The early years and education of Alexander Vasiliev
Alexander Alexandrovich Vasiliev was born on December 8, 1958 in Moscow.
Father - Alexander Pavlovich Vasiliev - a famous decorative artist. He is an academician, Honored Artist of the RSFSR, who devoted 50 years of his life to the theater.
Mother - Tatyana Ilyinichna Gulevich - actress of the Central Children's Theater (CDT), one of the first graduates of the Moscow Art Theater School, after leaving the stage, she taught stage speech at her alma mater.
Since childhood, Sasha loved to look at theatrical costumes, scenery and theatrical props. All this inspired the boy to come up with his own costumes and scenery for performances. Already at the age of four, he embodied his fantastic ideas in plasticine modeling. As the website “Find out everything” reports in the biography of fashion designer Vasiliev, he took reproductions from art books and photo albums that were kept in his home library as a model. At the age of twelve, the boy himself staged the play “The Wizard of the Emerald City,” for which he designed and made all the costumes and scenery.
During those same early years, he developed a passion for collecting antiques. Surprisingly, he found many valuable exhibits in trash heaps. One day he came across an icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, dating from the beginning of the eighteenth century. At that time, communal apartments were being resettled en masse. New residents tried to get rid of old things as quickly as possible, often not understanding their true value.
Sasha Vasiliev studied at the elite English Moscow school No. 29. But, as Wikipedia reports, he was expelled from school for poor performance and transferred to working youth school No. 127. But he managed to enroll in the Komsomol, since Konstantin Raikin , Anastasia Vertinskaya and Stanislav Sadalsky .
For the first time, Alexander showed himself on television in the popular children's programs “Theater Bell” and “Alarm Clock”.
Having received a certificate of secondary education, Vasiliev continued his studies at the production department of the Moscow Art Theater School, which he successfully graduated in 1981. He studied very well and even received a personal scholarship named after Stanislavsky . He willingly undertook to design excerpts from the performances of students of the acting department, thereby gaining experience and reputation for himself.
First love
Alexander Alexandrovich studied at a prestigious Moscow school together with the children of celebrities (Anton Tabakov, Elena Ulyanova, etc.). Among them was Masha Lavrova, whose relationship immediately became romantic. The young people fell in love with each other, and this love was the first and very strong for each of them. Special feelings gripped Sasha, who could not imagine a future life without his beloved.

Career of Alexander Vasiliev
Immediately after graduating from university, Vasiliev was gladly hired as a set designer at the theater on Malaya Bronnaya, where he immediately began creating costumes for the play “Wolves and Sheep.” However, he did not work in the theater for long - a year later he fictitiously married a French citizen and went with her to Paris.
Two months later, Alexander found a job. A French friend, a friend of his wife, helped him with this. She brought him together with Polish director Eva Levinson , who was going to stage the play “Pope Joanna” on the Paris stage and was looking for a set designer. The debut turned out to be successful - theater critics praised Vasiliev’s work, and Eva offered to collaborate on an ongoing basis. They made two more performances together, then other directors began to contact Vasiliev. There were, of course, downtimes, during which Vasiliev washed shop windows and pasted up posters, and sometimes sang Russian songs on the streets in the company of his Slovak friend, and quite successfully.
All this time, Alexander intensively studied French and achieved success in this. He even got a job at a Parisian fashion school to lecture.
At the same time, Vasiliev continued to work as a decorative artist, and already outside of France. Having accidentally found himself on the same plane as the director of the Icelandic National Theatre, Vasiliev showed him his drawings and was immediately invited to work in Reykjavik. The contract for five productions in the main theater of Iceland had the most favorable impact on Vasiliev’s professional reputation, giving him weight in artistic circles. At the same time, Alexander lectured on the history of costume at the Royal Academy of Arts of Belgium.
Soon, at one of his master classes, Vasiliev met the head of the Belgian Royal Flemish Ballet, Russian emigrant Valery Panov , who in the past was an outstanding dancer of the Mariinsky Theater. Panov invited Vasiliev to stage the ballet “The Idiot” based on Dostoevsky , and then signed a contract with him for seven more productions.
Alexander Vasiliev continued to work on his collection, and when it reached an impressive size, Vasiliev began organizing thematic exhibitions, which were very successful. Former French President Jacques Chirac was so impressed by the scale of the collection that he allocated a three-room apartment for it near the center of Paris.
Address of love
Within a year of completing the documents, Alexander managed to start his career as a costume designer. However, he was not happy about this, since all his thoughts were occupied by Masha. Finally, in 1982, the 23-year-old went to Paris in the hope of meeting his beloved. For several days in a row he came to the address given to him, but no one opened the door. The address was: rue Benard, house 27, not far from the Parneti metro station. It was not far from here that he settled, and after that, he remembered the address for the rest of his life.

Return of Alexander Vasiliev to Russia
Vasiliev lived in France until 2003. During this time he managed to work in many theaters. At the same time, Alexander continued to engage in teaching and educational activities, and he also designed the venues of theater festivals and the interiors of private houses and continued to collect antiques.
In 2003, Tatyana Ilyinichna, Alexander’s mother, died, and he was forced to return to Moscow to take over his inheritance rights. This took quite a lot of time, and while the trial was in progress, Vasiliev began to be offered to participate in various projects. Basically, these were beauty contests, the organizers of which dreamed of getting a professional of this level on the jury, and even one who came from France. Vasiliev did not refuse, because it was possible to make good money from this, so that later he could use this money to replenish his collection.
In the same year, the design studio “Interiors of Alexander Vasiliev” opened in Moscow and his first exhibitions were held. Having discovered that he had enough work in Russia, Vasiliev decided to stay in his homeland.
A year later, he organized a visiting school and appeared on television as the host of the “Blow of the Century” program.
In the fall of 2009, he took the place of host of the “Fashionable Sentence” program, replacing Vyacheslav Zaitsev , who left for health reasons. At the same time, Alexander performed on the radio, gave lectures at Moscow State University, the Ostankino Institute of Television and Radio Broadcasting and the MODA.RU school.
In 2011, he established the Lilia Alexandra Vasiliev Award for high achievements in interior design. The award is a handmade ceramic lily, awarded for interesting discoveries in the field of design and is considered very prestigious in artistic circles.
Vasiliev is the author of thirty books and unique photo albums dedicated to the history of pre-revolutionary, Soviet and post-Soviet fashion, as well as the architecture of Tsarist Russia. He has written several biographical collections telling about the lives of his famous ancestors. The author plans to publish the memoirs of Tatyana Leskova , the only great-granddaughter of the writer Nikolai Leskov and the founder of the Brazilian ballet school.
Recently, the fashion historian has been closely involved in his collection, which he plans to turn into a permanent museum in the near future. Several venues are already operating in Moscow, where unique exhibits from his collection are exhibited; thematic exhibitions are also held in various historical and art museums, not only in Russia, but also abroad.
The collection already contains more than 500 thousand exhibits, among which there are wardrobe items that belonged to such legendary personalities of the Soviet era as Maya Plisetskaya , Lyubov Orlova , Lyudmila Zykina , Galina Ulanova and many others. In October 2020, the exhibition “Fashion of the Silver Age” opened in Vladivostok - several dozen luxurious outfits, each of which was made in a single copy and amazes with the elegance of the cut, the quality of the materials used and the sophistication of the decor.
The beginning of a creative journey
At first Vasiliev did not understand the meaning of these words, but then he really realized that this was his lucky chance. Alexander spent a whole quarter of a century in Paris, and now remembers these times with warmth. The guy settled on the outskirts of the city and at first was content with minimal part-time jobs. I washed dishes in a Russian pancake house, put up posters, and sang Russian songs with a Slovak friend on the street. However, fate was favorable to such a purposeful young man. Within a month and a half, he signed his first contract, “Pope Joanna,” and then other offers and projects began to pour in.

Photo by Alexander Vasiliev before and after plastic surgery
Photos of Alexander Vasilyev before and after plastic surgery often appear on the Internet, but it is not always possible to tell about its authenticity. The fact is that he often says in his interviews that with the help of plastic surgery one can delay the aging process, but it is not yet clear whether he resorted to the services of surgeons himself.
At the same time, Alexander Alexandrovich believes that it is necessary to know moderation in everything, therefore he has a negative attitude towards those stars of Russian and world cinema and show business who too often resort to the services of plastic surgery.
He constantly repeats that natural beauty should remain in a person, which should be emphasized with properly selected makeup and stylish clothes. Vasiliev says that he loves everything about his appearance and figure, so he is not going to resort to plastic surgery for quite some time.
Alexander Alexandrovich is an incorrigible optimist who believes that everything can be easily fixed by changing your own type. At the same time, the famous master himself often experimented with his own appearance, constantly changing the length of his hair and beard, growing or shaving his mustache, but only during the French period of his life, since in the country of the Soviets he would have been condemned.
