Childhood and youth
The hockey player was born on April 25, 1952 in the village of Orudevo (Moscow region) into a sports family. Vladislav's father, Alexander Dmitrievich Tretyak, served as a pilot and, according to the requirements of this profession, kept himself in good physical shape. Mother Vera Petrovna worked as a physical education teacher, was fond of bandy, and participated in city competitions.
It is not surprising that Vladislav was involved in various sports from an early age. So, the boy was interested in acrobatics, gymnastics, and swimming, but gradually hockey replaced other sports. The future goalkeeper was very fond of this “male” game, and his tall height and athletic build allowed him to realize his dream. Parents sent 11-year-old Vladislav to the hockey school at CSKA (Moscow), which marked the beginning of the teenager’s advancement into the world of big-time sports.

Goalkeeper Vladislav Tretyak in his youth
Vladislav managed to overcome the tough competitive selection and even surprised the team coaches with his ability to fearlessly rush the puck. At first Tretyak was appointed as a striker. At this time, the athlete did without a uniform, since there was not enough equipment for the players. When the question of finding a goalkeeper for the team arose, Vladislav proposed his own candidacy on the condition that he would receive real hockey clothes.
Tretyak’s father did not approve of his son’s hobby and even joked that the hockey player resembled a janitor with a broom. However, gradually the parents were forced to come to terms with Vladislav’s choice, especially since the guy quickly began to earn money.
In the summer of 1967, the talented goalkeeper attracted the attention of Anatoly Tarasov, the coach of CSKA. As a result, Vladislav began training with the players of the main team. At the same time, Tretyak, as a member of the youth team, won the title of Moscow champion and best goalkeeper. The ambitious guy persistently pursued his goal and at the age of 16 became part of the central team of the famous club.
Vladislav Tretyak: biography
Among the legendary hockey players is Vladislav Tretyak, who for many years was considered a unique goalkeeper - the “Russian wall”. He fearlessly repelled any attacks from opponents, being a support for his team. Dozens of the highest awards in prestigious competitions are evidence of the skill of an outstanding athlete. At the end of his sports career, Vladislav did not leave his favorite business, but became a successful coach, and later a politician.

Tretyak’s father for a long time did not approve of his son’s hobby and even joked that the hockey player reminded him of a janitor with a broom. However, gradually the parents were forced to come to terms with Vladislav’s choice, especially since the guy began to earn money quite quickly.

Carier start
In 1969, Vladislav made his debut with CSKA, and his first opponent was Moscow Spartak. The 185 cm tall guy’s abilities and fighting character soon secured him the position of main goalkeeper. At the same time, Tretyak participated in several international tournaments as a player of the USSR youth team. Soon the athlete moved to a new stage in his career, finding himself in the national team.
The talented hockey player became the reserve goalkeeper of the USSR national team in 1970. The same season brought Vladislav his first gold at the World Championships (Stockholm). The coaches appreciated Tretyak's level of play and desire to win. Therefore, the athlete played the next World Championship as the first goalkeeper.
Hockey critics and spectators considered Tretyak a phenomenal goalkeeper, and the results of the future Olympian confirmed the opinions of those around him. So, in 1972, the guy won Olympic gold in Sapporo, playing brilliantly in every match. At the same time, Vladislav turned out to be the youngest champion hockey player.

In addition, in 1972, a series of eight matches took place between the teams of the USSR and Canada. In fierce battles against Bobby Hull and other famous Canadians on the ice, along with forwards Valery Kharlamov, Alexander Yakushev, Boris Mikhailov, goalkeeper Tretyak was among the best. Later in the interview, the goalkeeper admitted that he could not catch the moment when Hull made his signature lightning throw.
Later, Vladislav participated in the next two super series, where the USSR team became the winner. In addition, 1975 brought the athlete one of the most exciting matches in his career against the Montreal Canadiens.
In 1976, the already famous hockey player was honored to carry the flag of the USSR national team at the opening of the Olympic Games, and soon became an Olympic champion again. Of course, the USSR team was considered the leader, but every match turned into a tough fight for victory. Thus, one of the most difficult matches was against the Czechoslovakian national team.
At the 1980 Olympics in the American village of Lake Placid, the USSR team, together with Vladislav, unexpectedly lost to the US team. Tretyak left the game long before the end of the match, and Vladimir Myshkin replaced the player. Then, according to the results of the matches, Vladislav had the lowest rate of reflected shots among the goalkeepers of the six leading teams.

But the failures turned out to be temporary - already in 1981 Tretyak became the winner of the Canada Cup. After 3 years, the athlete won Olympic gold for the third time in Sarajevo. Once again the main rival was the Czechoslovakian national team, but the Soviet team managed to win a landslide victory. At the same time, Vladislav set a record - the player was the first goalkeeper to become an Olympic champion three times.
The athlete’s last appearance on the ice took place in December 1984. Vladislav retired from hockey at the age of 32, although he was still full of strength and opportunity to win. But Tretyak decided to pay more attention to his family, which for a long time, due to constant competitions and training, remained in second place.
The hockey player managed to win ten world championships as part of the national team, receive nine gold medals at the European championships, and was declared champion of the USSR thirteen times. The player’s achievements also include 3 Olympic victories and gold at the Canada Cup.
Childhood and youth[ | ]
Vladislav Tretyak grew up as a sporty child. Following the example of his older brother, he tried swimming (in the Dynamo pool), then became interested in diving (jumping from a five-meter tower). Every Sunday, together with my parents, I went to the skating rink at the Gorky Central Park of Culture and Culture.
He started playing hockey at the age of 11, at the CSKA Youth Sports School on Leningradsky Prospekt, where his mother brought him. When selecting candidates, the coaches tested the ability to ride in reverse (Vladislav was already quite good at this technique). He was one of four accepted into the Moscow club. At first, Tretyak played as a striker, but he was embarrassed by the lack of a hockey uniform, which was not enough for everyone. At that time the team did not have a goalkeeper. Then he approached coach Vitaly Georgievich Erfilov and said that if he was given a real uniform, he would be a goalkeeper.
At the same time, the father did not approve of his son’s choice - he said that a hockey player with a stick looked like a janitor with a broom. I finally came to terms with my son’s hobby when he was 15-16 years old. Then Vladislav began to bring home the first money that he was given for games[4].
In the summer of 1967, CSKA coach Anatoly Tarasov became interested in the young goalkeeper. Tretyak began training with professional players. “I was proud that I lived in the CSKA boarding house on Peschanaya Street, that I was allowed to change clothes in the locker room next to the legendary hockey players,” wrote Tretyak[5]. In mid-July the team left for Russia, and Vladislav returned to the youth team.
Together with his team, Tretyak became the champion of Moscow, receiving the prize for the best goalkeeper. Even before this, at the European Championships, the USSR youth team, where Vladislav was the second goalkeeper, took second place. The performance was considered unsuccessful. But a year later, the USSR national team in Garmisch-Partenkirchen achieved success.
Played under number “20”[6].
In the 1968/69 season he made his debut for CSKA in a match against Spartak.
The first game in the national team was at the tournament for the prize of the Izvestia newspaper in 1969 in a match with Finland.
Coaching career
In 1984, Vladislav Aleksandrovich began working with CSKA as an employee of the international department. After two years, the champion already specialized in sports games, holding the position of deputy head of the relevant department. In the new decade, Tretyak was able to demonstrate his coaching abilities, which were appreciated abroad.
In the 90s, Vladislav worked for Bombardier (Canada), and later became a goalkeeper coach for the famous Chicago Blackhawks club. In the off-season, Vladislav Aleksandrovich worked so fruitfully with Ed Belfort that he managed to bring the player to a new professional level. Thanks to the skillful actions of his mentor, Belfort won the Vezina Trophy in 1991.
Tretyak twice trained goalkeepers of the Russian hockey team. The first time the Olympic champion performed these duties was in 1998, and the second time he was entrusted with such a responsible task in 2002. In 2004, the former athlete was one of the coaches of the Russian hockey team that competed for the World Cup.
Politics and sports
Back in the early 80s, the athlete became interested in politics and began to serve as a deputy of the Moscow City Council. In 2003, Tretyak was elected to the State Duma. In his new post, Vladislav Aleksandrovich was purposefully involved in the development of sports and physical culture, heading the relevant committee. Subsequently, as a member of United Russia, he was re-elected to the State Duma three times.
A significant event in the life of the Olympic champion was his appointment as head of the Hockey Federation in 2006. For Vladislav Alexandrovich, this post turned out to be extremely important, because it gave him the opportunity to make every effort to further develop his game on the ice. Also in 2011, Tretyak joined the board of trustees of the Arctic Cup, an international hockey tournament.

Vladislav Tretyak with his wife Tatyana
TV viewers remembered the athlete’s bright appearance at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. The hockey player took part in the opening ceremony of the games and on February 7 lit the Olympic flame together with the famous figure skater Irina Rodnina. Photos of two legends of Russian sports graced the pages of newspapers and magazines.
While working in the State Duma, the master showed himself to be an active politician, actively working on the further development of various sports. At the beginning of 2021, the next Vladislav Tretyak Cup was held, the opening of which the hockey legend traditionally came in person. The hockey tournament was held in the city of Orsk from February 18 to 23 with the participation of eight teams from Russia.
Phenomenal goalkeeper
From childhood, Vladislav was instilled with a love of sports, but his parents did not even suspect that sports would become the meaning of their son’s life. My father is a former military man and always kept himself in excellent physical shape. Her mother worked as a physical education teacher and was a player on the women's bandy team. Vladislav was involved in acrobatics, gymnastics, swimming, diving and hockey. Gradually, this sport completely captivated the guy and he decided to focus on the game.
At the age of 11, he became a student at the CSKA hockey school. At first, Vladislav was considered as a striker, because his speed and physical parameters made it possible to make a good career in this capacity. The guy trained hard, but at first he wasn’t even given a uniform, because there wasn’t enough for everyone. When the team began looking for a goalkeeper, Vladislav offered his candidacy on the condition that he be given a uniform. The coach decided to try the guy in this capacity.
Making Tretiak the goalkeeper was a great decision. It only took a few years for him to go from being an unknown student at the CSKA school to becoming the youngest Olympic champion. Vladislav played in every match of the national team and his team. There were several downturns in his career, but he was not used to giving up. The athlete went on the ice every time, proving that he was the best. This was eloquently evidenced by the statistics on the number of reflected pucks.
Vladislav Tretyak owns many records. One of the most significant is winning Olympic gold three times. No goalkeeper has managed this, either before or since. At the peak of his career, Vladislav decided to end his career. At that time he was 32 years old. Then he realized that he had won all the titles, but he paid practically no attention to his family. His career came first for him, and his family patiently waited for him from competitions and training camps. It's time to fix this.
Personal life
The goalkeeper’s personal life was happy and harmonious. The famous athlete got married in his youth - in 1972. The player's chosen one was Tatyana. The family had two children: son Dmitry (1973), who chose the profession of dentist, and daughter Irina (1976), who became a lawyer.
The heirs gave Vladislav Alexandrovich and his wife grandchildren: Maxim, Anna and Maria. Maxim decided to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps and become a hockey player. At one time he played for the Silver Sharks, and since 2011 he became a member of the CSKA team, where he served as a goalkeeper.

Vladislav Tretyak and his family
Vladislav and Tatyana live in the village of Zagoryansky (Moscow region). Here, in his free time, the hockey player managed to write several books about sports, in particular the fan-favorite “Coward Doesn’t Play Hockey.” In his works, the former Olympian shared his experience of playing hockey, talked about coaches and opponents, and also gave advice to aspiring hockey players.
In 2012, for the 60th anniversary of the best hockey goalkeeper of the twentieth century, a documentary film “Vladislav Tretyak. Goalkeeper without a mask." Also, the video “Two Lives of Vladislav Tretyak” is dedicated to the goalkeeper’s sports career. The deputy himself does not maintain social networks, but posts related to him are often posted on Instagram.

Vladislav Tretyak now
In March 2021, it became known that Vladislav Alexandrovich would leave the Council of the International Hockey Association. The former Olympian's resignation was ordered by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The organization explained the decision by the introduction of sanctions against Russian sports, which began to take effect after several major doping scandals.
According to these sanctions, Tretyak, as a member of the State Duma of Russia, must be suspended from working in the governing bodies of international sports federations for 2 years. Thus, the former goalkeeper cannot return to the organization until December 17, 2022. Previously, Vladislav Aleksandrovich served as a member of the IIHF Council since 2012 and was re-elected again after 4 years.
Former Vancouver, Florida and Russian national hockey player Pavel Bure was nominated to replace the athlete. Tretyak himself gave an interview about what was happening. The deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation noted that many considered the CAS decision to be incorrect and came out in support of it. Vladimir Aleksandrovich’s colleague Vyacheslav Fetisov noted that if membership in the International Hockey League is more important for the ex-goalkeeper, then he must surrender his parliamentary mandate.
