPLETNIK.RU decided to find out more about the 24-year-old daughter of the late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love.

    Childhood

The daughter of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love was born on August 18, 1992. The girl received a double name: Frances - in honor of the singer Frances McKee from the Scottish group The Vaselines, Bean - because on an ultrasound examination she seemed to her father to look like a bean (bean - bean in English).

The baby's godparents were close friends of Kurt and Courtney - rock musician Michael Stipe and actress Drew Barrymore.

From the first days of her life, or more precisely, even before she was born, Frances found herself at the center of a scandal. The fact is that Courtney Love mentioned during pregnancy that she was taking heroin - and thunder struck. The press was filled with devastating articles in which the negligent mother was censured. The singer later stated that her words were taken out of context and misinterpreted, but the matter could not be stopped. The guardianship authorities decided to take control of the situation and began their own investigation, as a result of which Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain lost their parental rights - Frances was then only two weeks old.

The couple soon managed to return their daughter, but the problems did not end there. After Cobain's death, the girl was raised not only by Love herself, but also by the family of the late musician - her grandmother and aunt Frances. It was under their care that the girl was when her mother was admitted to rehabilitation centers where she was treated for drug addiction.

    Relationships with parents

Frances practically does not remember her father: the last time the girl saw him was when she was not yet two years old. Maybe it’s good that he doesn’t remember: the date with Kurt took place in a “rehab”, where he was undergoing another course of treatment in the hope of getting rid of his drug addiction. It was April 1, 1994, and on the 8th Cobain was found dead in his own home.

But despite the fact that Frances’ father could not be identified, the girl feels a strong connection with him. At the same time, in Kurt, his daughter sees, first of all, a close and dear person, and not a hero of the generation and a cult musician. True, Frances’s father’s work is not close: she does not hide the fact that she does not like Nirvana songs. He also doesn’t like it when they talk about “club 27” and romanticize Cobain’s suicide (whether it was actually a suicide is still unknown).

    Francis Bean Cobain

Frances received 37 percent of her father's inheritance (millions and millions of dollars), and she also owns the copyright to the musician's legacy. The girl manages all this carefully. In 2015, she became the producer of the documentary film “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck,” dedicated to the musician.

The girl's relationship with her mother is not easy. When Frances was little, Courtney Love often ended up in rehabilitation clinics, and her daughter found herself under the supervision of other relatives and social authorities.

But even when Courtney took care of her daughter herself, the family idyll did not work out. It got to the point that in 2009, Frances sued her mother, saying that she was beating her. Courtney was deprived of parental rights and was forbidden to approach her daughter, and Frances moved in with her grandmother. For a long time, mother and daughter did not communicate at all, and Love even learned about the wedding of her only heiress a few days later - Courtney was not invited to the celebration.

However, recently, women have managed to find a common language: they get along again, communicate, go out together and even engage in art projects.

    Career

Art projects are Frances' passion. It was art that the girl decided to study when she went to college - and for this reason she refused a role in Tim Burton’s film “Alice in Wonderland”. The young star tried herself in both music and journalism, but she was truly fascinated by painting - in 2013, the girl’s first personal exhibition took place.

Many predicted a modeling career for the daughters of Kurt and Courtney, because Frances has everything necessary today for success in the fashion industry - a spectacular appearance and a big name. Magazines were eager to get the star girl on the cover, but this path did not appeal to Kurt Cobain’s daughter - at one time she even stopped watching her weight and did not pay attention to the extra pounds.

Frances had no intention of being a good girl at all: tattoos, piercings, pink hair, provocative behavior, alcohol... Many were seriously worried that she would follow in the footsteps of her father and mother, but it seems that for now there is no need to fear this - the daughter of rockers has forgotten about provocative antics and leads a quiet life.

    Personal life

At 24, Francis is already divorced. The girl dated musician Isaiah Silva for a long time, whom she eventually married two years ago. This marriage was discussed in the press for a long time: everyone said that the girl’s husband was a copy of her late father.

The marriage did not last long - Frances filed for divorce this spring. Now the court has ordered the girl to pay her ex-husband alimony - 12 thousand dollars for the entire four months that the divorce proceedings will last. Frances doesn't mind, she just wants to forget this story as soon as possible and move on.
