Biography of Vyacheslav Butusov: personal life, creativity and interesting facts

Childhood and youth

Vyacheslav Butusov was born in 1961, in the small village of Bugach, located near Krasnoyarsk. The boy's parents are Gennady Dmitrievich and Nadezhda Konstantinovna. The family lived in Bugach for only a short time. Soon the Butusovs moved to Khanty-Mansiysk, then to Surgut, and Vyacheslav graduated from high school in Sverdlovsk (Ekaterinburg). After school, the young man became a student at the local architectural institute.

Vyacheslav Butusov in childhood and youth

At the university, Butusov met Dmitry Umetsky, with whom he later created one of the leading Soviet rock bands. But for now the guys just spent time playing guitars and trying to compose music. The musicians even recorded their debut album almost at home.

Despite his serious passion for rock, Vyacheslav managed to graduate from college and receive a higher education. Assigned as a design engineer, the young man ended up in an architectural bureau and even participated in the development of the appearance of the Yekaterinburg metro stations.

Music

Music attracted Butusov like a magnet. Every evening, the young man and his friends gathered at a local rock club and rehearsed for hours, honing their guitar skills and vocal timbre. Only in 1986, when the whole country learned about the Sverdlovsk group, Vyacheslav was able to fully concentrate on what he loved.

Vyacheslav Butusov recorded his first album, “Moving,” almost as a demo tape. In 1985, a young man as part of the group “Step” created the recording “Bridge”, which much later would be re-released as Vyacheslav’s solo album. In the same year, the professionally edited and arranged album “Invisible” was released. It was then that the first versions of the famous hits “Prince of Silence” and “The Last Letter” (“Goodbye America!”) were born. These and other songs from the first albums later appeared on subsequent records.

A year later, the Nautilus Pompilius group, consisting of Butusov, Umetsky and Ilya Kormiltsev, who joined them, released a disc that instantly made the musicians popular throughout the Soviet Union. It was the album “Separation”, which contained the songs “Khaki Ball”, “Chained by One Chain”, “Casanova”, “View from the Screen”, which sounded from every home across the country.

The next recording, “Prince of Silence,” was no less popular, for which the soulful ballad “I want to be with you” was first published. Perestroika made adjustments - rock was no longer banned, and in 1989 the Nautilus group even received the Lenin Komsomol Prize, and positive articles about the work of musicians began to appear in the main publication of the Komsomol organization Smena.

In 1991, on his 30th birthday, Vyacheslav starred in the video “What is Autumn?” The video takes place in an autumn park, where a trio of friends: Yuri Shevchuk (author), Konstantin Kinchev and Butusov are playing Russian roulette. Boris Grebenshchikov was also expected to appear in the video, but he never appeared. There was no strictly prescribed script for the video, but the video was a success and made the song about autumn popular for a long time.

In 1993, the Nautilus Pompilius album “Foreign Land” was released, the song from which, “Walking on Water,” became a popular hit. Two videos were recorded for it, the composition was covered by other groups and performers: “DDT”, “Kalinov Most”, “Exit”, Elena Vaenga. The author himself called the song a universal parable, and not a retelling of a religious plot.

Today Yuri Shevchuk celebrates his birthday.

In 1994, work on the album “Titanic” was completed. Vadim Samoilov (founder of the Agatha Christie group) took part in the recording. Vyacheslav approached Vadim with a proposal to record an album when only Potapkin remained with him in the group. So, the three of them recorded the collection. Butusov was responsible for vocals and guitar, Samoilov was responsible for guitar and keys, and Potapkin had to cope, in addition to keyboards and guitar, with bass. “Titanic” stands apart from Butusov’s albums – this is the period of the group’s transition to a new sound.

“Nautilus Pompilius” existed for 15 years, while the composition changed regularly. The group moved to the capital of Soviet rock - Leningrad, where a new period began in the creative biography of the musicians, no less fruitful than the previous one. The musical group has released 12 studio albums, not counting several concert recordings. The group’s first album recorded in the Northern capital was the disc “Wings”, which included the tracks “Lonely Bird”, “Living Water”, “Christ”. The disc was released in 1996.

In addition to those listed, the songs “Walking on Water,” “On the Bank of a Nameless River,” “Titanic,” and “Breath” became hits.

In 1997, Vyacheslav Butusov began his solo career. The musician released independent albums “Illegitimate...” and “Ovals”, which included the hits “Beach”, “Helicopter”, “Zvezdochka”, “Bird-Locomotive”.

The artist released a joint disc “Elisobarra-torr” with the St. Petersburg team “Deadushki”. For the songs of the album “Nastasya”, “Trilliput” creates videos. The tracks “Spare Dreams” and “My Star” became hits.

To record the album “Star Padl,” Butusov gathered musicians from the Kino group, which disbanded after the death of Viktor Tsoi. The lyrics for the compositions were written by Evgeny Golovin, arranged by Kasparyan and Tikhomirov. The album did not receive fan recognition.

Together with guitarist Yuri Kasparyan, Vyacheslav created a new band “U-Piter”, which existed until February 2021.

Vyacheslav Butusov and the group “Order of Glory”
This group started with the song “Shock Love” and the debut album “Name of the Rivers”. This was followed by the albums “Biography”, “Mantis”, “Flowers and Thorns” and the last one to date, “Gudgora”. The main hits of this group are “Song of the One Going Home”, “Girl Around the City” and “Children of the Minutes”. By the way, before the release of the Gudgora disc, several songs were released as homemade videos, which Vyacheslav Butusov personally edited.

In the second half of the 90s, Vyacheslav Butusov began collaborating with director Alexei Balabanov. The director invited the musician to play a cameo role in the social drama “Brother,” for which Vyacheslav also recorded the soundtrack. Later, the director used Butusov’s song “Gibraltar-Labrador,” which he created for the disc “Pentagonal Sin,” for the second part of the blockbuster starring Sergei Bodrov Jr.

The musician wrote soundtracks for a number of films - “War”, “Zhmurki”, “Needle Remix” - and appeared as a cameo in a dozen documentaries and feature films.

In an April 2015 interview on the “Alone with Everyone” program, the musician admitted that he was always afraid of the people he performed in front of. Each concert became a test for the singer, perhaps his manner of closing his eyes while singing is connected with this.

At performances that again brought together full halls and stadiums, Vyacheslav presented the collection “Goodbye, America!” with the best Nautilus songs recorded with new versions of arrangements. In addition to the rock composition of the group - bass guitarist Ruslan Gadzhiev, guitarist Slava Suori, drummer Denis Marinkin - the concerts also feature the children's choir of radio and television of St. Petersburg, soloists of the vocal quartet Backin Black, trumpeter Vadim Eilenkrig and Indians with ethnic instruments. Together with pianist Ekaterina Mechetina, the musician performed two compositions - “Poor Bird” and “Golden Spot”.

2019 was an anniversary year for the Nautilus Pompilius team; the team turned 35 years old. With the Encore concert, Butusov visited Bryansk, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Orenburg, Yekaterinburg and Nizhny Novgorod. In the same year, the musician recorded the album “Hallelujah,” which became the debut for his new group “Order of Glory.” Videos were shot for the song from the collection: in 2021 - “Children are on the Internet” (directed by Oleg Rakovich), and in 2021 - “Idiot” (under the direction of Vladimir Ponomarev).

On September 3, 2021, as part of the “Eshchenepozner” project, Vyacheslav gave an interview to Nikolai Solodnikov.

In October 2021, Butusov’s musical group released the song “City,” dedicated to St. Petersburg. Later, a video was shot for the song, directed by Andrey Efimov.

What Vyacheslav Butusov was silent about

The history of “Nautilus” begins back in 1983, when two bosom comrades, students of the Sverdlovsk Architectural Institute, Vyacheslav Butusov and Dmitry Umetsky, recorded their first album “Moving”. Teenagers do not yet know about the fame that will fall on them in the very near future. Butusov, of course, is not yet thinking about either the big stage or the career of a solo musician. However, a start has already been made and literally a couple of years later, in collaboration with Ilya Kormiltsev, he creates his new creation - the album “Invisible”. It is thanks to him that the group receives full concert halls and numerous discussions in the media.

Over the next 10 years, the legends of “Ural rock” conquered not only the domestic stage, but also big cinema. According to the script, the hero of Sergei Bodrov Jr. in the legendary films “Brother” and “Brother-2” is an ardent fan of Butusov’s work and in numerous episodes either buys rare CDs of “Nautilus Pompilius” or simply enjoys his favorite music. It is no secret that Sergei Bodrov Jr. greatly respected Vyacheslav’s music.

Butusov was the author of music not only for “Brother”. His compositions are heard in the films “Zhmurki” and “War” by Alexey Balabanov, as well as “Igla-remix” by Rashid Nugmanov. And no wonder: the style of both “Nautilus” and “U-Peter” seems to be specially created to complement the image of “controversial” heroes. At first glance, they are not at all “positive”, but at the same time they manage to live exclusively according to the laws of conscience and justice.

The last album of “Nautilus Pompilius” was published in 1996, but Vyacheslav continues his studio and concert activities as a soloist of the “new” band “U-Piter”, still embodying one of the icons of Russian rock. In 2004, he received the prestigious Russian award “Golden Gramophone” for the song “Girl in the City”, in 2011 - the Order of Merit for the Fatherland for his great contribution to the development of musical art.

But few people know that Vyacheslav’s life is not limited to creative activity. He regularly supports a variety of charitable projects. So, in 2009, together with other well-known rock performers of the national stage, Butusov took part in a charity concert in support of the Elizaveta Glinka Foundation “Fair Aid”.

If in Soviet times the musician personified a certain mysterious figure, then in recent years he has increasingly wanted to speak out. In a recent conversation with reporters from the Interview portal, he admitted that if for most rock performers a live concert is a certain exchange of energy with their listeners, then for Vyacheslav live performance on stage, as a rule, becomes true torture.

For me, a concert is always torment and overcoming. When I go out to an audience, even a small one, it is very difficult for me to withstand this onslaught.

Butusov also said that this “torment” is a feeling exactly like the last few years. After all, even in the peak years of the fame of the Nautilus Pompilius group, there was not such a strict schedule with its daily concerts.

Well, the phenomenon of Vyacheslav Butusov has truly remained a mystery over the past decades. While most of the rock bands of the 80s era went into oblivion, leaving their memory only on records, Butusov’s team, even after the “breakup”, receives nationwide love. Today "U-Piter" performs concerts all over the world, collecting full halls and stadiums.

Anything could happen in the career of a famous musician. There are attempts to “understand oneself” with the help of alcohol, and turbulent youth with “final” departures from the stage, and much more. But today Butusov has long been different. He doesn’t hide his true emotions, doesn’t do anything he doesn’t want to do, and simply does the main thing – his creativity.

Creation

It should be noted that Vyacheslav is a creative person. In addition to music and lyrics for songs, Butusov writes poetry and prose.

In 2007, the singer published his first book, “Virgostan,” which included the musician’s stories. Then the works “Antidepressant” came out. Co-Search" and "Archiya".

In 2013, Butusov, together with Chulpan Khamatova, Andrei Makarevich and Sergei Makovetsky, performed in the charity animated project “Flying Animals”, performing the song “We are Flying”. The project is a musical series where each episode ends with a song. Proceeds from the concerts went to help children with cancer.

The artist also does not forget his long-standing passion for drawing. A collection of poems by Ilya Kormiltsev was published with illustrations created by Butusov. In one interview, Vyacheslav shared that it would be nice to become an animator or director of a choir of very young children.

Writer's career

The biography of Vyacheslav Butusov is rich and interesting. He also tried himself as a writer. His trilogy was released in 2007. The first is “Verika”, this is an everyday tale, then “Conditions”, the so-called guide to everyday conditions, and the last everyday novel is “Virgostan”. The books were published in small editions, but gained great popularity. A couple of months later, the musician, together with Nikolai Yakimchuk, wrote another book called “Antidepressant. Co-Seeking.” Four years later, another book, “Archiya,” was written.

Vyacheslav Butusov biography personal life

Personal life

Vyacheslav Butusov got married for the first time when he still lived in Yekaterinburg. The young man's wife was the architect and costume designer Marina Dobrovolskaya. The couple met at the architectural institute. Marina’s mother received her future son-in-law rather coldly, but then fell in love with him - Vyacheslav helped the women survive the loss of their father and husband. The young people got married six months after their first meeting. The couple had a daughter, Anna, in 1980. The Butusovs loved to make albums with photographs, with a funny caption under each photo.

Rehearsals for the Nautilus Pompilius group began in the couple's apartment.

Along with popularity, problems came to the family: crazy fans, racketeers and, finally, separation. Butusov went to St. Petersburg, together with the group they rented a house in Kolomyagi, lived and rehearsed there. Marina bounced between her husband and daughter, who remained in Sverdlovsk.

Divorce naturally followed. At this point, the singer already had another woman. Marina later recalled that the last month before the breakup was like a honeymoon. And when Slava left, his wife found a letter in the hallway in which her husband asked Dobrovolskaya to live her own life and announced a divorce. The documents at the registry office were completed quickly: when the employees saw Butusov, they did everything in one day without any questions, although according to the rules, if there is a child, a husband and wife must be divorced through the court.

Wedding of Vyacheslav Butusov and Marina Dobrovolskaya
The musician played his second wedding after moving to St. Petersburg. Butusov's chosen one was Anzhelika Estoeva. The future spouses met when the girl was 18 years old, and the singer turned out to be 9 years older than his beloved. Then Angelica did not yet know that Vyacheslav was a star. The presence of a wife did not interfere with the developing romance: the artist said that the spiritual connection with Marina had long been lost.

Estoeva was able to make friends with Slava’s eldest daughter, Anna. The girl was nine years old at the time, and she trusted her dad’s new wife with all her secrets.

In marriage with Angelica, three children were born - daughters Sofia and Ksenia, who in 2013 made Butusov a grandfather, giving her father a granddaughter Divna, and a son, Daniil, born in 2005.

Once Vyacheslav said that he found himself when he met his second wife. Until the moment he met Angelica, the man seemed to be in a gaseous state. This is exactly how he described his life without Estoeva.

Vyacheslav Butusov and his wife revealed their most secret things. In “Alone with Everyone,” the rock legend of the 90s appeared as an exemplary family man.

Vyacheslav Butusov and his wife Anzhelika Estoeva
Vyacheslav and his family live on the outskirts of St. Petersburg. According to Vyacheslav, this makes life very easy and helps create: strangers rarely wander into this area.

At the peak of his popularity, Vyacheslav Butusov had problems with alcohol. Once the famous artist admitted that he had almost reached the brink. Angelica said that after 10 years of marriage, Slava realized that due to his addiction he could lose his family. Then the couple went to the temple, and this helped the singer. Now the author helps people suffering from alcoholism.

Thousands of fans follow their favorite celebrity on the social network Instagram. Vyacheslav has been maintaining a microblog there since 2021. The artist shares personal and work photos with subscribers.

The author once said about his character that he is a “sadomasochist” by nature, and a man’s weapon is patience.

Even today, when Vyacheslav’s age has crossed the 50-year mark, fans note the beauty and attractiveness of the idol. The stately (height – 173 cm, weight – 68 kg) artist still attracts the attention of the fairer sex.

Spiritual growth is helped by... love!

More than 25 years have passed since changes took place within Butusov, he writes about this in many interviews.

I liked how touchingly his wife Angelica writes about him, about his quests and lying on the sofa.

And this had to be endured, probably it was out of very great love, about which Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh wrote:

“Thanks to mutual faith and love, two people outgrow all discord and become one being, one person in two persons. When they treat each other as a shrine, all their relationships, including physical ones, are transformed into a sacrament, into something that surpasses the Earth and ascends to eternity.”

They skillfully combine female intuition and male logic, and no one pulls the blanket on themselves. Peace and tranquility in the family are very cherished throughout the 30 years they have been together. Irresponsibility in youth was replaced by care and respect for each other. And this is also spiritual growth. But without love, everything might not have happened! “Love lives in their house” to this day!
