To decorate your wedding brightly and beautifully, you don’t have to spend a lot of money on expensive decor. A great option is to use paper pompoms. They look very impressive and are suitable for any holiday. Making a paper pompom with your own hands is very easy. There are many ways to decorate a celebration with such decor, and that’s what we’ll talk about.
How to make a paper pompom with your own hands
For this we need special paper, threads or thin wire, ribbon or threads for hanging, and scissors. If you are going to mount finished products on walls or horizontal surfaces, you will also need double-sided tape. You can use the following types of paper:
- corrugated;
- cigarette;
- crepe;
- silence;
- regular table napkins.
The first three options are best. So, you need to fold a sheet of paper like an accordion and carefully fasten it in the middle with threads or wire. Please note that it is not advisable to overtighten the accordion; the strip should remain straight. You can immediately attach a ribbon or thread to which you will attach the ball. Pom-poms made of corrugated paper (or any other) will have a diameter equal to the width of the sheet, this should be taken into account during manufacture. The edges can be trimmed figuratively: pointed or rounded. This will make the ball more beautiful and dense.
To begin with, you can make such blanks, and then begin to unfold them. Even children can cope with this task, but it requires some time and accuracy. You can also buy paper pompoms ready-made, that is, folded and fastened. All that remains is to open and hang such products.
Do-it-yourself fabric pompoms for a wedding
Fabric pompoms are very durable. They can be used more than once, decorating the interior if necessary, even after the wedding.

Materials for fabric pompoms:
- directly fabric (synthetic);
- scissors;
- needle and thread;
- ribbon or rope to hang the finished ball.
Manufacturing instructions:
Making this pompom ball is very easy. Lay the fabric out on the table and cut it into strips of equal width. The wider the strip, the larger the diameter of the finished pompom. We take the strip and tightly assemble it with an “accordion” onto a thread. We roll the stitched tape in a spiral so that we get half a ball. Fix the half of the ball with thread or glue. Sew a thread into the middle. Similarly, if necessary, we make the second half of the ball, fasten them with threads and hang them in the place you need.
Instructions for unrolling a paper pompom
Next, both edges of the accordion need to be straightened like a fan. Having placed it on the table, you need to separate the top layer of paper and lift it up, bringing it to the attachment point. This should be done on both ends. You need to do the same with the second side, so that an equal number of layers are bent upward on both sides. You need to separate the layers of paper very carefully so that fewer tears are formed. But even if they are obtained, this is not critical, because they will not be noticeable in the general mass. Just fluff the resulting pompom well, shake it, and it’s ready. To be more confident, you can watch the training video.
Crepe paper pompoms come in a wide range of colors, allowing you to choose the right shade for your wedding. They are easy to make in a wide range of diameters. Of course, instead of special paper, you can use table napkins, but they do not hold their shape well and quickly deteriorate when water gets on them. To save time, you can order ready-made pom poms so you can simply unfold them before decorating your space.
You should select the colors of the pompoms for the wedding in advance. The combination of paper balls of different diameters, colors or shades, which dominate the overall design, looks very impressive.
How to make a paper pompom in the shape of a hemisphere: detailed instructions
If you wish, you can make an unusual pom-pom that can be used to decorate any surface. For better stability, the paper product is created not round, but in the shape of a hemisphere.
For work, you can choose paper napkins, but we will opt for paper muffin tins. The latter have become the object of close attention of craftswomen due to their corrugated edges, which gives the decorative element additional volume. The work plan is as follows:
- Fold the cake pan in multiple layers to create an acute angle of approximately 45 degrees. Do the same with all forms. This is how we will make petals for a decorative pompom flower.
- Now collect all the petals together: alternately place the edge of one petal on the edge of the other, making sure that the sharp corners of the petals converge at one point, and that they themselves do not completely overlap each other.
- Using a hairpin or single thread with a needle, fasten the petals.
- To make the fluffy hemisphere very voluminous, fill the finished circle with several more rows of petals. Remember that all elements must be strung on a thread (hairpin).
Room walls
As already mentioned, using double-sided tape, pompoms can be easily attached to vertical and horizontal surfaces. They look elegant and beautiful on the walls. Thus, you can decorate any room with a minimum of effort.
Balloons will be a wonderful backdrop for a photo shoot; they can be used to post a drawing, wedding date, initials of the newlyweds, and so on. It is worth saying that such decor goes well with floral design or can even completely replace it. Properly made pompoms are very similar to lush flowers such as peonies, chrysanthemums or roses.

Paper pom-poms for weddings and holidays. Master class
Source. original source
Airy, fluffy paper pompoms are a budget-friendly way to decorate a wedding. They are good because they are made quite simply and quickly, and they can easily decorate a large area. Another advantage of such decorations is that they can be used to create a certain color scheme in the decor. In the article you will find examples of using pompoms and a master class on making them from crepe or tissue paper.
Paper pompoms are universal - they can be used to decorate napkins, bonbonnieres, a restaurant hall, a bride's room, a wedding arch. They will give any element an elegant and festive look.
One of the most common and most effective ways to decorate with paper pom poms is to hang them from the ceiling at different heights. They will create a festive atmosphere and add a certain color accent to the interior.
Pom poms can be used to make garlands.
You can attach them to the wall and make a pattern out of them. You can create a monogram from them with the initials of the newlyweds.
Large pompoms can simply be placed on a sofa, piano or on the floor.
Small pompoms can be used to decorate napkins.
An example of decorating a wedding ceremony with paper pompoms.
If the wedding is celebrated outdoors, you can decorate tree branches with pom-poms. They can also be made into a bright accessory for a photo shoot.
Paper pom poms can be used as artificial flowers and to decorate a graceful tree branch.
You can decorate your wedding car with them. This option is only suitable for spring and summer weddings. Rain and snow will quickly cause fragile pom-poms to lose their shape.
The master class will tell you how to make paper pompoms yourself.
You will need:
- Crepe or tissue paper or thin wrapping paper
- Scissors
- Thin wire or thread
Step-by-step instruction:
1. Cut the paper into A4 sheets (approximately 20*30 cm). For each pompom you will need 8 sheets of paper. You can choose a larger or smaller sheet format. The width of the sheet will correspond to the diameter of the pompom.
Fold like an accordion with a fold width of about 1.5 cm.
2. Bend the workpiece in the middle, tie it tightly with wire or thread at the bend (i.e. in the middle). If you plan to hang a pompom, make a loop of wire or thread.
Trim the edges of the workpiece on both sides. The picture shows two options - you can cut it in a semicircle or triangle. The pompom will either have rounded edges or sharp edges.
3. Spread the paper and “fluff” it.
4. You will have such a cute pom pom.
Pompoms in the wedding hall
Since making paper pom-poms does not take much time, they can easily decorate the entire hall and other rooms actively participating in the holiday: corridor, staircase, arches, door and window openings. In the main hall, it is enough to place fluffy balls on window sills, near tables, and attach them to curtains or draperies. The main thing is that the decor does not disturb guests and does not get underfoot on the floor.
Ideas for decorating a holiday with paper pompoms
To be honest, holiday decorators (or customers, I don’t know who exactly) greatly underestimate paper decorations made from the thinnest “silence” paper - multi-colored pompoms.
Why? Everyone probably thinks they need to spend a few nights making them themselves :-). On my website you can also find a detailed master class with a video, but I’ll say right away that it is only suitable for patient needlewomen. Is it worth spending time on folding and money on raw materials?
Let's figure it out
If you order paper pom-poms in 8 sizes in the store (prices are current in the fall of 2014), it will be like this:
- 15 cm (18 rub.)
- 20 cm (28 rub.)
- 25 cm (38 rub.)
- 30 cm (48 rub.)
- 35 cm (58 rub.)
- 40 cm (68 rub.)
- 45 cm (78 rub.)
- 50 cm (88 rub.)
When assembled, such a paper ball takes up very little space. All you have to do is unpack, fluff each layer and hang it from the ceiling to give any room a very festive look.
ATTENTION! If you turn to decorators, be prepared that for each pompom you will be quoted a much higher price (including fluffing and installation). Preparing pom-poms requires a significant amount of time, which is what decorators charge money for. It takes about 15 minutes to fluff one large pompom.
Let's look at the examples that I managed to find:
Paper pompoms for wedding decoration
Of course, white balls look most impressive. Very airy, gentle, solemn. They can be fixed only above the table of the newlyweds at different heights, and can be evenly distributed throughout the wedding hall.
Pompoms of two colors combine beautifully. For example, white and pale green, white and light pink. If all this has something in common with floral arrangements, napkins or guest cards, it will be even more elegant.
Decorations for baby shower or christening
This is a good alternative to balloons, which sometimes burst and scare kids. You can attach light pom-poms above the baby's crib for the first photo shoot, or attach a whole bouquet of 5-7 pieces to a chandelier.
Child's birthday
Well, there’s no need to stop your imagination here! We take the brightest colors; there is never “too bright” for such a holiday. There are, of course, pink pom-poms “for princesses” and dark “purple clouds” for a pirate party in a storm, but it’s quite possible to have just colorful fun.
Country party
Using paper pompoms is a very good solution for a holiday in a country area. You can hang it on the veranda or trees (such balls are not afraid of sharp branches). Very festive!
Making a big gift
Personally, I liked the idea. It is difficult to tie a large bow on a huge box with a gift, but even a preschooler can attach such a pompom.

There are examples of decorating festive arches and pieces of furniture with paper pompoms.

Wedding table decoration
Small pom-poms can be used to decorate the tables of guests and newlyweds. It will look bright and unusual. The products perfectly complement flowers, but their presence in the floral composition must be foreseen in advance. Balloons can also completely replace flowers on tables. These can be either individual products designating seats, or whole bunches located on tables or even hanging from them.
For an outdoor wedding
Paper balloons are perfect for outdoor wedding decorations. They can easily be used to decorate any objects, string long but almost weightless garlands, hang them on trees and bushes, mark different areas, use them instead of decorative ropes, create signs, and so on. Pom-poms can be supplemented with paper lanterns, which will come in very handy when it gets dark outside.
