Dress for a wedding in a church: photos of the best and selection rules

Every year, more and more couples in love cement their union not only in the registry office, but also in the church, which, in turn, requires compliance with certain traditions and rules. These, of course, include the appearance of the bride. From our material you will learn what a dress should be like for a wedding in an Orthodox Church, its features, color and accessories that go with it.

What outfit is unacceptable?

  • Too bright a color - orange, blue, green, red, fuchsia and others, as well as black, which in the walls of a church will look more like a mourning one;
  • pretentious;
  • with a lot of decor;
  • very luxurious and pretentious;
  • with an incredibly long train, because behind you there will be witnesses holding crowns throughout the ceremony, and they may accidentally step on your chic detail;
  • overly sexy - deep neckline, completely open arms, bare shoulders, back and knees are prohibited.

The hem length may be short, but in moderation. Midi options that end at knee level, or cocktail ones that end at the calf area are perfect.

Of course, jeans, trousers, tops, T-shirts, and even more so completely transparent, shiny and too tight dresses and miniskirts are under no circumstances allowed for the Sacrament of this rite.

Chapel of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker

  • Address: Krasny Prospekt, 17A, nearest metro station “Ploshchad Lenina” Show on map

The Orthodox chapel of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is inextricably linked with the history of Novosibirsk. It is a kind of symbol of the city. The chapel has original architecture, including smooth curves and facade arches. It looks spectacular in winter, against the backdrop of sparkling snow. This city landmark is definitely worthy of becoming a subject for realizing the idea of a wedding photo shoot. The chapel will be an excellent place for a wedding photo walk for newlyweds who consider themselves connoisseurs of the city’s historical and cultural monuments.

Suitable styles

The style of the product can be almost any, the main thing is that it sits harmoniously on the girl and complies with Orthodox standards.

Laconic straight dresses

The semi-adjacent hem is perfect for the Sacrament of Wedding for a newlywed with a proportional figure, of any age and height. The maxi option will hide imperfections, and the shortened “Case” model, ending below the knees or in the calf area, will perfectly lengthen you visually.

It's great to choose an outfit with a lace top, sleeves or collar.

Discreet "A-line"

His skirt gradually widens downwards, which means it can easily hide figure flaws, for example, too voluminous hips.

Among the decorated elements, delicate lace, interesting embroidery and pearls fit perfectly into the style in question.

Transformer

The detachable long skirt has become quite popular among girls lately. Designers have added new options to their collections with detachable tops, such as sleeves. This is an excellent idea for the ceremony if it is planned on the same day as the marriage registration. At the registry office and church, it is appropriate to wear a floor-length dress with sleeves, and at a banquet you can unfasten the removable parts.

Also, “Transformer” will fit perfectly into a warm summer wedding.

Greek style

A delicate and feminine style with a light flowing skirt and a defined waistline is considered universal, which will ideally fit a pregnant or overweight bride. For a cathedral, it is appropriate to choose models decorated with a shiny belt and with a closed top.

With sleeves

It is inappropriate to appear in a temple, especially at a wedding, with bare shoulders, so sleeves are perfect here. Modern fashion designers never tire of adding options to their collections with different sleeves. For the Sacrament choose:

  • long;
  • straight;
  • three quarters;
  • short;
  • free;
  • flashlight;
  • wings;
  • bell;
  • lush;
  • bat.

The sleeves may not necessarily be made of the same material as the dress. Options made of delicate lace and guipure, as well as translucent fabric, such as weightless chiffon, look great.

Lace

Interesting and romantic openwork motifs can perfectly decorate an entire outfit or its individual elements. Most often, lace is used to trim the back, shoulders, arms, bodice or skirt.

Airy and elegant dresses, as a rule, do not require additional decor, because they are already incredibly festive and spectacular in themselves.

Candid transparent models are not suitable for the ceremony, so make sure that no excess is visible through your lace.

Fully closed

This option is considered the most ideal for a wedding in the Russian Orthodox Church. It implies a closed chest and shoulders. Most often it has sleeves approximately to the wrist, as well as a stand-up collar or a round neck. By the way, newlyweds with a long, beautiful and graceful neck will look royal in products with a collar.

Suitable decor for these dresses will be various draperies, interesting embroidery, lace motifs and fashionable flounces.

Closed styles will wonderfully decorate both an older bride and a lady with full arms and large breasts.

If the ceremony is planned for the winter season, then there is one more advantage of this type: you will definitely not freeze in it and will look more than appropriate and comfortable.

Evening

Many people do not want to specifically buy an outfit just for going to church, so these models will come to the rescue, which you can wear after the ceremony. It is preferable to choose an evening dress for girls who are going to a wedding ceremony not immediately after the wedding, but after several years of official marriage.

An excellent choice of the evening item in question for the role of a wedding item, for older ladies, aged from 40 to 60 years.

It is appropriate to choose the color of the fabric in a delicate light shade:

  • cream;
  • Ivory;
  • beige;
  • champagne;
  • soft pink;
  • heavenly and so on.

Royal wedding

There is one more ancient custom that should be mentioned in order to bring some historical clarity - royal weddings. This ritual was performed during the coronation ceremony of monarchs, and Ivan the Terrible was the first to start it. The crown that was used went down in history under the well-known name - Monomakh's hat. The obligatory attributes of the action were barmas, an orb and a scepter. And the process itself had a sacred content, the main essence of which was the sacrament of anointing. But this ritual has nothing to do with marriage.

wedding

Choose by age and body type

For full

It is always more difficult for overweight young ladies to choose an outfit, and even more so for a wedding, because you not only need to skillfully hide flaws and show off your strengths, but also take into account certain rules.

A wonderful solution for plump women would be the Greek style, which can easily hide large hips and an imperfect waist. The “A-silhouette” can also hide a voluminous bottom. But overweight girls should not wear skirts that are too full, as they will make the look more bulky. Drapery and shiny fabrics will also make your figure heavier.

It is very good to find closed options, with a collar and sleeves.

Feminine “Fish” dresses are perfect for appetizing, but at the same time harmonious proportions and tall stature. In this case, “Mermaid” with long lace sleeves will look trendy.

For mature women

There is no strict rule for choosing a style for a wedding for an older woman. The main thing is that the model fits well, hides imperfections and meets the requirements of the temple.

You need to be careful with glossy material, because it emphasizes figure flaws, especially excess weight.

Straight, semi-fitting and A-line silhouettes would be an excellent option, but fluffy skirts and too-tight “Mermaid” designs are best left to young ladies. And as a decoration, openwork elements look good; besides, lace not only makes you look great, but is always in fashion.

For ladies over 50 years old, a good solution would be dresses with long sleeves, which will hide age-related changes on the hands in the form of pigment spots and imperfectly elastic skin.

A wonderful addition to the look of women over 40 will be light capes over a dress or bolero. This look will make any lady airy, feminine and elegant.

For pregnant

For the church, a couple expecting a child and deciding to get married is not a hindrance; on the contrary, the priests believe that children should only appear in such a marriage. But choosing an outfit for the bride and groom will not be easy, because it should not put pressure or restrict movement, since, first of all, during pregnancy it should be convenient and comfortable, and even more so when you already have a belly. Empire can easily cope with these tasks. The high waistline will cleverly hide your belly, and your gait will be free and easy.

If you are still in the early stages, then the classic “Princess” style, a straight silhouette, and perhaps even a “Mermaid” are suitable.

Advice. A white wedding dress has long been considered a symbol of virginity and purity, therefore, it is better for a pregnant woman to look at any other pastel shade: peach, light yellow, honey, milk, and so on.

Wedding

The priest takes the couple into the temple and places them in front of the lectern on a white towel. The man and woman are asked whether they came here of their own free will and whether there are any obstacles to getting married. Witnesses take the crowns in their hands and hold them over the heads of the bride and groom. It should be noted here that this is not so easy to do, especially if the witnesses are short and the young people are tall, and the ceremony time is no less than forty minutes in city churches, and if the ceremony is held in a monastery, then more than an hour. Therefore, it is advisable to choose higher witnesses. After the prayers are read, the newlyweds are brought out a cup of wine, which they must drink three times as a symbol of the fact that from that moment everything in the couple will be shared equally - both happiness and bitterness.

The bride should be warned: while drinking wine from a cup, a situation may arise when the veil gets very close to the candle and ignition occurs. To prevent this from happening, it is advisable to worry in advance about the length of the veil, which should not be too long.

The hands of the newlyweds are tied with a white towel and they are circled around the lectern three times. At this time the church choir is singing. The priest leads the couple to the Royal Doors of the altar and reads the edification for eternal life together. After the wedding, all the guests begin to congratulate the newlyweds, and the bell rings, signaling the birth of a young family.

If the newlyweds want to capture a wedding for a long time, photography and video shooting can be done with the permission of the priest. It is best to agree on exactly where the operator should be and how best to stand or move. Usually, churches and cathedrals have quite specific lighting, therefore, in order to ensure that the quality of the shooting does not disappoint later, it is advisable to contact a good specialist. There are cases when photography is strictly prohibited, then in order for a memorable event to remain in the family archives, you can take photographs against the backdrop of a cathedral or temple.

Color range

For Christians, exclusively light-colored dresses are appropriate for weddings. Young brides can afford absolutely any color:

  • white;
  • champagne;
  • beige;
  • lilac;
  • tea rose;
  • powdery;
  • lactic;
  • light blue;
  • pale pink;
  • pale yellow;
  • nude;
  • cream;
  • silver and so on.

But for mature ladies it is better to refuse snow-white, because against its background age-related flaws on the skin will immediately become visible. It would be great to choose a product in a light beige, mustard, golden, or sand shade.

Dark colors are prohibited - brown, black, as well as flashy and acidic colors - purple, fuchsia, green, yellow and others. Avoid colorful motifs.

One of the most visited places in Novosibirsk is the temple in honor of the Icon of the Mother of God of the Sign-Abalatskaya. This is a favorite place for organizing and holding numerous events for residents of the city of Novosibirsk. The temple is a popular attraction for tourists, it is included in excursion routes, and townspeople often like to take memorable photographs against its background. It is of interest as an object of architectural art, traditional culture and a center of religious life. Believers of the city of Novosibirsk gather here for worship. The extraordinary panorama of the church, built in the traditions of Russian Orthodox buildings of the 16th and 17th centuries, makes an indelible impression. And the special effect of antiquity is given by its four pillars, five domes and the presence of three naves. The picturesque gate at the entrance to the church grounds is in keeping with the spirit of the religious building. They are decorated with small gilded domes, different from the main ones. They emphasize the originality of the overall architectural concept. Silver domes, white plaster, fluffy iridescent snow will make every photo of the newlyweds unique. A wedding photographer will not miss this opportunity.

Fabrics

Wedding models look luxurious from many materials:

  1. Natural breathable silk is considered one of the most expensive and beautiful. It looks luxurious, has a shiny structure and a smooth surface.
  2. Shiny, smooth and iridescent satin is another popular fabric for sewing elegant items.
    Most often, “Princess” and “A-line” dresses are found from it, and it is also often combined with other materials - tulle, lace and organza. Satin options are dense and will perfectly warm you in the winter season, cold autumn or chilly spring. You need to be extremely careful with satin, because due to its bright shine it emphasizes the imperfections of the figure, and therefore is recommended only for slender girls.
  3. Light and airy: organza, tulle, tulle, chiffon and veil are also often used for sewing festive dresses. Basically, some individual elements are made from them: a skirt, frills, flounces, ruffles, puffy sleeves, petticoats and high collars. Most often, such delicate dresses are worn for a summer ceremony.
  4. Romantic lace is a universal material and one of the most fashionable for quite a long time and loved among those getting married of all ages and body types. Lace motifs can vary in shape and pattern. Their main advantage is that they can easily hide any figure flaw. If there is lining fabric, the outfit can be completely openwork; in this case, it does not even require additional decorations, because it already looks impressive and beautiful. This fabric often serves as a trim in a product, for example, on sleeves or a skirt.

Additions to the image

Head accessories

A girl's covered head is a prerequisite for being in the cathedral, so the bride needs to choose a stylish headdress.

Veil

The most common, of course, is the veil, because it is a classic in wedding fashion.

Advice. A great solution for those who have a wedding and registration on the same day.

A short accessory, as well as a bright color and with a lot of decorations, will not work. And be extremely careful with the multi-layer model, because there will be lit candles around you.

Cape

Instead of the usual veil, it is appropriate to wear a beautiful scarf made of lace, tulle or tulle. By the way, in a modern salon you can find interesting solutions in the form of a bolero or a raincoat that will cover not only your head, but also your shoulders, arms, back, and chest. Just what is needed for the Sacrament.

Long floor-length capes made of translucent material are a fashion trend. They look especially stylish with a straight-cut dress, in the Greek style and in the “Mermaid” silhouette.

Stole

If your wedding dress is chaste and everything is covered, then a light stole that will cover only your head and hair is quite suitable for you. The fabric used for sewing it is the same as for capes.

Makeup

Flashy accents on both the eyes and lips are unacceptable. Unobtrusive nude and transparent shine will fit perfectly into the image.

Remember, during the sacred Sacrament the priest will give you a crucifix and an icon to kiss, and you may accidentally leave traces of makeup on these sacred things, which is not very good. And some clergyman, seeing your bright lipstick, will not allow you to perform an important part of the ritual.

Jewelry

A lot of accessories in this case are unnecessary. Firstly, it will still be difficult to see them on the neck under a cape, shawl or closed dress style. And secondly, the main decoration on your hands on such a day should be a wedding ring.

If you want some kind of jewelry, then it is recommended to limit yourself to a thin pearl thread or a chain with a small pendant and small earrings, perhaps with stones.

According to the canons of the Orthodox Church, when entering a church, you must be wearing a cross.

Shoes

Your pair of shoes should be as comfortable as possible, because during the ceremony you will need to stand for a long time, so put the stilettos and high heels immediately to the side. Low wedge shoes or classic pumps are ideal. In cool weather, it is appropriate to wear ankle boots or ankle boots.

Choose a neutral, calm shade, because shoes, like an outfit, should not be pretentious, bright, dark or with flashy decor.

Organizational aspects of the ceremony

It is necessary to agree with the priest on the date and time for which the Orthodox wedding is scheduled. The rules of church life oblige this. Sometimes several couples can get married in a church at the same time; this nuance also needs to be discussed. You should be concerned if several cameramen will be taking photos and videos at the wedding, so that there is no confusion and this does not spoil the entire ceremony.

A week before the wedding, the newlyweds must begin to fast: do not eat meat, do not drink alcohol, do not smoke, and abstain from marital intimacy. Before the wedding, the newlyweds must attend a service, confess and receive communion.

It is also necessary to worry in advance about purchasing icons of the Savior and the Mother of God, which must be consecrated, wedding rings, which must be given to the priest before the ceremony, candles, two white towels and four handkerchiefs. It should be noted that according to church canons, rings should be bought for the groom from gold, for the bride from silver. As a rule, the acquisition of all necessary attributes is entrusted to witnesses.

The tradition of using icons in wedding ceremonies also has ancient historical roots. Since ancient times, parents blessed their children using holy icons: a son - Christ the Savior, a daughter - the Mother of God, thus giving guidance on the true path.

It is customary to leave a reward for performing a wedding ceremony; you should also ask the priest about money. If the couple does not have the financial ability to pay the entire amount, you can talk about it. Sometimes the amount is not announced at all, and the priest offers to give alms to the church, in the amount that is possible for the newlyweds.

Some recommendations

  1. Modest and elegant is exactly how you should look first of all at a wedding.
  2. In the temple you need to keep your head covered ; a long veil, stole or hood from a cape will come to the rescue.
  3. Make sure that your wedding item covers your shoulders, décolleté, knees and back from prying eyes .
  4. If your wedding at the registry office and the ceremony are planned on the same day and you want to wear an open outfit, then be sure a cape made of light material, a lace bolero or a scarf over
  5. Combine very short sleeves with gloves for a sophisticated and harmonious look.
  6. is too long , attracting attention, looks pretentious and expensive, which is unacceptable for church customs. In addition, such a hem is popular among Catholics, so leave the chic element for a wedding celebration or unfasten it before entering the temple.

Wedding rules

If, nevertheless, the relationship in a couple is time-tested, the feelings are deep, and the desire to perform the ceremony is well weighed, then it is worth familiarizing yourself with the conditions without which a wedding in the Orthodox Church is impossible. The rules are mandatory:

  1. The basis for a wedding is a marriage certificate.
  2. The main role in the family is given to the husband, who must love his wife selflessly. And the wife must obey her husband of her own free will.

It is the husband who has the responsibility to maintain the family's connection with the church. Debunking is allowed only in the most urgent situations, for example, when one of the spouses cheats or in case of mental illness. By the way, the latter can also become a reason for refusal of a wedding.

In ancient times, there was a custom when young people submitted a petition to a priest for a wedding, he announced this at a people's meeting, and only after a lapse of time, if there were no people who could report the impossibility of marriage, was the ceremony carried out.

The total number of weddings a person has throughout his life cannot exceed three times.

Only baptized young people and their witnesses are allowed to participate in the ceremony; everyone must wear a pectoral cross.

If one of those getting married does not know whether he has been baptized or not, it is imperative to discuss this issue with the priest. As a rule, a positive answer is possible if the young people agree to give birth and raise children, following Orthodox traditions.

Age restrictions: a man must be at least 18 years old, and a woman must be at least 16.

Wedding is a primordial Christian rite, therefore people professing another religion (Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, etc.), as well as atheists, are not allowed to participate in it.

A ban on weddings is imposed if the bride and groom are related, even in the fourth generation. And it is undesirable to enter into a marriage between godparents and godchildren.

If one of the newlyweds has a secondary marriage, the wedding is prohibited.

But circumstances such as the wife’s pregnancy, or if the newlyweds do not have parental blessing, are not grounds for refusing the wedding.

Folk signs about a wedding dress

The Orthodox Church does not approve of superstition and considers it a sin. How you feel about them is a purely personal decision.

  • The outfit must be completely new. And even the girl herself can try it on only once, when purchasing;
  • Some part for the dress needs to be borrowed. For example, a satin ribbon, a brooch, pearls or something else at your discretion. This means that if trouble comes, relatives and friends will help you and your husband overcome difficult moments;
  • never and under any circumstances let anyone try on your robe for the Sacrament, otherwise they will “try on” your happiness;
  • the longer the skirt and veil are, the longer the happy family life will last;
  • gold details on a wedding item - to a successful and rich married life;
  • the stronger the fabric, the closer and more intimate the relationship between the daughter-in-law and her mother-in-law will be;
  • do not choose separate options, for example, where the skirt and corset are sewn separately from each other. Otherwise, your union may split into two halves and discord will occur in the family;
  • the groom should not see his beloved in a wedding dress before the ceremony, much less choose it with the bride;
  • After the ceremony, you need to carefully store the outfit and not let anyone touch it. You cannot put it on yourself again, nor sell it, nor throw it away, because this is your talisman for a prosperous family life and protection from the evil eye.

The essence of a wedding

In the modern world, unfortunately, many people misinterpret the very essence of the sacrament and treat this church rite as a fashionable and beautiful event that can brighten up the solemn wedding day. Without even thinking about the fact that a wedding is not a simple formality. Only those people who believe in the eternity of marriage on earth and in heaven should take this step. And such a decision can be made only with mutual consent, as a conscious and well-thought-out act. We should not forget that the rite refers to one of the seven sacraments, as a result of which the grace of the Holy Spirit is transmitted to a person, and this happens in an invisible way.

The majestic cathedral building is a unique Novosibirsk landmark. Many city residents do not know that this magnificent temple was created by the hands of parishioners. It's hard to believe, but they didn't use modern technology during the construction process. In 1990, construction began on a brick building, which included a hipped bell tower and five domes. Over the course of nine years, thanks to city funding, financial assistance from enterprises and contributions from Old Believers, the main construction process was completed. But the improvement of the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the surrounding area continues. The cathedral is being completed, but the utility building of the church, which includes a large refectory, has not been completed. But even now the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands out for its majestic beauty, being the decoration of the city. An invited photographer to a wedding can easily find a great angle here for photographing the newlyweds.

In 2013, in the village of Kudryashovsky it was erected in honor of the apostles Peter and Paul. Today the temple is considered one of the attractions of the Novosibirsk region. It is made in a classic style and looks very majestic against the background of the surrounding area. And its white and blue palette, emphasized by golden domes, looks very contrasting against the backdrop of snow-white snow covers in winter. Therefore, newlyweds living nearby often choose the temple as one of the places for a wedding photo walk.
