Biography[ | ]
James McAvoy at the 2010 Toronto Film Festival
James McAvoy was born in 1979 in Glasgow, Scotland, to a psychiatric hospital nurse, Elizabeth Johnstone, and a builder, James McAvoy Sr. When the boy was seven years old, his parents divorced[4]. His mother, due to poor health, sent James to her butcher parents, Mary and James Johnstone, who lived in a council house in Drumchapel (English) Russian. Sometimes she herself came to live with them. James has a sister, Joy (vocalist in the Scottish band Streetside), and a younger half-brother, Donald. After his parents' divorce, James has not communicated with his father, although in 2006, when his son became famous, James Sr. said in an interview with the Sunday Mirror that he would like to establish contact with him, but does not know how to do it.
In his youth, attending Thomas Aquinas Catholic School, Glasgow in Jordanhill,[5] James wanted to become a priest, but his Scottish character led him to join the Royal Navy. However, the young man's destiny was to become an actor. One day, producer David Hayman came to James's class and told him a couple of funny stories about filming. They interested McAvoy so much that he immediately asked the famous director to give him the role. So in the film “The Next Room” he first appeared on screen. And the actor’s skills were honed by the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama[en], where James entered with amazing ease, despite the huge competition[6].
Among McAvoy's most significant roles are the faun Mister Tumnus in the first part of The Chronicles of Narnia, the young Leto Atreides II in the mini-series Children of Dune, Wesley Gibson in the action film Wanted, Rory O'Shea in the drama And at Heart I I’m dancing.” James was also a candidate for the role of Bilbo Baggins in the film adaptation of John Tolkien's The Hobbit, but the contract went to Martin Freeman. In addition, he starred in the film “Atonement”, in 2009 a film with his participation “The Last Resurrection” was released - about the last days of the life of Leo Tolstoy, and in 2011 he played the role of Professor X Charles Xavier in the first part of the new trilogy “X-Men: First class"[7].
In 2013, McAvoy starred in the controversial film adaptation of Irvine Welsh's novel Filth as the crazed, corrupt Scottish detective Bruce Robertson. The role is very different from McAvoy's usual role, while most critics praised his performance, and some of them even considered Robertson's portrayal to be the best of his entire career.
James McAvoy on death, religion and his family
James McAvoy spoke about himself in a short interview with The Guardian while promoting his latest film, Victor Frankenstein. There are no questions in the interview, only James' answers. Sometimes it seems that he is just fooling around and continues to play the role of the “bad lieutenant,” but even if it is an act, it is still interesting to look at McAvoy like this.
I really enjoy playing psychology , people who are obsessed and deluded. This means that as an actor I constantly push my imagination.
I was once very timid , which was good for me. I had to increase my self-esteem and build my own positive image. That's probably good. Perhaps if I had not been shy, I don’t know where this would have led.
Maybe if Scotland gained independence , that would be nice. It will happen anyway, we are on the right track, just a little more, just a little more. This will be an amicable divorce, not a quarrel.
To a large extent, I was raised by my grandparents . They taught me to respect people and value money. Money is freedom. From them I learned that you need to take your place and not borrow money or take out loans.
When I became a parent myself , I stopped scolding my children for bad behavior. I rather blame my parents. I don't want to spank children, it's better to punish their parents.
I was raised Catholic, but when given the chance to make my own choices, I stopped going to church. I won't take my son there until he asks.
We live in an environment that is moving further away from religion . Superheroes have become our gods. They are like the Greek and Norse gods: unreliable characters with incredible abilities. The funny thing is that they are symbolic. God is not a symbol.
I'm a typical middle class drinker. A month passes, and you suddenly realize that you drank every single day, not completely, but definitely a little. I say everywhere that I don't smoke, but I smoke.
When you're growing up , the football team can help you identify, it's like wearing a badge on your chest. But it's very hard to support Celtic. You get excited about defeating Barcelona, and then fall into complete depression after the defeat.
Recently I began to think more about death . Maybe because I'm 36, I'm in the middle of my life, and dying before reaching 70 isn't that unusual.
My son will have a huge amount of money and a better education than me. But every child should have such opportunities, not just my son. But it seems that education is only getting worse, and the gap between people is growing, which is absolutely unfair for a country that is considered democratic.
When I first met my wife (Anne-Marie Duff) on set, I realized I fell in love with her when I was 18 and she was on The Aristocrats.
Personal life[ | ]
James lived with classmate Emma Nelson for six years. After breaking up with her, he became addicted to alcohol and suffered a creative crisis in his career.
On the set of the series "Shameless"
he met actress Anne-Marie Duff. They got married in 2006[8]. On June 16, 2010, the couple had a son, Brandan.[9] In May 2021, it became known that the couple divorced[10], but maintained friendly relations. In order not to seriously traumatize her son, Anne-Marie and James still live together in North London during those periods when both are not filming.

McAvoy got the lead role in Split completely by accident.
The film "Split" is undeniably considered one of the best films ever made in the world. This is the creation of British director Night Shyamalan, who for a long time could not find a worthy candidate for the role of the main character. That was until he one day met James McAvoy in one of the night pubs. Despite the fact that the actor was resting at the time and was in high spirits due to the copious amounts of alcohol he drank, he was able to make a great impression on the director. Shyamalan saw in him all the character traits inherent in the hero, thanks to which the actor was able to play him perfectly.

James McAvoy was raised by his grandparents
Let's look at this in more detail. The actor was born in Glasgow in the family of a nurse and a builder. The parents were married for a relatively short time, and after several years of marriage they divorced. The boy, who was only 7 years old at that time, was given to his grandparents to be raised. His mother did not want to keep him due to ongoing health problems. This dealt a strong blow to the child’s psyche, so he did not speak to his father throughout his life, never being able to forgive him for leaving the family.
