Sergei Galitsky: biography

Billionaire from Krasnodar Sergei Galitsky bears his wife’s surname, and his capital earned not from natural resources, but from food.

Sergey Nikolaevich Harutyunyan (the businessman's surname at birth) was born on August 14, 1967 in the resort village of Lazarevskoye, Krasnodar Territory. Sergei is Armenian by nationality and grew up in a middle-income family. As a child, Sergei loved to kick a ball in the yard, but at the age of 14 he became interested in chess. Two years later he passed the standard and became a candidate master of sports in chess. Galitsky later admitted that chess taught him logical thinking and helped him in his career.

Entrepreneur Sergey Galitsky

At school, Sergei studied well, there were no C marks in his certificate, but, as they say, “he didn’t have enough stars from the sky.” As a child, the boy already showed a business streak - he collected hazelnuts and sold them to the market, bringing the money he received to the family. After graduating from school, he joined the army, served for two years, and in 1987, after being demobilized, he applied to the Faculty of Economics of Kuban University. During his studies, Sergei Nikolaevich had to work part-time as a loader.

In my third year, I wrote an analytical article for the specialized magazine “Finance and Credit.” The calculations made by the student amazed the editor of the publication and others. After the article was published, the student was found by the head of a commercial bank and invited for an interview. Sergei was made an offer that he could not refuse - the post of deputy manager. From that moment on, Galitsky combined study and work at a bank.

In 1993, Sergei Galitsky graduated from the university, worked for another year at the bank and left of his own free will. Sergei explained his departure by the futility of the bank's development. Years later, the businessman compared the banking organization to a “money changer.”

The girl's early years and youth

Oksana Samoilova’s childhood was no different from the childhood of many other children in the city of Ukhta, Komi Republic. She was born on April 27, 1988 in an ordinary middle-income family. The celebrity's father's name is Valery Olegovich, his mother's name is Evgenia Nikolaevna. Before their parents’ divorce, the Samoilov family lived in the village of Yarega.

Sometimes information slips into the press that Oksana is the granddaughter of the famous Soviet actress Tatyana Samoilova. Indeed, there are some similarities in facial features and appearance. However, they are not blood relatives.

The girl went to a regular school, communicated with peers, and helped her mother raise her brother Evgeniy. She was fascinated by the profession of an actress, so she attended dance and acting clubs at the Ukhta House of Culture. However, her childhood hobbies never became her profession. Together with Oksana, her cousin, the famous singer Yulia Samoilova, grew up in Ukhta. Despite close family ties, the girls almost do not maintain relationships.

Business

After leaving the bank, Galitsky decided to start his own business. In 1994, the businessman founded, which was engaged in the supply and sale of cosmetics from Avon, P&G, Johnson & Johnson. Galitsky came up with the idea to start distribution after a conversation with an acquaintance who made money from this business. Sergei Nikolaevich took out a loan for $30 thousand, purchased goods from Johnson & Johnson and sold it in small wholesale.

A year later, Transasia became the exclusive distributor of P&G products in the Southern region. But his entrepreneurial flair forced Galitsky to move on. The entrepreneur left the company to his partners and plunged into the food business. A period of takeoff began in the businessman’s professional biography.

In 1995, the businessman founded, and 3 years later opened the first Cash&Carry store in Krasnodar. Galitsky did not want to compete with large retailers, so he opened small stores in small towns. A few years later, the businessman united these stores into a single chain, Magnit. The name was born after a competition between the top managers of the enterprise. In its full form it means “LOW RATE STORES”.

General Director of OJSC "Magnit" Sergei Galitsky

In 2001, the network already consisted of 250 retail enterprises and was considered the largest in Russia. By 2003, Magnit overtook the Pyaterochka chain in terms of turnover, which had already reached $1.6 billion. Three years later, Magnit shares were listed on the RTS and MICEX exchanges. At that time, 58% of the chain store’s securities were concentrated in the hands of Sergei Galitsky, 15% belonged to co-owner Alexei Bogachev, 8% belonged to top managers, and 19% belonged to investors.

In 2007, the first Magnit hypermarkets opened. From the same year, Galitsky took the post of general director of the chain store. After 5 years, the Magnit retail chain already had 998 grocery and 469 cosmetic stores. In 2012, Sergey Galitsky expanded the business to include the Rouge perfume and cosmetics chain. And the very next year, Magnit became the absolute leader in Russia in the product segment.

As of 2021, the market value of the enterprise was $15.6 billion, which allowed Magnit to take 8th place in the list of the most profitable enterprises in the country after oil and gas. Also, Galitsky’s brainchild was among the 100 best innovative projects according to Forbes. Among Russian intellectuals it ranks third.

In addition to the grocery business, which includes a chain of stores and food factories, TD-Holding LLC, Optiline LLC, Sergei Nikolaevich opened the Art Side PR agency, Kvartal RK, a hotel, and restaurants. Since 2015, he has been a member of the supervisory board of VTB Bank.

At the beginning of 2015, the businessman sold a 1% stake in Magnit. The transaction amount was almost 10 billion rubles. The purpose of the sale is to obtain funds to finance personal projects. Today, Galitsky’s food and cosmetics empire includes almost 14.5 thousand stores, of which the businessman opened almost 2.4 thousand in 2015.

Sergei Nikolaevich is uncompromising if they try to impose the rules of the game on him. He had several conflicts with suppliers, the cause of which was the businessman’s intention to reduce the range. In 2005, the Mars brand offered the businessman conditions that did not suit the entrepreneur. Then Galitsky completely removed the company’s products from the range, instead of which he offered customers analogues of his own brands.

Owner of FC Krasnodar Sergey Galitsky

Sergey Galitsky is the owner of FC Krasnodar. In 2008, a businessman acquired a run-of-the-mill club. The businessman built a stadium, which was popularly called the “Krasnodar Coliseum” or “Galiseum,” and a children’s football academy in Krasnodar. Sergey does not consider the club a business project; rather, it is an activity for the soul. Every year, Galitsky invests $40 million in the development of the team, and another $3 million to finance the football academy, where future champions are trained.

In 2011, Krasnodar officially entered the Premier League of Russian Football Clubs. For football players, Sergei Galitsky established a personalized prize: the entrepreneur presents a commemorative Rolex watch to athletes who have played 100 matches for the Krasnodar club.

Football club Krasnodar

Even at the beginning of his career, Sergei Galitsky noted that he dreamed of founding a football club. This is exactly what the businessman plans to do for the rest of his days. In 2008, at the height of the crisis, when the entrepreneur’s fortune fell from 10 billion dollars to 5, he founded the Krasnodar football club .

Galitsky constantly spoke about the need to provide opportunities for talented athletes who do not have money for expensive training and activities. The entrepreneur achieved significant success in this matter - by 2011, his team became a member of the Russian Premier League, and numerous children's clubs were founded in many cities of Russia.

Personal life

Sergei met his future wife Victoria Galitskaya at the university. The girl studied to be an accountant. It is not known exactly when the young couple got married - the businessman does not like to talk about family and personal life.

After the wedding, Sergei took his wife’s surname. Journalists wrote that the father-in-law insisted on this, saying that his daughter and grandchildren would not bear an Armenian surname. According to another version, the Galitsky surname is a famous, princely one. Be that as it may, Sergei Nikolaevich officially became Galitsky.

On November 2, 1995, the Galitskys had a daughter, Polina. My wife doesn’t work now—there’s no need for that. The daughter followed in the footsteps of her parents and also entered the Kuban State University at the Faculty of Economics. In 2021, Polina was included in the list of the richest heirs of the Russian oligarchic elite, receiving fifth place in the “golden youth” ranking.

Sergei Galitsky is often compared to Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton, although the entrepreneur himself does not consider himself such. The businessman has incredible energy, crazy efficiency and an unconventional look. Sergei often criticizes the authorities and oligarchs who have spoiled the image of businessmen. Galitsky says that he works 7 days a week, so comparison with thieves is insulting to the entrepreneur.
