Unique talent
Andrei Rostotsky, according to his type, played positive heroes. He gave all his characters a unique charm.
In addition to acting, Rostotsky was a professional stuntman. It is hardly possible to name such masters of combat using historical weapons.

Rostotsky's stunt skills began to develop when he served in the cavalry. His horse, under the guidance of a skilled rider, became the winner of regimental competitions, and then, together with Andrei, took part in the filming of the film.

April 21 marked the 96th anniversary of the birth of director
Stanislav Rostotsky
, known for the films “It Happened in Penkov,” “And the Dawns Here Are Quiet,” “We’ll Live Until Monday,” “Squadron of Flying Hussars.”
He had to endure many trials in his lifetime: the director went through the war, losing his leg and almost losing his life. His guardian angel for almost 50 years remained his wife, actress Nina Menshikova
, who refused many roles in order to pay more attention to her husband and son.
Andrei Rostotsky
continued the creative dynasty and became a famous actor and stuntman. Unfortunately, his life was tragically cut short a year after his father's death.

When the war began, Stanislav Rostotsky was studying at the Institute of Philosophy and Literature. In 1942 he was drafted into the army, and in 1943 he went to the front. In February 1944, the director was seriously wounded - he was hit by a tank and his leg was crushed. He lay in the swamp for 12 hours, no longer hoping for salvation. Fortunately, nearby soldiers heard his groans and pulled him out of the battlefield. But it was no longer possible to save his leg - in the hospital he was given a choice: either amputation or death. The operation was not very successful, and Rostotsky suffered from severe pain all his life. I had to change my dentures every year, and it took several weeks to get used to the new design. However, those around him did not even suspect that he had a prosthesis - apart from a slight limp, nothing else gave away his problem, and he was not used to complaining about his troubles.

The director did not like to talk about the war, but he embodied all his memories and experiences in his work. Perhaps that is why the film “The Dawns Here Are Quiet” turned out to be so heartfelt and lyrical. He himself was carried out of the battlefield by a woman about whom he spoke: “ At the front, her name was Anya Chegunova, then she began to bear the name of her husband - Beketov. She did not see the painting “And the dawns here are quiet...” - by that time she had already gone blind. I brought her to the studio and during the screening I told her what was happening on the screen... Thus, she was able to “watch” it. Anya knew that I made this film to a great extent as gratitude to her and as gratitude to all those women who helped many fighters stay alive

In 1944, Stanislav Rostotsky returned to Moscow and entered VGIK. From a young age, he found himself the center of attention in any company. He was temperamental, strong-willed, decisive - in a word, one of those who are called “real men.” At VGIK, many students were in love with him, he was predicted to marry Alla Larionova, the first beauty of the university. However, his chosen one was Nina Menshikova, who had neither crowds of fans, nor external splendor, nor the reputation of a femme fatale. For many, his choice was surprising, but he himself never regretted it. None of Rostotsky’s fans knew that he was disabled - Nina was the first to whom he admitted this. But this did not frighten the girl at all. When asked if she agreed to live with a disabled person, she replied: “All my life!”

«How many unnecessary, stupid, unreal things I would have endured in life if it weren’t for Ninka! How vulgar and senseless it would be! She's smart and a miracle to me
“, the director would later write in his diary. Menshikova was a talented actress and would have played many more roles if she had not believed that her most important role was that of a wife and mother. In addition, the scripts that were offered to her were very often rejected by Stanislav Rostotsky. And one day he even came and picked her up from filming, having learned that the film’s cameraman was in love with his wife.

In 1957, the couple had a son, who was named Andrei. Nina Menshikova admitted that the happiest moment in her life was that day in the maternity hospital when she was first brought to feed him. She tried to raise him the same way his father was - strong and courageous. Andrey followed in the footsteps of his parents and chose an acting profession for himself. In his father’s film “Squadron of Flying Hussars,” Andrei played the role of Denis Davydov, although in the credits he was listed under a different name - Stepan Stepnov. The father did not want everyone to know that the young actor was the son of a famous director, and for his son’s success to be explained only by their relationship. But Andrei Rostotsky gave no reason to worry - from a young age he became an independent creative unit and quickly gained popularity and love from the audience. He became famous for his roles in the films “Days of the Turbins”, “They Fought for the Motherland”, “The End of the Emperor of the Taiga”.

In addition to acting abilities, Andrei Rostotsky had good sports training - he was considered one of the best fencing experts in the country with historical weapons, and became a candidate for master of sports in equestrian eventing. The actor performed all the stunts on the set himself, and soon began staging them. He achieved considerable success as an actor, director and stuntman, and was also known as a survival school instructor. Together with its founder, he made an expedition through the caves of the Crimean mountains and made a documentary about it. In the film “They Fought for the Motherland,” Andrei performed his first stunt stunt, which reproduced the situation that happened during the war with his father: his hero was hit by a tank.

Andrei Rostotsky often chose the locations for stunts and inspected them himself before the start of the filming process. In May 2002, he was looking for a location for filming his film “My Border” in the area of a ski resort near Sochi. Relying on his professionalism and good sports training, he tried to climb the mountain slope at the “Maiden Tears” waterfall without insurance and fell from a great height. The tragic death of the 45-year-old actor and director was a big shock for everyone who knew him, but the biggest blow was for Nina Menshikova, who just a year before had buried her husband - Stanislav Rostotsky died of a heart attack. She outlived her husband by 6 years, and her son by 5.

Actress and director Svetlana Druzhinina said: “ They say that the number of steps, words, and sighs is measured out for everyone. Probably, his whole family lived such a stormy stream of life that, in an absolutely incredible way, the whole family very quickly either left for another world or left filmmaking

Having entered GITIS, Marina Yakovleva began to live in one of the institute’s dormitories. But the girl really didn’t like it there. Her roommate did not hesitate to bring gentlemen for the night. And in general, the atmosphere that reigned within the walls of the hostel was not conducive to studying.
