Stanislav Cherchesov - biography, personal life, coach, goalkeeper, photo

Childhood and youth

The future athlete was born in North Ossetia, into a large family. The footballer and coach is Ossetian by nationality, but he does not give accurate information to journalists about his religion. In an interview, Stanislav Cherchesov stated that he honors Sharia and respects Caucasian traditions, but at the same time he did not identify himself with any religion and did not call himself a devout believer.

The footballer's father, who worked as a bus driver, had four daughters in addition to his son Stanislav.

Stanislav Cherchesov in his youth
The biography of Stanislav Salamovich was intertwined with football early. The boy fell in love with the game of millions since childhood. At the children's sports school he was immediately put in goal, but Cherchesov also ran around the field as a striker almost until he graduated from the Youth Sports School. In adolescence, the young man grew tall (height – 183 cm and weight 72 kg), which became a help for the novice athlete.

At the age of 18, the young man joined the main team of the Spartak club from Ordzhonikidze, and after 3 years, having shown himself well in the “frame,” he moved to his Moscow teammates. In his youth, Stanislav Salamovich became the backup to the famous goalkeeper Rinat Dasaev, however, at that moment he himself occupied the number one position extremely rarely. Cherchesov became the main player only in 1989, after a one-year loan at Lokomotiv Moscow.

Biography and personal life of Stanislav Cherchesov

The future athlete was born in North Ossetia, in the small town of Alagir, in 1963, on September 2, into a large family. He is Ossetian by nationality on the part of both parents. Stanislav was the youngest of five children and the only boy, so he was always under the care of his four older sisters.

The head of the Cherchesov family worked as a bus and tram driver, and his mother raised numerous heirs and ran the household. It is worth noting that the Cherchesov family respected the laws of Sharia and the traditions of their homeland, however, with age, Stanislav, respecting all religions, does not consider himself to be one of them, which he has repeatedly said in his interviews.

The family lived quite modestly, but the parents sought to give their children a good education, as well as develop their talents and abilities. The boy grew up as an active and restless child, which is why he often had problems with his studies at school. In order to channel Stanislav’s energy into a peaceful direction, his parents sent their son to the football section. There, for a long time he could not decide which position he would like to play more, but, ultimately, he decided to be a goalkeeper. After graduating from school, Cherchesov decided to enter the Institute of Physical Education. He had all the data to start a sports career: a physically developed young man, with a height of 183 centimeters.

Remembering his small homeland, Cherchesov said that in the entire town of Alagir there was the only resistance plant, which employed almost the entire working population. After the plant closed, life in the city became especially difficult, and when Stanislav Salamovich arrives in those parts, he is surprised how he, a native of these places, managed to grow to the level of the national football team.

The coach of the Russian national team tries to keep his personal life away from prying eyes. It is known that Stanislav Salamovich is monogamous, and for almost 28 years he has been happily married to his wife Alla.

The woman works as a foreign language teacher, she is a non-public person, she rarely appears in front of cameras and almost never gives interviews. The Cherchesov family has two heirs: 26-year-old daughter Madina, and 24-year-old son Stanislav Jr., who, like his father, decided to connect his life with football.

Soon after Madina's birth, Cherchesov moved to the German club Dynamo, and the footballer moved his entire family to Germany. There, a couple of years later, the couple’s second child was born. When his son was two years old, the family moved again, this time to Austria, where Cherchesov played for FC Tyrol for six years. The footballer's children were educated in Europe and are fluent in several languages.

Madina has a diploma from an Austrian university, and Stanislav Jr., as we have already noted, chose a football career for himself and is now the goalkeeper of Chernomorets. We would like to add that all members of the Cherchesov family lead a healthy lifestyle and have an extremely negative attitude towards smoking and drinking alcohol. The head of the family admits that he best relieves stress by solving crossword puzzles.

At the dawn of the 90s, a documentary film-essay was made about Stanislav Cherchesov, called “I chose the road to the mountain myself.”

Later, the footballer played for the German club Dynamo from Dresden and the Austrian team Tyrol, where he completed his professional career. If at the beginning of his career Stanislav Cherchesov still made offensive mistakes, then in the 90s the athlete became characterized by such qualities as instant decision-making, quick reaction and analysis of his own mistakes.

In addition, the goalkeeper was distinguished by incredible will and self-confidence. While playing for Tyrol, Cherchesov had to enter the field with an injury. The match aggravated the damage, and the player ended up undergoing surgery to replace the cartilage. The doctors who worked on the injury unanimously said that after such medical intervention it was impossible to return to professional sports. Stanislav Salamovich was also written off in the Austrian team.

But the athlete began to train hard, gritting his teeth and not paying attention to the pain. As a result, Cherchesov regained his place in goal, and, in addition, together with the club, he raised the national champion cup over his head. For his demonstrated will, the Russian goalkeeper was awarded a special “Return of the Season” prize.

Stanislav Cherchesov also played for his country’s national team for a long time. Moreover, the football player is still considered the record holder as the oldest player ever to take to the field in the jersey of the main Russian team. Last match played at the age of 36 years and 174 days. The goalkeeper was included in the squad for the 2002 World Cup, when the football player was already 38 years old, but did not take the field in a single match of the tournament.

Wife - in Austria, son - in Novorossiysk

Our columnist Sergei Dadygin visited Cherchesov in Austria in 2005. Stanislav met him at the Innsbruck railway station in his black BMW and brought him outside the city, to the village of Absam. Cherchesov, then the head coach of Tyrol, lived with his family in a two-story house at the foot of the picturesque mountains. Nearby there is a small garden. Cherchesov then complained that he could not buy this house - the local authorities did not allow it. Only many years later the problem was solved. The coach's wife Alla and daughter Madina still live in Austria. And the 23-year-old son Stanislav, like his father, became a goalkeeper. Defends the gates of Novorossiysk Chernomorets.

Coaching activities

After finishing his career as a football player and completing the necessary courses to obtain a coaching license, Stanislav Cherchesov headed the Austrian club Kufstein, then the team from the same country Wacker-Tirol.

In 2006, the coach returned to Russia to take the helm of Spartak Moscow. The work there turned out to be controversial. Cherchesov, according to statistics, became the most successful coach after the departure of Spartak legend Oleg Romantsev from this position and won silver medals in the championship. But at the same time, under his leadership, the Moscow team suffered 2 devastating defeats from CSKA and Dynamo Kyiv. In addition, Stanislav Salamovich sent two favorites of Spartak fans to the reserve - Russian Egor Titov and Ukrainian Maxim Kalinichenko. This also did not add popularity to the Ossetian coach.

Later, Cherchesov coached Zhemchuzhina Sochi, Terek Grozny, Amkar Perm and Dynamo Moscow. With many of these clubs, the coach achieved significant victories and took first place in tournaments.

In the fall of 2015, Stanislav Cherchesov was appointed head coach of the Polish team Legia. In one season, the Russian coach managed to return the Warsaw club to the lead and achieve a “golden double”: winning first place in the championship and winning the Polish Cup.

But on June 1, 2021, the management of Legia and coach Stanislav Cherchesov made a mutual decision to terminate cooperation. The reason was a difference in vision for the further development of the flagship of Polish football.

Stanislav Cherchesov (2007-2008)

Right now Stanislav Salamovich is successfully coping with the Russian national team. But his arrival at Spartak cannot be called successful. In 2007, the championship was lost to Zenit. A year later, he fought for the title with Rubin, but after crushing defeats against CSKA in the Premier League and against Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League, he was fired. As a football player, Cherchesov defended the goal of Spartak for a long time. But he became a legend in the Austrian Tirol. In Austria he is still remembered.

In August 2021, it became known that the ambitious specialist, for his previous merits, was approved for the post of head coach of the Russian national team, which failed to overcome the group stage of the European Championship in France. Stanislav Cherchesov agreed to prepare the football squad for the home World Cup and signed a contract that expired just at the end of the championship.

On August 31, 2021, the Russian national team played its first match under the command of Cherchesov. The team played a draw (0:0) with the Turkish national team. After this match, the national team’s confrontation with teams from other countries had varying results. Russian football players played friendly matches. The national team chose teams with average abilities and a similar rating in the FIFA lists as opponents. But even in this case, Russian players did not show stable play.

In September, domestic football players played against the Ghana national team and won with a score of 0:1. The team lost the next two games: in early October the Russians lost to the Costa Rica team (3:4), and on November 10 to the Qatar team (1:2). But after 5 days, Russian football players defeated their Romanian colleagues with a score of 0:1.

Due to such variable results in games with national teams of other countries, as well as due to the fact that the home championship does not involve the participation of the Russian national team in qualifying competitions, the team took 53rd place in the FIFA rankings, which was a record low place for the Russian team. But already in November 2021, the Russian team broke this anti-record: it dropped to 55th place on the list, and in December it once again broke its own record and fell one more point lower.

In 2021, the Russian national team continued to play friendly matches against middling teams and also demonstrate unstable play and results. In the same year, the team became a participant in the Confederations Cup.

Russia got off to a pretty promising start in this competition. The Russian football players won the first match against the New Zealand team with a score of 2:0. But the team lost the next two games – with Portugal and Mexico – which ended Russia’s participation in the tournament.

In June, the final part of the 2018 World Cup started in the Russian Federation. Cherchesov’s team won the opening match against Saudi Arabia with a score of 5:0, followed by a victory over Egypt (3:1). The match with Uruguay, which decided the dispute for leadership in the group, became a real test of strength. On June 25, Uruguay beat the championship hosts with a crushing score of 0:3. Despite the loss, the Russians secured access to the 1/8 finals, which has not happened for many years.

Russia's opponents in the 1/8 were titled - the Spanish national team. The first ball ricocheted into the Russian goal from the foot of Sergei Ignashevich, but already at the end of the first half, a handball by Gerard Pique led to a penalty, which was coolly taken by Artem Dzyuba, captain of Zenit St. Petersburg. The Spaniards applied pressure throughout the match, but the defense of the Russian team stood to death. The Russia-Spain meeting ended in a series of post-match penalties, in which Igor Akinfeev’s skill turned out to be an order of magnitude higher than David De Gea’s.

For the first time in its history, Russia reached the quarter finals of the World Cup. Russian fans were looking forward to the game with the Croats. The match differed from the previous one in its dynamics, many dangerous moments and beautiful goals. Denis Cheryshev put the Russians ahead with a shot into the top corner, the Croats responded with two goals and only Mario Fernandez's header sent the Russians into the penalty shootout, where the Croatian team led by Zlatko Dalic was stronger.

And the most relaxing thing for Stanislav Salamovich is solving crossword puzzles of any kind. He often resorts to their help during air travel.

Cherchesov maintains a personal Instagram page because he tries to keep up with the times. There he shares with subscribers both details of his professional biography and news from the world of football.

Stanislav Cherchesov

Origin and education

Stanislav Salamovich Cherchesov was born in North Ossetia in the city of Alagir on September 2, 1963. In addition to Stanislav, whom his relatives call Slavik, there are four daughters in the Cherchesov family.

For a long time, Stanislav could not choose a role for himself - he played both as a striker and as a goalkeeper. Finally he decided to become a goalkeeper.

And Rimma Dudarovna recalled: “According to Caucasian customs, the son remains to live with his parents in order to take care of them in old age. If there are several sons in a family, then this responsibility falls to the youngest.

“I see how embarrassed Slavik is in front of us because he can’t be around all the time,” said Rimma Dudarovna. - But we are not offended by him. We respect his choice and work. Although, of course, a mother’s heart would like her son to be with us.”

In 1980, Cherchesov entered the Institute of Physical Culture in Ordzhonikidze. And in 1981, Stanislav began his sports career at the Spartak football club (Ordzhonikidze).

In 1984, Cherchesov was invited to Spartak Moscow as an understudy for Rinat Dasaev . Although Cherchesov performed unsuccessfully in the first training games and missed a lot, nevertheless, Spartak head coach Konstantin Beskov recognized the talent in him and kept him on the team. Cherchesov rarely appeared in the Spartak goal in official matches, and when he did take the field, he did not always act successfully. Cherchesov himself called the loss to Zalgiris in the USSR Championship in 1987 with a score of 2:5 one of the most memorable matches, where he was responsible for almost all the goals against the Muscovites.

Cherchesov played for Lokomotiv Moscow for one season (1988), and then returned to Spartak again, this time as the main goalkeeper (1989).

Also in 1989, Stanislav Cherchesov made his debut in matches for the national team. Cherchesov played 49 official matches for the national teams of the USSR and Russia.

In 1992, Cherchesov was the first domestic goalkeeper to be recognized as the best goalkeeper in Russia. Cherchesov returned briefly to Russia and Spartak in 1995, defending the goal of the “red-whites” in the famous season in the Champions League, when the club won all 6 games of the group stage.

In 2006, Cherchesov returned to Moscow and took the post of sports director of Spartak Moscow. After the resignation of Vladimir Fedotov, Stanislav Cherchesov was appointed head coach of the team (2007). And immediately in the 2007 season, under the leadership of Cherchesov, Spartak took second place in the Russian Football Championship. However, on August 14, 2008, after a defeat to Dynamo Kyiv with a score of 1:4 in the match of the 3rd qualifying round of the Champions League, Stanislav Cherchesov was fired.

On December 16, 2010, Stanislav Cherchesov signed a contract with FC Zhemchuzhina-Sochi, which played in the FNL championship. But financial difficulties did not allow the club to continue playing in the tournament. And in the summer of 2011, the Sochi team withdrew from the tournament.

Soon, Grozny “Terek” appears on Cherchesov’s track record (September 2011). Under the leadership of Stanislav Cherchesov, Terek took 11th place in the Russian Championship (2011/12 season), and 8th place in the 2012/13 season. The management of the Grozny team did not renew the contract with Cherchesov.

Stanislav Salamovich spent the 2013/2014 season as the head coach of Amkar Perm. But Cherchesov did not finish his season at Amkar and moved to Dynamo Moscow.

On April 14, 2014, in the first match under the leadership of Cherchesov, Dynamo won a landslide victory over Volga Nizhny Novgorod (5:0). Subsequently, the Moscow club entered the Europa League, where it reached the 1/8 finals, with six out of six victories won in the group stage.

In April 2015, Cherchesov had a conflict with the team’s midfielder Igor Denisov , as a result of which the latter was transferred to the reserve team. At the end of the season, the team, like the year before, took 4th place. On July 13, 2015, before the start of the championship, Cherchesov left the post of Dynamo coach, giving way to Andrei Kobelev .

At the beginning of October 2015, Stanislav Cherchesov was appointed head coach of the Polish Legia. With Legia, Cherchesov won the first trophies in his coaching career, making a golden double in his first season (winning the championship and the Polish Cup). After the end of the season, Cherchesov asked the club management to strengthen the squad for the Champions League, but was refused. On June 1, 2021, Legia management announced their separation from the coach by mutual consent due to disagreements on key issues regarding the development of the club.

Russian national team and Stanislav Cherchesov

In 2021, Stanislav Cherchesov led the Russian national team. His contract with the national team is valid until the end of the 2021 World Cup. In the first match under the leadership of Cherchesov, the national team played a draw (0:0) with the Turkish team on August 31. On September 6, 2021, the Russian team won against the Ghana team with a score of 1:0.

On October 9, the Russian team lost to Costa Rica with a score of 3:4, and on November 10 - to the Qatar team (1:2). On November 15, in the match with Romania, only in the last added minute was the winning goal scored, which became the only one in this match. Because of these results, and given that the national team does not take part in the qualifying games for the home World Cup in October 2021, the national team has dropped to a record low of 53rd place in the FIFA rankings. And then it updated its anti-record, dropping to 55th place in November, and to 56th in December.

In 2021, the Russian national team also did not demonstrate stable play, playing mainly friendly matches against mid-ranking teams in the FIFA ranking. At the Confederations Cup, the team started with a victory over the New Zealand team (2:0), but then suffered defeats from the teams of Portugal and Mexico and ended their performance in the tournament.

In 2021, news appeared in the media about conflicts between Stanislav Cherchesov and a number of players of the Russian national team, in particular, the team’s main goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev . “Soviet Sport” reported that CSKA Moscow goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev may stop playing for the Russian national team due to a conflict with Cherchesov. In addition, according to the newspaper, Cherchesov had tense relations with several other leaders of the national team - midfielder Alan Dzagoev and forward Fedor Smolov .

The Russian national football team called media information about the conflict between head coach Stanislav Cherchesov and a number of players untrue.

After the Russian national team was eliminated from the Confederations Cup in 2017, Alexander Kokorin and Artem Dzyuba posted a video on Instagram where they showed their mustaches with a gesture. According to many fans, this message was addressed to Stanislav Cherchesov. However, later the players refuted these guesses, but did not explain the meaning of their action. Cherchesov promised to give Dzyuba and Kokorin a chance in the Russian national team and wondered why not do this.

In March 2021, Stanislav Cherchesov, after a devastating defeat from Brazil, announced that he was not going to call the captain of Lokomotiv Moscow Igor Denisov . “Are there any chances to see Denisov in the national team? As of today, no. Next, too,” Cherchesov said on the air of the “Everything for Football” program.

In the fall of 2021, Cherchesov announced the Russian national team’s readiness to compete with top teams. In March 2021, the head coach of the Russian national football team, Stanislav Cherchesov, promised that his team at the 2018 World Cup would show results no worse than the Russian Olympians at the Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

At the 2018 World Cup, the Russian team reached the quarter finals, where they lost to Croatia only in a penalty shootout. On July 28, in the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin presented state awards and certificates of honor to 23 players and six coaches of the Russian national football team.

Euro 2020 and dismissal

At Euro 2020, the Russian team took last place in its group, suffering major defeats from Belgium and Denmark and beating Finland with a minimal score. Despite this, Cherchesov refused to resign from his post.

Later, at a meeting of the technical committee of the Russian Football Union, the work of the head coach was recognized as unsatisfactory, but they expressed confidence in him.

“The technical committee of the RFU recognized, like Cherchesov himself, the work of the head coach as unsatisfactory, since the team took fourth place in the group. At the same time, the technical committee expressed confidence in Stanislav Salamovich and wished him good luck as the head coach of the national team,” said one of the representatives of the RFU, Mikhail Gershkovich.

Then Cherchesov held a press conference at which he said that he was not going to resign yet and was now thinking about how to beat the Croatian national team in September. He also commented on the words of President Vladimir Putin that the Russians showed a low result at the Euro and, in this regard, we need to “think about what needs to be changed now from the point of view of personnel.”

On July 8, 2021, the news reported Cherchesov’s resignation. “The RFU will begin searching for candidates for the position of head coach, who will prepare the team for the qualifying matches of the 2022 World Cup,” said the organization’s president, Alexander Dyukov.

Personal life of Stanislav Cherchesov

Cherchesov is married and has two children - daughter Madina and son Stanislav (born 1994). The son is the goalkeeper of Novorossiysk Chernomorets. His wife, Alla Gagkaeva, is also from Alagir.

Stanislav Cherchesov does not smoke or abuse alcohol. He is a very calm person and never shouts either in training or during matches. Moreover, all his friends know that his anger manifests itself in just the opposite way: if a man lowers his voice to a whisper, it means he is on edge. And the most relaxing thing for Stanislav Salamovich is solving crossword puzzles of any kind. He especially often resorts to their help during air travel, says Cherchesov’s biography on the 24-SMI website.

Stanislav Cherchesov now

At the beginning of 2021, the head coach of the national team, together with the head doctor of the team, was vaccinated against coronavirus infection. Cherchesov noted in an interview that after being injected with the Sputnik-V vaccine he felt great. He denied rumors that he allegedly forced first-line football players to get vaccinated.

Stanislav Cherchesov - preparation for Euro 2020
The team's first game at Euro 2020 was unsuccessful: the Russians lost to Belgium with a devastating score of 0:3. Of course, a wave of criticism fell on the players, as well as on Cherchesov. However, the head coach was in no hurry to justify himself to the fans, agreeing with all the arguments. At the same time, he noted the reason for the failures - two team players were injured before the tournament, some withdrew during the match.

Stanislav Salamovich called on people to cheer and believe in victory. The next game with Finland was very important: it depended on its outcome whether the team would continue to fight further. The Russians managed to beat the Finns with a score of 1:0. But the match with Denmark that followed upset the Russian fans - 4:1. Russia dropped out of the group.

After the high-profile failure at Euro 2020, the media increasingly wrote about Cherchesov’s dismissal. On July 8 it became known: the RFU terminated the contract with the coach, noting that it was a joint decision.

Childhood and youth of Stanislav Cherchesov

The future goalkeeper was born into a large and friendly family. His father worked as a bus driver, and his mother was a housewife and raised five children. Stanislav was the youngest in the family, and was always under the protection of his four older sisters.

Childhood photo of Stanislav Cherchesov: the future goalkeeper and his family

Studying at school was difficult for him, and the restless boy was sent to the city football section. An amazing fact, but for a long time Cherchesov could not decide who he wanted to be more: a goalkeeper or a striker. He made his final and irrevocable choice only at the age of 14, taking his place at the goal.

In 1980, Cherchesov entered the Ordzhonikidze Institute of Physical Culture, and a year later he took a place in the goal of the local branch of Spartak. The young goalkeeper played for this team from 1981 to 1984, after which he received an invitation to Spartak Moscow.

As you know, they don’t call Spartak twice, and therefore Cherchesov without hesitation went to Moscow for a tryout.
