Eduard Anatolyevich Streltsov is a legendary Soviet football player who played as a striker. He spent his entire career at Torpedo Moscow and played for the USSR national team. Became champion of the 1956 Olympic Games. A man of difficult fate, who ended up in prison on dubious charges, but then managed to return to professional sports. Due to his imprisonment, Streltsov was unable to fully develop himself, but he was still twice recognized as the best football player in the USSR and became the national champion.
Career
In his childhood and youth, Igor Eduardovich tried to follow in the footsteps of his famous father. He trained at the capital's sports school "Torpedo" and in 1983-1984 played for this football club as a striker. Then he played for a year as part of the Podillya team from the Ukrainian city of Khmelnitsky, reaching Dynamo-2 Moscow in 1987. But I had to give up my sports career due to continuous injuries and because “they often beat me on my legs.”
Subsequently, with the assistance of Mikhail Gershkovich, he found himself in law enforcement agencies, where he rose to the rank of major. In such a noble profession, he managed to achieve certain successes.
For example, in April 2002, Streltsov and a partner named Fomichev, hot on their heels, found and detained an attacker who had stolen a woman’s bag in the Nagatinsky Zaton area. For competent actions, police patrol officers were awarded a monetary reward in the amount of a monthly salary.
Childhood and youth
Eduard was born in 1937 in Perovo, near Moscow, into the family of Anatoly and Sofia Streltsov. The football player’s mother worked as a kindergarten teacher, and his father worked as a carpenter at one of the local factories.
In fact, Edik spent his entire childhood without a father. He was only four years old when the Great Patriotic War began. Anatoly Streltsov went to the front, went through the war, and then started a new family. In 1943, he returned on vacation, and this meeting between son and father was one of the last. The next time they saw each other was when Edward was 17 years old. Then they met at the funeral of the football player’s grandfather.
Of course, it was difficult for my mother to raise her son alone. Streltsov’s childhood was not easy; sometimes it was a question of survival. Due to lack of money, sometimes there was no food at all in the house. In addition, Sophia had serious health problems. She suffered a heart attack, and then also developed asthma.
As a child, Streltsov fell in love with football. He could not be called a good student. But he loved physical education, and after school he enjoyed kicking a ball in the yard. At the same time, Edik’s favorite team was Moscow Spartak.
Due to a difficult financial situation, at the age of 13 the boy went to work at a factory as a mechanic. He left school after finishing seven years.
Streltsov grew up without a father and went hungry. After seventh grade, I got a job as a mechanic at a factory.

was born into a very ordinary family. Father Anatoly worked as a carpenter, and mother Sofya Frolovna worked in a kindergarten.
With the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, the father of the family was drafted into the army. In 1943, Streltsov Sr. came home on vacation. Sofya Frolovna had to raise her son alone. She suffered a heart attack, suffered from asthma, and later received disability. The family lived poorly. Streltsov’s mother admitted: “Edik asked: “Mom, is there anything to eat?” So what should I answer? He stopped and stared at me with hungry eyes. And I, through tears: “No, son... And the cake is over.” So I went to bed hungry. But I can’t find a place for myself. I went out into the yard, sat down on a bench and cried. A neighbor from another entrance saw me, sympathized with me and brought me a piece of bread and five rubles. I returned home, woke up my son and gave him bread. And he: “Mom, eat yourself. You’re sick, you need it more.” When I refused, he suggested: “Let’s cut it in half then...”.
At school, of all the lessons, the future star was only interested in physical education, where he could kick a ball. It is not surprising that the young man did not stay at school. After the seventh grade, he got a job as a fitter-patterner at the company where his mother worked.
As fate would have it, at the age of 10 Streltsov ended up in a children's team. A couple of years later I reached the youth and then the men’s team of the plant. Start of a career in football
It was work at the factory that helped young Streltsov pave the way to professional sports. Eduard began playing for the factory team, where he was noticed. In the workshop they treated the guy with sympathy. He was kind, sympathetic and shy. But the guy’s talent for football was noticeable already in childhood.

As Streltsov’s biographers recalled, in a conversation with another coach, Maslov called Eduard “the best player in Europe.”
Career flourishing and significant sporting events
Already at the age of 16, Streltsov made his debut for Torpedo in the national championship. In the match against Dynamo Tbilisi, he opened the scoring with his own goals. And later the young man quickly secured his place in the main team. In 1954, fans became acquainted with Streltsov’s game.
In 1955, Torpedo took fourth place in the USSR championship, and Streltsov was already one of the team leaders. Along with these results came real recognition. The forward received an invitation to the USSR national team, for which he made his debut at the age of 17. And in the first two matches he scored a hat-trick!
At the Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia, he and the USSR team won the tournament. True, he never received a gold medal, as he did not take part in the final match.
Streltsov, considered one of the best players of that tournament, did not take the field in the final, although he scored the winning goal against the United German team in the 1/8 finals and equalized the score in the 112th minute of the semi-final against the Bulgarians. He was replaced by Nikita Simonyan. There are many versions of what happened. According to one of them, the coaching staff of the USSR national team made a forced replacement due to Valentin Ivanov’s injury. It was impossible to use the Torpedo combination, and Ivanov played well together with Streltsov. As a result, the head coach of the national team, Gavriil Kachalin, decided to field the Spartak five for the match: Isaev, Tatushin, Simonyan, Ilyin and Salnikov. In particular, Simonyan himself spoke about this.
According to another version, voiced by the player of that team Alexei Paramonov, Anastas Mikoyan, a member of the Presidium of the CPSU Central Committee, insisted on including Simonyan in the team. Naturally, it is no longer possible to find out for certain the reason why Streltsov missed the final. By the way, Simonyan wanted to give the gold medal to Eduard, but he refused to take the award. Then the young torpedo fighter said that he would win many more medals.
Gradually, Torpedo became one of the leaders of the USSR championship. The team took second place in the 1957 season. Naturally, the main scorer played an important role in the team's success. Streltsov also showed himself superbly in the USSR national team. The team made it to the 1958 World Cup, defeating Poland in an extra match with a score of 2:0. It was Streltsov who scored the first goal of the Soviet team.
The USSR national team won a ticket to the World Championship, which was held in Sweden, but Streltsov was not there. The footballer spent the next few years in prison because of a strange and far from clear case, which still has many mysteries.
By that time, Streltsov had already become the idol of millions. He became the youngest football player in the USSR to receive the title of Honored Master of Sports. At the same time, Edward remained the same calm person, but did not pass his test of fame. He had ill-wishers who were jealous of the football player’s success.
What does Furtseva have to do with it?
Without going into the details of the camp history of Eduard Streltsov, let’s ask ourselves a question: who needed this high-profile story with the prison punishment of the Moscow Torpedo and USSR national team striker? 12 years received for rape, when the situation itself looked very vague - the girls, supposedly the victims, kept changing their testimony - this, of course, is a very, very long time. People who believe that post-war times were bloodthirsty may be reminded that the USSR abolished the death penalty for three years (1947-1950). Uprisings broke out every now and then in the Gulag camps (Norilsk and Vorkuta in 1953, Kengir in 1954), but this did not cause new waves of repression. Moreover, in 1955, Khrushchev quietly amnestied the Bandera and Vlasovites, and much later it was necessary to punish many of those whose hands were up to their elbows in blood. And here it is 12 years, and at a time when the country needed Streltsov more than the country needed Streltsov.
Here it must be recalled that the young football player quickly became one of the leaders of the football team. At the age of 19, he was already on the champion team at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, although he did not play in the final. The football exploits of those years themselves began with a match with Sweden, in which our team defeated the opponent with a score of 6:0. Streltsov scored a hat-trick, and against his background the leaders of the Swedish team were lost, six of whom three years later became vice-world champions in 1958. For the sake of objectivity, the Swedes added Johan Gren and Nils Liedholm to their roster, and the Soviet team lost three: Tatushin, Ogonkov and Streltsov. Why?
In one of the Soviet-era investigations, a version emerged that the initiator of Streltsov’s punishment was Ekaterina Furtseva, at that time a member of the Presidium of the CPSU Central Committee. Her post speaks about the possibility of making such a decision, and supposedly there was even a reason - Streltsov was rude to her daughter, since Furtseva had designs on Eduard as a son-in-law. But the version looks implausible if you know that Svetlana Furtseva was born in 1942, and at the time of meeting Streltsov she was 14. The question generally arises: how could a 14-year-old girl end up in the Kremlin at a gala evening dedicated to the victory of the Soviet Olympians in Melbourne . According to this version, Streltsov, while intoxicated, rudely expressed himself to Svetlana: “I won’t trade my Alka for anyone” (meaning my wife Alla), which Furtseva took as a personal insult and complained to Khrushchev. It was she who later passed the note about the rape that happened at the dacha to Nikita Sergeevich’s assistant...

Arrest and career break
Plunging into a new life with expensive restaurants and women, Streltsov found himself in a terrible situation. By that time, the press had already begun to express dissatisfaction with the footballer’s lifestyle. The forward began to live more wildly, began to appear in the company of women, despite having his own family, and visited restaurants and other establishments. All this caused concern in the echelons of power. In the Soviet Union, such behavior was considered immoral. Many believed that Streltsov had “star fever.”
Of course, criticism of Edward in the media appeared at the instigation of senior officials who considered him ideologically incorrect. Well-known commentator Vadim Sinyavsky later recalled that Dynamo and CDKA wanted to see Streltsov, but he refused the transfer. According to Sinyavsky, this is why a case was opened against the football player.
Three days before leaving for the World Championships in Sweden, Streltsov and his national team partners Boris Tatushin and Mikhail Ogonkov were relaxing at Eduard Karakhanov’s dacha in the Moscow region. He was Tatushin's childhood friend. Several local girls were also present. The football player went into privacy with one of them in a room, and the next day the prosecutor’s office received a complaint of rape. The girl demanded that the torpedo bomber be brought to justice. The girl who spent the night with Ogonkov did the same.
The police detained all three players, but later released Tatushin. The physical education committee immediately disowned Streltsov, deciding to disqualify him for life.
The dacha where those events took place
Within a few days, both victims asked to drop the criminal case against the football players. Ogonkov was eventually released, but Streltsov remained in prison. Moreover, soon the girl was demanded to withdraw a second statement in which she asked to stop the case.

During the confrontation, many inconsistencies appeared. Suspicions arose that it was not Streltsov, but Karakhanov who raped the girl. At the same time, the USSR national team doctor Oleg Belakovsky recalled that the football player looked shabby the next day. Moreover, Streltsov had scratches on his face. It is still not known for certain whether Edward raped the girl or whether they were together voluntarily, but this incident broke the football player’s career. The case was quickly closed with a guilty verdict, and the football player was sent to prison for 12 years. Moreover, the entire process took less than two months. The investigators were not at all bothered by the inconsistencies in this case.
There are different versions. But it is known that the head of state Nikita Khrushchev demanded that Streltsov be punished as severely as possible. Moreover, after his early release from the colony, he was not allowed to play football. The situation changed only after Khrushchev left the post of General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee.
According to one version, unrequited love led to a sad outcome. Svetlana, the daughter of the influential Minister of Culture Ekaterina Furtseva, fell in love with Edward. He did not reciprocate her feelings, saying that he had a fiancée. After this, according to rumors, Furtseva decided to take revenge on the football player, and personally “whispered” to Khrushchev about this matter. Already in 1965, he won the USSR championship as part of the Automobile Plant team, and after that he received an invitation to the national team, for which he played for three years. “Torpedo” was still headed by Maslov, who continued to believe in Streltsov’s talent. And the forward had the best period of his career. In 1967 and 1968 he was recognized as the best football player in the USSR.

There were rumors in the Soviet Union that the athlete hated women, but he had girlfriends and beloved women in his life. Streltsov’s first wife was Alla Demenko, with whom he entered into a secret marriage before he went to Melbourne for the Olympics. The marriage broke up a year later, Edward was accused of rape. It is interesting that by that time the athlete had become a father; Alla gave birth to a daughter named Lyudmila.
After Edward was released from prison, he lost interest in life, he was no longer so interested in football, he began to drink more often and eventually went on a drinking binge. After a chance meeting with his ex-wife, he tried to restore the relationship, but his passion for alcohol destroyed everything. Soon he married a girl, Raisa, this happened in the fall of 1963. Personal life
Streltsov’s personal life was as difficult as his sports life. He was married twice. In his first marriage to Alla Demenko, he had a daughter, Lyudmila. It was because of Demenko that at one time Streltsov did not reciprocate Furtseva’s feelings. The footballer's marriage broke up after he was sent to prison.
Edward remarried after his release. With his second wife Raisa, they raised a son, whom they named Igor. He later recalled that before his death, his father only rhetorically asked why he was sent to prison.
Cause of death
Already in the early 80s, Edward began to have serious health problems. Lung disease eventually led to cancer. Again, my health was damaged by my stay in the camp. There he worked in quartz mines, which affected the athlete’s lungs.
On July 22, 1990, Streltsov died. He was buried at the Vagankovskoye cemetery.
Death
In the last years of his life, Streltsov complained of pain in his lungs and was repeatedly hospitalized with a diagnosis of pneumonia. In 1990, studies showed that the football player had malignant tumors.
Eduard Anatolyevich was admitted to an oncology hospital, but hospitalization only delayed the inevitable. In mid-July, Streltsov became worse and fell into a coma. Doctors resuscitated the patient, but the attack recurred. On July 22, 1990, the great Soviet football player died of lung cancer.
