Wedding photo shoot in St. Petersburg - the best places in bad weather

Wedding walk on Elagin Island

Elagin Island is one of the popular, and one might say “ergonomic” places in the center of St. Petersburg for a photo shoot on your wedding day. In an hour or two here you can film a fairly large piece of a wedding series, or even the entire series.

The park is huge, but it is laid out very conveniently; many different locations are located within walking distance of each other. You can take pictures in the alleys, walk a few steps, and take shots against the backdrop of the palace, near the lanterns, or among the columns, then near the river, and so on. The park has everything you need to photograph a classic wedding walk: greenery, architecture, and water.

What else is good about Elagin? On the one hand, this is ceremonial Petersburg, ideal for beautiful “mantelpiece” photographs, as they say now, that are placed in a frame on a shelf. And if a wedding photographer initially works in a classic style, then Elagin Island is for him.

Pavlovsk Palace

The palace is located in Pavlovsk, a ten-minute drive from Pushkin.

Wedding photo shoot in Pavlovsk Palace

  • Everyone will be given special slippers to avoid scratching the floor, so it is advisable that the bride wear a long dress. Perhaps something has changed with this item. You need to check with the palace administration.
  • Price 5000 rub.
  • Wedding photography is carried out by appointment. Tel. Duration no more than 1 hour, no more than 5 people, using 1 camera.

Business complex "St. Petersburg Plaza"

A modern business center made of glass and concrete, similar ones can probably be found in the center of every modern metropolis. Here it’s good to shoot something creative, with reflections, geometric - with wide-angle lenses. If, for example, you first shoot a classic, atmospheric old St. Petersburg, and then, for contrast, take a photograph against the background of the huge mirrored windows of a business center, you will end up with something completely non-standard, it may seem that you have been transported somewhere from St. Petersburg to Guangzhou or Tokyo.

Plus the color turns out interesting - gray and blue. And since the windows have a mirror effect, they enhance this blue. Color is also important in the series. When you shoot, for example, in Elagin, there are white palaces, green trees, and if you’re lucky with the weather, the sky is blue. But here, in the same weather, everything is blue and steel, and this adds a nice touch to the wedding series. Couples come here ready for creativity and an unconventional approach.

Bolsheokhtinsky Bridge

The Peter I Bridge is beautiful in itself; it has long become one of the calling cards of the city. His appearance in the series immediately announces that the wedding is taking place in St. Petersburg. I don’t know such bridges in other cities, and there is only one like this in St. Petersburg.

Here you have the opportunity to work with geometry, rhythms, you can take a long exposure photo of the bride and groom, showing the movement of cars. The pedestrian path also makes for interesting shots - there is excellent perspective, depth, rhythm, and the bridge tower adds color. There you can also go down to the water and to the embankment, from where you have an excellent view of the Bolsheokhtinsky Bridge - this is its modern name. Thus, in this place you can shoot a full-fledged series.

In general, as you know, there are a lot of bridges in St. Petersburg. But, in my opinion, besides Bolsheokhtinsky, it’s interesting to shoot only on three. These are the bridges at the Savior on Spilled Blood and the Lomonosov Bridge. The Lomonosov bridge over the Fontanka is beautiful in itself. And at the Savior on Spilled Blood there is a unique “triple bridge” - the bridges converge at one point, from them there is a beautiful view of the Moika River and the cathedral.

Rooftops of St. Petersburg

Roofs in wedding photos are a purely St. Petersburg thing. Half of the newlyweds strive to get to the roof to get shots with a beautiful view of the old city. The city even offers rooftop excursions with photo sessions. But not every roof has a good view. I myself live in the center, we have access to the roof, but nothing interesting can be seen from it. The difficulty is to find a beautiful panorama and get to the roof from which you can see it. If there is such an opportunity, and the guys are ready to go upstairs in wedding dresses, then cool shots are guaranteed.

Wedding in winter

Winter wedding? - Why not? Like a celebration at any other time, it has its advantages: it just seems that frost, snow and early darkness can ruin the whole holiday.

Winter weddings also have their drawbacks, which make them less popular than summer ceremonies, but there are not so many of them, if you look at them.

So let's talk about the benefits first.

Benefits of a winter wedding

  • Submitting an application to the registry office: no queues!

In winter, St. Petersburg registry offices and wedding palaces are quiet: there are no queues at all. The only exceptions may be the days at the end of November - that’s when couples who want to get married on New Year’s Eve submit applications.

On other days, you can come and calmly submit an application on any desired date and choose a convenient time for painting.

Not too many couples will be here on your wedding day - and this is very good: no confusion, turmoil, confusion, no problems with parking near the registry office and other hassle typical of summer weddings.

  • Budget savings

From December to March, photographers, videographers , wedding agencies and restaurants experience a “dead” season - a long lull when their services are in minimal demand.

Thus, you have the opportunity to save very significantly on literally everything - from your wedding hairstyle to the cost of rent and the banquet in the restaurant itself.

Of course, cold cuts, salads and other dishes made from fresh vegetables will cost much more than in the summer, but the rest of the menu and room rental will cost less.

  • Wedding photo shoot

Who said that a winter wedding photo shoot is in some way inferior to a summer or spring one? If the frost is crackling outside and the trees are shrouded in snow, then the background for filming can be chosen in such a way that your friends who signed in the summer will be jealous!

In addition, cold weather guarantees that the bride will not have to endlessly touch up her makeup and suffer from unbearable heat in a tight dress.

Even if you are very unlucky with the weather, you can compensate for the failure with a photo shoot in a studio, restaurant or hotel, as well as in numerous St. Petersburg museums and palaces. Read more about where to take photos at a winter wedding here.

Of course, you will have to make allowances for the time of year: take care of warm things - fur coats, fur capes, gloves, warm and comfortable shoes that do not stand out too much from the general style of your outfit, take a thermos with tea with you to keep warm in between filming.

Places for photo shoots, a restaurant for a banquet - it’s better to choose all this taking into account the weather: the less time you spend in wedding dresses outside, the less likely it is that you’ll both come down with a cold tomorrow.

  • Banquet

Not only noticeable savings speak in favor of winter weddings: in winter, in the halls of restaurants there is no summer stuffiness, from which even air conditioners working at full power cannot help.

The dishes on the tables look fresh and appetizing longer, the greens do not wither so quickly and the aspic does not “spread,” and guests can tolerate alcohol more easily than in the heat.

In addition, there is an opportunity to go outside and freshen up: the ambient temperature is just conducive to this.

  • Honeymoon

“Off season” in winter and in travel agencies: the peak has long passed, so prices for wedding tours are declining. Your honeymoon somewhere in Europe will be no worse than a summer one, because European capitals and resorts are beautiful at any time of the year, but in winter there is no such influx of tourists.

A tour somewhere in the tropics will generally take you from cold, snowy St. Petersburg to real summer - and then your wedding, in terms of the number of impressions and emotions, will not be much different from the summer one.

Disadvantages of a winter wedding

There are very few of them: the likelihood of worsening weather, possible ice and the rapid onset of darkness - that, perhaps, is all that can be counted among the disadvantages of a winter wedding.

If you love frost, snow, winter forest and riding in a fast three-wheeler, this wedding is just for you.

As you can see, a wedding in winter is quite convenient and allows you to save money, so you shouldn’t neglect the opportunity to get married in December or January: nature doesn’t have bad weather.

Center of St. Petersburg

In the city center, literally in a small area, you can find many great places for a wedding photo shoot. For example, come to Gostiny Dvor, where the Kazan Cathedral, Singer House, Nevsky Prospekt, Spas on Spilled Blood, Griboyedov Canal, Mikhailovsky Garden are located, and within one and a half to two hours film in several locations at once, and get around it all on foot. Each photographer has his own favorite spot in the center of St. Petersburg, I like this one. In addition, you can vary the shooting points - exclude or add something without compromising the photo shoot. This is a platform where you can really do a lot in a short period of time. This is a recognizable St. Petersburg, but at the same time, not ceremonial, but more lively. A photo session here will obviously differ from a formal “palace” one - it’s more like a walk through your favorite places in the city, while the bride in a wedding dress will look very contrasting against the background of St. Petersburg’s everyday life.

Singer House

In the Singer House, practically without leaving it, it is quite possible to film a wedding mini-series. On the second floor there is a cafe with huge windows through which you can see Kazansky. Previously, people were allowed in there for free, but now filming is paid. You can film there, then in a bookstore. Moreover, on the ground floor you can take shots from the outside through the window so that you can see the guys inside and at the same time the Savior on Spilled Blood. In the Singer House there is a modern business center, through which you can get to the roof of the building to the ball.

Kazan Cathedral

In my opinion, a very cool place to shoot a wedding story. Both in conjunction with that same nickel, and as a separate, self-sufficient location. In addition, in St. Petersburg we always create two routes for a walk: “dry” and “wet”. In case of rain, if the shooting is in the center, I always include the Singer House and the Kazan Cathedral in the “wet” route. Naturally, we don’t take pictures inside the cathedral, only in the colonnade. Most of it, unfortunately, is closed, but if you manage to get there, this is a guarantee of wonderful photographs: scale, perspective, lighting of the couple - everything “works” for the photographer. At the entrance to the temple, the columns are lower and there are fewer of them, but I also like this colonnade, it turns out very rhythmic and geometric. In general, filming a short episode from Kazansky, which will dilute a large wedding series, can be done easily and, which is now a rarity, for free.

Entrances

In the historical part of St. Petersburg you can find houses with large and beautiful entrances - with spiral staircases and luxurious windows. There aren’t many of them, and you won’t be able to film everywhere - sometimes there’s not enough space, or there’s not enough light, or it’s simply impossible to get there. For example, on Fontanka there is a round house with a rotunda, and the entrance is also round. But it is very difficult to get into the house, because the residents are not at all enthusiastic about those who want to look at the entrance, of which there are a lot of people, due to the uniqueness of the house.

And if when shooting a love story you are not limited in time, during a wedding photo shoot there is strict timing. And so, imagine, you arrive in the hope of taking cool shots in an unusual place, and you don’t get to the front door. Therefore, I have “my own” entrances, where the hit percentage is 99.9. Why I love them - there you can shoot a good series in terms of light and geometry. This is a great place for a wet route. And this is the real Peter. You can, for example, shoot in the center, in a park, in an entrance - here's an atmospheric St. Petersburg wedding series. And not monotonous. And not just endless palaces and columns.

Talion

Wedding photo shoot in St. Petersburg - the best places in bad weather

This is a large hotel that allows you to conduct the entire wedding ceremony from preparing the bride to a luxurious banquet. The interior space is reminiscent of the Hermitage or the Polovtsev Mansion and is almost ideal for photography.

Beautiful spiral staircases and bright, spacious, superbly decorated premises of the Talion Hotel help you get unusual wedding photos, and the duration of the session is not regulated.

Vasilyevsky Island and Zayachiy Island

Usually one of the islands is chosen for a wedding walk, but sometimes they start from Vasilyevsky and then move to Zayachiy. This is also the center of St. Petersburg, but it is more formal than the Singer house and the Griboyedov Canal. This is exactly the place where St. Petersburg began. On the Spit of Vasilyevsky Island, newlyweds traditionally break glasses on balloons and release doves. From here you can see the Peter and Paul Fortress. Across the road is the Exchange, where you can also take pictures in the colonnade. From Zayachy there is a beautiful view of the Rostral columns and the ship “Grace”. On the island itself, you can film on the beach by the water overlooking the Winter Palace, in the fortress itself, and at the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul. This is the place for a full-fledged classic wedding photo shoot. Today the tradition with glasses is already dying out, but it is still a very popular place - in addition to tourists and city residents, you can meet five weddings at once on Strelka. You need to take into account the angle of the sunset - at sunset the sun shines towards Petropavlovka, which makes it difficult to photograph a couple with a view of the city without additional lighting.

Photo studios

Today it has become easier to choose a studio for a wedding photo shoot - due to their number and variety. For bad weather and winter, the studio is a must-have. But you don’t have to wait for rain; you can come in good weather. In St. Petersburg, in comparison with other cities, except Moscow, of course, there are a lot of large interior lofts where you can shoot a classic or, conversely, a creative wedding photo shoot. I like Studio 212, LeonaStage, Mimic, POLYGON. They have large halls, windows and a varied, high-quality interior - an excellent field for creativity.

Palaces

As you know, there are many palaces in St. Petersburg. But all the palaces of St. Petersburg are museums, where entrance for a photo shoot is not only paid, but expensive. At the same time, everything is fenced, there are visitors around, lighting equipment cannot be brought in, and the couple and the photographer are accompanied by a caretaker so that God forbid you break the rules. The shooting is quite monotonous and boring. In general, you will have to pay, suffer, obey the rules, and it is not very clear why. But if you really want it, you can always find a suitable option. So, for a wedding photo shoot in St. Petersburg, I would recommend the Yusupov Palace on the Moika. It’s less pretentious than the others, but the interior is very atmospheric, the entrance is more accessible and the caretakers are friendly (or so I’m lucky).

But still, in my opinion, it is better to find an interior studio, or stay in a hotel. Many hotels imitate the same luxurious interiors, and you can literally stand on your head there.

Greenhouses for a wedding photo shoot

A wedding photo shoot in a greenhouse can be a good substitute for a photo shoot in nature, if the weather or time of year does not allow you to take beautiful photos in green foliage. Of course, it will not replace photographs in the parks, but with the right approach from your photographer it will allow you to get some bright shots.

Greenhouse of the botanical garden

  • Address: st. Professor Popova, 2
  • Telephone:
  • Cost and conditions: 2210 rubles/hour (up to 8 people) daily 10.00-18.00

Comments: To conduct a photo session in the Greenhouse of the Botanical Garden, prior registration is required. In addition, you will have to arrive in advance and sign an agreement to conduct it. On the day of the photo shoot, you will be provided with a guide who will take you throughout the Greenhouse. As a rule, while you are taking photos with the photographer, the guide will give your guests a short tour. The entire shoot usually takes about 45 minutes.

Greenhouse of the Tauride Garden

  • Address: Potemkinskaya street, 2
  • Telephone:
  • Cost and conditions: 1650 rub./photo + 10 people, the rest for 55 rub.

Comments: Perhaps the only negative of this greenhouse is its size. You shouldn’t count on a long and varied photo session. But, if suddenly bad weather takes you by surprise before or after registration at Wedding Palace No. 2 (it is located next to it), then a photo shoot in this greenhouse can be your saving option. No pre-registration is required for the photo session.

Pushkinsky and Pavlovsky parks

Two parks I like to photograph my wedding walk in. Catherine and Pavlovsky. Most often, a photo session is carried out there if the marriage registration and wedding banquet are organized in cities where parks are located - Pushkin or Pavlovsk. By the way, the Pushkin Registry Office itself is an excellent place for a photo shoot - a real palace - Zapasny, also known as Nikolaevsky.

The parks are very different. In Tsarskoye Selo there is a ceremonial Catherine Palace, a large garden, pavilions, bridges, terraces, and ponds. This is a very beautiful park, where there is geometry, strict lines, and purity of color. You can walk there for one and a half to three hours, and have time to do everything or almost everything. This is an ideal place for a summer wedding photo shoot in nature.

Pavlovsk Park is more chaotic, in some places it just looks like a forest, but there are also beautiful places for a wedding photo shoot - alleys with perspectives, a river, a palace, gazebos. You need to go there if you want something simpler, less pretentious, nature in the photo, and not a palace complex.

Yusupov Palace

The iconic building with luxurious interiors has long been a popular location for wedding photo shoots. Particularly admired is the theater hall with its magnificent royal box and gilded decorative furnishings.

Wedding photo shoot in St. Petersburg - the best places in bad weather

A visit to the Yusupov Palace is only possible with a guide, so there are not very many tourists here. But it is available for photography only from October to May. It is necessary to agree in advance on the time of the photo session and make an advance payment.

Terraces of St. Petersburg

Many St. Petersburg restaurants are equipped with terraces with beautiful views. But in recent years they have stopped allowing them, or they charge a lot for filming. The possibility of photography was closed several years ago, when it became fashionable to be a wedding photographer and there was a large flow of filming in beautiful places - a real pilgrimage began. As a result, now renting a studio turns out to be more profitable from different points of view: it’s cheaper, there are no visitors, there is lighting equipment. You cannot walk in a cafe or restaurant, do whatever you want, or disturb visitors in any way. In the photo studio we are our own masters.

Hotels in St. Petersburg

But if you still want to take pictures during a wedding photo shoot against the backdrop of a beautiful view from the window, there is an excellent option. You can get ready for the bride in a hotel where there is access to a balcony, terrace, or rooftop with views of the old city. If you book a room, you can film not only in it, but also in the hall, on the stairs - in general, wherever you want. For your money, as they say, any whim. A wedding morning at a hotel is something I always recommend to my clients.

In the hotel you can film the preparations with good light and interiors. And then the staging, both of the bride and groom, and of each separately.

Now there are an unrealistic number of hotels in St. Petersburg. I like to work in those where the interiors remind us that we are in St. Petersburg. These are both old hotels and new ones, recently built, but which refer to the era of royal elegance at the turn of the century, such as one of the oldest - Grand Hotel Europe. This hotel and several others are on my short list: Grand Hotel Emerald, Angleterre, Hermitage Hotel, Kempinski Moika 22 Hotel, Sokos Hotels, Taleon Imperial Hotel, Four Seasons Lion Palace Hotel.

Space Freedom

This is a time cafe where you pay for the time spent in it. The usual rate is 3 rubles per minute of stay, but the minimum cost is 200 rubles. from each person from the company. However, visitors are provided with free tea, coffee and cookies.

You are allowed to bring your own food and drinks. A wide beautiful staircase and interesting decoration of the halls make this space desirable for a wedding photo shoot. But on weekends, the time cafe hosts various events with a large number of visitors, which makes holding a photo shoot at this time impossible.

A wide variety of interior spaces in ancient palaces in St. Petersburg can make a wedding photo shoot an unforgettable event.

Summer wedding by the water

Petrovskaya Spit is located almost in the center of St. Petersburg. This is such a “nano-resort” area: there is a beach where people sunbathe and swim, a yacht club, and along the coastline there are enough restaurants that are focused on banquets and on-site registration. If you don’t want to leave the city, but dream of an outdoor wedding by the water, this is a great option. You can do a small photo session against the backdrop of the bay and yachts, a welcome area and registration on the open terrace and a banquet under the roof.

As a rule, we film a wedding walk in the Kurortny district when the off-site registration and celebration, and even the gathering of the children, are also taking place there. Right during the banquet, you can go out to get some fresh air, run out onto the bay for 15-20 minutes and take some staged shots. There are many restaurants along the shore with views and access to the water. This way, guests are not confined inside the hall, and the guys can organize part of the festive program on the shore or terrace.

Wedding in November

November may not rank as the most popular month for a wedding, but any time of year has opportunities for a good celebration, and any time of year has its benefits. It is only important to use them correctly! So, for example, the undoubted advantage of a November wedding is the absence of queues and crowds at the registry office - when else, if not at this time, can young people feel their uniqueness, their exclusivity? Also, a big advantage of a wedding in November can be reduced prices in wedding salons and wedding agencies. There are not many weddings in November, and accordingly, wedding agencies are not overloaded with clients. A young couple can take advantage of this by ordering an unusual wedding with a themed scenario, with a bright plot, creative outfits... Themed weddings are interesting in themselves, but they will be especially useful at a time when it is difficult to come up with a beautiful walk after the registry office, when it is cloudy outside and Cold. At this time, young people often want to go to a restaurant immediately after the wedding, but somewhere do they need to take photographs for the wedding album? A themed celebration will be the very thing that is interesting to young people, unforgettable for guests and very useful in terms of a photo shoot. However, if your wedding is traditional, there should still be interesting photos in the album, right? Go for a walk where you can take photos in any weather! These are shopping centers, Museums, Greenhouses... These places are familiar to everyone and have long earned the reputation of “wedding” places, since young couples often choose them for a photo shoot. And here lies another advantage of a November wedding - there are very few newlyweds this month, which means there is less chance that the young couple will meet another wedding procession. What else is good about a November wedding? In November, you can plan a wedding for those who have decided to get married, because almost the entire month, weddings are allowed. If you decide that on your wedding day you absolutely need to stop by the church and seal your union with this wonderful ceremony, prepare for the wedding in advance. Remember that the bride's head should be covered with a veil, shawl or scarf, the outfit should not be too open or provocative, and it is best to stick to classic wedding colors - the bride in white, the groom in dark. However, it is in November that you can successfully combine a wedding and an unusual, open wedding dress. How to do this, you ask? It's simple: the November weather is unlikely to allow the bride to do without outerwear, and a fur cape, stole or warm bolero can become the very accessory that will turn any open outfit into one quite modest and acceptable for a wedding. The bride can go to the temple, throwing her “outer clothes” over her shoulders, and at the wedding banquet she can demonstrate her dress in all its glory. And note that such transformations work best during the cold season, when the newlywed has such a wonderful opportunity to change her wedding look. Well, having a wedding in November isn't such a bad idea, don't you agree? And may this holiday be warmed by the warm feelings of newlyweds in love at any time of the year!

Vitebsky railway station

Any wedding photographer knows that if it’s cold or raining, one of the best decisions is to go to Vitebsky Station. This is one of the five operating railway stations in the Northern capital, but at the same time the oldest and most beautiful not only here, but also in Russia. It is located almost in the center, which is very convenient when building a wedding route, and it is good to shoot on the platform at any time of the year or day. You will have to pay for this, but no more than in a photo studio, while the Art Nouveau style station is suitable even for a non-stylized photo shoot.

Stroganov Palace

The palace is located in the city center. Entrance from Nevsky Prospekt.

  • Almost no people.
  • Price 5000 rub. for photography + 300 rub. per person

Summer garden

Another popular and iconic place is the Summer Garden. It differs from other parks in the city - its layout allows you to play with geometry and perspective. The garden is wonderful for shooting in sunny and cloudy weather - in the sun it transforms, it’s great to work with light here.

Garden bosquets, labyrinths, fountains, sculptures, almost endless alleys, the Moika embankment - all this is an excellent platform for shooting both photos and videos. Letny is located in the heart of St. Petersburg, so from here you can even walk to another point on the wedding route.
