Karina Bagdasarova: “My father was stronger than a tiger in spirit and will”

CIRCUS, CIRCUS!

Mikhail took his daughter from Baku in the late 80s and began preparing her for a career as a circus performer. He already had adult tigers that were not accustomed to strangers. The first thing that happened to her when she entered the cage was an attack by an angry wild cat.

But dad gave her a stick and told her to overcome her own fear. If at that moment she had not been able to cope with the emotions of horror and fear, then the doors of the circus would have been closed to her forever.

He knew well the character of his daughter, who, out of a sense of contradiction, would do something that she would never have agreed to of her own free will.

Karina's debut as a trainer took place in 1991 in Chelyabinsk. She had just turned 18 years old, and the same number of tigers were waiting for her in the arena. The country's youngest wild animal tamer had a lot to be proud of.

Karina met the legendary tamer Nazarova at the very beginning of her career. The artist looked at the young girl for a long time, and then said that she had chosen one of the most difficult professions in the world.

At that moment, Bagdasarova was full of joy and enthusiasm, so she did not want to believe these words. But life put everything in its place.

Strangers and our own

Tigers sense someone else immediately. And during the television project “Circus with the Stars,” the tiger really hunted for Yana Churikova. During all rehearsals he lay there with the expression: “There’s another piece of meat walking around here, okay. I'll be patient." And during filming, he suddenly stood up, climbed onto the cabinet and was about to jump on Yana from behind. I had to drive him away. Tigers are like kittens: they need to try something new or mark it. We had one “comrade” who went out to the arena and, while walking to his place, peed on everyone who was sitting in the first row. No matter how we tried to wean him, it was all useless.

In general, my favorite animal is a dog. I love them for their loyalty. Because no matter what your mood is, no matter what happens to you, you come home, open the door, and the only person happy with you is the dog.”

Biography

Mikhail Ashotovich Bagdasarov was born on May 23, 1945 in the city of Baku. He is of Armenian origin, but after the collapse of the USSR he became a citizen of Russia. As mentioned above, Mikhail has loved animals since childhood. Apparently, he managed to find some kind of his own language with them, a clear mutual understanding. His love for them was so strong that even as a child Bagdasarov got a job in a circus, where he worked as a groom - he looked after horses.

The famous trainer Margarita Nazarova worked at the circus and saw future talent in him. This happened after an incident when predatory animals got out of their cages and began to walk around the hall. Young Mikhail was not at a loss and helped the experienced trainers drive them into the cage. It was then that Margarita took up his training and found a job after he turned 18 years old.

Later, Mikhail began to perform independently. In 1979, his first success came to him after he presented to the viewer his personal program “David of Sasunsky”. In this program, Bagdasarov brought various wild animals onto the circus stage. The “Tiger Show” program, which is presented in the form of an attraction with two dozen Ussuri tigers, became a truly signature program for him. Such a show began to be staged on the stage of the domestic circus in the early 90s. For his enormous contribution to the development of domestic circus art, in 1997 he was awarded the honorary title of People's Artist of Russia. Mikhail Bagdasarov is also the artistic director of the circus in Nizhny Novgorod.

GUILT

Ten years ago, something happened in the Bagdasarov family that they try not to remember. During a performance at the circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard, a tiger named Caesar attacked Arthur. Karina tried to fight off her brother, but the beast’s grip was iron.

Karina's father burst into the arena and saved the situation. He put the starter pistol into the tiger's mouth and pulled the trigger. The loud sound scared the tiger, he loosened his grip and ran to the edge of the arena.

Photo: Sharifulin Valery, TASS

The animal's aggression was provoked by its claw catching on the protective net. And when he rushed to Arthur on command, he felt a sharp pain. All the fury of the huge cat went to the one who was closest.

Arthur was taken to the hospital with serious wounds, and Karina was supposed to go to the arena the next day.

And although the circus director offered to take her a break, she refused. But she could not give up the principles on which she was raised.

Karina blamed herself for a long time for not being able to help her brother at the decisive moment. It seemed to her that everyone was condemning the trainer for her impotence; she read silent reproach in the eyes of her father and Arthur.

My brother returned to work only a year later. They left the attraction unchanged, although other circus performers did not understand the Bagdasarovs.

Caesar died five years after this tragedy, practically in the arms of Karina and Arthur. His brother fed him minced meat from the palm of his hand and cried that life had turned out this way. Once this beast almost killed him, and now Arthur is helping him die with dignity.

Today it is difficult to get tickets for the performances of the Bagdasarov family. They are eagerly awaited in any city, and among Russian trainers no one has been able to compare with Karina’s talent and artistry.

Fear and insurance

If you lose fear, you feel like the sea is knee-deep. But this is not possible with predators - they check for lice all the time. We have been communicating with them for so many years, and every time, as soon as they feel weak, pampering begins: coming from behind, trying to pick them up with their paws: what if it works out today?!

I have learned to control my fear, I know how to hide it and let it go when necessary so that I can run as fast as I can. One day, during a performance in China, the electricity went out in the entire neighborhood. Only God helped us get out unharmed. There were 13 tigers in the arena with us. And suddenly - pitch darkness. They are cats, and they immediately began to hunt each other. One tigress climbed up the net. The audience - 7 thousand Chinese - was blown away by the wind. And we were already trying to drive the animals into cages from behind the net. Then my beloved tiger died - he hit his head on the cage.

Tigers generally have very poor health. For them, any sneeze is a disaster. Right now, after a tour in China, two tigers died. One of them is the same Caesar who killed Arthur in 2006. When doctors performed an autopsy, it turned out that his liver and pancreas had completely decomposed. It is unclear why this happened to the tiger, who eats meat, does not drink, or smoke. Caesar was a very good cat. In Khabarovsk, when he was already lying dying, Arthur kissed him on the nose, stroked his head and said: “I almost died because of this asshole. And now he’s dying in my arms, and it’s terribly hard for me.” Arthur nursed him! Caesar had terrible rickets, so Arthur taught him to walk, fed him, gave him water. And the attitude towards Caesar after he bit Arthur did not change at all. Well, the child stumbled, anything can happen, he’s an animal! Caesar was supposed to perform with us in February in Moscow. But not fate...

Arthur's second wife - Karina

In 2007, he met a girl who became his second wife. Beautiful Karina and Arthur met with mutual friends. The young people immediately felt an interest in each other.

Initially, Karina did not know what her boyfriend was doing. One day Arthur invited her to the circus, and when he and his sister went out to the arena with tigers, the girl was shocked. She even had a desire to break up with him, but the man in love was able to convince her that their meeting was destiny.

The wedding took place after four years of dating. By that time, the girl was graduating from college. When the circus was on tour in Almaty, Arthur went on stage and proposed to his beloved. The hall burst into applause when the beauty agreed.

The wedding celebration of the 32-year-old groom and 22-year-old bride took place in 2010. A luxurious wedding cortege drove around the city. The bride and groom took many beautiful photographs near the Moscow State University building, on the river embankment. The celebration was celebrated in one of the most prestigious restaurants in Moscow.

At the wedding, everyone noted the happy faces of the newlyweds, their glowing eyes and sincere smiles. Karina and Arthur were very suitable for each other. Guests and relatives were sure that they would be together all their lives.

The Bagdasarovs are still happy. They never part. The trainer’s wife accompanies him on all tours, and his schedule is very busy, because they are eagerly awaited in many cities across the country.

As you know, Arthur’s sister, also Karina, got married 2 days later than her brother. Now there are two Karinas in the family, who are very friendly with each other. The artist’s wife is a lawyer by profession. Despite the fact that she follows her husband everywhere, she also minds her own business. This wise decision was made by their family council.

Having been the wife of a tiger tamer for many years, Karina was never able to get used to these predators. But she understands how much her husband loves his job and his predatory charges.

In 2015, the family went on vacation to Thailand on the island of Phuket. There an unpleasant situation happened to them, in which Karina was able to show her fighting character. During the accident, Arthur broke his leg. It is clear that none of them knew the local language and places where to turn for help. But the girl found the strength to figure out how to find a safe clinic and contact her family.

The ordeal without painkillers and antibiotics lasted for 6 hours. Nothing could break the girl’s brave spirit, not even her own bruises and wounds. The sweet, fragile and desperate life partner of the famous artist realized that there was no place for a weak-willed and cowardly woman next to him.

Story one. Karina Bagdasarova.

When we met, I knew that Karina was from the legendary Bagdasarov dynasty, an Honored Artist of Russia and a world-famous tiger trainer. But our real “acquaintance” began after the performance. It spun, spun and carried this amazing woman into the vast world of a whirlwind. A world that is thoroughly permeated with love and deep wisdom. But first things first…

When was the last time you went to the circus? They laughed at the jokes of the clown, watched with bated breath the dangerous trick of the acrobat and wondered how the illusionist managed to saw a man in half and put him back together again? Did you feel a slight fear when the Bagdasarovs entered the arena surrounded by huge tigers? The cats jump through rings of fire, stand on their hind legs, and Karina catches the eye of each pet and quietly whispers to him:

"Thank you". Once in the auditorium, the thought involuntarily comes to mind that, like a doctor’s prescription, we, adults, need to go to the circus even more. To disconnect from problems for at least two and a half hours and believe in magic again.

Karina is a star by definition. The point here is not about fame and popularity, but about her ability to give Good to others. And even if someone actively speaks out that a tiger in a cage is cruel, for me, eating meat and wearing fur coats, clutching a python wallet in your hands, is no less ruthless towards nature. By the way, Bagdasarova is a vegetarian, her wardrobe includes clothes made of faux fur, and a beautiful handbag on her shoulder is made of bright and beautiful eco-leather. She founded the Right to Live charity for animals living outside the wild. And we talked about her own life and her truth the whole evening.

Zhanna: So after all, Karine? Or Karina? “Rejoicing” from Armenian, “sweetheart” and “darling” from Latin. Who are you and what are you really like?

Karina: My dad named me Karine and they said this name only once, when they issued a birth certificate. Growing up, I began to understand that everyone only calls me Karina, and there is often confusion with documents. So the decision came to change one letter and officially become Karina. As for how I am...Probably more “jubilant”.

Zhanna: How do you name your tigers?

Karina: Whatever you name the ship, that’s how it will sail, so we have long had a tradition - we give each tiger cub a name in honor of its strong and talented predecessor. So, in our circus there are already four Zeus and Cupid. You know, like the Ural is the first, the Ural is the second. I will say more, I even chose a name for my son very carefully and for a long time. I wanted him to become a man with a kind soul and a fair heart, strong, like a hero from epics. That's why Nikita.

Zhanna: Each person has his own character. And what about tigers too?

Karina: Of course! For example, our Ural is very touchy. If you suddenly talk to him the wrong way, look at him the wrong way, he will be offended, and you won’t do anything about it until he moves away. Wayward, very Argo. This friend is already 20 years old, which by human standards is approximately 80 years old. His dad once bought him at the Karaganda Zoo, and he is from Kazakhstan. He still performs and shows us his character.

Zhanna: You talk about them as people. Are animals really that similar to us?

Karina : They are my friends, partners, children. I will never call them beasts. Our lives are so intertwined that there were times when I had to feed little tiger cubs every three hours, spending more time with them than with my own child. She raised them.

Zhanna: Are you raising your son and tigers differently?

Karina: Absolutely the same. Here you need only one thing - love, understanding, patience. And discipline. The word "training" is a synonym for order. Without it you cannot succeed. I was also brought up in strictness. I had to be strong, resilient and not show my tears to anyone. I still don't know how to do this. And I got into the circus at my dad’s request. I was always attracted to ballet, I dreamed of dancing, but circumstances were such that my dream was not destined to come true. This is why I encourage everyone to listen to their children. They came to this world to go their own way. A child should not make your dreams come true. Your wishes. This breaks fate. We often live a life that is not our own and do not follow our own path, and then we do not understand why difficulties arise, why we are unlucky. And the answer is that the road is simply not yours, the wrong direction. I really want my son to choose his profession himself. And I will support any of his decisions.

Zhanna: Karina, if it were possible to return time, would you change everything and return your dream?

Karina: No. I don't regret anything. This is all my life. My lessons. It happens, sometimes it’s sad that not everything depends on you, you don’t always have the strength to do everything... I began to communicate with tigers by inheritance, and so it happened. But with my heart I chose a little Spitz, and this sunny dog in our house is a complete reflection of me.

Zhanna: Who will continue the Bagdasarov dynasty?

Karina : Perhaps it will be the son of my brother Arthur. You know, continuing our work doesn’t necessarily mean going out to the arena with the tigers, it could be working in my foundation. We have never had and never will have animals from the wild in our circus. I will explain, there are animals that, for various reasons, ended up in the human world. In the zoo and safari parks, they are already accustomed to conditions where it is difficult to exist without human help. Understand that they will not be able to live in another habitat; they cannot cope without people. The point of my “Right to Live” foundation is that our tigers provide assistance to their relatives living outside the wild. We have several programs - we help zoos. Renew enclosures and support with funds. Another program of the Red Button Foundation is a staff of veterinarians who, with all the equipment, are ready to go to the site and provide medical assistance. But the most important direction is the construction of a special complex for animals, which will allow them to meet old age with dignity. They are like people. And after finishing their career, they need their own home, with a hospital and care. Tigers live 20, maximum 25 years, and more than once I had to experience the burning pain of saying goodbye to them. There were those who touched your heart so much that you seemed to feel, he is not even a tiger, he is a man... I can’t talk about this without tears...

Zhanna: Karina, I know that you are a believer. I also know that you, as a woman, went through extremely difficult periods in your life, did faith help you cope with them?

Karina: My son Nikita came to me for a very long time... I literally begged for this child and really wanted to become a mother. Once upon a time something bad happened to me and I lost my baby, it was not easy to come to my senses. I just lay in the hospital, didn’t want to see anyone and looked at the walls. And suddenly I saw a dream. There was a curly-haired boy in it and he said: “Mommy, don’t worry, I’ll come back to you soon.” I believed it. And she began to wait for him.

Zhanna: Do you believe in omens?

Karina: These are probably no longer signs, but traditions in the circus. I respect them. I will never sit with my back to the playpen, I will never chew sunflower seeds at work. But I have a special attitude towards signs. Once, in my youth, before a performance, I discovered that I was not wearing the cross that I always wore. I started to panic so much that I was ready to cancel the performance. And it was then that the understanding came that this was impossible. All your signs, everything you believe in, all your guardians and talismans can be in you. In your heart. Moreover, the worst sign is when a black cat crossing the road breaks a mirror with an empty bucket. And I believe in signs. Life constantly gives us clues. In any random phrase you hear, in a ticker, in a song on the radio... The answers are everywhere.

Zhanna: Karina, you have been with tigers for many years. Tell me, have you become anything like them?

Karina: I even associate myself in some way with the tigress. I don't like big companies or noisy parties. I'm not bored with myself. Very freedom-loving. I will always protect both my cub and my family to the last, but I will never violate their borders. And being always in an environment where one must not let one’s guard down, in an atmosphere of danger, I long ago learned to make decisions quickly and swiftly. I am always ready for extreme situations and react to them instantly. I am grateful to my profession for this quality.

Zhanna: Don’t you think that animals are sometimes more honest than us?

Karina : Yes. Sometimes you don't know what to expect from a person. They can confess their love to you, give you compliments, but betray you behind your back. Animals have very pure energy; they are not infected with qualities such as envy, pride, hatred or meanness. They don't know them. They have instincts. And it is impossible to deny that an animal has no soul.

Zhanna: Karina, this conversation was very sincere, and I am grateful to you for it. And at the end of the conversation, since I am a tarot reader, I ask you to draw three cards from my deck and answer the questions, arcana.

1. The High Priestess. Map of wisdom and knowledge.

Zhanna: What can you teach others and what would you like to learn?

Karina: ... rather than teach, but advise. Let everyone live their own lives. Learn to listen to yourself. Accept and love. But I would like to learn one thing: to be less susceptible; it is still difficult for me not to react to negativity. I know that it is our emotions that are then reflected on both the physical body and the psyche, and it is important to be calmer. I'm studying.

2. Justice. Map of Heavenly Law.

Zhanna: What is fundamentally important to you in life? What can you not do and what can you forgive others?

Karina: When I was young, I had two colors, black and white. Only with age did I understand that everyone has their own truth and their own reasons for acting one way or another. Now I have stopped judging people. Even if someone betrayed you, you don’t know what prompted him to do it and whether the person could have acted differently. The only thing that I do not accept and will never be able to take it calmly is the horror called “pedophilia”.

3. Chariot. Traffic map of the new road.

Zhanna: If it happened that you ended up in an unknown country, on some completely unknown planet, whose inhabitants know nothing about you, what would you tell them about yourself when introducing yourself?

Karina: Sincerity in relationships without any social status is very important to me. Without regalia. You won’t believe it, but in Moscow there is no better guide for me than a city homeless person. I can calmly go up and ask him for directions, for example, and when you talk to him and ask for help or a question as an equal, you raise him to your level. And maybe this will somehow help him believe in himself and feel needed. I often experiment and don't introduce myself when I go to beauty salons or when I appear in a new society, I want people to treat each other with respect, no matter what. It doesn’t matter here whether you are deserved or a star. Therefore, I answer your question. If I travel incredibly far and appear in front of other people, I will only say one thing: “Hello. I come to you with Peace." That's all they need to know about me.

And that’s what Karina is all about. Shining in the circus arena, brave next to tigers, gentle near her son and sincere in all her manifestations. We drank tea for a long time after the interview. She showed me photos on her phone and special shots taken several years ago. Then Karina, seeing the destroyed monument on the grave of the founder of the Fontanka Circus Gaetano Ciniselli, decided to completely restore and restore it. At your own expense, of course. My question is, why did she do this? She replied: “I promised him.” I didn’t even bother to wonder how she communicates and makes promises to a person living in another century. She's just different. It’s like in Arbenina’s song: “... maybe my blood composition is a little closer to the stars.” It's about her. About them. Star people.

Thanks for this story. For this conversation.

Theater career

In 1979, actor Bagdasarov began working at the Obraztsov Puppet Theater. But soon he returns to the Theater Studio on Krasnaya Presnya. On the stage of this theater, Mikhail Bagdasarov, whose biography is eventful, played in many performances. This is the role of Count Turgenev in the theatrical production “I came to give you freedom” and others.

But a year later, Mikhail Sergeevich moved to the Sphere Theater Studio. It is known that, since 1988, he has been performing as part of the troupe of Oleg Tabakov’s theater studio. He also successfully participated in the musicals of the cabaret theater “The Bat”.

But still, viewers began to recognize him after he starred in an advertisement for Invite dry juices in the nineties, where he said only one phrase about adding water.

Career

After college, the girl firmly decided to go to work in the circus, so she went to her father in the capital of Russia. At the age of 18, the girl began acting as a trainer of eighteen tigers.

In October 1991, a new show appeared, in which Karina Bagdasarova was also the main character. After this, the girl entered the Institute of Culture, became a director and began directing projects herself.

In many photos, Karina Bagdasarova is captured with her favorite animals. In 2003, Karina became an Honored Artist of Russia. In 2010 she received the Order “For Service to Russia”.

In 1992, Karina Bagdasarova’s brother, Arthur, joined the circus.

Is freedom necessary?

– In some European countries, public performances with animals are prohibited. What do you think about it?

– All my life, the Russian circus was famous for its acts with animals. And I always advise those who are dissatisfied to simply pass by. Some people reproach me for allegedly torturing animals with my training, but this is not so. In our attraction, all the animals are local, that is, they were born and raised in the circus. At the same time, some people simply do not understand that animals that grew up and were raised with people will not be able to survive in the wild. For example, here's a true story: a photographer raised a bear and then released him into the wild. The animal eventually began to raid residential properties and attack people because it had not learned to survive without humans.

Animals that were born and raised by humans will not be able to survive in the wild. Photo: AiF/ Elena Sklyarova

– And now it’s fashionable to keep wild animals in apartments...

– I am categorically against predators at home. They are unpredictable and life-threatening. For example, now we are working with 8 tigers, and we are managing them only because we have convinced them that we are stronger. From a very early age, we forbid them to play with us, stop fights between tigers, and control them with our voices. Untrained people do not have all the knowledge necessary for training, so the consequences can be irreparable.

– That is, wild animals cannot be pacified, and sooner or later they will still show their predatory nature?

– You can’t be 100% sure of anything, but training helps

This is as important as parenting for children. And ill-mannered children and animals are sometimes dangerous to themselves and others

But while it is possible to explain to a child what danger is, it is not possible to explain to animals.

At the same time, in childhood, we listen more to strict but fair teachers, rather than to evil dictators and kind mumblers. Therefore, moderation is needed in everything. When a tiger cub is less than a year old, we take a closer look at it, study its inclinations and habits, and then begin to teach it little by little. To release a ready-made artist into the arena, you need to spend about three years.

Karina Bagdasarova grew up in a circus among animals. Photo: AiF/ Elena Sklyarova

– Where do you get inspiration from to constantly come up with new tricks?

– They often come up with performances themselves. For example, an animal accidentally does some tricks, and the trainer notices this in time and praises it. During one of the rehearsals, we gave the tigers the task of jumping over a barrier. And it turned out very funny when each animal behaved differently: one jumped over an obstacle, the second crawled under it, and the third pushed away the obstacle. We liked this moment and included it in our tour program.

– You travel a lot. What do you think of our city and its inhabitants?

ALL ABOUT THE FATHER

Like many circus people, the children of trainer Bagdasarov grew up in the arena. When they got older, they were allowed to participate in performances. Together with the artists, they always went to the parade alley, and Karina proudly carried the little leopard.

Photo: Sharifulin Valery, TASS

She still remembers how one day she was walking and tripped, but she didn’t let go of her dad’s pet. The man did not allow his daughter to cry and all his life he told her that she was the strongest and bravest.

“From a very young age, he raised me as a tiger tamer,” recalls Bagdasarova.

The founder of the dynasty himself was not from the circus, but once helped the famous artist Margarita Nazarova drive tigers into a cage. The circus performer appreciated Mikhail's courage and took him on as an assistant. They worked together for almost ten years until he created his own attraction.

He had no doubt that the children would continue his work, but Karina had her own plans. As a child, her mother sent her to a choreographic school, where talented graduates were accepted into Igor Moiseev’s ensemble. The girl really counted on this, although her father did not like it.

“Mom knew that I would still work in the circus,” says Bagdasarova. “But she said she wanted to be proud of her daughter and see how beautifully I move in the arena.”

From ballet to the arena

Anastasia Medvedeva, AiF-Novosibirsk correspondent: Karina, I know that you dreamed of becoming a dancer. Why did you change your life path?

Karina Bagdasarova: I never wanted to work in a circus, especially with animals, I graduated from a choreographic school and dreamed of a place in Igor Moiseev’s ensemble. But fate turned out that in Baku, where we lived then, the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict began, and we had to urgently leave. Then my father told me: “End your dancing, it’s time to get down to serious business.” At that time I was a fragile, airy girl, but I began to train wild animals. To some extent, my father, of course, broke me, but now I am grateful to him for that.

– How can a trainer overcome his fear of wild cats?

– I came to the circus at the age of 15, and my dad first sent me to the stables with a scoop and scraper. In three years, I went all the way - from cleaning up after animals to training, and learned many new professions. This was my father’s principled position, and I agree with it - after all, every general was once a soldier. During my internship, I was once attacked by a tigress, who was usually the friendliest creature. The father was not taken aback and fired a noise cartridge in time to scare away the animal. And then he sent me off to deal with the wild cat. I knocked on the cage with a stick, the tigress pretended to be scared, and that’s where we parted ways. I think that was a turning point in my life, and if I had not entered the cage immediately after the attack, I would never have done it again. By the way, we later became friends with this predator.

Tamers cope with predators because they managed to convince the animals that humans are stronger. Photo: AiF/ Elena Sklyarova

– What characterizes the work of a tiger tamer in the first place?

– The main feature of our profession is the absence of room for error. Any wrong move can send a person to heaven. This is all so scary that we always give 100% during work.

News on the topic Circus tigress gave birth to twins on the way to Novosibirsk - Has your profession somehow affected your character?

- Of course, and very strongly. For example, certain behavioral habits interfered with my personal life for a long time. I spoke to men briefly and clearly: “I said it, that’s the point.” Then, of course, I realized that this method does not work very well. By the way, my husband is also untrained (laughs). I never raise my voice to him. In general, at home I turn into a calm, homely woman. After all, among my family I don’t need to prove my leadership and strength. There, I am primarily a wife and mother, so I enjoy cooking and doing other household chores.

– Must a person have some character traits to deal with wild animals or can such skills be acquired?

– My mother dreamed of a son, and I was born. Therefore, from an early age I was brought up in a Spartan way. For example, I wore men’s Soviet trousers to the garden; I was not allowed to show weakness. This was probably why I was ashamed to cry. And when they told me “you can’t”, I always gained strength for a new breakthrough. Therefore, I think everything is individual.

Karina Bagdasarova: “My father was stronger than a tiger in spirit and will”

On May 4, the founder of the dynasty of tiger trainers, Mikhail Bagdasarov, died of coronavirus. He left two heirs, continuers of the business - son Arthur and daughter Karina. The younger generation of artists did not have everything smoothly in the field of training.

Karina Bagdasarova told EG about her father, brother and her charges – the tigers.

— Karina, how were you not afraid to go out into the arena after the injuries your brother Arthur received from tigers?

– Being angry at a tiger is wrong. I was angry with myself that I could not protect Arthur, although I beat the tiger with a stick with all my might. But most often the trainer himself is to blame for all emergencies, and not the predator. The person is to blame. This is the first rule of the trainer. The point is that you must not break the distance between the tiger and the trainer, because this is mortally dangerous. True, I don’t remember a single performance without at least the slightest deviation from safety rules. Moreover, in tiger training this distance has long become conditional. By the way, not many people know that the stick serves the trainer precisely in order to maintain this mandatory distance of one and a half meters. But we often take our stick not by the end, but by the middle, reducing the distance between ourselves and the predator. Moreover, we take risks consciously, because the closeness of the artist with the tiger excites the viewer, causes him delight, strong emotions, which, in fact, is what he comes to the circus for today.

– Does this really mean that all the Bagdasarovs belong to that category of fatalists?

– Up until the moment I became a mother, it was easy to make me “weak.” My father teased me: “You are jam, and you won’t be able to do this or that trick.” - “I can’t do this?” Despite the danger, I did things that are even scary to remember. But after the birth of the child, I became more prudent. Moreover, I can easily agree: “Yes, I can’t, I have little guts.” Because I understand perfectly well that I need my son alive and well, and that for his sake I work, earn money, and go to the arena. If God has given me a child, then at all costs I must bring him to the proper level. Whereas my brother Arthur is a fatalist. He wants a real fight, a sharp fight, intense passions. Moreover, if I behave with tigers more like a trainer, then Arthur acts as a tamer. These are slightly different methods - to train and tame. The brother deliberately enters into a competition with the predators to find out which of them is stronger, more resilient, and more cunning. For this, our dad calls Arthur “another tiger.”

– Who is your famous father, People’s Artist of Russia Mikhail Bagdasarov: a trainer or a tamer?

“Dad skillfully combined both a trainer and a tamer, so he is an expert in his field, a true master, a genius. Arthur and I are far from dad. Dad was such a wall that I could completely relax and forget about the danger. And with my brother I have to be doubly attentive and careful. Because of Arthur's impulsiveness, his impudence, I have to calculate situations that might happen.

– Karina, do tigers make a difference between a male trainer and a female one?

– Indeed, the tigers have a different attitude towards Arthur and me, which, however, is quite explainable by our behavior. If I behave softly, gently with predators, calming them down, then Arthur acts as a gladiator. This is such a game - he “turns on” the tigers, excites them, and I turn them into “soft and fluffy”. That is, I have a female role, and my brother has a purely male role. Of course, it is Arthur who performs the most difficult tricks, which he masterfully performs. This doesn't mean that I can't do the same things as Arthur, but he is a man, a warrior, a hunter, and a winner in the end, isn't he? It seems to me that this is exactly how it should be both in ordinary life and in a cage with tigers.

– This tactic – kind Karina and daring Arthur – was chosen by your father, wasn’t it?

“Our beloved daddy had an incredibly complex character. He is often angry, aggressive, merciless, in a word, a real tyrant. By the way, unlike Arthur, I didn’t want to be a tiger trainer at all. I graduated from the choreographic school in Baku and dreamed of devoting my life to dancing. But one fine day, dad called me to his place in Chelyabinsk and said that I should enter the cage with the tigers. Now I am able to object to my dad and even resist him, but then, at 15 years old, I was afraid of him like fire.

– How quickly did you manage to find a common language with predators?

“Only at first I cleaned the cages, walked the animals, and looked after them. And not only for tigers, but also for horses, donkeys, llamas, ducks and chickens. In short, I started from the very beginning, just as my father did. And when I entered the cage with the tigers for the first time, the tame tigress, who allowed herself to be petted by everyone, mercilessly pounced on me, ending up at my feet in one leap. Dad had to scare her with a pistol shot, and then hand me a stick and order: “Go and deal with her yourself.” And I dutifully trudged into a cage with 18 monsters, so to speak, to deal with it.

– Karina, judging by your stories, your father appears to be a monster, not a tiger?

“We simply can’t do it any other way.” The tiger must feel that the person is energetically stronger than him, and only then is he able to submit. A predator cannot be tamed by physical force. He bows only to the strength of character, strength of spirit, will and the enormous thirst for life, which he feels with his whole being. You saw what a rock our dad is, what power and energy he has. He completely fills the entire space, leaving no room for others. If a person is weaker than him, he simply shrinks into a ball. It seems to me that if you connect wires to dad, then an entire power plant can operate from his energy.

– Was your father sure that his children inherited his exceptional fortitude?

– Arthur has absolutely the same character as his dad. Maybe dad is more intelligent than Arthur. In addition, he likes to break the rules, to do things differently, in his own way, which, as this accident showed, he does not always get away with. He is such a wayward comrade who does not follow the beaten path, but seeks out his own path. Moreover, Arthur belongs to that rare category of people for whom everything comes very easily, because God has endowed them with versatile talent. Arthur can do everything in the circus: he is an excellent rider, a virtuoso juggler, a tightrope walker, a tightrope walker, and an illusionist, in a word, a jack of all trades. 10 rehearsals are enough for him to learn how to master each skill. I admit that my brother’s inherent ease always amazed me, because I achieved everything through hard work. As for my character, I grew up like a boy. At least, I didn’t know what bows, knee-high socks with bells, dresses were, not to mention dolls and mother-daughter games. Our mother really didn’t want her to have a girl, and apparently she didn’t want it so much that my character was clearly not feminine. By the way, dad once admitted that as soon as I was born, he dreamed of making me a second tiger trainer, Margarita Nazarova, who was his teacher, mentor, and idol. So my fate was predetermined from birth.

– In the Bagdasarov family, a cult of male strength and power has been established. Surely your mother had a hard time because of such patriarchy?

- Our mother, as they say, “Mama don’t worry”! She is our main critic, judge and generally the thunder of the family. Imagine, our domineering dad walks in front of mom on his hind legs! But with such a strong character, my mother never watches our performances, because she is very nervous and afraid for us. And my mother learned about the tragedy with Arthur from television news, because we simply did not dare to tell her about it. By the way, my husband, also a circus performer, magician and illusionist Anton Krasilnikov, ignores my performances for the same reason.

– What punishment did the tiger Caesar, who attacked your brother, receive?

– Animals, like children, understand punishment only if it comes immediately after the incident. Just like a small child will forget in four hours what he did, so will a predator. Moreover, only the person who suffered should be punished. But by the time Arthur leaves the hospital, the tiger will have forgotten what he did. Besides, by and large, he is a predator - and that says it all.

– Are you saying that the trainer should be responsible for tamed tigers?

– In general, this is such stupidity, as if man is the king of nature, and nature is not a temple, but a workshop. Why on earth did man begin to call himself the king of nature? Just because he undertook to enslave her? But in the place where too much aggression and negativity accumulates, nature instantly responds with cataclysms. Therefore, we must learn to simply live and enjoy nature, animals, flowers. After all, animals have a completely different energy - pure, pristine, healing. Animals are not cluttered with stupid information like people.

Artur Bagdasarov: tiger attack

Our hero is a professional trainer with extensive experience. But even such people are not immune from dangerous moments. In June 2006, something happened that Artur Bagdasarov could never forget. The circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard hosted a performance with the participation of predators.

The compere announced the next number. Famous trainers, the Bagdasarovs, entered the arena. Sister and brother performed with ten tigers. Mikhail Bagdasarov was behind the cage. He had a pistol in his hands. The artists had to perform two tricks. Arthur wanted to use a stick to push Caesar the tiger towards other predators. But the guy approached him too quickly. When our hero swung, the tiger caught his hand with its paw. It didn't end there. The predator instantly crushed the guy under him and squeezed his head with his teeth. Mikhail Bagdasarov ran into the cage. He fired his pistol several times into the air. And only after the fifth bullet did the tiger Caesar let Arthur go.

Bagdasarov Jr. was taken to the clinic at the Institute. Sklifosovsky. About a hundred stitches were placed on his head. Many wounds from the claws and teeth of a predator were found on Arthur's body. The positive thing is that the tendons and nerves remained intact, otherwise the trainer could have remained disabled.

And what happened to the tiger that rushed at Arthur? He was removed from his number. There was no talk of any shooting of the animal. According to experts, the artist himself violated safety regulations.

It took Artur Bagdasarov several months to restore his health. Then the young man continued to perform in the same arena with predatory animals. One can only envy his fortitude and courage.

Arthur Bagdasarov: short biography

The well-known Russian trainer Artur Bagdasarov was born on December 27, 1978 into a famous family of circus performers - trainer Mikhail Ashotovich and acrobat Irina Nikolaevna.
At that time, the family lived in Nizhny Novgorod (formerly Gorky). Arthur's mother is a master of sports in acrobatics. The desperate circus performer presented the public with hundreds of complex and at the same time beautiful tricks. Mikhail Bagdasarov is the founder of the circus dynasty. Karina, Arthur’s older sister, also decided to continue her father’s work.

Work in the circus

Watching his father work, Arthur did not think about his future vocation. Already in 1992, he entered the arena as a trainer. But early in his career he worked with donkeys. Work with predators began 2 years later.

One day he, his father and sister entered a cage where there were 15 tigers at the same time. This happened in the arena of the Kazan Circus. It was from that time that the guy decided to work with these amazing and majestic animals.

A little about Karina and her family

Karina admits that her and her brother’s childhood was not the easiest, but interesting. They almost all the time did not get out of the circus, which seemed to them like a fairy tale kingdom. They loved to climb around the back streets, hide in animal enclosures, and hear about terrible incidents in the arena. The children were with their parents almost all the time and toured with them.

Parents almost never took their children to social events, since Arthur and Karina had bad personalities. For example, a girl could calmly pick her nose in the presence of other people, but Arthur always ran around with his pants half-down.

Karina Bagdasarova admits that she has a complex character; sometimes she cannot control herself. Only her husband Denis Kozyr can do this, who not only pacifies his beloved wife, but also understands her.

Cities that evoke pleasant feelings in Karina: Nizhny Novgorod, because she was born there, Yekaterinburg, where she was on tour with her parents as a child, Saratov, where Denis’s parents live. And, of course, Moscow, which is as “mad” as Karina herself.

Personal life of Karina

Karina Bagdasarova met her love in the circus - she married the famous circus magician Anton Krasilnikov.

Sometimes the famous couple performed together, Karina tried to help her husband in his performances. Moreover, she admits that with tigers in the arena it’s not as scary as in some of her husband’s rooms. It happened that the magician's wife fell from a height during rehearsals. Anton Krasilnikov says that he certainly won’t be able to find a more faithful and reliable actress for his numbers anywhere.

The couple had a son, who was named Nikita. Together with his mother, he went on tour from the age of three months.

Despite the tender feelings, after twelve years of marriage the couple broke up. Karina also met her second love in the arena. At the “Circus with the Stars” project she met acrobat Denis Kozyr. He courted her for a long time, and eventually melted the trainer’s heart.

Bagdasarova, Sofia Andreevna

Sofia Bagdasarova was born in Moscow. Graduated from the Department of History and Theory of Art, Faculty of History, Moscow State University. For more than 10 years he has been professionally engaged in journalism in the field of culture (RIA Novosti, Kultura.RF, Afisha, Colta, Vogue and others). Since 2021 he has been writing for the Russian publication The Art Newspaper.

Blog of a Mischievous Art Historian

Since 2004, Sofya Bagdasarova has been running the “Blog of a Mischievous Art Historian” on LiveJournal (shakko-kitsune.lj.ru). The blog became widely known in 2021; its first popular column was “Disgusting Art Criticism”:

Then the column “Questions about art” gained considerable popularity:

At the end of 2021, Sofia Bagdasarova’s blog, with 40-50 thousand views per day (5-6th place in the overall LJ top), was awarded the NeForum Awards in the “Best Longread” category.

"Disgusting Art"

A reproduction of Paolo Veronese’s painting “Leda and the Swan” was used for the cover of Sofia Bagdasarova’s book “Disgusting Art.” After the success of the blog, representatives of the Eksmo publishing house approached Sofia Bagdasarova with a proposal to write a book. Sofia reworked and adapted some of the blog materials for printing, and about half of its volume consisted of new texts. The guideline for the author was the style of “General History, processed by Satyricon,” written by Teffi, Arkady Averchenko and other classics of Russian humorous prose of the early 20th century. Bagdasarova’s book retells ancient Greek myths about cannibals, transvestites, and husband-killers in a humorous, modernized way. The publication is equipped with color reproductions of Rubens, Michelangelo, the Pre-Raphaelites and other artists on relevant topics, as well as serious scientific comments.

Disgusting Art became a bestseller, but received mixed reviews from readers and critics. Commentators noted an unexpected discrepancy between the impressions of Sofia’s texts published on the Internet and on paper, as well as a compromise in the processing of the material, when sharp and relevant jokes from the blog were replaced with “bearded” puns.

Literary critic Konstantin Milchin stated that Sofia Bagdasarova’s book is “an Amikoshonian retelling of ancient Greek mythology in the style of the Full House program,” while admitting that “the author of the book is actually a really cool educator: she maintains an excellent blog on LiveJournal, where she is competent and knowledgeable.” “Talks about painting with real wit.”

Reviewer Vladimir Bogdanov is more favorable:

Writers Alexander Arkhangelsky and Alexander Gavrilov included the book “Disgusting Art” in the “long list” of candidates for the Enlightenment Prize for 2021. Gavrilov justified this inclusion, finding in the reduced presentation of the material the main significance of the book:

However, Sofia Bagdasarova’s book was not included in the “short list” of the award.

“Apocalypse in art. Journey to Armageddon"

In October 2021, the Bombora branch of the Eksmo publishing house published Sofia Bagdasarova’s second book, “Apocalypse in Art. Journey to Armageddon." The publication is the complete text of “The Revelation of John the Theologian” (“Apocalypse”), equipped with a large number of color reproductions of works by past artists, illustrating the text as fully as possible.

Mikhail Bagdasarov’s wife – photo

Mikhail Bagdasarov is not willing to give interviews on the topic of his wife - for him, personal life is a purely private matter. We only know that her name is Irina, she is Russian by nationality, and was a former acrobat. However, everyone probably knows their children, whom Mikhail Bagdasarov and his wife waited for quite a long time - seven long years. He calls the moment when his first daughter Karina was born his true happiness.

Karina was truly a long-awaited child, but Mikhail Bagdasarov and his wife wanted more children to appear in their family. And five years later, a new addition was waiting for the family - a son was born, who was named Arthur. Also in the Bagdasarov family there are three grandchildren: Richard, Nikita and Mark.

Karina and Arthur became glorious successors of their father’s work - now together they form an entire circus dynasty involved in training. This dynasty is one of the most famous and authoritative on the domestic circus stage. Being public figures, they often fall under the guns of video cameras. However, it is quite difficult to find a photo of Mikhail Bagdasarov’s wife on the Internet - she leads a closed lifestyle and maintains the family rear.

An excerpt characterizing Bagdasarov, Karina Mikhailovna

Meanwhile, according to the disposition: “die erste Colonne marschiert” [the first column is coming (German)], etc., the infantry troops of the late columns, commanded by Bennigsen and controlled by Toll, set out as they should and, as always happens, arrived somewhere , but not where they were assigned. As always happens, people who had gone out cheerfully began to stop; Displeasure was heard, a sense of confusion was heard, and we moved somewhere back. The adjutants and generals who rode by shouted, got angry, quarreled, said that they were completely in the wrong place and were late, scolded someone, etc., and finally, everyone gave up and went off only to go somewhere else. “We’ll come somewhere!” And indeed, they came, but not to the right place, and some went there, but were so late that they came without any benefit, only to be shot at. Toll, who in this battle played the role of Weyrother at Austerlitz, diligently galloped from place to place and everywhere found everything topsy-turvy. So he galloped towards Baggovut’s corps in the forest, when it was already quite daylight, and this corps should have been there long ago, with Orlov Denisov. Excited, upset by the failure and believing that someone was to blame for this, Tol galloped up to the corps commander and sternly began to reproach him, saying that he should be shot for this. Baggovut, an old, militant, calm general, also exhausted by all the stops, confusions, contradictions, to the surprise of everyone, completely contrary to his character, flew into a rage and said unpleasant things to Tolya. “I don’t want to take lessons from anyone, but I know how to die with my soldiers no worse than anyone else,” he said and went forward with one division. Having entered the field under French shots, the excited and brave Baggovut, not realizing whether his entry into the matter now was useful or useless, and with one division, went straight and led his troops under the shots. Danger, cannonballs, bullets were exactly what he needed in his angry mood. One of the first bullets killed him, the next bullets killed many soldiers. And his division stood for some time under fire without benefit. Meanwhile, another column was supposed to attack the French from the front, but Kutuzov was with this column. He knew well that nothing but confusion would come out of this battle that had begun against his will, and, as far as it was in his power, he held back the troops. He didn't move. Kutuzov rode silently on his gray horse, lazily responding to proposals to attack. “You’re all about attacking, but you don’t see that we don’t know how to do complex maneuvers,” he said to Miloradovich, who asked to go forward. “They didn’t know how to take Murat alive in the morning and arrive at the place on time: now there’s nothing to do!” - he answered the other. When Kutuzov was informed that in the rear of the French, where, according to the Cossacks’ reports, there had been no one before, there were now two battalions of Poles, he glanced back at Yermolov (he had not spoken to him since yesterday). “They ask for an offensive, they propose various projects, but as soon as you get down to business, nothing is ready, and the forewarned enemy takes his own measures.” Ermolov narrowed his eyes and smiled slightly when he heard these words. He realized that the storm had passed for him and that Kutuzov would limit himself to this hint.

Biography

Nothing is known about the years preceding his marriage to Vorobyov. Bagdasarova’s nationality, date and place of birth are a mystery. Judging by the photo, the spectacular brunette is younger than her husband.

Bagdasarova’s marriage to Andrei Vorobyov has not been officially formalized. Her income does not appear in the declarations, but the press services present her precisely as the first lady of the Moscow region.

The governor's first wife, Margarita, died of illness and left her husband two daughters. Now the couple is raising six children together: they have two sons together (George and Mikhail) and two more children each from previous marriages. In an interview, the politician jokes that this is their common contribution to correcting the demographic situation. There is no information about Bagdasarova’s first husband.

Andrey Vorobyov Russian. What kind of Russian is he? He married his daughter to a Jew. He lives with a Jewish woman. Hence all his successes.

Bagdasarov's first marriage

Arthur is not one of those men who can be called a ladies' man. He simply believed that one day he would meet that one kind and beautiful girl with whom he would start a family and have children. In his teenage years, he thought more about his career than about marriage. All his time he was in the circus, rehearsing acts with animals.

He created his first family at the age of 20, marrying the beautiful circus performer Larisa. They loved each other and their work. Arthur's life partner also trained animals.

Soon the young people became the parents of a beautiful baby, who was named Richard. The father was happy to tinker with the baby, although there was sorely not enough time for this. Their communication was often hampered by their busy work schedule.

At first everything was fine in the family, but gradually their relationship faded away. The spouses stopped understanding each other, constantly defending their own position and expressing complaints.

Not wanting to continue such a marriage, Arthur and Larisa separated in early 2006. In order for the son to grow up in peace and tranquility, the parents were able to maintain friendly relations. Since that time, many women have claimed the heart of the brave and interesting man, but he did not react to the courtship.

Tiger attack

In circus life, and even more so in the work of a trainer, there are many funny and tragic incidents. Despite experience, such situations can happen to any circus performer.

A dangerous incident happened to Arthur in June 2006 at the circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard. It was an ordinary performance. A number with predators was announced and the Bagdasarov brother and sister entered the arena; the father, armed with a pistol, was behind the cage.

The trainers worked with 10 tigers. When there were a couple of tricks left to show before the end of the act, the unexpected happened. Arthur, seeing that one of the tigers, named Caesar, was away from the rest of the animals, decided to push him towards the group with the help of a stick.

This step turned out to be a mistake, as the tiger grabbed the guy by the arm, then crushed him under him and grabbed his head with his teeth. Mikhail Ashotovich burst into the cage and started shooting in the air. He had to fire at least 5 shots before the animal released Arthur's head from its jaws.

The young trainer was urgently taken to the clinic at the Institute. Sklifosovsky. Doctors had to give the artist about 100 stitches. Despite the fact that the guy’s body was torn by the teeth and claws of the tiger, the tendons and nerves were not damaged. If the opposite had happened, he would have been guaranteed disability.

Many were interested in the fate of Caesar. What happened to the culprit of the emergency? According to circus rules, the animal was simply removed from the act; no one shot him. Experts found a mistake in the behavior of the trainer himself.

Over the course of several months, Arthur came to his senses and recovered. After his recovery, he returned to working with predators. This is a brave act by a real man.

Joint performance of Karina and Artur Bagdasarov

One of the performances of the famous trainers almost ended in tragedy. Karina and Arthur performed a number with the participation of ten tigers. The performers finished their performance; they had only two tricks left to perform.

Arthur approached the tiger named Caesar too quickly to push him towards the others with a stick. The tiger got scared and grabbed Arthur's hand with its paw, then crushed him and squeezed the trainer's head with his teeth.

Behind the scenes was the father, Mikhail Bagdasarov. He didn’t think for a second, he immediately jumped out and began firing his pistol into the air. Eventually the tiger let Arthur go.

He was immediately taken to Sklifosovsky Hospital, where more than 100 stitches were placed on his head. The body was completely covered with wounds from teeth and claws, but, fortunately, neither nerves nor tendons were damaged, and Arthur was not left disabled.

Karina Bagdasarova, who loves her brother and is madly worried about him, did not leave him for a second. She was with him all the time in the clinic and tried not to leave Arthur for a long time.
