Dad was openly threatened

– RAIKINS have always been long-livers.
Dad's grandfather was still dancing on the table at the age of 90. Thank God, my father’s two sisters are alive (one is now 89 years old, the other is 86). It seems to me that dad could have lived much longer if not for his genre. And it is irresponsible to say that Raikin had a happy, cloudless life. This is what those who don’t know how much nerves the release of each program cost him think! He was openly threatened at a very high level. And how many rumors of all kinds were spread to reduce his incredible authority among the people! - Which ones?

“I don’t even want to think about it.” They were all so dirty and disgusting. Most of the Leningrad bosses were afraid of him and interfered as best they could, forcing him to throw out entire monologues. Once a journalist from Leningradskaya Pravda dared to write that “Raikin is always relevant.” Zakharov, deputy, immediately came to the editorial office. First Secretary of the Leningrad Regional Committee, and demanded that the editorial office forget Raikin’s name, since he “caused damage to ideological work in Leningrad and should be driven out of here.”

“In the end they achieved it.”

– The story of dad’s move to Moscow is very indicative. Since the war, he had developed good relations with Brezhnev, but he always felt the distance and did not try to remind him of himself. In the early 60s, when Brezhnev was still chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet, they met at a reception after a concert.

- Well, how are you living? – Brezhnev asked.

- Fine.

- How good is it? You're still living in a hotel. Do you need an apartment in Moscow?

- It would be nice…

Five years passed, they met again, remembered the war, and finally Brezhnev said that the order for the apartment had already been given. But everything froze again. And then a kind man from the Mossovet hinted to my father that he needed to talk to the Leningrad authorities. Dad called the then first secretary of the regional committee, Tolstikov, and said that his “okay” was needed, and added that we were only talking about an apartment, and the theater remained in Leningrad.

- I understand that the theater is not expensive for you, you have not been to us, however, as well as to other theaters.

– Why don’t the intelligentsia like me so much?

- And you issue an order so that they start loving you from May 1st.

Saying goodbye, the father said:

– I’m sorry that you have a different opinion with the Secretary General.

- What, is there such an opinion? - he was surprised and immediately added: - Do you think Tolstikov is a fool? I’ll leave you an apartment in Leningrad too.

My parents got an apartment in Moscow and moved all their things there. They hadn’t been in Leningrad for more than a year, then they called to book a hotel room, and they were told that their former home was really untouched. At first we lived in an empty apartment and had lunch on the windowsill. But Tolstikov did not leave this matter like that. Kosygin arrived in Leningrad, went to a performance at the Bolshoi Drama Theater, and Tolstikov began to sing to him: “And what about our Raikin!” Not only is he in Moscow, he also has an apartment in Leningrad...' They say that Tovstonogov, who was sitting next to him, prevented him from continuing the denunciation. Then Tolstikov was appointed ambassador to China, and Grigory Romanov took his place. He never wanted to see Raikin at all. Dad tried many times to get through to him - in vain.

Childhood and family

Arkady was born in the city of Riga. Parents were Jews, father Isaac Davidovich worked in the port as a scaffold scraper, mother Elizaveta Borisovna was a housewife. Arkasha was the eldest son, had two more sisters Bella and Sophia, and a younger brother Maxim.

During the First World War, the family emigrated to Rybinsk. There, children showed local performances. Arkashka's first role went to the murdered merchant. When the father saw his son’s antics in front of the mirror, he whipped him and shouted: “A Jew should not be a clown, this will never happen! If you are so drawn to be an artist, make music!”

Then they bought Arkady a violin. But the boy used it to ride down the hill, and used the bow as the reins of an improvised sled. Until the age of 13, Arkady Raikin grew up as an absolutely healthy child, but at this age he fell ill with a sore throat. An infection set in and the boy ended up in a hospital bed.

Doctors did not give positive prognoses. The infection progressed throughout the body. It was difficult for young Raikin to move; it was painful to even have a sheet on his body. The illness changed his character, he became a closed and thoughtful person, and depth appeared in his gaze.

Despite the forecasts, the boy pulled through. Ten years later the disease recurred. The only chance of survival was surgery to remove the tonsils. It was successful, but the consequences left an imprint for life. A heart defect appeared.

In 1922 the family moved to Petrograd. Young Arkashka became a regular at the theaters. He often went to performances, the controllers recognized him and sometimes let him in for free. If necessary, he sold notebooks and textbooks to buy a ticket. The father did not like his hobby, and he spanked his son. The boy never cried - he clenched his teeth tightly and endured it.

At school, Raikin's favorite subject was drawing. During the lesson, his finest hour came, the teacher noted the student’s talent and prophesied a career as a painter. Arkady really chose between painting and theater, but the latter won. His parents were against this decision, and Arkady had to leave home and live in a dormitory.

Mom was in pain, but she endured

– Did your FATHER share his problems with you?

- Of course, I shared. And with me, and especially with my mother. I can’t even imagine how he would live without her.

– How did they meet each other?

– Dad performed in school amateur performances, and one day they were invited to go on a “tour” to the neighboring school No. 41

This is how dad recalled it: “I go on stage, perform and suddenly pay attention to a high school girl sitting in the fifteenth row. The girl was wearing a red beret, notable not only for its brightness, but also for the fact that a hole was made in it, and a strand of blue-black hair was passed through it

I didn’t yet know that the girl’s name was Roma. A year and a half later I saw her on Nevsky. I recognized it instantly. She walked past me. She walked as if everyone had to give way to her. I wanted to talk to her, but I didn’t dare.

Three more years passed. I was already in my last year of college. One day I come to our student canteen and stand in line. Someone stood behind me. At first I don't notice who it is. But suddenly I felt something. I turn around and she’s standing behind me. She spoke first, and I remember this conversation word for word.

– It’s so good that you also study here.

Me after a pause:

- What are you doing tonight?

- Nothing.

- Let's go to the cinema.

- Let's go...

That same evening we met at the Grand Palace cinema. What did we watch? God knows. I looked at her all the time. As soon as the session began, I leaned towards her and whispered:

“Marry me.”

A few days later, my mother agreed, but they got married much later - her parents were categorically against student marriage.

– What did Arkady Isaakovich call your mother at home?

- Romochka or Chamomile. Kostya and I used to say 'mommy' or 'mummy', and I also called her 'mummy'. Mom was a beauty. Very bright, talented, cheerful, deeply educated. She knew a lot of stories, anecdotes, and even Irakli Andronikov, when he came to visit his parents, always said: “Romochka is a wonderful storyteller, it’s better for me to keep quiet.” She also had literary talent, noted by many critics, but she did not have enough time to write. She played in the theater, was dad's secretary and literally never left the phone. I said: 'Mom, you are like a goat on a string. You can’t do this, you have to take breaks.” I hated the phone and still look at it as an enemy because it took my mother away from me all my life.

– Your father was constantly surrounded by beautiful actresses and fans... Wasn’t your mother jealous?

“There were moments when I realized that it was hard, hurtful, painful for my mother. But what can you do, c'est la vie, as the French say. She was a very wise woman. There were critical periods that cost her a lot of health, but she had to endure and survive. She loved her dad very much, so she threw her whole life, all her talents, at his feet. She understood who Raikin was. After all, why often don’t two talented people get along together? Someone must sacrifice themselves for the sake of life and love together. But not everyone can do this. Of course, dad was grateful to her. This was especially true when my mother got sick. Dad looked after her, was very gentle and attentive with her.

I miraculously survived the war

– EKATERINA Arkadyevna, do you remember your first impressions of your father?

“I was in my fourth year when the war began, so the terrible vicissitudes that happened to me interrupted all my former bright memories. Parents served at the front, traveled all over the country, naturally, they could not drag a little girl with them. And my grandparents remained in besieged Leningrad. My mother gave me to someone else’s aunt in Tashkent. My parents sent her food, but I didn’t get anything. Alone, small, without parents, all sick, hungry, with eczema, with dysentery - I’m surprised how I even stayed alive then. If my grandmother had come for me two months later, I would not have made it...

And my first happy memory is connected with 1945. My parents took me on tour to Sochi, and then we stayed there for two months to rest, I was even late for 1st grade. Together with my dad, we ran, swam, played ball, jumped like goats on giant steps - it’s such a carousel. I was happy that I was close to my parents, and I was terrified of tearing myself away from them.

– Did you and Kostya live together as children or did you bully each other?

“He and I have a 12-year difference; I already appeared on stage when he was born.” At the age of 17 she went to Moscow to study, at the age of 19 she got married, had her own family, her own worries. I have always adored Kotya and still admire him. He grew into a Master. When I look at him now, every time I think: “Lord, what a happiness it would be if my parents saw him.” How proud they would be of him."

– Were there times when you upset your parents?

– Once there was a very funny incident. When guests arrived, I usually met them, pulled out some bottle on the table, placed glasses, drank a little myself... I remember Kostya somehow running up to me, his eyes wide.

- What's happened? - I ask.

- Mom said you're a drunkard.

- Are you crazy? - I tell him.

Mom later explained her concern to me: “Katenka, well, I see that you have this habit in your house and at our house you sometimes drink a glass.” “Mom, I’ll never get drunk, it’s not in our genes,” I reassured her. And then Kostya, laughing, asked me for a long time when we met: “Well, aren’t you drunk yet?”

– Didn’t Arkady Isaakovich use it either?

- Never. I could sit the whole evening with one glass of cognac. And I couldn’t stand nicknames in the theater

any alcoholic manifestations. I remember there was a drinking man in their orchestra. Noticing this, dad decided to teach him a lesson. One day I came to a restaurant for dinner and saw this musician with a full glass. Dad stood up and approached him: 'What do you have?' – 'Water'. – 'I'm so thirsty!' - he said and drank this glass in one gulp. Mom later said that he came into the room and simply “died” until the morning. A man who doesn't drink! But that artist understood this harsh warning and did not drink anymore.

– How did Arkady Isaakovich feel about so-called profanity? Could you throw in a word?

“I couldn’t even imagine that dad could say something like that.” Sometimes my mother, telling a joke, warned: “There is a word here that you cannot remove from the song, you will forgive me.” “Romochka, please don’t,” he asked her. And even when I heard something like “ass,” I started to wince. This was his upbringing.

Choosing a life path

Ekaterina Raikina decided to become an actress at the age of 12. It was then that the girl first appeared on the stage of the E. Vakhtangov Theater. Ekaterina made her debut in the play “Les Miserables” directed by Nikolai Akimov. In this production she played young Cosette. Initially it was assumed that this role would be played by another actress, but this girl was unable to take part in the performance.

Ekaterina Raikina in her youth

Ekaterina turned 17 when her family moved to Moscow. After graduating from school, she became a student at the Shchukin School on her first try. It was not easy to study, but it was very interesting. My student years flew by unnoticed.
